Small restaurant on Shattuck in Berkeley. It shares about a block long space with other dining places. There's outdoor seating. We sat inside as it was a little windy and found it to be quite cozy and chill. They weren't too busy. Our nice server promptly came with waters, and after a few minutes we ordered our food selections. We ordered two two-item bento boxes and other family ordered sushi rolls, skewers, agedashi tofu. We were hungry that I forgot to take pictures of some of the items! Food was delicious, staff was nice and love the ambiance. Ample street parking nearby.

Tofu Avocado Salad

We were visiting from SoCal and stopped in for lunch. There was something for everyone. My son loved the salmon rolls and salmon sushi. My daughter said her udon was really delicious and I enjoyed the tofu & avocado salad. The service was really nice, and they were very understanding of an antsy little boy causing trouble ;) they even gave us some complimentary strawberry mochi dessert. Very nice!

Great food, clean place and great service. We ordered karage and ramen to try the basic Japanese food and it was good. Also try a tofu avocado salad. Overall a great place

Chirashi Don and assorted skewers!

Ijo Izakaya was great! A lovely meal with my kid and we had the chirashi don, assorted skewers, and the miso cod, which was particularly tasty. The service was swift and attentive

Soft Softshell Crab Roll

Went to check out Ijo Izakaya on Monday evening during the happy hour. We got yellowtail carpaccio (fave!), aburi tuna nigiri (2nd fave), kushiyaki set, soft shell crab roll, & aburi salmon roll for 2 ppl. Portion is good & ingredients feels pretty fresh. A good neighborhood izakaya for date night

Updating my review to add updated menus and reviews for new dishes I tried! The poke salad was great - refreshing and tasty. I would reorder this one, it balances well with other dishes. The Katsu Don was also really good. Katsu was tender and the dish was well seasoned. Substantial portions too, which I always appreciate! One thing is they no longer give free mochi at the end anymore :( its ok though, still a great spot and I will be returning!

Ijo Izakaya is definitely a place you shouldn't underestimate. TONS of menu items and wide variety of options. Izakaya's are my favorite spots for getting many different Japanese bites. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and was sat immediately. Smaller restaurant but their food is large in flavor/quality. Staff was welcoming and always checking in on me. I ordered: Yellowtail Carpaccio Ikura (salmon roe) Eel Salmon Sashimi Dynamite Roll Everything was very fresh and good size portions. Ikura (salmon roe) can be very fishy but it was not fishy at all and I loved it. The eel was almost butter like and melted in my mouth. Really great quality all around and would highly recommend stopping by.

this place is a small place for japanese food. To be honest, it didn't give me a very authentic japanese food feeling, especially when eating. What we got: lion king roll (4/5): it was pretty good but very expensive for not that much of a roll. the flavors were good and there was fish on too and the salmon on top was VERY big, but also the california roll in the inside wasn't that impressive nabeyaki udon (4/5): pretty solid udon, on the sweeter side but it was basically just napa cabbage, a few pieces of chicken, and udon. I personally just felt meh, ESPECIALLY because nabeyaki udon shoukd be served in a donabe or an iron pot and it was just in a bowl. kimchi cream udon (4/5): not very flavorful to be honest and just felt very creamy. it looked really good and the noodles were a good texture, but lacked kimchi or gochujang flavor tonkotsu udon (4/5): it was okay. the noodles were a bit softer than my liking, but also thinner than usual ramen noodles. it was okay and the soup wasn't very special. katsu don (4/5): it was good but just like a normal katsu don, nothing special.

Not sure if there's been a recent change if ownership, but the restaurant was dead at lunch hour, we were the only ones there. The food was nothing special, price is ok, menu also changed from what's being posted. We had gyudon, geso-kara, yaki-corn (best out of 4 items tried, but also like other postings said, they forgot all the toppings, just got grilled corn), and shishito peppers (it wasn't just grilled, was tossed with garlic). Restaurant is Chinese owned, and the server did not speak ANY English. She finally went and got the manager to come take the orders. Overall, it's a ok restaurant if you dont have any other options, but we went there seeing the good reviews, not at all what the reviews states. So we were a little disappointed.

My favorites were the crab croquettes, chicken heart, one of the marinated skewers (I can't recall the name of it), gizzards, and the squid ink fried rice. I'm definitely curious to try the bacon-wrapped mochi at a future visit. The only downfall was that the kitchen was extremely backed up during our visit. It took well over what felt like 20-30 minutes from our 1st order to our 2nd Chef's Choice dish. That negatively impacted our experience, but it happens. I'd like to try Ippuku again and hope there will be less of a delay. Our server was nice & attentive, came around a few times to refill our water.

We discovered this fun little Izakaya (Japanese social eatery) when coming into town for the…read moreLadytron show at the UC Theater on busy Saturday night on University Avenue and we are glad that we decided to give it a try. It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

I could eat 2 of these with a bowl of rice and it would be a hearty meal! + Chicken karaage was solid--crispy, good portion, and a nice appetizer. It's basically a Japanese version of chicken strips that is way better than nuggets. + Salmon sashimi for the kids never disappoints. ~ Chirashi bowl was fresh and filling, though standard compared to other spots. There was a lot of rice which if we knew that we probably would've skipped the extra bowl I ordered to eat with my lamb chops. For the somewhat premium pricing, I wish they provided fresh chopped wasabi. ~ Stuffed mushroom skewer was just okay--tasty but nothing special. I guess for mushrooms it does taste kinda like a chicken meatball which could be a good thing. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + Attentive and thoughtful service, especially accommodating a broken foot. They let my family wait at the bar instead of standing. + Ambiance is that classic Japanese vibe, busy but comfortable. Maybe not high-end, but definitely a place that feels special--especially now that we can afford it!
