I don't usually review supermarkets, but my 1st experience ordering groceries from here via Ubereats recently wasn't a good one unfortunately. I placed a small order for provisions (Yuca, plantain, sweet potatoes, organic pumpkin and Organic corn on the cob) to make my homemade caribbean style chicken soup. Sadly none of the organic items were available and needed to be replaced with non-organic items. The produce was fresh however, which is why I gave 2 stars. The major disappointment was the fact that I also ordered 5 cases of 24/ 0.5 liters of water and at least 5 bottles from each case had a weird chemical plastic like taste. The smell was quite rancid upon opening each bottle and the taste was even worse. I had to request a refund and throw them out. They also were NOT expired, so I'm baffled as to why they smelled and tasted so awful. Ended up having to place an order with Amazon Fresh to replace them. I normally order my groceries from Fresh, should've just done that from the jump! I probably won't be ordering from here again. If I do, I definitely won't be getting water!! read more

I shop at ideal food basket for the convenience not the quality or prices of the food, recently I purchased a whole Pineapple and some Brie cheese, they were both spoiled and rancid upon opening. Please check your Produce and Dairy products and forget about "profit", unfortunately I misplaced threw out my receipts but rest assured I will not do that again. I will stop spending my money at your store if this continues, convenient or not. Please get on top of this before someone gets sick. Constantly frustrated by my experience shopping in this market, the cashiers have been disrespectful and straight racist on more than one occasion. They also charge insane markups for basics like produce (a dollar a pound for bananas?) and health food items. Literally more than "whole paycheck" Whole Foods. Receipts posted. Save your dollars and your dignity. If you don't, you'd better check your expiration dates, because they will leave unsold, high-markup, perishables like meat on the shelf for many MONTHS after the expiration date. Places like this make it unnecessarily difficult to shop locally with poor customer service, poor pricing patterns, and poor quality items on the shelves. read more

On February 3rd, I went into the store for the first time to do some shopping. One of the items I picked up was the fat free Fig Newtons. When I got home, I stored it in the back of my cabinet. Last night when I was looking for some sweets and I saw the pack that I forgot all about. When I opened it, all I saw was two fig newtons! This is what I paid $4.39 for? I showed it to the store manager this morning, but he was very skeptical, after all, I did make the purchase two weeks ago. It was my bad I did not notice how light the package was, but the store stacked it on the shelf anyway which goes to show that shopping here is anything but "ideal." read more

There's a decent selection here & the store is kept clean, compared to some other supermarkets I've seen. I don't know why as you walk towards the fish market it's this foul smell, but none of the fish smells, I'm not sure if it's a cleaning solution or what it is. The gentleman who works the fish market, isn't that polite & I'm not sure either if he makes the cost more than what it should be, but because I have my doubts, I don't think I'll be buying fish anymore from here. The workers along the aisles have always been helpful, while some of the cashiers, barely crack a grin. I feel 50/50 with the cashiers..you just never know what you'll get, which in a customer see environment it should be consistent with what you'll get. read more

PBS aired a program on beef imported from Nicaragua - Thomas Farms is not organic, it is not raised on a local farm. You should seriously consider not selling Thomas Farms Beef. I will definitely never buy it again. read more

I typically don't bother with yelp reviews unless service is exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. While this place looks great and appealing due to its size and luster compared to other groceries in the neighborhood, I have found the customer service to be ENTIRELY despicable. There are some incredibly rude people at this place. Once, I opened my mouth to ask a question and was told to "speak English". This kind of attitude is disgusting and incompatible with a neighborhood that is primarily home to South Asian immigrants. Price markdowns are also incorrect. I have gone to the counter with items on sale, with cashiers telling me otherwise. Then "price checks" are done carelessly. Once, I walked back to the aisle after purchasing my item to see that I was in fact, correct. When confronting one of the employees who did the price check, for some reason he asked me if I purchased every other version of the item EXCEPT the one that was clearly on sale, as if I'm stupid and can't read. He then told me the item marked to be on sale, was not actually on sale but left the sticker on the shelf anyway. You don't do your job right anyway, so swallow your pride and open your mind. read more

Even though this place has been completely redone and very nicely I might add and they have some great new products and a huge variety, I initially gave it one star, due to the below: "During the renovation, there was no type of protection (or very little) with the work to keep food, bread, vegetables, fruit, etc from being exposed by all of the contaminants that were being spread all over the products. I picked up some loose spinach and other greens which were completely covered by various contaminants due to a lack of any type of protection during the work. Especially considering that this building had asbestos, I was amazed at the lackadaisical protocols. I found this totally unacceptable and appalling not to mention very unhealthy to both consumers and the workers in the store and no doubt against every single health code." BUT since that poorly planned renovation, Ideal is a very good supermarket with plenty of organic products, good fruits/veggies and a fish department which has great workers in that department. It (along with their other store over on Sutphin Blvd, are the best supermarket in the entire area and worth a visit, but the Jamaica area, though it has many supermarkets, most are crappy, so the bar is low, but then the bar is always low in the Jamaica area for everything. So Ideal got better after the renovations. BUT, their prices are high for the area, but they still have a big selection of goods. read more

This place looks great since their renovation. But there's always a bad smell in the back by the first isle not sure if it's because of the meat but it smells like something died. They have a nice selection of cheeses and the new deli area is well stocked with goods. The fruits and vegetables are ok not great looking but still fresh. The staff is sometimes helpful if you can't find something. The cashiers are ok. Prices are reasonable. They have a parking lot which is really good if the weather outside is bad. The only downside is when they were doing the renovations a lot of items got dusty. So if you grab a box of pasta it was dirty. read more

The place looks nice but unfotunately the food here is not fresh.The cheese section has rotting cheese and some of the displayed salads and sandwhiches are also spoiled. Not sure if its the stock people who are not rotating these products correctly or the management that doesnt seem to care,that is until someone gets sick and its too late.It was brought to the attention of a manager that a soft cheese product was purchased twice from there and although it had an expiration date stamped well into next year they were actually spoiled and molded when opened and perhaps they should either remove or replace them since the same products were still on the shelf . He just shook his head and said oh ok.I fear someone will get sick if they havent already,and suprised they are allowed to continue serving spoiled food/ cheese. read more

no more expired goods on shelf. produce seems consistently fresher. they seem to be having more sales of late. they keep adding organic gluten free dairy free options. still running out frequently of gluten free items- bread especially.finally whole organic chicken. now for some grass fed beef. hoping they will add dairy free ice cream.fish section finally opened with nice selection of very fresh whole and fillet fish. not many other seafood except shrimp and octopus( for some weird reason). they carried lobster without a tank and they kept dying. so they thankfully stopped selling dead lobster.wish they had fuller seafood selection clams mussels scallops and get a lobster tank. read more

Ideal food Basket is a cultural and diverse market to shop at. Good produce, meat products, as well as other wonderful products. There are Ideal Food Baskets in the other boroughs. Why not Staten Island?I only wish that there was an Ideal Food Basket in Staten Island, where I live. read more

This was a problem location for every supermarket that occupied it for years: terrible lighting, lousy choices, and staff that was rude as hell. It was known as 'Fine Fare' during this period, then underwent a total gut renovation: new lighting, refrigerated cases, great increase in food options. The comments made that refer to expired or spoiled food/produce are absolutely false: the store is kept impeccably clean, the produce section the most improved. Many more people work there now, and I would'nt call any of them rude. However, to be blunt, no one there - no one - could give a damn to speak English, although most can if you are forced to ask them a question. It would'nt hurt for some minimal effort to be made to try to get the staff to become more proficient in the language. They would see a noticeable increase in store traffic. read more

Never use this grocery store if you can avoid it. The staff is extremely rude (if they even acknowledge your presence, they will talk about you in Spanish in front of you), the produce is inedible (the best selections are usually well past the sell by date), and during renovations that took place this summer, absolutely no efforts were made to protect the foods from dust and chemicals being spread about. The produce was visibly contaminated and the boxes were caked with dust. I don't even know how this place can legally be open. One star is generous. read more

When they were renovating the store I was hoping it would be like Whole Foods or Trader's Joe's because we need a better quality supermarket in this neighborhood. Sadly it's only marginally better now than before the renovation. Their selection of meats and poultry is bad - I agree with the other reviewer - there's always an odor around the meat case. They should offer more organic food and higher quality top shelf selections. read more

I love this place, there are parking lot, very easy shopping. Sometimes cheaper , sometimes expensive. Good store.

Beautiful store with old, out dated, rotten food. That's why it's never busy. I purchase 2 carton of eggs on sale with a date stamped 4 months to go and both were full of mold. I purchased a pack of their loose cheese and it was full of mold too. And for god's sake stay away from that rotisserie chicken. I have to walk down to C-Town for my groceries now. Most employees can't speak English and the manager is incredibly rude and unprofessional. They have good prices on eggs though.
