Upscale Japanese spot on Brickell key. Really love the minimalist Japanese design. They keep the place clean and service is fast and professional (though sometimes hard to flag down). One bathroom each for men and women. Somehow lines kept forming for this smaller size restaurant. I honestly think it was just bad timing tonight, not sure why that was happening. The space isn't huge nor tiny, just the right size I'd say. Quality food and flavoring. Parking garage nearby. Knocked off the one star (was almost going to do two) as the Miami Spice this year was extremely disappointing (vs what I'd say was a nicer one last year). I brought friends to introduce them for the first time since I had a good experience last year, and unfortunately I'm not sure they'd go back because of this same intro spice experience. Small miso soup to start (or you could go for shishito peppers). 4 pieces nigiri's (they were out of the wagu one) and 4 TINY but flavorful maki pieces with one "lemon and roe" plus a mochi (or matcha crème brûlée) for dessert. By the time you're done with tax and tip, one spice is about $84. Ouch. While the flavors were nice, it was a huge tease and we were all still very hungry (all of us got 2-4 tacos afterwards + gelato to put it in perspective). This was also echoed directly to friendly and capable management there, who seemed receptive but unknown if can or will evolve it. For a tiny app, an equivalent to one roll and a piece of mochi, $84 felt like robbery. I get this has been a tough summer for restaurants and many are trying to find the right balance, but this left us all feeling let down by the experience. Would I go back? Yes, but not in a rush, the food and design are nice. General menu in the past is decent. I can't speak for updated prices and portionings since I last ordered off it. Service here was excellent -- our server was great, and the wait for food (an hour and a half-plus for everything to come out) definitely wasn't her fault. The manager (or owner) also took great care of us and even sent out a complimentary fried ice cream, which was really good. My girlfriend loves uni, and this restaurant wasn't too far from our hotel so we gave it a try for our second lunch in Miami. We walked in and was seated pretty quickly since it was mostly empty. They didn't have the sake I wanted to try, so the server recommended another one... was a bit weak so after finishing the first small bottle we ordered the big bottle of it. We started off with miso soup, was so salty... which isn't a good sign for a sushi restaurant and it's a pricey restaurant that automatically included 20% gratuity. With only one server working, was so at times. After eating some sushi, some good some bad, we ordered tempura udon and it was so salty... we only liked the four orders of uni, everything else... don't waste your money. Our bill was over $400 and it wasn't worth it, walked out still hungry... and we don't really eat a lot. read more

Loooved Ikigai! We went there during Miami Spice and loved everything we ate. The fish was so fresh and tasty. We were concerned we wouldn't be full so we ordered an extra item - the Crispy Umami Shrimp which we did not regret at all because it was one of our favorite items. Service was super friendly. The interior of the restaurant is very cozy. The only thing we were caught off guard with was that we were asked if we wanted fresh wasabi, assuming it was included, but it ended up being an extra fee. This is a new spot, everything inside is brand new and shiny, you can tell they put a lot of thought into everything down to the smallest detail to make this look and feel like traditional Japanese dining experience. We did Miami spice but also ordered some nigiri ala carte. Service was quick and our waiter was very polite and explained everything. We had a girls night at Ikigai to try their Miami Spice menu and it was great! There's a parking garage located right next to the building that can be validated at the hostess stand so it's $8 but there's a garage across the roundabout that is free so I would recommend parking there. The interior is beautiful and the service is great. We all tried different things off of the Miami Spice menu but all of our favorites were the nigiri. The fish is very fresh!! We were still hungry after the set menu so we also ordered some handrolls which were all very good. The only critique I have is although the service was great by being quick and we were checked in on frequently, our main server seemed like they didn't know the menu well. I have a gluten intolerant friend so she asked about what was in certain dishes and things he would recommend but each time it seemed like he didn't know how to answer. With their soft opening well on the way to great success, Brickell Key's newest hot spot is ready for your Japanese pallet. Let's start with the decor, oh my gosh, love the simply open modern Japanese style brown (bamboo brown), black and gray colors combination. The space is very clean, sushi bar area, lovely drinking bar area, beautiful tableware. Love the low yet, bright enough lighting. The staff is uniformed in all black, they look exceptionally sharp. Friendly and beautiful host greets you with a smile, get you seated with a menu which has a great variety of Nigiri, Temaki, Sashimi, Rolls, the regular classic Japanese sides, house special and classic Japanese desserts. The Fresh Wasabi for the Sashimi was delicious however I was not expecting it to have a charge seeing that it was done without us asking for it, nonetheless very tasty. The Otoro, Hamachi, Akami, Unagi and Hamachi Serrano Sashimi were all so freshly delicious I order second serving for all of these. They literally melted in the mouth. Our sushi bar experience was great Chef Nacho was the absolute best, he was friendly and his sashimis were chef's kiss. Ask him to make something special, thank me later. We had both the Mochi Ice (passion fruit flavor) and Matcha Cheesecake which were absolutely delicious. The texture and flavor were very pungent is a great tasting way. Part of me wants this place to stay on the down low, but they deserve all the hype. This spot is a hidden gem on Brickell Key. The restaurant is really nice for a quiet date night. There's also a chef's counter, which is fun to watch. I highly recommend everything I had, but especially the smoked kampachi with apples and pecorino, the white fish tiradito, and the nigiri. I came here with some friends after an event for Miami Spice and wasn't sure what to expect. The atmosphere was modern, clean, and pleasantly not too noisy. The server was attentive and guided us through the menu, which was helpful. The food itself was decent for Miami Spice Lunch like $35, but the portions were on the smaller side, so it didn't feel very filling. Considering the price, I would say it was just okay. I also had the Miami Spice here modified to be vegetarian. Tempura was pure joy with a light battering and a dipping sauce that made the vegetables the focus. The vegetarian bowl even though very simple was incredibly tasty with the shiso leaf just waiting to be tasted. The cheesecake was not overtly sweet and was just the right touch to end the lunch. I was hesitant because I did not see Japanese chefs, but these chefs are trained right and everything they are using is top notch. It's casual or dressy, you set the tone. Upscale but relaxed. This gem has successfully benefitted from soft opening and has established itself as a legit leader in Miami's sushi scene. My wife, daughter and some friends and I dined there on Friday night and were fortunate enough to be offered and a master platter of three types of tuna sashimi that was the best I've ever tasted. We also enjoyed roles ( happily for my wife some meat dishes), and other sashimi offerings. Ikigai recently opened on Brickell Key but without any of the glitches of a newbie. I have eaten there three times already and have basically tried almost the whole menu. Each bite is better than the previous in terms of quality. The nigiri in particular is outstanding because the cuts are generous; somehow they have really flavorful rice; and they remain true to Japanese style by not giving you a massive mound of rice that would overwhelm the fish. Also, if you happen to go early on a Saturday night, you might catch their tuna-cutting, where they break down an enormous tuna and you can try each of the various parts, could not be more fresh.
