If you are looking for a fabulous Omakase experience, then this is the place for you! Located in Wynwood, its entrance is on NW 2nd. It is small, beautiful with open space, and intimate that you will enjoy very much. The music is piped in and is relaxing. They provide excellent service and show pride of ownership. We didn't have reservations but we were welcomed and even received the best seats in the house. Our server was Francisco, who has worked there a long time, was excellent! We chose the Oma Deluxe because we wanted the entire experience. Francisco explained each sushi and what part of the fish we were eating. Each dish was brought out separately. There were about 9 pieces of different cuts of fish. They were delicious! My daughter had Sake and I had Non-alcoholic beer. Both went fine with our meal. Afterwards, we were served dessert. Omakai was a great sushi stop in the heart of Wynwood. Clean restaurant, plenty of seating, and even the bathroom passed the clean test. Parking is mostly limited street parking though, so plan ahead. This spot is more about curated tastings, sashimi, nigiri, and handrolls rather than specialty rolls, so don't expect a huge roll menu. We ordered the sashimi assortment, white fish tasting, seared salmon, bluefin tuna tasting, unagi foie gras, and a few handrolls including blue crab and negi toro. Everything tasted super fresh and flavorful, especially the bluefin and unagi foie gras. Portions are on the lighter side though, so we left satisfied but not totally full. Cedrick was awesome and really made the experience better. He knew the menu inside and out and explained everything perfectly. Came here with my sister and her husband. I had read about this place a couple days earlier and loved that they had omakase offerings. Of course, I had to try their Omakai Experience and it was well worth it!!! Each course was super fresh, and the pace was just right. Once again, Yelp? Please, will you introduce half-stars? I'd give 4.5. And being on the fence, thinking back on the times that I have been to Omakai, I have to give 4. Here is the thing: If you like those "fancy specialty rolls" where you pay essentially for cream cheese (what is with Miami and putting cream cheese in everything? Cream cheese isn't an ingredient in Japanese cuisine...) and tempura flakes with eel sauce and "spicy mayo," this NOT the place for you! There are no rolls here, really! This place is for the truly experienced (or adventurous) sushi eaters who want a more traditional sushi experience. I have been here for happy hour (GREAT happy hour!), the Omakai deluxe, OMA and the Omakai Experience. Fish is melt-in your mouth fresh and there are tasting pairings that you will NOT FIND at other sushi restaurants. They offer unique types of fish (Japanese uni, for example). I legitimately dream about the blue crab handroll in a sweet miso mayo. SO. GOOD. It has ruined any other crab handroll at any other establishment for me. The deluxe is a filling course of first an appetizer that changes seasonally. I have been served most often the seaweed salad, which is good, but nothing out of the world special. Next come the sashimis, which again change occasionally. I love the sashimi in ponzu, which is also offered on happy hour. I also save some of the wakame leaves (the flat ones that are found in miso soup) that had accompanied the seaweed salad (the typical, rehydrated, pickled with sesame seeds wakame stems) and dip the leaves into the ponzu to eat. Yummmm. The nigiri special and sashimi specials are always a bit different and usually are topped or paired with different ingredients to accompany the fresh fish texture and subtle flavor sushi lovers crave. For example, ponzu or a sheaf of shishito leaf between fish and rice on the nigiri. One of my favorite nigiris of all time is the sake toro (salmon belly) lightly torched and topped with a touch of pickled chopped daikon with truffle. YES. TRUFFLE. Another favorite of mine is the tuna tasting, in which one of the nigiri tastings is chopped tuna, but not super fine, topped with different type of pickled veggies and wrapped in nori. OMAKAI EXPERIENCE: I had wanted to try this for forever! 1. Began with two oysters and one nigiri with caviar and a pickled quail egg yolk. The oysters were great and topped with a Japanese-style accoutrements. The nigiri was quite good, although the quail egg overpowered the taste a bit, but the caviar added the best "pop!" texture to the fresh fish and creamy yolk. 2. The palate cleanser: one of my favorite and something I would have NEVER thought to be together as a dish! The bottom was soft silken tofu, topped with UNI and ikura, all in a small martini-glass. Oh. MY. GOD!!! Silken tofu, with the slightly more dense, sweet and umami uni and then a salty, pop of ikura for texture. TO. DIE. FOR. 3. A sashimi came out and ... I honestly do not remember the dish or name of fish because of the complexity of ingredients and the fish was not one I'd tried before ever. One of those types of fish that is specifically found at Omakai and other high end sushi restaurants rather than the usual "salmon," "tuna," "escolar" or "yellowtail" (not that there is anything wrong with those cuts but the Omakai experience provided those rare species of nigiri!). 4. This is perhaps one of my favorites: wagyu carpaccio with sliced onions marinated in ponzu and topped with a few stems of fresh chive. WOW! One would worry that the ponzu would overpower the wagyu, but it cut through the soft richness of the wagyu perfectly to accompany the wagyu and bring out its natural, rich flavor and texture as a highlight. PERFECTLY balanced. 5. Next was a flight of 3 nigiris. Sea bream, um...crap, I do not remember, but it is not because it was not good! There were just many components to each dish and about 9 dishes in total! 6.) Next was also one of my favorite dishes. I know I have said that 3 times so you know how good this tasting was! It was black cod, cooked PERFECTLY, ontop of pickled cabbage slaw and topped with a miso butter. I. I literally melted. The fish was cooked PERFECTLY, and the miso on top was just enough to again bring out the texture and subtle flavor of the fish. The slaw I could have done without. It had no flavor and I was expecting an acidity and crunch which would have rounded out the dish texture and flavor wise- but the fish and miso was so good I do not care about the immperfection 7. 4 nigiris, one including saltwater eel, a first for me. 8. Last was the most disappointing- vanilla gelato. A let down to the meal and I wanted a hand roll! All in all, great place. I'd write more but twice had to re-edit my review because I hit the max characters!!! read more

The staff is so kind from the waitress, to the server, to the food runner. I ordered the oma omakase. It started with an appetizer (they gave edamame with thick salt crystals, yum). Then they did their sashimi special with caramelized onions. Bonus points for giving two huge sides of ginger. The experience continued with: Kanpachi Nigiri Salmon Nigiri Yellowtail Nigiri Bluefin Tuna Nigiri And ended with 2 hand rolls (their special i believe it was salmon, and then a blue crab one). We were a party of 5, and after going thru the menu and looking at reviews here we decided on 4 OMA Deluxes and some a la carte options to fill the 5th party. Each of the OMA Deluxe items were amazing, and the servers will explain exactly what's included in each of the dishes. You honestly get excellent value out of the $50 you pay, even if the portions are on the smaller size. Sucks that the exchange rate is so bad for us Canadians right now. We came here for our anniversary dinner, and as former NYC residents, we don't say this lightly: this was one of the best omakase experiences we've ever had. One of the worst experiences I've ever had dining in coconut Grove.. The hostess was amazing, but the bartender was very offputting rude and seem like she just didn't want to be there or working. I then transferred to a table. The server was unattended and uninterested and also seem like he just didn't want to be there. The attention to detail is so thorough and wonderful. It was truly an experience for multiple senses. It smelled really nice inside, the greeters were very pleasant and it is decorated well. The presentation of the utensils was careful and purposeful. The chopsticks and holder were so cute that I considered theft, but that wouldn't be very neighborly of me. (Although I believe the chopsticks were perfectly fine to take as they're wood and that seems a bit unsanitary to reuse, but please correct me if I'm wrong). I tried a green apple sake that was so fresh, refreshing and mildly sweet. I don't typically enjoy sake but this changed my mind. I had the opportunity to sample multiple flavors and green apple was a front runner. The salmon sashimi came with a pickled onion that paired so well. I'd never had it like that and now I don't know if I can have it any other way. The portions are pretty small so be prepared for that. Standard sushi pricing with smaller than average portions. Might be a Miami thing. The miso soup was delightful and it's served traditionally so you are not provided a spoon initially but you are able to request one. The tuna was fresh and delicious. I ended up going the second tier and at this tier they were able to accommodate for a shellfish and sesame allergy which was very much appreciated. Each items tasted very good and very fresh. The presentation of each piece was very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall, I would recommend OMAKAI for a casual meal, a date night or anything in between. Stopped in at Omakai Sushi around 9 p.m. on a Friday with my wife, just looking to enjoy a quick sushi roll each. We were promptly approached by the hostess and told we couldn't be served because a party of 10 was coming an hour later. I explained we would only order one roll each and be gone well before then, but was told she'd need to get approval from the chef first. It's a shame that locals can't pop into a downtown sushi spot without feeling snubbed. The whole interaction came across as snobbish and priority-driven, as if we weren't worth seating because we wouldn't be running up a big bill. Unfortunately, this left a bad taste in my mouth.
