    $20 score.

We came in on a Thursday afternoon (1.05.2023). I brought my mom here to buy some vinyls for her phonograph that I'd bought her for Christmas. I had heard this place was like Jelly's before, so I was excited to check it out. They've got tons of treasures to look through from vinyls, cd's, books, and more. Not only did my mom find some of what she'd been looking for, I found a copy of a Bible I had been eyeballing for only $20, normally costing almost $50, and in almost brand new condition. I totally recommend coming to Idea's for all kinds of used media treasures. Unlike some places in this area, across from Salt Kakaako, where it can be difficult to find parking, or you have to pay for parking.... Idea's is in a building across the street that has its own parking lot with ample stalls reserved specifically for their business! That's also a total plus for me, as I'm not one that gets too thrilled about coming to this part of town. We'll definitely be back again for more!

Ideas is run by Norm from Jelly's; if you're into music and reading, then you remember the various locations of this establishment. Records (new and used) have been making a comeback but I primarily go for used CD's. I have an older vehicle hence the need for the trusty and hardy music CD. Picked up a few Metallica (great driving music) CD's over the last several months. This afternoon, I purchased greatest hits from The Stylistics and The Intruders; luv that Philly Soul.

    Glimpse at today's haul.

I was struggling with finding parking for that other music store in the area because it was almost Christmas. Luckily it led me to stumble upon Ideas. This is what a music store should be: mix of new and old, memorabilia, books, and knowledgeable staff. They also play a great mix of music in the store. I'll be sure to come here for crate digging, books by local authors, and perusing rare and collectible toys. Also check out the eclectic mix of postcards, posters, and much more near the registers and the front door.

Previously owned books, music, movies, and more! I had never heard of Idea's before my friend from first grade mentioned it. She had to say it a couple of times before I figured out what it was. One of her missions on this trip from Virginia is to find vinyl records for her daughter - mostly Hawaiian music and songs that we listened to when we were her daughter's age... Haha! Using GPS, we found Idea's in a strip mall between Singer Sewing Machine and One Love Church on Auahi Street. There's a free parking lot right in front! We entered the neatly organized store and easily found the Hawaiian sections for music and books. I even saw an area for comics and movies! My friend found some really great deals! She bought so many records that the cashier gave her a tote bag for free! I think the bag is usually about $6. Whoa! Score! Anyway, I highly recommend Idea's if you are looking for second hand movies, books, and music! Just bring your own bag in case you're just getting a couple of items!

This store has so many books, records, DVDs, comics, anime, etc crammed into this store you might feel slightly claustrophobic! Not that I am complaining lol. I absolutely loved it! Being there, I felt like I had walked through time and entered a giant treasure trove haha! They have so many VINTAGE items here. I really enjoy books from the past, and this store is a collectors delight! The prices are a bit higher than other used bookstores, probably since they have items you won't find anywhere else though. I will definitely be back multiple times to browse what I didn't get to see this time around.

Probably it's because this store brings such a nostalgic feel of Jelly's and Tower Records that makes me want to roam in this store as long as I can because you honestly can get lost in exploring the entire store. I ventured here to kill time before my appointment that was nearby and as soon as I stepped in, I zeroed in on how the store was bursting at the seams with vinyl albums, CD's, and cassette tapes. As I walked towards the back, to the left side was a section for collectible comics. The rest of the back was overflowing with books that I'm pretty sure you won't find at Barnes and Nobles as some of the books were classics to include collectors items. I wanted to buy a book but I couldn't settle on one and I was pressed for time. All I know is that this isn't my last time visiting because I'll be back to take my time in the book section. Note: Their children's section is extensive if you're looking for your favorite childhood books Recommend: Highly Staff: Friendly and non-intrusive

Profits support the State of Hawai'i's 51 Public Libraries. In more recent years, FLH opened a year-round used bookstore: Village Books and Music, first at the old Pier One, then a terrific space in Ward Centre next to Sedona. Due to the imminent demolition of Ward Center, the establishment shuttered the Ward location on 5/31/26, and will be reopening in mid-July at 610 Ward Ave., a.k.a. "Obama Building." While not as extensive as more famous used bookstores, e.g. NYC's "The Strand" and Portland's "Powell's Books," I thought there was a lot to love about Village Books and Music, where you could find books, but also CDs, vinyl records, games, puzzles, nostalgic Hawai`i memorabilia, and even art. While admittedly not all genres are well-stocked, when I've visited, I was impressed with the poetry section, which is small, but nicely curated, featuring a number of renowned BIPOC poets and local poets: look carefully, and you can find some signed editions in great shape. If you're looking for local Hawai`i writers or Hawaiian/Pacific materials, this store is worth browsing. And what a win-win: you get literary goods on the cheap AND you support the amazing Hawai`i State Library System: a worthy community hub committed to egalitarian public education!

The store is spacious and well organized, with clearly arranged sections that make it easy to explore different genres. One thing that stood out to me is how the store still maintains the traditional bookstore experience even though it is located inside a busy shopping center. The layout encourages browsing, and it is easy to spend a good amount of time looking through titles and discovering books you were not originally planning to buy. Another highlight is the range of non-book items available throughout the store. You will find journals, gifts, educational toys, and other reading-related merchandise, which adds variety to the experience. The atmosphere is calm compared to many other areas of the mall, and the store tends to attract a mix of students, families, and casual readers looking for a quiet place to browse. It turned out to be in Downtown close to Chinatown. While it doesn't have the scale of the Last Bookstore, this store shares some of the unique design elements of its SoCal progenitor like curving shelves and large vinyl collection. A broad scan of the books on display reflects titles that seem more avant garde than more commercial curations with sections devoted to science fiction, horror, true crime, and rock music. Jamie found an existential book about his favorite band called "Queen and Philosophy" (Photo 9), while I bought an intriguing manga cosplay history book called "Otaku Japan" (Photo 5). We probably could've spent another hour in here, but we had manapua on our minds. RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/n9JWu5nlzl

The store blends two cultures that often go hand in hand: underground literature and vinyl records. The space itself feels very curated. Instead of a large commercial bookstore layout, the shop has a smaller, more intentional selection of titles and records that reflect niche interests, counterculture themes, and independent publishing. It feels like a place built for people who enjoy digging through shelves to discover something unexpected. One of the highlights is the mix of books and vinyl. The store carries everything from rare or independent books to records that span multiple genres, which creates an environment where music and literature intersect. Browsing through the collection feels more like exploring a curated archive than a traditional retail store. The atmosphere fits well with the Chinatown neighborhood. Bethel Street has a strong creative and artistic identity, and Skull-Face Books & Vinyl contributes to that scene with its alternative aesthetic and independent spirit. What stood out most to me was how personal the shop feels. Independent stores like this often reflect the personality of the people behind them, and that character comes through clearly in the selection and layout. Overall, Skull-Face Books & Vinyl is a great place to explore if you are in Chinatown and enjoy independent bookstores, vinyl records, and creative spaces that feel a little different from mainstream retail shops.

Sadly we don't have many bookstores on the island, there is of course Barnes and Noble, Bookoff, bookends, and few other stores. Bookoff also has a buyback counter, where you can sell your used movies, books, etc. but just be aware they are like the old saying where they only offer pennies on the dollar. So you won't make a lot of money selling here. But if you just want to get rid of stuff and make some money, this may be a good option for you.

Super professional, super smooth. Here's the best part: while I was waiting, I browsed around and found three gifts for my grandchildren that I knew they'd love. So in one trip I freed up a ton of space at home from books that had been taking up way too much room and knocked out some gift shopping. Win-win-win! The whole setup is easy too -- rolled the carts right from my car into the store, no stress. My friend was chillin' in the massage chair outside the whole time, so nobody's time was wasted. I was originally just gonna dump everything at Goodwill. So glad I didn't. I'm already planning to come back with my old DVDs and CDs just sitting my shed in the backyard.
