I enjoy that the process for booking something online is very simple and straightforward, they send you reminders, you were able to pre-pay, and they're easy to get in contact with. You can park on the street immediately in front on an hour by hour basis, or if you want to walk a couple blocks, you can park in the neighborhoods behind the main central West End area. When you enter, you are offered some tea or coffee or water, always something I appreciate. The receptionist is very welcoming as is the staff. Had a really positive experience getting my hair washed and styled with Marina! She was very easy to talk to and did a great job on my hair - she blew it out and used an iron to curl my hair and the curls did not budge! They even held their shape until the next day (without my hair feeling stiff or crunchy!). The salon is very clean and professional with a warm and friendly vibe. It was my first time visiting this salon and they gave a nice little goodie bag after my appointment (they have these goodie bags for all their first time clients!). I have a regular mani/pedi at Philip Johnson Salon in the CWE and I absolutely love this experience. It's so refreshing to walk into the salon where Josh the owner greets you with a warm, friendly smile and he knows your name. Pamela does an outstanding job on my hands and feet. She uses Aveda products and nail polish options include the Zoya brand. I absolutely love the fact that the mani/pedi room is private-no cellphones ringing; no noise; no listening to other people's conversations; no chemical smells or odors-just an emphasis on total relaxation in a calming and healthy environment. I get my hair cut very irregularly, like sometimes going years between cuts... Well, I just got my hair cut AND COLORED (first time ever) plus I immediately made my next appointment for 8 weeks out. Marina listened to my concerns (which were admittedly few) and took off the 6 inches of hair that I've been wanting gone! The salon is open and bright and very attractively designed. Title: If You Value Your Hair, Go Somewhere Else! I cannot believe how disastrous my experience at this salon was. I went in with clear instructions: grow out my layers and go a little lighter with my color. I walked out with shorter layers and darker hair! How does that even happen? It's as if they heard the exact opposite of what I wanted. On top of that, this place is a trap of hidden fees. I went in for a balayage that was supposed to be $125. I ended up getting charged for an "extra bowl of lightener" ($15), toner ($25), a root touch-up ($70), another "extra bowl of color" ($15), and a haircut I didn't ask for ($60). My total came out to an absurd $310! And the worst part? They used too much lightener, botched it, and then covered it up with toner, all while charging me for both. I walked out with hair I didn't want and a bill that felt like robbery. If you want a salon that listens, respects your choices, and is upfront about costs, do not come here. read more

Absolutely worst hair salon! I asked for highlights and an overall blonde look (booked with Daniel huge mistake) and somehow left with absolutely no change in my color at all! He charged me for extra color too, when again I left with my hair the same shade as I came with, no highlights could even be seen. Moved to St. Louis recently enough that I didn't have a go-to salon yet. Philip Johnson has a convenient location in CWE. One downside that's good to know ahead: parking is metered. The salon is doing AMAZING with covid protocols. When you arrive, you are let in and immediately use hand sanitizer, fill out covid screening (with pens that are sanitized) and have temp taken. The stations have plexiglass dividers and there are limited appointments to allow for enough distancing. Staff were all wearing masks. I felt very comfortable with their safety precautions. The actual haircut and process was great - my stylist did exactly what I asked, was super friendly, skilled, and professional. She was careful not to cut too much and was able to make my hair look and feel much healthier! read more

I got my first cut here and the outcome is okay but nothing what I asked for. I asked for long layers, but there is no layers whatsoever, not even a tiny bit. Also Aveda treatment did absolutely nothing to my blond hair, it's still dry, waste of $25. All the products that were applied for volume worked only for 30 min. The stylist was professional tho, but she wasn't able to create what I envisioned, so I'm not coming back. Photos show what I wanted and what I got. I have been going to this salon for 2 years now and I have been consistently impressed with my experiences here. This salon is cozy and has a elegant,cosmopolitan vibe to it. I recently saw Sarah and she did a great job; clearly a very experienced professional who is very talented with a blow dryer and a round brush. I had a great scalp massage, hand massage, and even some soothing guided deep breathing while she shampooed my hair. I have been referring my friends and family to this place-they too have great experiences here. The only downside here for me is that street parking is sometimes challenging to find. read more

I had selected a bob from someone on insta and she recommended--after asking me lifestyle questions--that I go to collarbone length which was about an inch longer than originally intended, for versatility (being able to pull back into bun or pony if needed), and she was right on the money. Awful experience. Amanda started to cut my hair without showing me how much she was going to cut off. No heat protectant was used and after asking for my hair to be blow dried and styled she responded with "it won't last, I would have to get a curling iron" which makes no sense. I have had my hair blow dried and styled tens of times from a salon. I left in less than 40 minutes which has never happened with the texture and length of my hair. She also did not show any signs of friendliness or compassion while confidently cut my hair. I asked for long layers and left with a trim and face framing. DO NOT GET AMANDA. I regret spending $68 and am genuinely still upset about my experience weeks later considering I trusted Philip Johnson with my hair before my college graduation. After searching online, a blogger strongly suggested Philip Johnson Salon (PJS). The salon is so classy and affordable. My hairdresser, Megan at PJS, is amazing! This is the first time I can honestly say I absolutely love my hair. It's stylish, fun and easy to manage. I have received so many compliments. They called me the following Monday. I got an appointment in and had Caroline do my hair. She listened to my concerns and I showed her some pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like. She delivered! It was beautifully done. End product? Subtle caramel bayalage highlights. Definitely going back to her if I want to do something else with my hair! Philip Johnson Salon and Spa is my knight in shining armor. After wearing my hair a certain way for twenty years in SC, I moved here two years ago. Finding a hairstylist to give you a curly perm is a scary ordeal. You have to find someone new to trust. I had tried another salon but that did not work out at all. I had to make a consultation appointment which costs $25.00, but that cost would be taken off of the price of the perm. Made an appointment with Crystal to come back and have it done. Glossing treatment: this is perfect if you have a some color in your hair. The treatment will tone down the color and also add a lot of shine to your hair. The treatment will last 3 months. If you don't have color in your hair, you can do a clear coating and get the same effect! I usually get the glossing treatment every 2-3 mo whenever I get my haircut! Highly recommend!
