Great place for a quick lunch/dinner. Good food, very friendly service, and nice outdoor seating area.

Would recommend this place to everyone! Such a cool venue and right around the corner from the beach. We were staying down the street and stopped in on the way to our evening beach walk, put in a Togo order then grabbed it on the way home. The staff was so nice and the food was great! Have been coming here regularly for two years and this is hands down my favorite spot in AB or MHC. I have heard great things about the rest of the menu, but to be honest I stick to the blackened fish tacos or the bratwurst. Perfection. Oh, and did I mention liter beers!? Staff is the best! Good beer selection and food, disastrous operation. The day we went, March 26th, they couldn't decide if they were open or closed and the staff was openly hostile (to patrons and each other). Basically they acted like they were doing us a favor seating us and letting us stay despite their kitchen backing up to an hour wait. Let's hope that this was an early season problem and they'll get their act together because the food was good and the outdoor area is pretty nice. read more

A great find! While on vacation in the area, Idle Hour was recommended to us by a local we met at Atlantic Beach. Upon arrival, we found a great table outside (where large communal tables are shared) and met some more friendly locals. (From what we could tell, the indoor seating was limited, crowded and noisy, so we were happy to take advantage of the good weather and sit outside.) We tried beer flights from Germany and North Carolina - both pretty tasty. Also ordered the artichoke and onion spread (delicious!), the crispy onion strings (more, please!), the German Grilled Cheese (very good), and the Crab Cake Sandwich (so fresh!) and we cleaned our plates. Good service, and really nice atmosphere - beachy, relaxed vibe. Even though we are technically tourists, we didn't want to go anyplace too 'touristy' and Idle Hour was perfect. Will return on our next visit! *I am deducting 1 star because there are no umbrellas or rain protection over the outdoor tables, so a very brief shower did dampen our dinner a bit. And, for some reason, the same 2 songs kept playing on repeat over the restaurant's sound system, which eventually became more hilarious than bothersome. read more

Great little place right by the beach with picnic table outdoor seating like a german beer garten. The food here was excellent. We got the flounder special, crab cake sandwich and yellowfin tuna salad. All of which id recommend, especially the tuna. We enjoyed the draft beer selection with a combination of german and nc draft beers, but they also have plenty of bottled selections. Would definitely come here again. read more

Awesome craft brew tasting spot. They do have a full bar as well so do not limit them to beer. The food menu is over the top for a beer garden/bar in general. Wow. . All I can say .. I was surprised at how good everything was. We had the chicken wing appetizer. The wings look small because how they are cut and they are small. . But huge on flavor! The shrimp avocado wrap was delicious and the cubano sandwich is awesome. We chose the cucumber tomato salad as our side instead of fries and it was the best I've had. Went there this past weekend and they were really understaffed. Not the staffs fault but the one bartender making drinks was overwhelmed. Drinks and beers were good, but getting one required a long wait. I hope they get their staffing act together before warmer weather arrives with lots of people. read more

Went on a Wednesday evening. Got a nice, large table outside. (Was told to seat ourselves and someone would be over.) Good atmosphere...the Biergarten is sandy and has two sets of large swings that my kids enjoyed. The server was nice and polite. She remembered everything we ordered or later asked for and kept our waters filled without being asked. We ordered beer and mixed drinks - a Pain Killer and a Kentucky Mule, which were fantastic. I only gave the place three stars because of the food and the price. We started with a French fries appetizer that had steak and sauce on it which was great. My boys ordered burgers and seemed content. My daughter ordered a chicken quesadilla which was nothing to write home about. My husband and I ordered tacos - him fish and me chicken. They only come with two tacos and they were honestly pretty bland. Everything we ordered came with an option for a side of fries or onion strings. When she brought them out, every side of fries was a FULL basket. Having just had a French fry appetizer, the last thing we needed was four more HUGE baskets of fries. (I got the onion straws.) Needless to say, we hardly touched them and it felt like a waste. I do think it would have been good for the server to think of that when we ordered and I also think they should offer some kind of alternative. Finally, the cost seemed pretty high. Granted we are a family of five, but still...the final bill was over $100. For the type of food and the wasted sides, I wouldn't say that was totally worth it. I would go back again, perhaps without the kids for drinks and to try something else on the menu. read more

Good food but small portions and overpriced. The appetizers are $8-10 a piece and are tiny. We had bratwurst with onion strings, grilled fish tacos with chips and salsa, shrimp buger, the cure burger, pretzel appetizer and chicken wings appetizer. I asked for extra sauerkraut on my bratwurst and was charged extra for it. read more

The Idle Hour Biergarten has s great location near the beach. We enjoyed our first visit and are thrilled Atlantic Beach has some new venues. I know this will be a very popular spot. read more

We were really excited to try this place out-it was walking distance from our beach house, and has a great atmosphere. We'd heard great things, so decided to walk over for a drink and a quick late dinner. The outside atmosphere was perfect and we were greeted immediately by friendly staff who took our drink orders. After a good 30 minutes, we were still waiting for our drinks. When we went in to investigate, the waiter hadn't even put our drink orders in and had forgotten he'd even taken them-no one seemed too concerned. We didn't have the energy to find out how long food would take, and left empty handed, eating chips back at the beach house since our other food options had closed by then. Super disappointed by the experience, and definitely put a damper on an already short vacation-we would've spent our evening somewhere else if we had known. I really enjoy this place for lunch when in Atlantic Beach. The food is solid, ambience is great, and the beer selection is awesome. Service was great. Wait staff was attentive. Fried pickles. Must order. Thin slices but full of flavor. Our basket was overflowing and the two of us barely ate half bc there were so many. Ordered the shrimp tacos which were yummy but I'm not a fan of their tortillas. I think it was a corn tortilla but not 100% position. Disappointed in the ranch, as I'm pretty sure it is not made in house. However, I'm a ranch snob (and I'm aware of that) so others may not care. Would love to see this place make their own tortilla chips and ranch but otherwise, I enjoyed it. read more

This is the best Biergarten I have been to.. the server is knowledgeable and can give amazing recommendations.. I suggest trying the blackened shrimp tacos! they are to die for!! The atmosphere is very nice both inside and outside. The beer was excellent! We ordered the fish tacos and shrimp tacos. Again both were excellent. The pretzel appetizer was a mixed bag. The pretzels were just average. The mustard and cheese sauces were very good and helped make up for the pretzels lacking. The waitress in training and her instructor were uninformed on the beer and food at their own restaurant. They had to call over the bartender several times so we could get answers to basic questions like tell me about this beer on your menu. Sadly neither the trainer or trainee appeared to have much interest in what the bartender was telling us. The bartender was very nice, spent lot of time giving us info on the choices. He was so well informed and made up for the wait staff issues. I'd definitely go again. read more
