I'm sure the bands once plastered across my chest broadcasts *my* age. In my teens, I borrowed a Marilyn Manson tee a couple sizes too small from my sister & never gave it back. In my twenties, I wore out my Dropkick Murphys one & when I finally retired it, it had that perfect fit that only well-worn t-shirts get. For 10ish years my uniform was ripped jeans and band tees. Then, I took a break and became an adult. Now I realize i can be an adult also still wear band tees. This is where Ted's comes in. Ted's sells fine clothing, as you can tell by their name. He provides high quality band tees from those hard to find punk bands that don't exist anymore that you can wear and think about your youth. They sell metal tees and rock tees and honestly, pretty much everything a growing or grown punk rock kid needs. They don't break the bank either. Spending $40-$50 here is easy to do, but you're getting high quality merch. This isn't your hot topic shirt that will last you one mosh pit and then it's ripped to shreds and you'll never wear it again. Or maybe it is, it's been a good 14 years since I moshed. I don't know. With one ounce of originality, one ounce of personality and a lot of rock'n'roll, you get the main ingredients in the small New York store Ted's Fine Clothing. It's located in the very hip Lower East Side, on Orchard Street, were small vintage boutiques lays crowded among bars and art galleries. It was July, so The City that although never sleeps, was certainly a bit sleepy. It was hot, 90 degrees, I'm -a tourist and vintage lover- was looking for another store down the street. Probably looking like a typical tourist, with a map in my hands and a confused look to go with it, found myself in front of a small door. The name, Ted's Fine Clothing, does not in itself give away what kind of store it is, but the fabulous t-shirts surrounding the sign do. Now, with New York absolutely drowning in small t-shirts stores with the tired logo "I love New York", I was a bit skeptical. When the door opened and the parade of rock band-t-shirts appeared, I was blown away. Not only did they manage to fit in shirts of probably the worlds best music groups in a single room. The t-shirts were original in their way. The colors, the prints, they were very genuine. The owner, a hip dude with white long hair, was very polite. In front of the counter a video player was playing on the old TV (yes there are still people using those!), it was a punk rock concert, from the seventies. A homeless man walks in; he seems to know the owner, and starts to talk baseball. It's a warm feeling in here. For me, a music lover and a t-shirt enthusiast, it was like coming home. I immediately bought a t-shirt and a pin. I walked out with a smile on my face, after being on what felt like a small journey in time to another kind of New York City. Just a couple of blocks away, in East village, you find the place were Punk rock was born in the seventies. Ted offered to stay open a few minutes later if I was running late, which I thought was very kind. I found the shop, enjoyed browsing, and picked up a nice Sabbath shirt. Smallish store in the East Village selling shirts that take me back to ordering similar ones off the back of the NME. Pretty wide selection at under $30 a shirt, all in excellent nick. I ended up getting a few for my kids, haven't seen what I wanted anywhere. Staff are very friendly. read more

Bought my friend's newborn baby a few rock n' roll band onesies here and I fell in love with the place. How can you not when they have everything from a Misfits onesie to The Beatles?! I even picked up a vintage looking Motörhead tshirt for myself! The shirts are on the expensive side, but it's worth the price to support a small local gem like this one that unfortunately seem to be disappearing by the hour here in NYC. Charlie is such a warm and helpful fella and so welcoming. If I didn't have to be somewhere I could have stayed in there for hours looking at all the shirts, pins, and novelties. As a lifetime New Yorker for a few decades now and a big rock n' roll fan, I'm ashamed I had not been in this store until recently. Used to hit up all the tshirt stores in the West Village though those have sadly gone out, or their once massive selections have been shrunken down significantly. Can't wait to visit Ted's again. Ted's and Trash & Vaudeville are reasons why NYC is and always will be the best place to shop when it comes to rock n' roll! read more
