What a wonderful service and a reminder where you got your book from
    Irene M.

Nothing like a good book... Located across Marks Building as I was done with mailing a box next door at the post office i noticed this shop and decided to explore and walking in you take your shoes off right at the door to browse which I absolutely loved as it felt so calming. Recently we just added a bookshelf at work and thought that this would be a great place to find something to add for the kids as there's nothing like reading to explore your mind versus the table though yes it's reading as well but holding a book physically is what our kids are missing out and sadly so is the publication and book shops. Love to support local and keep reading going with so much here that offers various books that I do love but looking for the kids is so much more fun and there was so much here and narrowed it down to something for the teeniest cuties that i hope will enjoy as much as i did, don't forget that there's a 10% off discount with a Yelp check in which a wonderful deal as the price good book is priceless. Thank you!

    Lots of children's books

Native Books is a wonderful little book shop that features books about Hawaiian history and culture. They carry a wonderful assortment of children's and adult books. Some of the books are written in native Hawaiian, while most are in English. You can find biographies about the Hawaiian dynasties. Children's books carry stories that have been handed down for generations. Many of the books are by local Hawaiians. The shop is cozy. They prefer that you remove shoes after entering. There is also a work space upstairs. They were painting art wall when I visited. The staff is welcoming and knowledgable. They request that you do not bring in food or beverages. The books make perfect gifts and will help preserve Hawaiian culture and language. There is some street parking but it is at a premium unless you get there early. There is also a parking garage across the street.

Spent Mothers Day before a reservation at the Native Books shop on Nuuanu Avenue. The salesperson was friendly and asked if we were looking for something specifically. There are many antique Hawaiiana books, new books, prints, and a used book section of interesting fiction. The books are priced higher than what the original price was, as indicated by a sticker covering the original price on the back of the book. Use street parking or Mark's Garage to park your car.

Lovely book store that is island culture-centric? Take your footwear off at the front door

Such a wonderful asset to Honolulu, Native Books at Nu'uanu Arts & Letters is a treasure trove of books by and about Hawai'i. The space is an epic shared retail space, art gallery and work pods located upstairs. They have a large on-line presence in addition to the retail space meaning you can ship anywhere on the globe or buy online and pick up in store. The bookstore worth a stop and browse as this is a highly specialized subject matter and the staff is on hand to guide you with great choices. These are books you may not see anywhere else...My most recent purchase is a small book about the spiritual significance of the Hawaiian lunar calendar, published and printed here in Kāne'ohe. Additionally, this is a outfit dedicated to the preservation of Hawaiian history and culture. It's so important to support businesses like this.

Native Books is such a rarity, and owner Maile Meyer is a gem. We are lucky to have such a bookstore downtown.

When Jamie W and I heard that Josh Spencer, the owner of LA's legendary Last Bookstore (review:…read morehttps://yelp.to/PBt2J99ygG) had opened a bookstore in Honolulu, we decided to look for it on our recent Oahu adventure. It turned out to be in Downtown close to Chinatown. While it doesn't have the scale of the Last Bookstore, this store shares some of the unique design elements of its SoCal progenitor like curving shelves and large vinyl collection. A broad scan of the books on display reflects titles that seem more avant garde than more commercial curations with sections devoted to science fiction, horror, true crime, and rock music. Jamie found an existential book about his favorite band called "Queen and Philosophy" (Photo 9), while I bought an intriguing manga cosplay history book called "Otaku Japan" (Photo 5). We probably could've spent another hour in here, but we had manapua on our minds. RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/n9JWu5nlzl

The store blends two cultures that often go hand in hand: underground literature and vinyl records. The space itself feels very curated. Instead of a large commercial bookstore layout, the shop has a smaller, more intentional selection of titles and records that reflect niche interests, counterculture themes, and independent publishing. It feels like a place built for people who enjoy digging through shelves to discover something unexpected. One of the highlights is the mix of books and vinyl. The store carries everything from rare or independent books to records that span multiple genres, which creates an environment where music and literature intersect. Browsing through the collection feels more like exploring a curated archive than a traditional retail store. The atmosphere fits well with the Chinatown neighborhood. Bethel Street has a strong creative and artistic identity, and Skull-Face Books & Vinyl contributes to that scene with its alternative aesthetic and independent spirit. What stood out most to me was how personal the shop feels. Independent stores like this often reflect the personality of the people behind them, and that character comes through clearly in the selection and layout. Overall, Skull-Face Books & Vinyl is a great place to explore if you are in Chinatown and enjoy independent bookstores, vinyl records, and creative spaces that feel a little different from mainstream retail shops.

Profits support the State of Hawai'i's 51 Public Libraries. In more recent years, FLH opened a year-round used bookstore: Village Books and Music, first at the old Pier One, then a terrific space in Ward Centre next to Sedona. Due to the imminent demolition of Ward Center, the establishment shuttered the Ward location on 5/31/26, and will be reopening in mid-July at 610 Ward Ave., a.k.a. "Obama Building." While not as extensive as more famous used bookstores, e.g. NYC's "The Strand" and Portland's "Powell's Books," I thought there was a lot to love about Village Books and Music, where you could find books, but also CDs, vinyl records, games, puzzles, nostalgic Hawai`i memorabilia, and even art. While admittedly not all genres are well-stocked, when I've visited, I was impressed with the poetry section, which is small, but nicely curated, featuring a number of renowned BIPOC poets and local poets: look carefully, and you can find some signed editions in great shape. If you're looking for local Hawai`i writers or Hawaiian/Pacific materials, this store is worth browsing. And what a win-win: you get literary goods on the cheap AND you support the amazing Hawai`i State Library System: a worthy community hub committed to egalitarian public education!

The store is spacious and well organized, with clearly arranged sections that make it easy to explore different genres. Walking through the aisles feels relaxed, and there is a wide selection of books ranging from best sellers and new releases to classics and specialty topics. One thing that stood out to me is how the store still maintains the traditional bookstore experience even though it is located inside a busy shopping center. The layout encourages browsing, and it is easy to spend a good amount of time looking through titles and discovering books you were not originally planning to buy. Another highlight is the range of non-book items available throughout the store. You will find journals, gifts, educational toys, and other reading-related merchandise, which adds variety to the experience. The atmosphere is calm compared to many other areas of the mall, and the store tends to attract a mix of students, families, and casual readers looking for a quiet place to browse. Sadly we don't have many bookstores on the island, there is of course Barnes and Noble, Bookoff, bookends, and few other stores. After Borders closed, we don't have many places to go to buy brand new books except for Walmart or Target. However, there are many good finds here and a chance to give some used books/media/toys a new home. The staff here are very nice, though of course they don't have a system catalog here. But that's part of the fun, the treasure hunting fun. You never know what you may find. Bookoff also has a buyback counter, where you can sell your used movies, books, etc. but just be aware they are like the old saying where they only offer pennies on the dollar. So you won't make a lot of money selling here. But if you just want to get rid of stuff and make some money, this may be a good option for you.

The owner greeted me right away with that warm, aloha spirit energy. No attitude, no long drawn-out process. She got straight to scanning my old dusty books while I waited, and when she was done, she texted me -- yes, texted me -- to let me know. Walked up, got my receipt, got my quote. Super professional, super smooth. Here's the best part: while I was waiting, I browsed around and found three gifts for my grandchildren that I knew they'd love. So in one trip I freed up a ton of space at home from books that had been taking up way too much room and knocked out some gift shopping. Win-win-win! The whole setup is easy too -- rolled the carts right from my car into the store, no stress. My friend was chillin' in the massage chair outside the whole time, so nobody's time was wasted. I was originally just gonna dump everything at Goodwill. So glad I didn't. I'm already planning to come back with my old DVDs and CDs just sitting my shed in the backyard. If you've got stuff collecting dust at home, bring it here first. You might walk out with cash in your pocket and a smile on your face. Highly recommend. 5/5, no question!
