First time here. Was worried about the quality of an All-U-Can-Eat place. Good price, not so great sushi. The shrimp tempura was actually breaded shrimp and it was overcooked. The cooked rolls were loosely rolled with no consideration for presentation. I sat at the sushi bar and they were slinging the rolls on the plate, over filing the plates at times. A waitress topped the sushi with baked fake crab salad, then served. Scallops were not real, very disappointed. Guess I'm use to a more delicate presentation, where the sushi masters take pride in their craft. These guys could sling hamburgers and fit right in. I won't be back. I went to this establishment with 37 people and i guarantee 62.3% of the people got explosive diarrhea. The only good part were the baby starfish in the fish tank. Never have I found a place where I can indulge my sushi cravings like I can here. The all you can eat special is spectacular! My favorites are the camel, Sarasota, and Elinas roll. Just had sushi here. Don't get fooled by the previous reviews or the "all you can eat" deal. Yes it's true that you can eat all you want but you'll stop after the first two rolls. I was visiting Sarasota and made the assumption that near the water means OK sushi. Not sure about the other reviews but Ichiban did not live up to its' Japanese to English translation: #1. I started with Edamame. Decent preparation and it came out at the right temperature. I ordered a straight forward 12 piece sashimi dinner. Had there been a radioactive leak in the area? The pieces were huge. Definitely crossed over into the 'quantity not quality' sphere. More disconcerting was the 'wateriness' of the fish. The 'previously frozen' bell started ringing. The pieces were big and thick. Not appetizing. All in all, a tough night. I should have gone to the Mexican restaurant next door. read more

We recently moved up to Sarasota, and tried Ichiban for the first time last night. It is what it is: an all-you-can-eat sushi joint. The fish was fresh & tasty, but things are obviously prepared with an eye towards speed & not quality -- the rolls were falling apart (and quite small, although I guess that goes with the AYCE territory) and the fish-to-rice proportion on the nigiri was way off (if we didn't want rice, we would order sashimi). The service was fast & friendly, but the atmosphere of the restaurant overall isn't super-appealing. As a previous reviewer mentioned, it does smell heavily of fish and everything just seems a bit rundown. It's certainly a good value, though, and if you're the type who eats a LOT of sushi at one time, you really can't beat it for the price. read more

Literally the worst sushi experience I've had in a long time. Poor quality, slow service, terrible food. We ordered simple orders....chicken teriyaki, spicy tuna rolls, miso, and salad with ginger. We also had a specialty roll. It is very hard to mess up every dish, but they succeeded admirably at serving us possibly the worst dinner we have had in ages. Miso soup was tasteless and had a weird film on it. Ginger salad which is just iceberg and ginger sauce was terrible. We didn't even eat half and started asking ourselves, "how do you screw up salad?". The. Came the rolls and chicken teriyaki bowls. The rolls were poorly constructed and frankly not that good. The teriyaki bowl was rubbery and had a weird taste to it. Overall, one of the worst restaurants I've been to in years. I can confidently say We won't be back. read more

My new job is about 3 minutes from Ichiban and when I saw that they offer all-you-can-eat sushi for under $20 (if you pay cash. It's $23 with credit cards) I couldn't wait to check it out. Gabriel picked me up from work yesterday and we headed straight over. We were seated right away and given paper check lists on which to make our choices. One menu included teriyaki and tempura options and the other was all sushi, maki rolls and hand rolls. There were 5 specials also included on the list and the waiter also informed us that we could also add salad and or soup. Wow. I was already impressed. The lists were very extensive. We are used to AYCE sushi in NYC that has only the most simple and basic choices and were really excited to see how far our $20 was going to go here. We both started with a salad. The dressing was awesome, but the iceberg (blah, boring) lettuce was not fresh- brown pieces everywhere. We were both happy enough with the dressing that we ate it anyway, and I would quickly come to see that this first course was the ONLY negative thing about the whole meal. Next, the waiter brought out our tempura and teriyaki choices. The tempura was pretty good- though not super light and flaky like it should be...but it was hot and fresh and the flavor of the sauce was perfect. The teriyaki beef was surprisingly good- tender meat with tons of sweet and tangy flavor. It's cool that when you order from that hot cooked food list, you order by the bite sized piece, so it's perfect for just having little taste samples of whatever sounds good without committing to huge portions. Next we got our first plate of sushi. (I actually completely and totally forgot to photograph round 2 of our teriyaki, tempura and sushi choices..OOPS!) We had about 10 total rolls and 5 pieces each of very tasty fish. Some of the standouts were the scallop roll, the Sarasota roll (tempura shrimp topped with lobster and eel sauce, YUM. This was my favorite) and the alaska roll. The sushi here is very good. It is not the ultimate, top quality fish you find at some restaurants, but it IS definitely fresh and very very good. If you want to spend triple the amount for fresher fish, than by all means go for it. I'd personally MUCH rather spend $20 for ridiculous quantities of very good quality fish here. When we were full-as-can be, we got our check and realized that we didn't bring enough cash. My bad. So, we got one of the $19.95 deals but had to pay $22.95 for the one we used a credit card. Including tax & tip, we spent around $50 for this awesome meal, and calculated that we'd most likely eaten WELL over $100 worth. We tried this because of the Yelp reviews. While the wait staff were nice and the service was good, none of the food was good. The salad was swimming in an overly sweet dressing. The tuna tataki was overdone and poor quality fish. The tempura was heavy. And the two sushi rolls were bland and poorly done. We usually give places a second chance, but not this one. I can see why families might like it because the food was bland and the decor homey, but this is not a place for people who know anything about sushi read more

I went in with some pretty strict food restrictions and called Ichiban beforehand to make sure they were able to accommodate me and my party. They welcomed us and happily were able to make all the substitutions we needed. The lady on the phone (Janet) was extremely nice and she even told us to ask for her when we got to the restaurant so that we would to have to explain the situation to everyone else. Ichiban is a true gem in Sarasota so I must mention their Sarasota roll. It is fresh, light and flavorful with lovely colors. The rice is well-prepared and the seaweed is tender, but crisp. The fresh slice of avocado on top is creamy and adds a classic touch to a very unique tasting roll. You Must attend for early bird special at lunch time or closer to 4:30PM. 5 rolls at a super deal! The miso soup is satisfying and the ginger salad is sweet, tangy and light. This is a casual restaurant, but they produce a high end product at a reasonable price. I love this restaurant and I will be back many, many more times. Also, I'm quite sure Ichiban delivers now, so I will be looking into that for sure-who doesn't love sushi for their date nights?! read more

I have been a fan of this restaurant so yesterday I suggested it for lunch with my friends. A huge disappointed ensued, due mostly to the subpar service. When placing my order with the waitress, she completely ignored what I asked for and subsequently brought out the wrong meal. The owner came over and removed my dish with dismay and sloppily re-plated a portion of my sashimi. What was presented to me was a throw away dish that showed they really don't care about customer service. Even after a shaky start, I'm a huge fan and i wish I lived closer. Short Story: well-prepared sushi, great price, generous proportions. I was particularly impressed with the tiny balls of rice in the nigiri. Overly Long Story: My family and I were attracted as first timers by the $20 all-you-can-eat deal. My understanding is the week we went may have been the first time they were offering the special, in addition to having recently expanded. We had no reservation so we waited about 45 min to be seated. The waited was a bit of a spaceshot and after taking our orders, we didn't see him for about an hour. No appetizers, no soup, nothing. We rationalized for a long as we could about the busyness of the restaurant, the reason for the wait, etc etc, but ultimately we decided to leave, and explained to the hostess on the way out. There was a diabetic amongst us too, so time was an issue. While we dithered outside about possible alternatives, the manager came out and apologized, asked us to come back in, and assured us that everything was ready to be served. After a bit of hemming and hawing, (and a huge push from me since I'm addicted to sushi and was salivating with anticipation) we went back inside and were served immediately. I've never eaten so much sushi in my life and it was hands down delicious and fresh. The original waiter bucked up and made more of an effort too. I give a lot of credit to the management and the hostess for the way they handled things in the end. I would definitely go back. read more

I had always heard how great this restaurant was and had just never made it there so I was really excited when I finally did. Sadly it did not live up to my expectations. If you are looking for unlimited sashimi for $20.00 then this is the place, otherwise very mediocre. I started with the appetizer of tempura shrimp. I do no think it was tempura, It was breaded, maybe with panko but seemed to be similar to sea pak brand you can buy at the grocery store. The rolls were very sloppy and fell apart. My spider roll barely had any crab in it. I would consider going again if I was going to eat exclusively sashimi. read more

Great prices and great food. I got the tempura and for once I did not get sick afterwards, it was really good. Miso was decent. I tried some sushi and it was really good. I found the sushi to be ok. Normally Mexican Rolls are a hot sushi item, and my food was warm at best. I felt that it was very expensive for the area that it was in and the atmosphere. The sushi at Yume in downtown Sarasota on Main Street is less expensive, tastes better, service is better and they have a lovely atmosphere. My husband agreed with all of my dislikes and we agree that we won't be back to Ichiban, its worth it to drive a little further to go to Yume. read more
