Our breakfast one morning was breakfast sandwiches thoughtfully packed to go for the West Point football game and the next morning we joined others in the antique dining room and filled up on homemade muffins, fresh fruit bowls and omelettes. So scrumptious! The B&B is quaint and beautifully landscaped all around, plus the vineyard. The views of the Hudson River from the stone-terraced back patio is just breathtaking! A perfect place to relax and read a book or have a conversation with other friendly visitors. A complimentary goodie bag was a nice welcome, and included earplugs. Very clean, easy check in and out, walkable to a variety of restaurants and beautiful grounds. Like the beautiful home, she was charming and delightful. She even gave us great insight about the Dia Beacon. But two things really elevate staying here: One is the incredible views and access to the trails and lake, etc. But second is the genuinely friendly and helpful customer service from folks at the front desk and elsewhere. Lots of young (to me!) people employed, and they are unfailingly polite and consistently go out of their way to help you. Reservations are also easy to make, and the Inn is flexible with regard to canceling or changing details. Really just an inviting and well run place.

The tourism, real estate and media industries and the government sell a narrative of trees, lakes and hiking. All this can be yours for the low price of $3 million for a second home. Or you can stay in a hotel and enjoy a convenient 25-minute trip from a highway. The actual locations you're trying to visit tend not to have hotels. I'm not a zoning expert but I have seen how impossible it is to find train-friendly hotels. The Holiday Inn Express is reachable from the Peekskill train station. While some maps will indicate a 1-mile walk on a some unappealing looking roads, but the riverfront waterway will get you there. Let's call a 17-minute walk. Travel light! There's outstanding waterfront scenery at Charles Point Park. There appear to be two restaurants walkable from the hotel. I walked to the village of Peekskill but normal people won't want to do that (not a bad Uber ride presumably). On more hotel-specific factors, the shower pressure was excellent, the room was far bigger than usual and all the workers were friendly and helpful.
