We each got a handroll set and it was enough with the 4 rolls along with an appetizer for 3 of us to feel full. The SHUNGIKU KAKIAGE appetizer was delicious. Very nice with light batter and flavor. We enjoyed this a lot. Each roll was fresh and had a good amount of meat in it. The home made soy sauce was also delicious and had very interesting umami flavor. Our waitress was friendly and it wasn't very busy but for some reason she didn't notice to fill our water jug for a while. She was very good at clearing dishes. HOLY COW the service at this place is so slow. It took about 2.5 hours for my group of 4 to get an average about 5 handrolls per person. If you are training to have patience, eat slow, and have no other plans for the day, this is the perfect restaurant for you. I must say, the handrolls are delicious and the sauce flavors are paired well with each protein, but the insanely long waiting time just made me forget whatever flavortown I just experienced. A few months back, my boyfriend and I had gone to the Oakland location during restaurant week and that entire experience was a 10/10. After a hike in Berkeley, we saw we were close to this Albany location so we popped in at 2:30pm (they closed at 3pm). Got seated immediately. It was bigger than the Oakland location and (to my liking) more calm/quiet (though that could have been bc we were there at an off hour instead of prime dinner time, but nonetheless it was very much enjoyed). Similar to the Oakland location, they walk handrolls out one at a time. I don't know if they were short on staff because of the off hour, but every roll we had, the seaweed was soggy/not crisp. Unsure if it was not fresh OR if it was just sitting in the kitchen, and not the biggest deal, but I definitely preferred the seaweed at the Oakland location. That said the fish was good and the rice was well seasoned. I do think if I have a craving for handrolls, I'll prob go to the Oakland location. read more

My wife and I went here for a date night on a weeknight and as she put it we "loved it and can't wait to go back". If you aren't sure what to order they make it easy with an omaka-set preselected set of hand rolls. The overall experience is very nice as the dining experience is not rushed and your hand rolls are served one-by-one. We started with the Shungiku Kakiage vegetable tempura. My wife does not normally enjoy mushrooms but we devoured every bit of this appetizer. I opted for the Yonsei omaka-set since I'm not as big a fan of crab or salmon. The five hand rolls was the right amount, with my favorite being the black cod and truffle butter roll - so rich and decadent. My wife loved the OG omaka-set, especially the spicy tuna roll with tempura crunch that was not overly-spicy. I appreciated the dropper for the soy sauce to easily apply to the roll without risking pouring too much. We really enjoyed their cocktail menu as well, I liked the combination of flavors of The Hidden Fortress and the mouthwatering list of whiskeys. On the night we went they were out of the High Roller Martini. I'd come back for dinner again or even just drinks so I can try more of their whiskeys. read more

I can confidently say this is my favorite place for sushi and especially handrolls. I always get so excited to dine here especially since it is a treat and I barely hold back. I see a lot of people ordering maybe 3-4 handrolls and sharing appetizers but I mainly focus on the handrolls. These handrolls are on average 2-3 bites for me, 2 would be a big bite. There is no discount if you order from a set so order the sets only if you truly want every item in the list. If you come for lunch, take a look at their lunch sets because it comes out to only a couple dollars more and you get cucumber and edamame as an appetizer which is enough to share amongst two people. I love that they make the sushi rice vinegary here. I enjoy most of the items that I normally would like, there isn't a bad one except sometimes the black garlic aioli on the seared albacore tastes a bit fatty to me. Otherwise everything I order from my pictures are always fresh and good. One thing I noticed for the snow crab and chives is that they do not use mayo here compared to their Oakland location. I loved the ocean trout I had in early May and sad to see it gone by the end of May, it was sweet and fresh. Hope it comes back soon, @manager, let me know! lol thanks P.S. I do have a suggestion about the timing that food comes out, one time I was there for lunch and our table specifically had large gaps between the rolls coming out. I didn't get a chance to take a photo of the interior but the ambiance was very nice and perfect for a date or a nice meal with friends. It came out to roughly $40-50 a person post tax which was honestly really affordable. My favorite hand roll was the yellow tail and the ahi tuna. The first quality was amazing and honestly the portion size was surprisingly enough, with 5 hand rolls leaving me extremely satisfied. We were seated within mins of arriving. Our waiter was fairly attentive, refilled our waters quickly, took our order when we were ready and explained each roll as it arrived. I will be dreaming about Yonsei Handrolls for quite some time after a pretty extraordinary meal here. Would love to return for dinner to experience the cocktail menu also, but let's dive into lunch. Check hours before heading over because they may vary between weekday/night and weekends, but weekday they open at 11:30a. While in the area, we were so hungry and realized we had never tried Yonsei before. Also fyi there is a wine bar that opens at 12p called Best Friends next door. While parking on San Pablo can be a bit challenging, we found street parking near the front of the building, so we took this as a great sign. The vibes inside were high ~ loved the art and immaculate space. Also love the bar area and sleek but cozy environment. They have the coolest lunch menu. Being new to handrolls, we went with the DIY Lunch Set that included 3 different fish: yellowtail, spicy tuna, and salmon with rice and the seaweed wrappers. What an excellent and incredibly fun way to have a 'first foodie moment' with others. (See pics and videos) We also ordered the sashimi salad and tenpura (Shungiku Kakiage) to start, with a few 'single' handrolls for variety as well. I ordered an Avocado single handroll, and it was perfection. Everything we tried was incredibly thoughtful, intentional, light, fresh, and just simply delicious. Came on a Sunday lunch and was seated right away. Indoors was a nice ambiance - it felt very clean and modern. We ordered the Temaki Gochisou lunch set, which was 3 hand rolls with sides. The sides were edamame and a seaweed cucumber salad. We did a late lunch so we were very hungry. The rolls didn't come out until after we finished the sides. The 3 rolls came with: - seared albacore, black garlic aioli - black cod & truffle butter: my fav out of the set! - saba misoyaki, myoga ginger The rolls were all delicious but we were still hungry so we added on a snow crab & chives and a salmon belly, truffle salt, yuzu to share. They were both good but the salmon belly felt a bit short. It didn't feel like a premium cut and felt like just regular salmon. One suggestion is to provide some warm hand towels. It felt odd to me that a handroll place didn't have any hand wipes to start off the meal or at the end. I do really like the food here, but it's now been 3 times that the staff have just been super rude so it's hard to want to go back. Today I went in with my mom, and we were told to sit at a 2-top right next to the bathroom. We asked if we could sit at any of the other 5 open tables, and were told no because there were reservations. I find it hard to believe that 5 tables were reserved for 1 pm on a Wednesday, but even if that's the case, she could have been nice about it instead of snappy and dismissive. This also happened to my mom another time, where they only let her and a friend sit at the 2-top by the bathroom, then proceeded to let another group of 2 who walked in sit at one of the nice tables near the window. They seem to severely under-staff this restaurant, so even the more friendly/professional servers often seem completely overwhelmed and it can take a long time to be seated. read more

The "newer" of the two locations. The Albany location opened up mid last year, I believe. I used to go to the Oakland location quite often. (Which I also love!) I really enjoy this Handroll spot. I have regular rolls I order lol today I got the lunch special they offer. They have two to choose from. I got the more expensive one ($27) Just cause it comes with the comes with black cod which is one of the regulars I order. The special comes with three rolls, a side of edamame, a cucumber salad and a green salad. All of which are also delicious. Edamame is steamed and salted. Salads are not over dressed and a perfect addition to the rolls. This particular special came with the seared albacore Handroll, the black cod, and the saba misoyaki. It was my first time having the saba roll. It was good. Not one of my favorites but definitely still a good one. 3 rolls is never enough for me, so I added 2 of the regulars I like: the negihama and the salmon belly. Cannot go wrong with those! The albacore Handroll is slightly seared and comes with this black garlic aioli. So good! I could eat a ton of those. The black cod is perfectly cooked. The truffle butter goes so well with it. It's definitely one of my top rolls. The negihama is lighter and you can really taste the fish. I just love the way they prepare it. I always order it when I come. Gotta give that one a try when you visit. And last but not least, the salmon belly. Perfect piece of fish. They have a truffle salt and a yuzu finish. Anything with yuzu, I love. We came a little earlier than dinner rush, so we didn't have any wait. The interior is modern and clean. Service is super quick and welcoming as well. We shared the duck tataki appetizer and I tried the crab, cod, salmon belly, and toro handrolls. The duck tataki was pretty good! Doesn't come with a lot of duck pieces, but the duck itself was yummy. Rolls were overall good. I was disappointed by the toro and crab rolls though. Toro is a premium ingredient so I understand why it's more expensive. But the toppings they chose didn't do much for the toro. The fish quality was good, but the overall roll was just fine. The crab roll was very mayo heavy and not much crab flavor. My standout was definitely the black cod. It was super buttery, juicy, tender, and the truffle went perfectly with it. I thought at least I'd taste the flavors, but not at all. Do not recommend getting the Omaka-sets because you don't save any $$$ from ordering the Omaka-set, it is the same price as individually ordering the same items. Just order each handroll that you want to try, unless the Omaka-set has all the handrolls you wanted. The handrool I wanted to try the MOST was the Toro & caviar handroll, but they ran out of caviar and it was only lunch time, around noon! Very sad I didn't get to try it. I really enjoyed all the handrolls I ordered, but I highly recommend the Black cod & truffle butter handroll. Cod was so tender and buttery with truffle butter on top! Hit up Yonsei Handroll before my half marathon and honestly... if I run a PR, I'm giving full credit to these rolls. Every single one came out looking like a tiny work of art -- glossy nori, warm rice, and toppings so fresh they practically sparkled. The baller set? Worth every penny. We came for lunch today - would recommend making a reservation in advance. Ambiance was modern, bright. I'm sure it's more intimate at night. Playlist was on point (and definitely passed the vibe check!) Originally, based on service, I wanted to rate a 3/5. We were mindful that there were only 2-3 servers, and were doing the best they could with the circumstances. Though, we were disappointed for how long we had to wait for various items (drinks, apps, and the hand rolls in general). We noticed that other people sat after us got their food ahead of time and we waited quite an extended period of time. Though, this had nothing to do with the servers themselves. They did an amazing job - nice, patient and respectful (and aware we were waiting a long time). They ended up comping our drinks for the wait which was thoughtful. But, for the best part. The food was amazing! Flavor profiles were simple, but so so yummy. If you're new to hand rolls, their preset omakase is a good way to start. Aside from the presets (we got the OG and the $20 lunch set) we'd definitely recommend the salmon belly, saba miso yaki. This place is amazing!! I feel like I was transferred into another world with the decorations and lighting. It's a nice vibe and date night spot. I came here on a Thursday night and it was a bit crowded. I was able to be seated at the bar and was able to make conversation with the bartenders. Naoki was really nice and recommended several rolls to try for my first time, and recommended what drinks to pair with them. I took his recommendation and tried their lychee drink with the carpaccio and the seared albacore handroll. These all paired together was very satisfying. The fish was so tender and melted in my mouth. They have good prices if you want to try more than 1 roll. You can select about 5 for a good price and mix and match. They are extremely flexible! We started with some appetizers, including the hamachi carpaccio and the agedashi tofu. The carpaccio was absolutely delicious, but the tofu was lacking in flavor and not fried well. For handrolls, we ordered the Yonsei omakase set. Some handrolls were really good, some were mid, and one was just awful. The octopus handroll had the texture of rubber and was difficult to chew. Made reservations for a table of two at 8:30 pm on a Sunday through Resy. We came in early around 8:20, and as soon as we walked in, we were "greeted" by one of the servers, and the first thing he said was that he was going to be doing last call "sooner rather than later." He wouldn't give us a specific time of when that would be but really emphasized that we needed to hurry and order right as we sat down, so we ended up ordering right away. This was despite the fact that there was an entire hour before they closed. When we asked the server what time they closed so we could make sure we could eat and leave well before then he told us the restaurant closes around "9-9:15 depending on the night". This was a weird remark because on Yelp, it says this place closes at 9:30 on Sundays. Despite our experience starting off to a not-so-great and rude start, we really kept our hopes up that the food would make up for that. We ordered the $36 OG and $52 Yonsei set. Each roll came out in pairs of two with good timing of when we finished. However, we noticed that the seaweed got progressively soggier as each new piece was brought out to us. Therefore, we were thinking that they had our rolls all made in advance and only brought them out to us when they saw we were finished with what was on the table. A good hand roll preserves the crunch of the seaweed wrap. This was a pretty bad shortcoming that affected the texture of the hand rolls because each time we took a bite, we had to pull it instead of getting a nice, crisp crunch. Also, the server didn't ask if we needed soy sauce, so we had to grab it from another table. In addition, we weren't a fan of the octopus because it seemed like it was overcooked and therefore overly chewy. The snow crab hand roll tasted like a crab sandwich wrapped in soggy seaweed. The server had no intention of actually providing any customer service whatsoever. They didn't check up on us even once, ask how our day was going, ask how our meal was, or ask whether or not we liked the few hand rolls we evidently didn't finish. On top of all of this, it was pretty funny that they charged us two dollars for the side of pickled wasabi when they gave us these tiny portions, which probably cumulatively came out to half a tablespoon (weird that they would be so skimpy with these sides if they were charging us for it.) On a positive note, we could tell the fish was fresh, and we liked the concept of the soy sauce being in a pipette bottle. Also, we did really enjoy the black cod hand roll. Overall, this place is a decent, at most, spot for Japanese-style hand rolls. To be honest, I've had way better elsewhere, and this place didn't strike me as anything unique other than their customer service, or lack there of and fresh fish. If there are other hand roll spots in the area, they probably offer a better experience than this place because their service doesn't even meet bare minimum standards (I've been a server for 5+ years). Be sure to come more than an hour and 10 minutes in advance if you have to eat here, unless you want to be treated like a burden and rushed to eat. P.S. The service was flawless. Waiter greeted us, got us seated and took our orders when we were ready without making us feel rushed. We got the OG Omakase since it was our first time here with the addition of the salmon belly roll. For most of the hand rolls, the fish had nice tender texture with subtle sweetness. The rice, I feel, would be more impactful with the fish if it had some vinegar but I understand that it may not appeal to everyone's tastes. The best bites I'd say were the salmon belly and soy cured tuna. Runner up is the sashimi salad and snow crab roll, but I feel the mayonnaise is a little overpowering and I couldn't taste much of the natural crab's sweetness. I wouldn't recommend getting the duck tataki as it just made me feel a but uncomfortable. Maybe I'm too used to eating fully cooked duck, but the texture and taste of pure duck was rather unsettling. When I read seared duck on the menu, I thought it would be seared and fully cooked. Maybe they would have seared it more thoroughly if I asked, but I didn't want to be a bother since they were close to their lunch break when it arrived. Overall I'd definitely recommend and would come back for more of what I know is good. We came here to celebrate our anniversary! My boyfriend booked a reservation on Resy (for the Amex credit) and it was a smooth process. They were able to accommodate us moving our reservation a bit later due to traffic. The menu is pretty straight forward. We got the yonsei omakaset. Each hand roll was delicious! The seared albacore and toro was my favorite. We also upgraded to get the salmon belly and it was definitely worth it. Came here for dinner. Cute little spot in Albany. Never had a hand roll before and not really a raw fish kind of person but I was able to find some menu items I enjoyed including cucumber and miso soup. My sister tried the Omaka-set with 6 hand rolls and I enjoyed primarily the veggie hand rolls. The cocktails were awesome! Service is quick and friendly. We had made a reservation on the early side. This place was absolutely amazing, all the rolls were so good! & btw 6-7 rolls is definitely enough. It's on Solano so it's barely parking, so you may have to search a bit. The quality of the fish was extravagant. I will definitely be back! read more

Good service, good food, yummy drink, lovely atmosphere and reasonable pricing. Went here with some friend after work to catch up and we all ended up loving the place. We all did the OG Omakase sets and swapped in a premium rolls for one roll in each of our sets. They also have interesting soy sauce dispensers that come in a glass dropper- super cute and felt like I was doing a science project lol. The rolls come out one by one after you finish each one so if you're starving and want all your food at once, this might bother you. I'd come back here again. read more

Really great new spot in Albany. We went because of the 100.00 resey credit from AMX. The hand rolls are all interesting and different. My SO got the 2nd teir omakase with the plus one. It was a little pricey but very delicious. I got a couple of hand rolls and we got two appetizers. The hamachi collar was very good and the fried mushrooms were very filling. read more

Yonsei handrolls is a refine twist to a handroll bar which is a nice addition to the Albany area. The nori on all the handrolls were crisp and the rice was perfectly seasoned. The omakasets are nice if you want the menu decided for you but I would recommend choosing what you want. The set doesn't actually give you a discount pricing for ordering a preset menu. Our favorites were the salmon belly, black cod & truffle butter, scallop. The handrolls were tasty but the price is a bit steep. The cocktails sounded very delicious but it was a bit underwhelming. The high roller martini listed sushi rice, shiso, nori, pickled ginger and shoyu. The flavors sounded so interesting but when we got the drink there was no hint of any of the listed ingredients except for the big piece of pickled ginger (which is the same ginger that comes with the handrolls..). The sailor by moonlight was better though. Good restaurant for a date night or special occasion. read more

Yum! What a great addition to the neighborhood! The handrolls aren't huge, but they are fairly hefty. I decided to only order three, and that was the right number for me. I ordered the spicy tuna, black cod and truffle butter and the special fatty tuna handroll (which was pricey....and was very delicious). It's a little awkward if you order a different number of handrolls as other people you're dining, it throws off how they serve the handrolls (as they generally synchronize the delivery). When I went, I had a reservation which was a good call because the restaurant was packed...on a Sunday night! I can't wait to go back for the lunch special sometime! read more
