The Gauchos always put on an excellent show for next to no $$. No beer but a basic snack bar will keep you in hot dogs, peanuts and crackerjacks for the day. Check it out if you've never been :-) Its a great way to spend a Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We were seated in the furthest back row, directly near the projection window, which was open during the movie. I'm not sure if that's standard, but throughout the film there was a constant noise coming from inside the projection room. It sounded like someone had a sports game or something similar playing on a speaker. Because we were sitting so close to the projection room, we could hear it throughout the movie and it was extremely distracting. It definitely took away from the experience, especially when you're paying to enjoy a movie in a theater where you expect the auditorium to be quiet aside from the film itself. I'm hoping this can be looked into so it doesn't happen during future showings.

I will however say, back in 2006 when I was working here, the chairs are THE SAME ((fabric and all)) and now, they are covered with filth such as soda, food... and who knows what else. I threw my clothing away after my final try with the theater unfortunately. I was hoping with what money they get, they would keep the theater clean. That was my job, I cleaned and made sure there was no trash, spills or anything that was disgusting. I wish I could write good things, like how much the DDR games brought in EVERYDAY. I remember having to empty it at least 3 times during my 7 hour shift. But they got tired of people going in to just play the games, so they got rid of them. How does that make sense?? But no, I will drive to Oxnard despite it being a long drive and costing extra money. :/ I know they could do better but sadly, they aren't and it seems like they won't change it. I wonder how long it will last in this crazy world.

Ordering through the website wasn't possible so I called to order. Devon was extremely helpful and knew to ask me what temperature it was here in Georgia. I told her it was usually in the mid 90's. She recommended shipping 2nd day or waiting until cooler temperatures in order to keep the phytoplankton alive. They can't tolerate too much heat since the ocean water is typically cool even in full sun. She also gave me helpful advice for caring for the phytoplankton after the experiment and how I could train the experiment to bioluminesce during the day time. Sunnyside Sea Farms could do with an online ordering process, but had I not called, I wouldn't have learned so much about the Fusiform Pyrocystis dinoflagellates from Devon. In any case, my daughter's kindergarten class loved seeing the phytoplankton glow and learning about the luciferase and luciferin chemical reactions within the cell bodies. Also, the phytoplankton were large enough for them to see with a magnifying glass instead of needing a microscope. It was a big hit. Later the children got to experiment with glow sticks and discuss the diphenyl oxolate reactions to hydrogen peroxide. They also hypothesized as to why organisms would evolve this bioluminescent capability.

My first time to the University of California, Santa Barbara was for the 3rd Summit on Diversity in…read morethe Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions in July 2018. I arrived the night before the start of the diversity summit. The campus was well marked on the streets, though I did get lost trying to find my lodging accommodations. Slowing down as I drove my car, I eventually spotted a building matching the description I had. The workers were friendly and clearly directed me to where parking was for those of us attending the summit. I had signed up for the conference of my own initiative following attending a conference for the corresponding professions in March 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Finding parking that first night was my first sigh of relief I had made it. Then, walking my small suitcase towards the lodging building, I noticed a tunnel with lights running parallel to the tunnel entrances/exits up the sides and across the top of the tunnel. Pausing to take a look, someone on a bicycle rode through the tunnel and the lights blinked as they passed each strand. So cool. My lodging was comfortable, I was happy I had chosen to pay for everything myself in addition to choosing the summit myself. It helped build my confidence that I could call the shots in my own career. Summit sessions were held across the following two days in multiple on-campus buildings. Talent brought in spanned academia, national laboratory researchers, and people in industry. A few talk highlights included a presentation by a man from a company that had decided to pull his slides at the last minute for proprietary (intellectual property) reasons - he had to improv his entire talk. Another man, from my university (University of California, Berkeley) and a different department (Materials Science and Engineering) commented on how he hoped some day a Nobel Prize (corresponding disciplines: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry) would be awarded to someone who cared enough about diversity to attend this diversity summit in advance of being awarded the prize. I enjoyed the on-campus meals (catered) we shared together as well. The weather was beautiful and we could watch an on-campus lagoon for wildlife. A birdwatching guide and binoculars had been provided in my room. All around, I had a lovely time.

It is up to date with a very nice up to date scoreboard. Although holding near 20,000 people everyone seemed comfortable. Since I was one of the overflow crowd I had a chance to notice the grass was neat, no empty grass less areas of dirt. With a simple PA system we were able to hear all the speakers as well as the a cappella singers clearly. To the right as you enter is a media area which is needed as the Gauchos are a serious contender in University Soccer. Before this service I never considered attending a Gaucho soccer game. Now I'm excited to see my first one.
