I have been seeing Dr. Wu for 6 months for sciatic nerve pain with good results. I especially like Dr. Wu's philosophy that we are partners in healing. My main symptom is pain with sitting, and with an out of state conference coming up we were motivated to get me well. After only 2 months with Dr. Wu and doing the prescribed home exercises, I was able to take a cross country flight (with one layover) pain free. I had essentially no pain at the conference, and only had pain on the 5 hour direct flight home. This was far better than I had expected. I got too confident after this, and played competitive basketball for a few hours and messed everything up again. I could hardly walk or sit for more than a few minutes the rest of the week. At my next appointment Dr. Wu adjusted me and I felt 50% better instantly and was able to facilitate a 2 hour meeting at work the next day. Very positive experience with Alan so far. I previously felt skeptical about chiropractors. However, he practices the Gonstead system, which is more precise and evidence-based. I did a lot of research and decided to give it a go. I've now seen him a handful of times, and will likely continue to see him for regular tune-ups. Alan uses a combination of analyses to diagnose and treat me. First, he does a physical examination. This includes checking for swelling, pain, and range of motion. Then, he analyzes X-rays, including measuring curvatures and imbalances. Additionally, he uses a device to check for heat differences along the spine. He also utilizes a breath of knowledge in both Eastern and Western medicine. Lastly, he makes an effort to back up his recommendations with science and evidence. This part's pretty important to me, as I've asked him at times, "Is there any scientific evidence of this?" (And there always is.) Ultimately, it's pretty neat to see him utilize all of these methods to treat me. I feel significantly better since starting to see him. I saw him frequently at first (1-2x/week) to address painful symptoms. After treatments, I experienced noticeable improvements. These include decreased lower back pain, and no more balance issues. It's actually been pretty darn fascinating to see these obvious changes in my own body. And, to realize a lot of it originates in the spine. My posture, range of motion, and even how my squatting (the exercise) feels--they've all changed. I'm pretty active (heavy weightlifting, dancing) and also not in my twenties anymore... Look I'm a science guy, as cynical as they come, and I came in deeply skeptical of chiropractry. I chose ICON because of the Gonstead system (more sciencey) and the reviews here. I pulled my back deadlifting a decade ago and never took care of it, and ended up with an extremely stiff back, unbalanced gait, occasional pain, and deteriorated disc. All I can say is this shit worked like magic. This is physical - in the sense that I literally could not bend over and reach my toes without feeling like my back would crack in two and now after a few visits I have almost all of my flexibility back. I feel like I can walk normally, feel balanced, stronger. I can't explain that away with placebo, that is impossible. This person is magic, I don't give a shit what the Google says about quackery or whatever. It works, period. That's all I can say. I don't know how it works, but it does. I am one of the many satisfied patients who visit Dr.Wu for back and spine issues. During one of my periodic visits, Dr. Wu heard me complaining about wrist pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome and offered to help me adjust it. In just 3 weeks, Dr. Wu has been able to accomplish more than what 2 previous chiropractors were not able to do in the past 4 years. He stopped my head shaking. It had started after having 2 car accidents in less than 1 year (I was rear-ended both times). Furthermore, I'm able to hear better. The volume on the TV had to be at least 26 before I could hear it. Now, it's down to 12. Also, I'm able to see the clock next to my bed without my glasses on, just like I did before the accidents. I admire Dr. Wu's expertise and caring. Like all chiropractors, he studies the x-rays to see where the spine is misaligned. Dr.Wu is a really good doctor. He knows how to fix the right spot. After I got second time car accident, my back pain was worse than day by day. I went to the physical therapy for so many times, but it didn't work for me. After I finished my treatment with Dr.Wu, my back pain is gone. No more painful. I'm updating my experience with this place for a month. My first visit was 2/19. I had knee pain, neck pain and hip pain. I took a pirates class for the first time and it really triggered all kind of pain. But, even before that, I already knew my legs are in different length because one foot always hurt when I walk long time. I have a very active pitbull and walk sometimes more than two hours with her. One day I just felt my one side foot is slightly stepping out side of my foot. And knee pain gradually developed. I made good review about his place and his attitude but couldn't tell if it really works. My knee pain: absolutely gone after first adjustment. And didn't come back. My neck pain: got a lot better than before. At least I dont have the feeling something hot explode. I've been keeping my neck straight as much I can. My hip pain: almost gone. I couldn't bend over to wear my shoes but now when I bend over , not much pain. It's still there but Dr. Wu said it will take longer than others. Well, almost gone. Ps. Dr. Wu is extremely meticulous with craft, and has made me into a believer of the Gonstead method. I've seen many chiropractors over the past 15 years and he is one of the best I've seen. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about his field but he also takes almost a mathematical approach to his treatment. He has his patients take x-rays, so he can analyze the angles and curves of the spine, using rulers and protractors. He refers to the x-rays at every session and uses a device to test the alignment of the spine before and after each adjustment session, so he can make very specific adjustments to just the source vertebraes that are causing the issues. (Most chiropractors I've seen in the past don't take or look at any x-rays and just make adjustments on the fly which didn't give me the immediate results I've been seeing with Dr. Wu.) In a few sessions, my neck (which has a reverse curve) hasn't been giving me as much problems, my back is more upright and aligned, and has even impacted my yoga practice, allowing me to get into inversions and postures I haven't been able to get into before due to the limitations I had with my neck and back. I've been battling a serious hip injury for over the last 6 years and chronic pain for over the last 3. I've received multiple hip and groin surgeries from highly-accredited orthopedic specialists located all over the Bay Area -- including the hip specialist @ Stanford Health. Yet, none of those surgeries helped the pain or my underlying issue. In addition, I've been tried physical therapy, acupuncture, and cryotherapy...but still no luck. I was planning on seeing another orthopedic specialist, anticipating having to receive another surgery (more serious surgery), but I was referred to Dr. Wu and decided give him a shot. During my first visit, he took a deep look at my x-rays and examined me throughly to find the correct adjustment. During the second visit, he adjusted my illium and I couldn't believe it -- I felt relief the next day. This was the first time I felt relief in several years. On my 4th visit, he adjusted my sacrum and I felt even better. Although I still have minor chronic pain, I feel 10x better than before and most importantly, I see light at the end of the tunnel. Let's get this out there first - I was not there as a patient seeing Dr. Wu. I am a recently graduated chiropractic student. I am currently going around shadowing various chiropractors to gain experience. I happened to hear about Dr. Wu because he volunteered to come to our school to teach adjusting techniques at our Gonstead Club. Dr. Wu graciously let me shadow him for a full day at his clinic. It might sound cheesy, but I have never been so impressed by another chiropractor. He really pays a lot of attention to each individual case. He will always recheck the patient's condition on that day, then compare to his previous findings to better address any changes in the patient's condition. He delivers 2, at most 3 specific adjustments, tailored to address the root cause of any complaints the patients may have. I mention this specifically because other chiropractors I have visited tend to give everyone the same set of adjustments for the sake of saving time. He will always analyze x-rays, and take the time to explain the things that he finds to all of his patients. In short, you can be assured that Dr. Wu will always be looking at you as an individual, and will not treat you as just another spine to crack. Dr. Wu is the man! My old roommate got me interested in the Gonstead method from videos and articles. Ever since, I've always been curious and so glad that I met Dr. Wu. I appreciate that he takes his time to really evaluate your situation and explains everything that's happening. Since I am interested in his practice I end up asking a lot of questions and always takes his time to answer how the spine is connected to the brain and nervous system. Dr. Alan Wu practices the Gonstead technique which is completely different than the other chiropractors I've been to. Instead of getting adjusted at the same points with electro stem each visit, you are adjusted at 3 points during each visit depending on where your "hot spots" are. Dr. Wu is the fourth chiropractor I have seen over a 20 year period and by far the most comprehensive with his assessment. I began seeing chiropractors 20 years ago for lower back pain. I went routinely for a year and eventually stopped because my body just wouldn't hold the adjustments. I have tried other chiropractors since with the same end result - not holding adjustments. Dr. Wu is the first Gonstead chiropractor I've seen and I was very pleased with how thorough his assessment was and his friendly demeanor. I felt at ease right away and trusted his expertise.
