We chose Bar Berto randomly, mainly because it was busy and yet had one nice table free near where we could watch all the passers-by. I think this place is known for its beers, but we were doing campari spritzes and stuck with it as we perused the menu. We ordered a mozzarella di bufala appetizer and each had a pasta. Mine was the Genovese specialty - Trofie Pasta Genovese - and my dining companion ordered a ravioli dish. Both were excellent, but the Trofie was a revelation. Just drowning in the basil pesto and the pasta pieces were so unique and the texture so perfect. We loved our meal and the service was excellent. We were helped by two different young women who seemed like international students or travelers - seemed like English was their first language. So glad we chose to luxuriate on the square - it was fun to people watch and be in such a lively place for a few hours.

However, some opted to be added to the dinner reservation list. The restaurant is very busy, and waitstaff are bustling around. There was a sizable lunch group, so they can accommodate large groups. Very, VERY thin sheets of pasta supporting layers of tomato and pesto sauce. The portion size was on the smaller side. Fantastic. Pesto - When in Genoa, you must try pesto! Fish + potato - This was a toss-up, but a unique (at least to us) combination. Fish flesh is mixed with mashed potatoes. Trattoria Ugo is a completely legit and ultra-authentic eatery with a clientele that's more than 90 precent locals - that's how good the food is! The food here is nothing short of amazing and the portion sizes are so generous that it's almost impossible to go away hungry :-) Everything on the menu is wonderful, but I highly recommend the pasta with pesto. There's also a surprisingly broad wine list, and their house wine is very good, and really inexpensive - it pairs very nicely with the pesto. Water (both sparlking and still) is complimentary, and the service is outstanding - you'll have an incredible meal here! Tip: The portion sizes being as large as they are, I strongly suggest you pick either one primo or one secondo; if you get both it will be very difficult to finish.
