My favorite cloth store in NYC- I must go there every time in am in town simply wonderful

Where have you been all our lives. All this time in our city and only in the last year or so have we found this place - probably just as well that we have not as our bank account would have been severely tasered for a lot longer as we invariably leave holding a purchase. This is a supremely well curated store that carries Comme des Garcons, Dries, Anne Demeulemeester, and Junya among others. Their website does not do the selection in the store any justice - probably at least 60-70% larger - and you are better off visiting in person and placing yourself in the capable hands of the staff who will make sure you walk out significantly less Brooks Brothers/Jcrew-dorky than when you walked in. They will probably take umbrage with this, but we feel like the selection for the ladies has been more interesting - all the better, as the significant other should always be seen wearing beautiful things. read more

When I was a boy with a querulous mind and irresponsible fiscal habits (thanks Chase Manhattan credit!), I endured hours of transit time from upstate NY to spend weekends in the city. Call it my Wonder Years, with a healthy dose of cashmere, cum stains (sometimes ON the cashmere), and alcohol-induced purging. If boutique and Charivari were my favorite boutiques in the city. It's true, you never forget your first time. I bought my first Margiela piece at If Boutique. One of the first places stateside to carry Comme and Yohji. The collections here largely focus on deconstructed luxe; the pieces are sometimes outrageous, but always unimpeachable and well-made. If has a deserved reputation for unearthing the next "avant-garde" designer. Paul Harnden and personal fave Christian Peau's romantic and quasi-primitivist line are carried here. Really gorgeous pieces...the choices are lovely-I love how the store is laid out. Unfortunately if the sales people don't feel that you belong they will make sure they let you know by ignoring you. They will look you up and down and they will determine if they want to spend their precious time with you. The brands are very good and the styles are original there is nothing trendy about this store...it's like wearing art of your body. The prices are higher but the styles, quality and the brands allow it-and I am happy to pay for that... Unfortunately the sales staff are mediocre and for that I won't be back... read more

Hmm, not really what it used to be. Actually, maybe it is - for some reason I never took to this place just because it just doesn't have the stock, although quite admirable (and astounding) that's it been around so long, remember when it used to be on west Broadway. IF has the right labels but not the right selection, especially for such a limited selection. If the buy is so off, one would think to at least make up for it in selection. Have to agree with the other reviewer... Only when I happen to have my good sh$t on do they pay attention, which is pretty stupid because as a New Yorker, I'm not going to bother every time I step out the door. Actually I don't need or want your help as I quickly take in what u got, and in fact u should leave me alone because I've never found anything here that I can't live without, or even anything somewhat desirable. However, more discernment could make a difference because obviously I'm not going to send anyone over there. read more

This place is GORGEOUS. As someone who follows fashion and works in and around it, I have to say that I was blown away by the selection of clothing that's available. Margiela, Comme, Ann D., Rick Owens, Dries van Noten if I'm not mistaken I saw Wantanbe which very difficult to find as well. Oh god I was spinning! It's very hard for me to find my size (46) cause it usually goes first so I was expecting just to look around and drool. But I found a really cool Ann D. shirt, and on sale! A must go-to for shopping in SoHo. Very original and forward pieces there that are sure to get you compliments. read more

I love this store. Margiela Rick Owens Dries Van Noten Guidi Comme des Garcons And many cool European lines. This is an important place to stop in for an Avant Garde fashion lover. And of course, there is a stodgy Euro strangeness to the store, on course with other avant garde boutiques around the world. I like this somehow. The sales staff knows a great deal about fashion and are passionate about what they sell. I am surprised to see people saying below that they were rude. It is not a snuggle-fest in here, but they have always been professional, attentive and cool when I walk in here. Even the security guards and Bizarre owner give a friendly hello. read more

If I ever get rich, this is where I'll shop. But even on my meagre budget, I find a splurge-worthy garment or pair of shoes every so often that never ceases to become a cornerstone of my wardrobe. The staff is always super easy and knowledgable, a rare thing for shops in this area. I'm obsessed with Guidi shoes, and IF carries one of the best selections I've ever seen. Very cool store, one of the last great independent boutiques in NYC. They buy more avant-garde pieces, so it is not for everyone, but if its your style this store is the best. I believe the salesperson (Phillip, I think?), white guy, 50's is very nice and helpful. Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of fashion, just to see some of the most talented labels designs on display. read more

This place is p. chill. Not really into some of the labels they had there, but I guess they have to eat too. They had some rick mainline/cdg/kazyuki kumagai attachment stuff that was interesting, along with a few other smaller brands that I forgot the name of off the top of my head. Good sale selection. Nice to see something like this live in Soho still rather than just huge brands. I didn't have any problems with the sales staff. read more

Best edited selection of a few of my favorite brands (Rick Owens, Comme des Garcons, Ann Demeulemeester, etc). It's been around forever and stands the test of time. Glad this still exists in Soho when it feels like the once cool area is now filled with brands only the masses recognize. I always feel welcome in this gem of a store. I applaud the staff for politely dealing with the uniformed masses when they rudely balk at the pricing of quality goods. read more

A legendary store in the heart if Soho, If has the largest selection of goods from some of the best labels around the world. I love that what they source is unique, as many boutiques end up selling the same things. The staff is low key which I love and I appreciate that there's no blaring music, there's too many beautiful things to examine instead of getting distracted! read more

Snooty, snotty couldn't care less salesgirls - wake up call - the owner obviously doesn't resonate with the fact that money is the great equalizer and the condescending attitude of her staff stops me for one from spending any money in this store. Be sure to check out their basement sample sale, which occurs twice a year (in February and August). There, you will likely be assisted by a Steven Tyler-lipped gentleman who resembles a Nordic architect and women with saggy bosoms and exposed Margiela tags. read more

The impeccable selection is this boutique's only special draw--the prices are sky-high for longer into the season than is justified, the helpfulness of the staff is really hit or miss, and the sales are rare (twice a year). I often shop here for pieces that I know won't pop up elsewhere/on ebay/can be outsourced to a friend who lives in Japan and can find CDG for me for much cheaper. Not bad. It's been around forever; but, what they offer is really not unique or worthwhile. Most of it can be had in many other stores. The staff is rather boring as well, so I don't get the fuss of shopping here. They do have their basement sale which can make it worth a visit; but, nothing here worth paying full price for. read more

A classic in SOHO. And one of the last bastions of designer wear in the commercial neighborhood. It seems high level designers and shops are getting squeezed out one by one to make way for large box knock off retailers. The shop staff is as friendly as a designer boutique can be...just enough to make the atmosphere equal to the cost of the clothing. My only quibble is that I would like to see some newer designers featured there. It seems the buyers for the store are playing it safer than in past years. Thus, some of the lines are starting to look similar to each other. Consider this a 4.5 rating. read more

A great selection of clothing and I love that it's a long-standing independent clothing store! There's nothing 'trendy' here. It's all very original and therefore will always stand the test of time...no matter what you buy. I've bought two belts here that are my absolute favorites....one is black leather and the entire length is like the shape and width of one long piece of black licorice (but without the ridges). And then on such a skinny belt, is a full-size but thin, traditional silver buckle that's only connected to the ends of leather...but not really incorporated with the belt leather. So the buckle ends up being quite noticeable as part of such a skinny belt. The other belt is WILD, and I love that anytime I wear it, people do a double-take! From the front, what you see is a traditional brown leather belt...maybe about 2" thick. You see a traditional silver buckle that connects to the two brown leather tabs that connect the belt leather with the buckles. But after just about 4" of leather belt on each side (as seen from a front view), there's no more leather going around the sides or the back of my waist. So at first glance, it seems I am wearing a belt buckle with a bit of leather connected to it on either side...but that it seems to be 'floating' at the front of my waist. Where's the rest of the belt???!!! But alas, if you look more closely, you will see that where the leather ends on either side, it is then attached to clear FISHING WIRE, which then encircles the rest of my waist. So that's how the 'partial belt' stays on my waist. ;-) I love to wear this belt with a simple shift dress that really makes the belt the focal point. read more

Though IF had a very good selection, (Amadei, Harden, Guidi, Augusta, etc,) the customer service was lacking severely. My friends and I had just gotten off work, and went to see Amadei's work in person, specifically the construction. When were were browsing the racks, three or so sales associates were hovering around, as if to make sure we wouldn't steal anything. Whenever we would pick something up to examine, and put it down, the SA would walk over, move it an unnoticeable amount, and stay there. Very disappointed in how the sales associates treated potential customers. read more

This is a really cool store. One stop shopping for a great range of designers. Has a nice selection of Yamamoto and Commes des garcons. Good depth on other designers I had not heard of. Women's selection looked terrific! read more

I was so looking forward to shopping here. My husband and I were in town for the weekend and IF carries the lines I love but don't have access to where we live. What a disappointment! I've shopped in many beautiful and expensive boutiques around the world and I've never been treated so badly. We were the only customers in the shop, so it's not like the three sales clerks were busy--they just couldn't be bothered. I guess we didn't look to them like we would drop the serious dollars that would make it worthwhile to even say hello. And they didn't. Even when I asked a question, I did get a one-word answer but nothing else. No offer to help. Nothing. Even though there were many items in the store I might have been interested in, I will not support a business that treats people so poorly. We shopped in Hotoveli the day before and had the exact opposite experience. The sales staff are all amazing, helpful and passionate about what they are selling. This is the type of business I want to support. Looking forward to receiving the treasures they are shipping to us! I will never step foot in IF again, but look forward to a long relationship with Hotoveli. read more
