I'm very very picky when it comes to where I go to get my hair cut. When my trusted barber up and left for warmer climates, I was thrust into the anxiety inducing process of finding someone new. Call it deep rooted trust issues. Call it a touch of narcissistic self preservation. My hair is important to me. I had seen a friend in Instagram (not as in like we are just friends on Instagram... I know him in real life. I just saw a photo he posted on Instagram that was of himself) post a baller hairdo. I immediately plunged into his DM's begging for the deets. (An aside: Michael has really good hair. Like really good. Check him out @mazed_michael on Insta.) His response to my inquiry - Idle Hands. After doing a deep dive into their barbers and stylists, I made a choice. Made and appointment. Part of me doesn't want to mention who I chose so that this person doesn't get even more popular thus making it harder to book, but to be honest Brandon did such an amazing job on my hair that I have to give him a shout out. From the moment I sat down in his chair, I knew I was in good hands. Brandon is incredibly personable and a great conversationalist. I was nervous I wasn't going to feel cool enough to get my hair cut at Idle Hands, but Brandon is a cool dude I'd like to get a beer with. In fact, that was the whole vibe of Idle Hands. It felt like a group of friends just hanging out. You don't often get that atmosphere in other salons. So kudos to the crew from Idle Hands for developing an awesome space. Customer service seems to be of utmost importance to both Brandon and the whole staff at Idle Hands. I love that they make it so easy to rebook after you are done with your services. There's never a moment that you feel rushed or pressured. The staff doesn't push expensive products on you or try to upsell you on other services. It's a very laid back experience. And let me tell you I was SO happy with my first haircut from Brandon at Idle Hands that I've almost completely forgotten I ever went to another barber. It was love at first snip.

Beautiful wall murals by Shani and some stations safely divided.

I really wanted to love my experience here because the salon itself is absolutely beautiful, and…read moreevery staff member I interacted with was warm, friendly, and welcoming. Unfortunately, the actual service I received was not what I paid for. I booked and paid $90 specifically for a curly haircut, which is a reasonable price in this area for a true curly specialist service. However, what I received felt more like a standard haircut rather than a curly cut. Before the appointment started, I thoroughly explained what I was hoping to achieve: more curl definition lasting beyond wash day, guidance on styling techniques, and a haircut tailored specifically for curly hair. Despite this, my hair was cut wet rather than dry, and there was no curl-by-curl shaping or specialized curly cutting technique used at all. As the appointment continued, several things made me question the stylist's experience level with curly hair. My stylist, Anna, seemed unprepared for the appointment. While styling, my hair was already drying and becoming frizzy in the front before products were even fully applied, and I had to point out that it needed to be re-wet. She also did not have her own diffuser and had to borrow one from coworkers. I had specifically mentioned that curl creams tend to weigh my hair down, but one was still used during styling. The diffusing process itself was also very uncomfortable, as I was instructed to hang the lower half of my body off the chair so my neck rested against the back of it. By the time my hair was almost fully dry, it honestly looked very similar to how it did when I walked in -- like I had showered, slept on wet hair, and done nothing else to style it. That was extremely disappointing after paying for a professional curly hair service. Anna could tell I was unhappy, and to her credit, she was kind and tried to fix things by washing the product out and attempting a blowout instead. Unfortunately, I still left with poorly styled hair. The face-framing pieces were going in different directions, and the overall result did not look professionally styled. I do want to emphasize that Anna herself was very sweet and pleasant throughout the appointment. However, when charging $90 for a curly haircut, a certain level of expertise and preparation is expected, and I do not feel that level of skill or knowledge was there. When booking, I specifically told the salon owner I was looking for an experienced curly hair specialist. I was told Anna was newer to the salon but had experience with curly hair and many happy clients. I truly hope this experience was just a one-off, but based on the multiple issues throughout the appointment, it did not feel like someone with advanced curly hair knowledge or technique. The owner did initially reach out afterward to try to rectify the situation, which I appreciated. However, after I responded, I unfortunately never heard back again. I had been very excited to come here because I've heard so many wonderful things about the salon, which makes this experience even more disappointing. I truly hope they take this feedback seriously because the salon itself has a great atmosphere and very kind staff.

It just feels like a place where great things happen. Booking was quick and easy through their online platform. I arrived early and was taken exactly at my appointment time for a haircut. I told Angela my priorities - I wanted to cut off as little as possible (a "baby trim" she called it) and I wanted to touch up my long layers. I was immediately at ease when I saw her take what can only be described as the tiniest snip off of my ends. She's skilled in her craft and is efficient with her time. My haircut from consult to finishing touches was 45 minutes flat. I get my hair cut maybe once or twice a year now, and I'll definitely be back. Maybe next time they'll have Diet Coke in the fridge instead of just Pepsi products . Overall great experience, very happy with my hair.

Angela was so helpful and gave me exactly what I wanted in less than an hour, hair wash and blowout included, which accommodated my work schedule well. She was also incredibly friendly and sweet, I felt so comfortable with her just gabbing about life and our love of animals. I am genuinely looking forward to my next haircut with her! The salon itself is also light, airy, and really well decorated with a mcm vibe. The street parking is also plentiful and easy. Would definitely recommend checking out this salon and its stylists!

What I left with was a chemical war zone on my scalp and hair that looked like it had been through a haunted car wash. The stylist completely botched my color. It was patchy, uneven, and flat-out fried. I looked like a spaghetti squash that had been left out in the sun. Worse. I went back to give them a chance to fix it and it somehow got even worse. The stylist acted like they had never seen a toner in their life and honestly seemed like they were not in a sober state to be handling bleach or scissors or any other living creature for that matter. I ended up going to another salon just to undo the damage and they were horrified at what had been done to my hair. After spending over six hundred dollars and enduring two appointments from hell, my hair is still damaged beyond repair. Think straw with commitment issues. Do yourself a favor. So when you strike gold, it's worth sharing. I've recently been coming to Homegrown Hair Co. and Paige is now my permanent stylist FOREVER. Like seriously this girl better not up and move. She is friendly and funny and immediately you know this girl loves what she does. She consults and goes over ideas and suggestions and together we figure out what the heck is going on with my hair. I tend to change my style a lot but Paige moves full force with me and never skips a beat. The salon itself is beautiful. The walls are brought to life with collages from magazine clippings and dried flowers. I can sip a canned cocktail and chill out for a few hours and not feel a sense of rush or urgency. There doesn't need to be mirrors on the wall. I can sit in that chair and know I'm going to look fire when I leave. Period.

From the bleach treatment, my hair is extremely damaged and the red color faded after 3 washes in cold water/with color safe shampoo/conditioner. I contacted salon, and they redid the red color, and again the same fading happened. They also didn't use a toner at all during this process. I've gotten my hair done by a different stylist at a different salon to fix it, but the bleach treatment that was done at Homegrown was so damaging that no red color is sticking to my hair at all anymore. I've had my hair colored red before and never had any problems with the color sticking--but it was never bleached before that red. I paid $385 for the first color appt at Homegrown and tipped $80. Since then, I have tried and tried to contact Homegrown to get a refund as I've had to pay even more to try and fix it with a new stylist. Homegrown ghosted me after multiple people at their salon gaslighted me saying it was "my hair and hair changes" and that they were "writing down my message and would have management contact me". It's been weeks and I haven't heard anything back. Do not trust these people with your hair. Mine is now very damaged and there's nothing I can do to keep the red color I initially asked for.
