After going an embarrassing five months without a haircut, I decided to head over to Lemon Spalon this afternoon in hopes of some serious hair help. I've heard good things (and also heard they were pricey) but thought I'd go for it anyway... when you go five months without a haircut I guess it's easier to afford a more expensive salon visit. Love the location right on Euclid in the heart of the West End... there were a few meters open and parking was pretty easy considering the popularity of the area. The place is adorable and has a tiny waiting area that's lofted up from the rest of the salon... so cozy. Rusty, the owner's Jack Russell Terrier, is the cutest little guy ever and just wanders all around the salon checking things out. Today I had an appointment with Shelly and she had her work cut out for her. She was really attentive and assured me we could fix the mess I called my hair. My favorite part of a haircut is when the stylist washes your hair and gives you a mini head massage - she definitely did that and it was much appreciated. (Could you not lay there all day while someone gave you one of those?) She cut all the dead ends off my hair and gave me new layers, and also blow-dried and styled my hair so I didn't look like a weirdo at happy hour, which I was heading to right after my appointment. She was really fun to talk to and made it a great experience! My total haircut/dry bill with a tip was $70 bucks. Yikes! I expected that though after checking out prices online. I'll have a better idea once I style my hair in the morning, but I'm pretty sure it was worth it. read more

I've been coming here for a couple years and used to see Waldir, who was amazing. Unfortunately, he moved away and I went to see Heather today and I am so unhappy with my haircut. The entire experience left so much to be desired. Firstly, I had to wait 20 minutes past my appointment time to even sit down in the chair (which initially, I was not bothered by because I had nothing else going on today, but it just kept going downhill from there). Next, she decided to cut my hair dry, which again, is fine if the end result is a good haircut, which it wasn't. My hair is so choppy, even after I asked for it to be blended out and I don't like it at all, but decided to just quit while I was ahead, rather than losing more and more length by asking her to fix it. She also did not wash or blow dry my hair, but charged me the regular price for a haircut/blow dry, which I think is just poor customer service (don't provide me less service than is standard and then charge me full price -- I will mention, I did get the BJC/WUSM discount, but that's something they offer for all services, as advertised). Her next appointment arrived about 10 minutes before my haircut was finished, so I'm guessing there is an issue with timing out appointments and then they randomly decide which client gets screwed to get back on track for the day. Unfortunately, I was the client who received rushed, poor service today, which is a huge bummer because I loved Waldir's haircuts so much! read more

Heather and I hung out at Lemon the other day and she showed me several new ideas for coping with the "awkward bang phase" that I'm currently experiencing. Normally our appointments together only last about 30 minutes, but since she had a cancellation and it was the middle of the afternoon, she took the time to show me the in's and out's of backcombing as well as the importance of quality hair spray :) She also styled my hair for the evening, since I was hosting an event and she wanted it to look extra-good. My second visit to Lemon Spalon was on a Tuesday, and I went in especially since there is a great $20 deal. Matt was my stylist, and he was super friendly! I enjoyed chatting with him and his company as a person, but I do think he did a bad job on my hair cut. I liked the shape and style of my hair, and simply asked for a trim and to clean up my bangs. Well, the trim turned into 2 inches being cut off, and also horrible shaping for my face framing layers. I had told him about how another hair stylist made a mistake with my layers, really trying to emphasize that I didn't like the layers and was trying to grow them to properly fit my face. Well, they ended up looking worse after I left on Tuesday. So once again I keep searching for a salon... again, I really liked Matt as a person to talk with, but wouldn't trust him with my hair again. read more

Shelley is amazing. I highly recommend her for any color work you are considering getting done. She worked very hard to get my hair to the perfect metallic silver/grey shade I wanted and I have gotten many compliments on it. Metallics are hard to achieve, especially when you're working with stubborn Asian hair like mine, but Shelley made it happen. She seemed very informed about the process and various coloring trends going on right now. I would go back to her for more unconventional dye jobs in the future. Also nice touches that I enjoyed were the festive Halloween decorations everywhere, as well as the bowl of chocolate/various candy at the front desk. The front desk girl is lovely and brought me hot tea of my choice to sip on while waiting for my hair to process--very relaxing and soothing spa touch! Overall, very nice and professional staff who know what they are doing in terms of coloring and customer service! Tip: you get a nice surprise 30% off when you check-in on yelp and share your check-in on facebook. This brought down my $90 dye job to about $60, which was a lovely deal, especially for the quality of work and professional skill you are receiving. read more

I appreciate their attempts at conversation but this lengthens the overall experience of the haircut and most of us have places to be. So I bought a Groupon and I have been waiting for a special occasion to use it. First, I had a brow waxing by Traci. I have Brooke Shieldesque eyebrows and I just told Traci to work her magic and she spent a lot of time transforming my brows to the best form they have ever been yet still looking totally like myself. I never had a person spend so much time paying attention to every little hair to make them look perfect. I had a haircut and style by Heather, the owner of the salon. Her little jack russell is such a cute staple of the salon. It was fun talking to her about the runnings of a salon. She took her time making sure it was just right. This Groupon was a fantastic deal! If I were not moving to Chicago, I would definitely be back soon but hopefully will return when I make a trip back. read more

If you're wanting to get your hair conditioned at this place, don't bother! They charge you an arm and a leg for it and they don't even blow dry your hair. So here you are walking out of the salon on a nice, sunny afternoon in the CWE with wet hair and no money left over to get a cupcake to cheer yourself up! Granted there may be other services which might be good here, but I am solely rating this for their "hair conditioning" services. When I get my hair conditioned at a salon, I expect it to be better than something I can do on my own at home. It wasn't, in fact, when I got up to the counter to pay, it would have been cheaper for me to buy the darn deep conditioning bottle and do it myself 10 times over. Despite my own personal experience, this "spalon" is super cute. Maybe I will try other services another time, I am willing to give this place another shot. I mean, the quality of the service wasn't too bad. It's just that it doesn't make much sense spending a lot of money on something you can do yourself OR can have done cheaper and better elsewhere. I had a GREAT experience at Lemon Spalon. In fact, since April, I have been back 3 times! The people are super nice! I originally went to Lemon Spalon for an updo test run for my wedding (5/30/10). I absolutely fell in love the updo style that Denny did. Unfortunately, he wasn't available for my wedding day which was also in CA :o( Denny also cut my bangs for the look I wanted - which made me fall in love with him as a stylist. When I returned before my wedding, I got a haircut with Denny - trim my hair and cut the bangs, etc. I thought the cut was GREAT - and I was so happy to find someone in St Louis to cut my hair - for the past 12 years I was loyally going to my stylist in CA...only cutting my hair when I flew out to visit friends and family. This month, I decided to get another haircut - so I went on their website and saw the special for a haircut / facial combo for 20% off. The facial with Traci was awesome!!! She extracted all my blackheads and made my skin so smooth! I loved it and I'm still glowing! Also, you can add a microderm treatment for an additional fee. I didn't do it because I had a haircut scheduled right after the facial - otherwise I would have. I got the haircut with Denny and LOVE IT! Lastly, I think the prices are just right for the quality of services they provide - I am really happy, and feel that I got a great deal! I would say the only cons are the parking - CWE can get busy and make sure you bring change for the meters. Also, the steps at the front. It can't be good for those who can't go up stairs. read more

I'll be honest, at first I was like "$24 for an eyebrow wax?!" And then I met Traci. She is a perfectionist! I now have killer eyebrows, and will happily shell out $30 a month to maintain them. You get to lay on like a massage table, which honestly does make a big difference as far as comfort level. Traci is efficient, but thorough. And she doesn't try to upsell you other services. But if the next time she told me that I needed blah blah blah facial because it would help my skin, there's a pretty good likelihood that I would give it a try. read more

Confession: I cheated on my hairdresser. Well, she is in San Francisco after all. I have been fortunate enough to strategically schedule haircuts during my trips home to SF but after two years I just couldn't pull it off. I am stranded in STL indefinitely and my tresses were starting to resemble a raggedy old kitchen mop. Per a referral from a dear friend, I booked a cut with Denny. One word: AWESOME. He needed very little explanation and did an all around great job. He clearly knows how protective women with long hair are so he double checked that I really wanted an INCH cut off. I really like this place. Allie is great! (She's friendly, but not in a fake way) Not only did she make me feel at ease during my wax session, but she did an awesome and speedy job! The place has a retro vibe and the jack russell terrier that hangs out at the salon is super cute. I had to wait a little bit for my appointment but only because the woman that was in front of me was getting the works with a last minute appointment. I recently moved from Chicago and was in a desperate search for a fab salon in my CWE neighborhood. Lemon did not dissapoint. I've been to Heather twice for a haircut and was more than satisfied with cut and style each time. She provided some good tips on how to replicate the style and explained what products she was using. I received several compliments from friends and family regarding my cut and plan on returning for additional haircuts. I also had a brow waxing from Traci. She was so sweet and spent a lot of time with me to make sure my eyebrows were perfect. The receptionist are also extremely nice and helpful and squeezed me into a last minute appointment one evening. Really appreciate the salon's customer service from the entire staff. The only downside is that they are a little pricey. I paid $60 for my haircut (plus tip) and about $30 for brow and lip. But you get what you pay for, so if you can afford it...I highly reccomend checking out Lemon. There is nothing and I mean nothing I would like to see change about Lemon Spalon. I have been going for less than a year and have already been through two haircuts, one emergency last minute haircut (which was handled drama-free) and an eyebrow waxing. When you enter the doors of its second floor Manhattanish walk-up, the vibe you get puts you at ease. Chicness is not always welcoming. The Lemon is very chic and very welcoming. Not to mention Maynard the French Bulldog who purveys and welcomes everyone who enters. I see Matthew. There is artistry and easiness with Matthew. He's amazing. Traci is the person who does that waxing. Listening to her friendly Texas drawl as she deftly rips out rows of folliclesa makes the task less hellish. I also like the drinks they offer you during service. The Lemon is perfect for a new cut and then meeting friends after for sushi at Drunken Fish...or cocktails at Bar Italia both of which are steps from the salon. Thank you Lemon. For Everything. I've been a regular at Lemon Spalon for about 4 years now. Up until then, I'd had a so-so relationship with the Face & Body on Forsyth (now Brentwood). I think it's important to have a meaningful relationship with your waxer, and I never really found that at F&B...... And then I met Judith. She does a killer brazilian and she's a wonderful conversationalist, so you don't even focus on the task at hand! Book your appointment in advance, because the word has spread and her services are much sought-after. Traci is also an excellent choice, but she does not yet do brazilians. I would HIGHLY recommend either of these fantastic women for brow and lip, although their styles differ. I don't even want to think about how much money I've dropped there in the last 4 years, but it's been well worth it. read more

She turned my "can't show my face" nightmare into a modern Cinderella clip'n'style! Besides her "can-do", fun approach to my mess--she gave me a scalp massage out of this world. I was taken to another time and space for those few marvelous moments. One of her co-stylists, even through a few quarters at my meter so I wouldn't have to rumble with the metermaid/meterperson. I've been going here for two years now and am finally writing a review. I go there for Brazilian waxing, eyebrow waxing, and hair cut/color. Traci does an amazing job waxing. Brazilian waxing can be really uncomfortable but Traci makes it seem like a relaxing spa treatment. I don't know anywhere else where you actually don't dread going in for your Brazilian. Eyebrow waxing with her is definitely more expensive than most but so worth it--her attention to detail gives you literally flawless brows. And as far as hair goes, I've been going to Matthew for a couple years now as well and he's great. Very up on the trends and knows exactly what I mean when I come in and say "I want it to look like (whatever celebrity)'s hair". Also sometimes there's a super cute French bulldog hanging out and that just makes my day! read more

One word: KENSEY. Kensey is an amazing hair stylist and listens to every detail about the cut that you want. After going a year without a haircut, trying to grow out the horrible cut I had previously gotten, I knew it was time to get it fixed. I was absolutely traumatized by my last cut and became hopeless as the girl who gave me the bad cut had been my stylist for 3 years! So I actually came to this Yelp page and saw that everyone was raving about Kensey, and they were absolutely right about her. She is so sweet, and understands everything that you want. I told her not to use the razor sheers or thinning shears, and she did just that. She point-cut my hair all the way through, and I ended up with great, fresh layers just in time for school. She also gave me great highlights that look completely natural! She has become my new stylist and I will not let anyone else touch my hair! read more

Rude and expensive. Haircuts start at $45 for women, apparently, but my short hair for some reason costs $63 to cut and I don't find that out until after the cut? Why do we tolerate that at all? I'm also not entirely sure why another stylist in the salon thought it appropriate to come by and make fun of the fact that my hair is thin by comparing it to my stylist's balding head. Kindness costs nothing. I will not be going back and don't recommend it to others. I give them two stars because the haircut was alright. read more

I couldn't wait to get back to my hotel room to write this review. First of all there is a dog in here owned by one of the stylists, a french bull dog named Wilbur who sits on your lap and is unleashed. Yesterday I spoke to a receptionist and told her I only want a fun cotton candy pink, lavender and cotton candy blue look. The receptionist was so upbeat and said yes they had all those fun colors. I walked in with my therapy dog. I have epileptic attacks and she comforts me. The salon was just not cleanly but I walked in without any judgment and since my stylist was not yet ready I walked my dog outside and came back in. I told her I wanted half my hair cotton candy blue and the other side soft pink. They talked me out of what I wanted and she proceeded to ask me if I wanted a new cut. I said that was NOT what I wanted since I am trying to let my short layers grow out. She then used a fromesi bleach of 30 volume and stuck me under a hair dryer. She lied to me and said she would only leave the bleach on under the dryer for 10 minutes. My hair is already dry and very curly so now my hair is stiff since she neglected to use a deep conditioning product on me. There are parts of my hairline she left out. I have brown hair sticking around the edges and under my neck there are golden rings. Honestly I paid for this? I asked for pink and blue and she went through the FARCE of using pink with her brush all over scattered in my hair and the only place that held color was my bangs. She used too high of a bleach and was in such a hurry to get me out the of my salon chair that she did not allow the bleach to process long enough. I could have spend $80 in Chicago to have much better service yet they charged me $150 and all the pink and blue was washed out of my hair completely since she used really hot water on my tender scalp then used shampoo! Who uses shampoo after coloring your hair? Everything here was ridiculous from the dog that is all over you and in your face unleashed and able to roam free to the kids that marched up the stairs that scared my dog. I would never never recommend this dive place to anyone. The owner was really nasty to me. I was so hurt when she screamed at my dog. These kids ran up the stairs to the salon and of course my dog is going to bark so the stylist yelled at my dog to shut up. Imagine an unclean salon, people who don't know how to achieve the look you want and expect you to just take their suggestions and bullying attitude. They have big attitudes here and I never asked for a dime of my money back but now I wish I had. I had some blue here in my luggage that I used in my hair but this is not the service I expected. I f you want fashion forward looks don't go here. Most of the clientele here were middle aged woman who don't expect much. If you are fussy like me and progressive thinking with fun ideas they won't listen to you nor will they know how to work with color. Who sticks someone under a dryer for a full 20 minutes with bleach at 30 volume? They are careless and truly not savvy. At the end of my services one of the stylists said to me the following : "I KNOW PEOPLE LIKE YOU!" Um you mean nice people who get ripped off and treated like dog shit? At the end of the day you want to feel good about a new color or style I just felt awful and in two weeks someone from another salon is going to have to undo their mistakes. My hairline is still brown so she obviously is CARE LESS. I hate going into a salon where no one listens and the stylist is sloppy with the bleach process. My dog did not deserve to be yelled at and I should have insisted on a full refund but I am sharing this information on line instead with people who do care about their hair. Just because I am a tourist from another city doesn't mean I want to be treated to a bad service. read more

It's not that the experience itself was substantially less pleasant than usual (who likes getting the hair ripped out of their vajay?), but it was slightly more painful, it took about twice as long as the same procedure performed at other salons, and the result was a botched job. Not sure if this was just an off day for the waxer, but I take my coochie very seriously so I won't be going back here. So, if you're trying to find just the right place for an especially intimate spa service, I'd keep looking (I feel bad about giving this place two stars, as everyone was so nice and the waxer had to look at my vagina for a few minutes, which should merit some sort of implied sisterhood... mais, non). read more
