I've been coming to IGS for years selling my jewelry. Today, I came to sell my silver jewelry and get a new silver chain for a pendant I have. And I don't know the man who "helped" me but I thought he was very rude and was very rushed. And that's incredibly frustrating when I drove 40 minutes to get there. He questioned if I wanted to sell my jewelry because he told me "it's not gonna be a lot are you sure?" When he gave me my receipt to fill out my personal info he threw the paper on the counter and pointed at the receipt pad and just walked away. I knew what he wanted me to do but still you don't act that way to a customer. And then I didn't even get to purchase a new chain because all of there silver trays were in complete disarray and all tangled and couldn't find what I wanted. The woman who helped me look through the silver chains was very kind, patient, and was lovely to chat with. read more

They did a wonderful job resizing my wedding rings especially my wedding band which was engraved. The resizing left the engraved initials untouched. I inherited my Mother's wedding rings and anniversary ring. They designed a beautiful cross using all of my mothers jewelry. It is truly a one of a kind piece and a favorite piece for me. They created another ring for me using other pieces of jewelry that I brought into the store-a custom ring from old favorites. IGS was great to work with, and I hope to revisit someday. We had visited a "hoity toity" and they were not able to produce a Rare Natural Alexandrite stone in the quality we were seeking. I have been to IGS 3 times: 1st time was over 10 years ago. They were able to get a diamond to my specifications and then make a custom ring. My wife still gets comments on that ring to this day. 10 years ago we got our wedding bands there. Just recently (last month) I got a a ring for our 10 year anniversary. I was able to both explain and show some pictures of what I wanted, and a few weeks later (I was not in a hurry) I had my custom ring for our anniversary. Ed is extremely knowledgeable about diamonds, gemstones and jewelry in general. There prices are very reasonable (especially considering the quality!) Two trips to IGS diamonds for two different yet similar purposes and we couldn't be more pleased. Last summer I customized an engagement ring for my then girlfriend. The craftsmanship and quality were superb! I took it with me from Vienna, VA to Vienna, Austria where I proposed to her at the Schonbrunn Palace. Brought a diamond ring in there yesterday, with a stone I intend to sell, only to ask them to take it out of its setting, so I could then send it on GIA for grading. Ended up spending almost an hour in the store getting "Ed"ucated (Ed is, I think, the founder, who told me he retired two years ago, but still comes in every day!) about the stone's unique qualities, its weight, clarity and color, options regarding the setting and the baguettes that are also part of the ring, etc. When Eddie, Ed's son, arrived, the education continued, with great advice from them on which report to get from GIA. They even sent the stone to GIA for me, saving me a lot of time and hassle. Ed Jr and Ed Sr were both awesome. The first time we went into IGS, Ed Jr was out. Only Ed Sr was there. Ed Jr took over the business from his dad a while back, so Ed Sr decided to give us a lesson in stones. He showed us all the dimensions, what makes a good stone versus a bad stone, where to get your most value, etc. It was great. He even drew us some pictures that I still have. Once I became an expert in diamonds, I started working with Ed Jr. He searched all over the country and must have shown me 20 different stones. Ed was patient with me as I was trying to get the biggest most beautiful stone for my dollars. And then finally, the most perfect cut right around the weight I was aiming for came along and at a great price. I would highly recommend IGS. They only deal with the best GIA certified diamonds. You won't find any of those shady certifications other local and chain jewelers try to push on you. I would especially recommend them if you are looking for something custom. They were completely straightforward and honest, took the time to fully explain the process, and didn't try to upsell him. In short, it was trust at a price that was cheaper than Blue Nile's (and certainly cheaper than the mall stores, etc.). I purchased my fiancee's engagement ring here about two months ago, and I was so impressed with the entire process. I was planning to purchase both the diamond and the setting online, since I didn't have a very high budget (less than $5k) and was certain no brick and mortar jeweler in the DMV area could accommodate me with a high quality stone. However, I contacted IGS on a whim since I knew they didn't run a large store or have a huge inventory, and the reviews online were stellar. Ed responded right away, asking what I was interested in. I had done a LOT of research and knew what I wanted, and within an hour or two he emailed me the GIA certificate of a stone that fit my parameters. I ran a cross-check against some of the larger online retailers (Blue Nile, James Allen, etc) for a diamond with the same specifications and confirmed I was getting a great price. I visited the store the following weekend to see the stone, and it was spectacular. Since the diamond was on the top end of my budget, Ed worked with me to design a simple setting that was both unique and affordable, and he even offered to ship it to me so I could avoid paying Virginia state sales tax, which saved me another small sum of money. Ed was knowledgable, direct, and honest, and once I met him, I never had any qualms about the rest of the process. Ed and his team began work on the ring, and it was finished within two weeks. In the meantime, I was a nervous wreck. We communicated frequently through email, and Ed was incredibly responsive and patient, usually responding to me within a few hours, sometimes even late at night. Even though I imagine I was spending quite a bit less than the average jewelry shopper in the area, he treated me like I was a customer who was spending tens of thousands of dollars. As I mentioned earlier, not only was I getting a wonderful deal, as well as the peace of mind from seeing the stone in person, but I was getting to patronize a wonderful local business, which is very important to me. After seeing the reviews they've obtained from the Washingtonian, I decided to give their website a look. The website was pretty basic in nature without having any real statistics on their diamonds. Regardless of the website's flaws, I decided to get a quote from them. Shortly after submitting the quote, I had a response. I was very happy with their speedy response. However, this happiness was short lived. After the initial email, all of the following emails were extremely unprofessional (lacking proper sentence structure). He became very "pushy" with his sales tactics. Not satisfied with our email exchange, he decided to call me. I told him that I'd like to look around at other jewelers in town before making a decision since his price was quite a bit more than other shops. I also told him that I would get back to him if I was interested. The conversation ended. After a few days he emailed me back, in the same unprofessional manner, asking if I was still interested in doing business with him. Annoyed with his persistence, I told him that I picked another place to purchase my diamond. He then tried to obtain information about the diamond I "purchased". He also wanted to know what the problem was with his diamond. I then told him that he was more expensive and that his sale tactics were way too aggressive. What was his next response you ask? I was completely shocked when his next email asked about the size and GIA number of the diamond. I stopped responding after that. After my experience, I would not suggest this jeweler to anyone. Prices are definitely cheaper at other local venues with the same certification agency. read more

On a recent trip to DC, my husband and I decided it might be a good place to shop for diamonds. We found IGS on the internet and are very happy we did. The salesman (Ed) stayed within the budget we had and showed us 3 different sized diamonds to choose from. He was very knowledgeable and educated us to help with our decision making. I then had the diamond mounted in a setting I choose and Ed shipped it to West Virginia for me so that we didn't have to pay sales tax - an added bonus!
