I'm not alternative myself, but I wanted to check out some local shops in the East Village. Trash & Vaudeville sells mainly punk, goth, and alternative clothes (think huge bell bottom pants with safety pins and chains). I was also impressed with their band shirts. Lots of Blondie, Bowie, The Clash, The Ramones, etc. Large downstairs selection of sale items and shoes. Staff were laid back, but made themselves available if I needed anything. I was reading how some well known punk bands used to shop here in the 70s and how they were one of the first to stock Doc Martens. A nice nostalgic walk down memory lane, with the LES and East Village used to be real PUNK. read more

No one goes here in search of cheap prices; we go in search of certain brands with the knowledge of what price range they fall in. I really enjoyed Trash and Vaudeville. It was really boss! Again, I came with friends because I would have never come on my own. The clothes in this store remind me of something I would find on the Dollskill and Nasty Gal sites or at Hot Topic or Torrid. My friends and I had such a great time trying on the clothes. My friend bought a skull white corset and a blue chained skirt. It was very out of my price range but she looked beautiful in it. Another friend tried on 2 white corsets and the other friend, a male one, tried on a lace corset and a lace elaborate coat. The outfit was an entire mood. I tried on 2 very cute and very short pink skirts, a lace pink tank top, and a black and pink teddy/short dress. As I said before, way out of my price range and out of my confidence level, so I left with nothing. The two women who run the shop were so nice and knowledgeable. Especially the young lady with short red Mohawk. Anytime we had a question, inquiry, or were even thinking of one of the two, she was on it. It was truly a wonderful time. read more

Worst retail experience of my life. Both employees were extremely rude to my partner and me the second we walked in. Both were making snide remarks to each other across the store about "customers like us," and we were the only two people in the store aside from them. One went as far as to say that they wanted to put their hand in our faces because they "couldn't deal with this today." We couldn't believe the level of disrespect and decided to leave because we didn't want to give the store our money. To pay as much as this store charges and get treated worse than you would at a McDonald's, is not worth it. The selection is decent if you like all of your pants with skulls on them and don't mind having them fall off of the hanger every time you try and pick a pair out. I was extremely disappointed because I had come a couple of years ago and had a great and very helpful experience. I don't know if they got new employees or if it was because we were not dressed as alternative as I was last time, but either way, this treatment was unacceptable. I've been wanting to go here since I was 14 and searched on Yahoo "where do punk people shop." For real. So I finally had some time to kill in NYC, and I decided to make my long-awaited visit. The pieces here are gorgeous on so many different levels. A lot of their clothing and accessories are of course going to be over the top, but I found a ton of them to actually be surprisingly wearable. I found a white leather biker jacket that I fell in love with immediately... it was $800, but it was destined to be mine. When I move to the city, I will be back. A lot of times. The best shop in New York City for the dark souls and vampires. The shop is located at 96 East 7th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue and it has been around since 1975. Wow, that's a long time ! It was in a different location and recently moved to this current location in the East Village in 2015. I also found out this store is where Blondie and the Ramones used to buy their cloths and the store was the first to stock on Doc Marten boots. I purchased a lot of things from this store because they have what I was looking for but also I wanted to support stores like this one that sells unique and interesting items. Sadly other shops similar to this all closed down through the years in different parts of the country. My father took me to Trash when it was still on Spring St. He had researched the old tour guide series from the late 70's "New York on $5 a Day" to find someplace cool to take me for my birthday. I still remember seeing a mannequin in the window wearing a leather jacket, fishnets and a pink tutu and walking inside in wonder. I strutted out with the iconic hot pink bag filled with clothes, feeling like I was the most avant garde and sophisticated teenager in the entire world. Every year on my birthday, he would take me to the St. Marks Place location for leather boots, then Manic Panic for hair dye and Parachute for new wave clothing. Afterwards we would eat perogis at one of the old Ukrainian restaurants in the area. It was extra special for me because my Dad is about the most conservative person ever, but he tolerated the 80's EV atmosphere one day a year for his daughter. He still talks about the trips we would take, and the borscht from that long gone corner restaurant (now a BBQ). After I went to college, this was still my first stop when I visited NYC and I would always make sure to grab fliers from the front to see who was playing. Jimmy was a fixture there for years, a friendly blond rocker who always knew what was going on and where. Today I was saddened to hear that he had passed away. Pour one out for Jimmy. I have fond memories of this store over several decades of my life, although I have yet to visit the new location. In my heart it will always be on St. Marks. read more

I went into this place just yesterday, an unseasonably cold Tuesday evening in May looking for a pair of footwear that makes as much of an impression as my giant knee high chain boots. Online shoe shopping is always a dubious affair, so I thought it was time to give this legendary spot a look. The staff were all welcoming and helpful, and it was nice to not be the most leather clad person in the room for once. The saleswoman (who I rudely didn't ask the name of) was immensely helpful, informative and allowed me to take my time to try out both shoes and walk about the store. Though I did pay above the online price; The experience of having someone help you through making an informed choice is well worth paying a few extra bucks... And it's always good to support a small business that does right by its customers. In the end I found a pair that I loved, a TUK creeper I had previously ordered online; but didn't fit right somehow. I would love to support a business like Trash & Vaudeville, because there are so few "old-school" places like this that sell cool punk-rock clothing, but I can't and here's why. First of all, their clothing is way too expensive. You can get this stuff on etsy for much less and it isn't even vintage. It's new t-shirts and pants with funky logos. The pants are almost $100 a piece for something not that special. (T-shirts were half-way reasonable at $25-30 I must say.) I guess Lower East Side rents lead to Lower East Side prices. Strike one. Strike two. This place is weirdly designed where you have to leave the store and go in through another entrance to see both parts. Odd. Strike three. While I was looking at some clothes, a woman comes in with a huge, scary dog who was barking quite loudly and it was OFF THE DAMN LEASH. Really? In a clothing store this is allowed? Where children might come in? And this was not a service dog. And the person wasn't even buying anything, just chatting with the receptionist. The person finally moved after I protested but I shouldn't have to fear for my life because I want a David Bowie t-shirt. I love rock t-shirts but this place has lost my business. I freaken love this store! I have been shopping here since my first trip to NYC in 1990 and haven't looked back! There is a fine selection of Tripp NYC, Lipservice, Fantasy UK shoes and various other brands. Yes, some of the fashions are better suited to a 90lb goth girl but they do carry a variety of sizes for most garments. I happily purchased a black denim Tripp motorcycle jacket and some kick-ass faux leopard fur goth boots, similar to ones I had in 1985! I felt like a wee goth lass again as soon I put them on! M got his T & V brand stretch jeans that the manager Jimmy helpfully suggested a smaller size.. and he was right! Some reviews state bad customer service - I have NEVER received bad service - I've even done mail-order over the years and they've given me a discount! I mean, this isn't the friggen Gap or J Crew! That's why we shop there! All the people working there were actually friendly and helpful to M and I. I didn't get any vibes, just cool people working there. If you go in expecting them to kiss your ass, well you may be disappointed and are probably annoying anyways! Oh yes, check the sale rack in the back - we got some great items marked down! When the trends change and hipsters are no longer dressing "Dark Pagan" or whatever the trend sites are calling it. This place will still be here. When Urban Outfitters over expands, goes bankrupt, and disappears. Trash and Vaudeville will still be here to provide you with subculture apparel from subculture brands. Not just skimming the surface of music inspired trends, but actually digging down into it and living it as a lifestyle. T&V has survived some of the best of it's time, like Religious Sex for example. And, they still can exist even in what is becoming Little Tokyo, surrounded by yummy eateries and Karaoke bars. Hopefully reminding people what St. Marks used to be and still keeping a small piece of that culture alive in NYC. As long as they continue to support small design houses and keep to their roots, I hope that they will maintain their client base. A staple in the East Village. I have been coming here since I was 16 years old (maybe younger). Definitely one of the coolest shops NYC has to offer. The shoe selection itself is beyond amazing. Yes, the prices are a little up there but the quality is well-worth the price. The one thing I hate is when pre-teens wander in here and wonder why it's not Hot Topic. Cool shop to score some quality vintage and punk gear but be prepared to pay! Along with Search & Destroy this is the other shop on St Marks Place to peruse the racks for vintage and unique clothing, punk and otherwise. As with that other store the racks and shelves are crammed full with all types of merchandise from leather jackets, to graphic t's, to footwear among others. Items range from brand new, gently used, to beaten up, to "ewwww, I don't even want that touching my skin". They do have a big selection of Doc Martins if the boot style is to your liking. Lots of footwear actually. Good amount of stuff here for the pseudo-punker-rocker to accessorize. Situated over two levels one can find vintage and used clothing on the bottom and newer brands on the top. When in here recently I saw some leather jackets I wanted but with the warm weather coming up I declined to buy. Check out their online store too as it seems to carry a lot along with an "items on sale" page. There are plenty of ways here to pull off the look you are aiming for whether it be goth, metal or punk. Love this store! My friend found an awesome leather jacket with white leather skeleton bones on the front and back, which he gets compliments on ALL THE TIME! I found a pair of Tripp pink checkered pants for $30 and back home the same ones were $100! We thought we were finished shopping until we went outside and realized there was a whole downstairs that we had missed and not budgeted for. And then it was game over because the room downstairs was a room full of SHOES! I felt like squealing like a pig I was so excited! I think I still have a picture on my camera phone. Needless to say we spent far too much money in this store. The staff were pretty funny and did not help my credit card at all, and only further encouraged my debt, which only means they were doing their job very well. I bought an awesome jacket by Tripp NYC for $134 plus tax, but when I got home, I found the same exact jacket in the same exact size for $80 on Tripp NYC's official website. I had no idea Trash & Vaudeville would mark up a jacket $54. And, of course, you can only return items for store credit. Buyer beware. Let's be honest: T&V is punk Disneyland, with all the high markups that the title implies. But, like Disneyland, it has a few redeeming features. Well, okay, one. Disneyland is cool because of that flying elephant Dumbo ride, and T&V is cool because of the incredible deals on sale shoes. Downstairs at T&V there is always a surprisingly great selection of last-of-their-kind shoes and boots. I scored my favorite sparkly red knee-high boots for just nine bucks here one lucky afternoon. I've been getting compliments on these things for almost five years now, and all for less than the cost of a weak cocktail at some stupid bar. So, snoot all you want at Trash and Vaudeville, but if you hit it on the right day you can get some of the best shoe deals in the city. read more

I used to pass Trash & Vaudville allll the time back inna day (back inna day being the mid 80s) when, every weekend, my homies and I would go to Sounds Records a few doors down. Anywho, we'd never gone in cos we knew it was out of our teen budget. Now that I can actually afford their stuff & I have a teen of my own...and I dunno if my (Greenwich) Village influenced style has rubbed off on her but the stuff that T&V sells is...well, it's where she's at right now, we decided to pop by. When you go up the steps to the store, there are two sides. One side sells socks, enamel pins, accessories, clothing from Tripp and Obey, etc. The other side sells tees, bags, hats and there's a lower level with shoes. I was pleasantly surprised by their vast selection of Doc Martens. I saw the Basquiat Docs and almost lost my mind! GORGEOUS!! Asked to try them on. Was given one boot...lol. In all my 50 years on this earth, I've never asked to try on shoes and was only given ONE shoe to try on, lmao! Maybe that's their store policy *shrugs* The Basquiat boots seem to be sold out everywhere so I was ecstatic to have found them in my size. However, the one boot thing...maaan, had I purchased those boots, which I almost did, every time I would've looked at them, the experience would've been sullied. I wouldn't be able to disassociate those coveted boots with being given one boot to try on. Being Black, I'm used to dealing with bullschitt when I shop and this was just more of that. What I do in such situations is let my money speak for me. I'll remain cool and polite, of course. No need to make a scene, lol. Came in to return a pair of shoes that did not fit after a store employee told me returns were accepted so long as I had the receipt. The manager looked at the product and deemed it 'unsellable' simply because the sole was no longer perfectly white, and the sticker was torn, all which happened from trying on the shoes and walking around inside my apartment. Even if I had worn them, their returns policy--which was never fully articulated until after I came to make a return--does not specify that they only accept unused merchandise. read more

I haven't been in New York in 12 years, and found out they had moved. The stores were smaller and much quieter than the originals. But true to their nature, The Tripp clothing line was there and easy to access. They did have a complete line of sizes. Like New York in general, the East Village has changed.
