Since I did not order South Africa's currency at my bank ahead of time, I decided to purchase from Ice Currency Exchange. The woman who helped us at Ice Currency Exchange was polite and helpful. We ended up using some of the South African Rand we purchased from the Exchange as soon as we arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although it would be best to not use Ice Currency Exchange for exchanging currency, it is still convenient to have this place at Tom Bradley Terminal LAX. When flying to South Korea and I exchanged US dollar for Korean won. The difference in transfer rate was astonishing. When I showed them the exchange rate on Google, they informed me that Google only shows what the exchange rate is for wiring. How does $300usd turn into 300,000 korean won when it suppose to be 395,000. This is a difference of $78USD this doesn't include the 12.95 that they add on for commission. My wife exchanged $750 USD for Mexican pesos on 2/12/22, when the spot exchange rate was 4.9 cents per peso. ICE charged her 6.4 cents per peso, a **30% markup**, PLUS a $10 transaction fee. I didn't check her receipt until we got back from the trip. They ripped her off for close to $175 USD. I'd accept a 5-10% premium, but 30% is beyond absurd. Just use your ATM card overseas. I had exchanged currency with them before and had no issues, which is why I'm leaving 2 stars instead of one. This last time, they ripped me off and gave me the opposite exchange rate - I was exchanging Euros for USD and they gave me the backwards rate, which is way worse and caused me to lose a significant amount of money. My brain was not at full capacity after a long trip, so unfortunately I didn't catch the mistake until getting home. When I returned to exchange my left over euros for dollars they purchased my Euros at a rate of 9 0.91.
