Ikea is just awful. The novelty has worn off. Decent employees have been replaced with Wal-Mart esqe workers. Aside from the decked out displays, the store is in the same condition as Wal Mart complete with smelly bathrooms. Store maps and pencils usually not stocked. Bins containing merchandise in disarray with trash mixed in. Absurd return policy. Slow cashiers. Can take an hour to be served by customer service. Chaotic . A maze to get through. Nothing is easy to get to. To use a wheel chair.... You have to leave a "drivers license". Seriously?? They have everything else.. Maybe I can buy you a clue? We asked where the bedroom items where and they sent us upstairs to the showroom. Wasted our time following the stupid arrows and when we went to look for the item, not there! Turns out we should have been on the FIRST floor, not the 2nd. Then, the carts...a person in our group needed a cart to lean on due to bad back, it just made it worst!! They slide all over the place and not a normal cart. Then when we found the bedroom textile area, do you think they had the size we needed? NO...they were out of basically ALL King sizes. And once we found a pattern we did like and were ok with, do you think we could just go straight to a check out?? Hell no we couldn't!! We had to walk and wind around the WHOLE freaking store. We ended up finding a "Staff Entrance Only" which happen to lead right to the doors to leave. We left. Worst shopping store ever due to carts, rowdy kids, and store layout/design. read more

I have shopped at IKEA several times in the past and thought it was just OK. My last purchase was a $300 dresser. I purchased it at the end of December when I was 8 months pregnant. There was no way I could carry a 100lb set of boxes up to my second floor, so I needed to wait until after my son was born. I finally got around to putting this dresser together, but at step 2 the piece of the dresser I needed was missing. I went through the pieces and I am missing at least 8 pieces of the dresser. I called IKEA and since it has been more than 3 months there is nothing they can do. Now I have a $300 pile of wood in my upstairs bedroom. I will never go to IKEA again and I will tell everyone I know to never shop there. This dresser was a huge expense for me. I can't afford to lose $300. I basically threw money away. It doesn't matter that I called them the instant I found I was missing pieces. Never again. I was going to go to IKEA to buy flooring and bedroom furniture for my sons in the near future. LOVE IKEA. This place has the best restaurant for swedish meatballs! I know it's just probably frozen and heated up, but the combo of meatballs, gravy, mashed potatoes, and lingonberries is just great. We like to come here on weekdays because it's not so much of a cluster. We have gone on many Saturdays and it's soooo busy. One crappy thing is the website says something is in stock at the store and then you go there that same day within a few hours and it's not... We are going to call ahead of time if we are looking for a specific piece of furniture to save ourselves the trip (one of the guys on the floor said they get those calls a lot and it's okay to call ahead of time). Some of the furniture or items seem cheaply made, but with a little common sense you can walk out of IKEA with cheap but quality items. Plus those huge bags you buy at the end to put your items in are like 59 cents and totally nice to use on other shopping trips to the grocery store. You could easily spend a whole afternoon in IKEA and come out well fed and with tons of new items for way less than you'd spend elsewhere. read more

Who the heck designed this place? It's a huge maze that is purposely designed so it is nearly impossible for you to find your way out. I went in to find a picture frame and I ended up walking the entire store, both floors. The store is intentionally laid out like a maze so customers will see all of their products before heading to the check out lanes. It would be unfortunate if there's an emergency inside the building- no one would be able to locate the exits. read more

I bought a Nyvoll king size bed here in 2013. In 2017, someone sat down on the bed and the footboard snapped in half. Thank God no kids were crawling under it at the time because they could have been injured or killed. When I brought in the broken footboard for replacement or store credit, both an IKEA staff member and a manager told me that the model was discontinued and that it wasn't under warranty anyway so nothing could be done. I tried to appeal to their common sense and decency by explaining that a piece of furniture should not snap in half under any circumstances. In response, the manager actually said, "this is made out of particle board not solid wood." Translation: "don't you know we here at IKEA sell cheap defective lightly stylized furniture that we expect to snap in half after a few years?!" The people at the store are nice, but they over estimate how easy assembly is. IKEA phone support is lame, and the screws are cheap....often strip with a cordless skrewdriver, and the instructions are not clear, and the assembly is enough to make you go in sane....there is nothing simple about it.....watch out....if you like the furniture pay extra and have them assemble it.....assembling any IKEA item is the worst experience I have ever had! read more

First you must start upstairs and their are no carts until you reach about the middle of the absurd labyrinth, then they are almost unobtainable and stashed in a corner. Next all and I mean all, of the carts dogtrot. It is ridiculously difficulty to steer the damn things. They spin around and put a huge amount of pressure on your lower back. When looking for assistance, don't. I found 2, count them 2 people on the sales floor. They were uninformed. Finally as I reached the checkout area I wanted to go back upstairs. Hah! As I was told by an extremely rude cashier that I couldn't go through there. After 4 attempts to get his attention and only after screaming at the moron was I told that I had to go all the way back through the maze. I purchased half of my items, and left. He was rude beyond anything I have ever experienced. He yelled, was rude, and ignored me. Since IKEA is an annual trek, I will go to Schaumburg. I love IKEA. I furnished an entire college apartment with their furniture. I got everything I needed for the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and office space and didn't break the bank doing it. The sales floors are very well organized and if you're looking to furnish parts of a whole new apartment or home, chances are the layout will remind you to get things you might not have even noticed. Then there's the part I like the most...being able to just take item numbers throughout the store and picking everything up off the shelves in the warehouse by the checkout area all at once. Easy as that. Once you get home, there is the matter of assembly, but at the prices and convenience, I'm willing to spend an afternoon on it. read more

The IKEA administrative personnel in the office in Bolingbrook were"over the top" helpful,arranging to let me add on the assembly of the item after the purchase when the 800 number operators told me, in no uncertain terms, I could only arrange for the assembly at the time of purchase.However, the delivery service that they use for drop off and assembly is going to bring them down if they continue to contract them to do that job. They called me at 8AM, on the day they were to deliver and assemble between 9-noon, to CANCEL! It was a nightmare for me but again the administrative office manager came to my rescue and made it right- very classy ladies to work with. So while I would give IKEA 5 stars,(and I liked my furniture) the experience with the delivery company was so disheartening, it ruined shopping there for me. read more

What I love about this store: It is a destination unto itself and it is only 15 minutes from where I live. The store "route' is easy to follow. It's long because they take you past everything, but you can only go one way. Many of the designed products are amazing and do have a European feel. I like the examples of complete living spaces in less than 400 square feet. The restaurant is good, clean and very value priced. The quality of their products is generally good and is definitely good value. Particularly engaging is the lower floor where you can purchase just about anything you would ever need for your house. What I hate about this store: I've made some larger purchases here. Complete kitchen and room furniture. There has been something wrong with every purchase. Delivery is late. Delivery brings the wrong order, has to return to the warehouse and return 4 hours later. Delivery leaves parts of the order behind. Installation is an issue because they don't know what you purchased or can't follow the invoice/order. Outsourced fabrication (of countertops) is the worst. The company they use is diabolical. It takes twice as long as they say to get the countertop fabricated (4 weeks instead of 2). The project managers do not understand kitchens therefore give you incorrect instructions regarding coordination with your other trades, so you have unnecessary expense. IKEA support in store is OK. When you can find someone to help you, they generally know what they are doing, but there are too few staff out in the store or processing returns or problems. To speak to anyone by phone you have to go centrally and then be redirected to the store which takes over 10 minutes Overall very mixed feelings. I will keep returning for the "bits and bobs" would not be large items here again. read more

Where to start, I bought a kitchen from IKEA on 05/06/09 that was supposed to be delivered on 5/26. IKEA would not let me order the appliances with the kitchen because they did not have them in stock. (their computer inventory system sucks,). IKEA said it will call me when the appliances came in. They did not! I called them about 15 days later. I had to go back to the freaking store and place my order beacuse the range was only a cash and carry item that had to be converted to home delivery with the other appliances I ordered that same day (fridge , dishwasher) I wanted to have my entire kitchen delivered because I have to schedule my contractors. IKEA customer service on the phone SUCKS, out of 50 calls I made to after sales customer service EXT 1450, a real person picked up the phone twice. That is horrible! You are forced to leave a message and wait for a call back if any several hours later. The kitchen staff was friendly and helpful, but they are severely hindered by the awful inventory computer system for IKEA. IKEA needs more staff to answer the phone for customer service! Voicemail should not be the primary option!! If you order a kitchen from IKEA make sure that you have the whole day to spend there and several weeks researching the items. I just got off the phone with IKEA customer sevice and the home delivery was scheduled as a customer pickup. How does this happen! It is because they have 16yr olds working in the home delivery dept who don't understand the concept of the job. The 17 yr old cashier screwed up my order as well and I had to go back to the kitchen dept again after spending 3 hrs to place the order and redo the whole order which took another 2.5 hours. (the kitchen people said the order would take only 20 min) IT TOOK 5 1/2 HOURS!!!!!!!!!! To top it all off the voided order was not placed back in inventory so the cashier screw up added 10 days exra to the order becuse there were missing cabinets that could not be included because the voided order exhausted the inventory. (That is why IKEA's inventory system SUCKS!) Voided items should be placed back in inventory immediately!!! IKEA wanted me to pay an extra 109 delivery charge because they didn't have the appliances in stock! The shipping manager insisted that I pay another delivery charge, and I had to get the store manager involved to get the appliances delivered. Why should I have to pay for 2 deliveries when I placed an order for an entire KITCHEN and appliances. I felt like I had to beg to get my ordered delivered. This has been a frustrating experience and you should only shop at IKEA if you can take the product home with you!!!!!!!!! What an awful experience. On this gloomy day in the soul bleaching burbs of Chicago I decided to make a terrarium. The Ikea website showed a plethora of different ideal terrarium plants called "himalaya mix". I called to ensure they had the plants in stock. Terrible customer service line.After talking to a robot for twenty minutes,I was denied the option to speak to an actual employee at the boiling brook store. I was at least told they had over 50 of the plants in stock. Apon arrival the "himalayan mix" consisted of three plants that were not even shown in the online photo. Thier was a palate of other plants in the back store room that I could actually see; I was denied access to those. In thorough frustration I left with nothing. I'll grow my own. I normally don't leave a negative review, but this time I will give a zero star if there is. Ikea's customer service is the most horrible one I've ever met. Thanks for IEKA, my coming baby will sleep on the floor! I ordered bunch of furniture online and will be sent from Ikea Bolingbrook IL, including 2 bed frames, mattress, crib, changing pad, and changing table on May 27th. It was expected to be delivered on June 5th, while received an-email saying sth wrong with my order. Called IKEA customer service number, waited one hour before someone answered the phone, and was told two pieces were not sent, and the local delivery company will be hold until they receive the whole package. They do not know which were sent which weren't. Called the delivery company, they said they don't know either, they will continue to be hold until receive the missed ones, and asked me to call IKEA for further details. Called IKEA again, and the representative said they don't know which parts were missed, and don't know when the missed one will be sent. Back and forth several times, every time near one hour waiting time on call before getting to a representative, still don't know when we can get the package. I like IKEA's product, the design, but the customer service/delivery is a nightmare!!! If you google 'IKEA customer service', you will be surprised to see hundreds of similar negative reviews over the customer service since 2008. As a top 50 'world's most valuable brands', don't you feel shame on your customer service? It's been a few years since I've navigated my way thru this bustling warehouse of Swedish inspired furnishings. It's a great way to register plenty of Steps in our day, while pondering the endless possibilities of some of their furniture pieces. Initially we didn't mind the meandering trail we were forced to take, but after several hours, when our tummies decided we MUST have one of their Cinnamon Rolls, it was beyond frustrating to follow signs that say "short cut to EXIT", only to discover we circled right back around to where we were. My internal GPS is normally amazing, but it couldn't hurt to design a sleek Main Street with perpendicular crossroads bearing little Swedish Names. This way we can text our wandering family members and tell them to meet us at the corner of Lerhamn Lane and Hemnes Highway. After all, we associate IKEA with simplicity, sleek lines, and functionality, so why not apply the same genius design to the store layout? den ar good? ;-) read more

Worst customer service ever. We are re-doing our kitchen in our vacation cottage in Michigan. This Ikea is closest. Have looked at everything online and know what we want, and Ikea offers measuring service, help with kitchen design, and installation. I called them to set up a time for a designer to come out to look at the kitchen. First two times I called their automated phone tree hung up on me. Finally got thru and waited on hold 21 minutes for a person. She told me I had to come into the store to set up an appointment for a designer to come out since "You have to pay for it and we have no way to take payment over the phone." WHAT?? When everyone can turn their iPhone into a credit card swipe, they can't take a credit card over the phone? I explained I was in Michigan, wanted someone to come next week, and was planning on paying for the measurement, design services, travel time, and installation-quite a sum. She was unyielding. I asked to speak with the store manager and she said she 'wasn't allowed' to let me talk to or leave a message for the store manager, but she could let me speak to a senior consultant. I said fine and she put me on hold for another five minutes at which point I just hung up. Really, this is both stupid and the worst customer service I've experienced in quite a while-more so when given it would have been connected to a large purchase! I've been to two different Ikeas (Bloomington, MN; Schaumburg, IL) before and the other two are better in regards to customer service. I felt that I really had to chase people down here to get someone to help me. I don't know if they're understaffed or something but that wasn't any fun. Yesterday I went to this Ikea and I came in with 2 toddlers and we ate in the ikea restaurant on the 2nd floor, for the price it was not worth it at all. I really wish that I would have taken photos because that way people could see what I was served today. I don't want to go into too much detail about the food but I will say this. I asked the food server if I could have some more fries and she said no that what was given to me is the % that everyone gets, I told her that in the photo it looked like more fries. The food sever then took out a scale, placed the plate on top and added about 5 more fries and said "I went a little over but there you go" and handed me the plate as if she did me a favor. It was embarrassing, even the other kitchen staff had a look of disbelief at what she just did. But the way I see its a reflection of the management and clearly they are confusing being cheap with being cost effective, and putting being "cost effective" over customer service. read more

As far as products I love. I don't normally mind the assembly. The only thing I feel ikea is missing is customer service. They don't cater to customers much at all. I'll make this short. I purchased cabinets for my kitchen. Once I finished with my plans I brought them in to order. You have to take your cabinets home the day you purchase. Since I was no ready to house 150 boxes I waited until closer to my install date "they'll be here you have plenty of time" they told me. I went in to purchase them 1 week and 4 days before and to set up a delivery date to save us the hassle. Well. .. not so much. Not only was their next delivery date passed when the install was taking place 30% of the cabinets in my plans were back stocked with no ETA! So as you'd expect I was freaking out and on the verge of tears at every turn. Long story short (very long story) I sacrificed much of my cabinets replacing them with ones that would fit but not my first choice. .spent 3 hours doing this and had to argue for some kind of discount! Reminding them of everything that just took place the last 3 hours. I would not be in this position of they didn't tell me come get them whenever.. why would anyone want to be put through this? Eventually by 11 pm we got our cabinets home after driving to a location 1 hour away to pick up 5 items bc naturally they won't hold them and will sell them first come first serve. Well, you learn the hard way and we did. It's ALL do it yourself, even your own customer service. read more

My family and I went to IKEA today. They double charged our debit card $238. Misinformed my husband about crediting the money back. They said it would be back in our account right away as soon as she is done with the transaction. My hubby checked it with our bank and guess what no credit back. My husband told them. Instead of apologizing they gave my husband a nasty attitude. Two people name Tara and Stephanie who calls themselves high and mighty because they are IKEA managers...lol. Rule #1: You don't argue with the customers especially if you know it's your mistake! #2: it does not mean your a manager from a store like IKEA that you are the CEO of that company #3: no wonder you work there (no offense).
