Worst home health care agency I've ever dealt with -- wish I could give zero or negative stars. I…read moreonly give 1 or 2 stars in extreme cases, and this certainly warrants that. Miscommunication or more like NO COMMUNICATION by care coordinators, Liz & Kim and aides that just wouldn't show up -- or ones that just came unannounced. And since I didn't know anyone was scheduled to come twice I was out running errands and my loved one had no way of answering the door. One such aide, Monique, arrived and made such a screaming, profanity yelling tantrum at the guard booth that I had neighbors calling asking if everything was ok. Thank God I live in a gated community but with this young woman's temper I wouldn't want her in my home. She showed up to work the next day only to leave my loved one unattended to make a personal phone call outside while I was out walking my dog. I heard her carrying on from down the block arguing on the phone with someone about her "baby daddy in jail" and she must've been in jail recently too because she was talking about being in a small cell herself. She was unprepared to do any work that day, her only intention was to make and receive personal calls and texts. I noticed a few days later that she unplugged a plug-in next to the recliner she was sitting in to charge her phone and it spilled over getting scented oil all over the wall, carpet and recliner staining everything. At least it smells good?? Another aide this agency sent, Margaret, was 70 years old and the poor woman had so many medical issues she herself could have used an aide. She didn't eat before coming for her 9 hour shift nor did she bring food with her so we were offering her all sorts of food and I was actually serving her like a queen while I ran around like a servant in my own home. There was no way she would have been able to perform the strenuous physical tasks required of her and she should not have been sent here, it was made clear to the coordinators the type of help that was needed and the intake nurse personally met and assessed my loved one. This "aide" was surprised to learn that I would not be pitching in going forward and would not be helping her -- I told her this was not a tag team and the point of a home health aide was to give me a break. Yet another aide, "B" was so frail and also had a major medical diagnosis which would have prevented her from performing critical tasks required of her. At least this aide had her own car because the other two did not and they relied on a friend/relative/public transportation. From our house to the nearest bus stop it is a mile -- there's no way someone would walk that on a daily basis in rain, sleet or snow, and it is our experience that any time an aide doesn't have their own transportation they are very unreliable. It was also made very clear to Nannies with Grannies coordinators Liz and Kim that we have 2 small dogs and a cat -- that behaves like Sasquatch and hides with visitors but a cat nonetheless -- and any aide entering our home would need to know that and be ok with pets. All of these aides had an issue with pets making it very difficult to form a relationship long term. I have no idea how such an agency who deals with disabled or elderly clients could be in existence with such poorly screened aides, such poorly matched aides for the job, aides showing up to a job without proper knowledge and training of the equipment in the home, with clueless coordinators who forget to make a simple phone call, and without the 2 main requests taken into consideration: Pets (who are sweet and don't bother anyone, but we do understand not everyone likes pets and some people are just plain allergic!) and basic knowledge of the equipment used in the home So in a month and a half period of time 3 aides came for 3 days of service. UNACCEPTABLE! GET A CLUE NANNIES FOR GRANNIES! Oh wait I forgot, after almost 3 weeks of no service the guard at the gatehouse calls Christmas Eve while we're rushing to get dressed and ready to catch a ferry to Connecticut to say an aide is here. Um what?!?! Epic fail Nannies Even the intake nurse, Mary, changed the time of her intake appointment and insisted my loved one screwed up the time but what she didn't realize is that she was on speakerphone with myself AND the aide also in the room. She made the mistake but we didn't press the issue because they were a new agency and we didn't want to nit pick at the time. Well, now it is beyond nit picking at this point. I have no idea how so much can go so wrong but it's really unacceptable.

An update! The Aide that left me/her company in the lurch (job abandonment) showed up to my house…read morethe following day. I told her I already ended the contract w/the company. She said her boyfriend's car got impounded, so she decided to stay home (but never called the agency directly). I sent her packing and called the agency to ask the same on-call person (who said I would have no help all weekend) why she would send this irresponsible person to my house unannounced AND after I ended the contract. She said the Aide apologized last night via voicemail, so she let her come to my house. I asked why she didn't call to inform me this morning. She said she was busy and forgot! So Monday 9am, I talked to the caseworker (Mrs. H) and mngr (Christine?). They offered a bunch of apologies. They said the 'emergency/on-call person is supposed to call for additional assistance if they can't find an aide (a sorry excuse, if the emergency person does not know basic procedure). I made it clear that I have extensive experience in healthcare management, and I know how many mistakes were made in the handling of my case--their service is abysmal. I made it clear that I would pursue my complaint with the MLTC that same day, and there was no chance to continue my Mother's contract of service. I severed ties immediately. A WEEK LATER ON THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY (12/9) while I was working with an Aide from the new agency, there was a ring at my bell. It was my regular Aide who just returned from vacation. NO ONE AT 'HOME SWEET HOME/CATHIE'S CAR/NYHC' told her what happened, or that the contract was terminated!! They let her take TWO buses to my home for ME to tell her that the agency failed us both again and stood us up with no coverage while she was out. Once she left, I contacted the on-call person (a different woman from last week, more knowledgeable) and told her EVERYTHING that had taken place up until today. She was astounded. She said there was no information left on the case record showing they had lost my account. I told her I called the MLTC on Monday after I spoke to her manager (Christine), and the MLTC had the Medicaid paperwork completed and the new agency/Aide assigned by the Wed or Thurs. This poor communication had to be her manager's fault. I left word that Home Sweet Home is clearly negligent in their training, paperwork AND procedure and have no respect for the few good Aides they may have in their employ. Of course, I never heard back from the manager. As stated--I have experience in healthcare. I can honestly tell you, this is 'keystone cops' type of behavior. I have never seen so many errors in handling a simple case. No one likes to be a victim of someone's job abandonment, but what blows my mind is the obvious poor screening and hiring practices, as well as poor training and communication clearly evident in my case. MULTIPLE, EGREGIOUS errors. I never saw such terrible mismanagement of a routine case in my 12 years in healthcare. If they are this clueless on a day-to-day, what happens in serious situations? Inexcusable!

Family First is an unbelievable gem in the home health space. I needed some help while on crutches…read more (My laundry mountain was out of control. Errands were shot without the ability to drive. The floors, oh my gawd, the floors needed some love.) The person Jennifer, the owner, sent over delivered above and beyond anything I imagined. It actually pained me to say farewell to Louise. I found them by searching for "elder care" "help" in the Suffolk County, Long Island area. My late night call was returned promptly, with a (free) assessment meeting scheduled that very week. Having had experience with terrible home health aides I honestly didn't think I'd get much out of this service. But when you need help options seem limited. So here's the thing. Louise showed up the first day and didn't stop moving until she left three hours later. I had booked the minimum weekly time (3hrs 2x/week) for budget reasons. I figured we'd start to chip away at the massive to-do list. Nope. We finished my list in short order and tackled a host of other challenges. Everything and anything you'd like to do with an extra set of hands. Home Health Companions are typically something you'd book for older folks. They are a wonderful resource to keep an eye out on the elderly or infirm. (Note: They do not do heavy lifting like showering someone. They will be available to assist.) My parents eagerly looked forward to the smile Louise would bring, as well as her witty and very funny insight. If you're on the lookout for a trustworthy organization this is the one. Items will not go missing with Family First. As an example, we had been discussing my new favorite spray deodorant. As I was at the end of a bottle I offered it to Louise. Her expression was priceless. "Goodness, no! We never take any items from a client." (It never occurred to me how someone with dementia might start to give away important possessions.) I could go on and on and on about this organization. Big thumbs up!

We contacted Home Care Assistance who came and met with us to assess the level of care required and to find a caregiver with the required skill set to appropriately take care of my mother. They found 2 caregivers within a day and reviewed their qualifications and experience with us. We requested an interview with one of the caregivers which was immediately set up. After selecting the caregiver, our Client Manager accompanied her on the first day and stayed a while to ensure a smooth transition. Our Client Manager keeps in contact with us regularly to make sure things are going well and if there is anything additional she and the team can do to assist. It's hard enough deciding it's time to get a loved one some help, so choosing a home care provider is a very important decision. We are very happy with the care and interest Home Care Assistance staff and personnel have supplied with the care of my mother. In a fast moving world with numerous responsibilities to attend to daily, it's very comforting to know that there is someone there taking good care of my mother and to ensure she has everything she needs. In addition to finding qualified help, it was very reassuring to discover the honesty of our caregiver as well. With my mother's dementia and confusion that comes with it, she paid her caregiver $50 cash her first day. The caregiver brought it to my attention and handed me the money. I was so grateful for her honesty as many people these days could have easily kept it.

The next day a big man shows up to my Mothers house and goes into her bedroom; literally scaring her pants off. She was ready to call the police. My mother called me and I called Olga who then sent him home and gave us another care giver. This new caregiver barely did anything, complained, and was a disgrace of a person...let alone a "caregiver". Next day we were promised a new person and a new caregiver came but smelled like drugs and oils. She also stayed on her phone and acted like a rebellious teenager( barely doing any work and expecting to get paid) IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A NORMAL EXPERIENCE WITH A CARE GIVER..AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!!!

She came three hours late, when she was supposed to be at Plainview Hospital at 9am. She could talk about her son in great deal about how he was going out with a girl who had aides. She neglected my mom for three hours and my mom had to call up the agency to find out where she was. If anything bad would have happened, the aid would have gone to jail for neglect and the agency would have been held accountable legally. She also neglected my mom towards at the end of her life at Plainview Hospital. She went out for three hours, instead with my mom. My father came in the hospital room and didn't find her. She came back within hours and threw out of the room. On June 14 2024, my mom fell on the dining room floor. The aide Joyce didn't follow my father's instructions not to walk alone with her. Joyce the aide didn't call 911 and the agency. My father who I a retired physician did.
