Shocked to see this place rated so low because this was one of the best meals of my life. Came here for dinner before Stephen's Talkhouse Karaoke and was so happy with our experience here. The ambiance here is low lit and romantic, lots of candles and wine bottles all around. Our waiter was top notch and took us through the entire menu, explaining all the different kitchens they have on the premises. We started off with the fluke crudo which was refreshing and delicious. We also ordered the pear gem lettuce salad which was as amazing as the waiter described - super well balanced, the nori bread crumbs added the perfect touch to this. We also decided to try the sardine tin which was fun, served with delicious freshly baked bread. We ordered the mushroom flatbread which was better than any pizza I've ever had. We also got the little neck clams which were fresh and flavorful, and the cacio e pepe which was rich with fresh, chewy noodles. We ended with the rhubarb crostata, crumbly and perfect. I don't get the hate on this business, I would come here again in a heartbeat. read more

This is my first time posting a review about anything, ever. Our experience tonight was a nightmare. The service was shockingly bad. We sat for an hour waiting for a bread basket. We were repeatedly ignored. The stench of sewer wafted through the outdoor seating area. We should have left but we stayed to eat the lukewarm food that was served late and ridiculously overpriced. It was a special occasion for my brother who traveled a long way to be there. Will never go back. read more

Was here on a busy weeknight and had a great meal. We ordered the mushroom focaccia to start. I had the salad as a starter and the duck as my main dish. The salad was great - I really enjoyed the fresh fruit and local produce. I asked that the duck wasn't super bloody, but unfortunately I might have gone too far in asking since it came out a bit chewy for me. I am mostly taking off one star since we got to the restaurant before it was busy and asked to sit one table over since the only other table that was taken was the one next to where we were being seated. The hostess let us know that unfortunately all the tables were booked and we couldn't switch, however, when a different group asked the same question five minutes later when they were being seated, their table was switched. We went here on a Sunday evening with the gals who has been here before. The place was lively with locals and families. We had a drink at the bar as they prepped our table. The bartender was seasoned and skilled making an excellent Cosmo. The menu is full of local and seasonal dishes that are quite enticing. We decided to order a bunch of things to nosh on. The prawns were noteworthy and we sopped up the sauce with extra bread. We topped off the meal with a rustic tart of nectarines (maybe) that was served with a creme fraiche. Lovely. I don't know how many people reading this are Etta James fans, but this restaurant reminds me of her song,'Wet Match.' Looks good on the outside, but a disappointing experience. I left this restaurant feeling very annoyed. The outstanding issue was the service. I don't blame the waitstaff. I'd say the problem is that of the manager or owner. More waitstaff needs to be hired. As a former waitress, I know it is practically impossible to adequately take orders and serve 75 people if you only hire 2-3 people to do the job. There were 5-6 competent people busing the tables. The manager/owner conveniently, magically turned them into waitstaff. Even with this situation the service was unacceptable. It took much too long to be waited on. (Except for the water..as I said, good bus people.) It took way too long to get the food and one of the small plates we ordered was never given to the kitchen. (The busboy told us this... he also had to bring the check.) The waiter was MIA. The menu was not very inviting. Dishes were not well described. There were literally only 2 desserts offered. Did they want you to go next door to buy one of their cappuccinos or pastries? I noticed the tables on both sides of us did not stay for dessert. The food was mediocre at best with small portions and exceedingly high prices. I'm not going to complain about the prices...that was expected considering the location... Visiting friends in Water Mill and they took us here for dinner. 1stly, the food was great: we started with small plates and they were all xlnt. I had skirt steak chimmi for main and it was essentially a 10! Glass of red wine very tasty and good quality. So why only 3 stars? the NOISE!! Understood we're in the heart of Season here but I measured the sustained noise level inside at 85-91db which will do permanent hearing damage with prolonged exposure. I mean there were times the noise was actually frightening! It was SO distracting from the experience! We asked if it was possible to be reseated to a table outside but, in a word, no. I was hoping to enjoy this space due to the pictures online and description of meals. We were a group of 7 and had a reservation for 9 pm and were at the host stand by 8:50 pm, we waited by the bar for approximately 20 minutes until our table was ready. We got drinks at the bar. The 1 star I gave is for the drinks we got - shoutout to that bartender. After that, we were sat and our server and the managerial staff apparently had never seen a group of BIPOC women because we were watched and very obviously spoken about most of the time, which is uncomfortable to say the least. We were going to order appetizers and the server made a condescending comment, as if we did not know what we were ordering. We are the type of people who will make the best out of a bad situation and brushed it off- however, when the bill came our server and perhaps the manager on staff Saturday night watched us as if we were going to leave without paying our tab. There are plenty of other restaurants that serve great Italian food--without the side of discrimination. If Il Buco Al Mare truly wants to improve, they should implement racial bias training for their staff, an apology is not enough. Do better! read more

Il Buco al Mare has 3.5 stars on Yelp, which I would say is a pretty accurate rating. I would have gone with 4, but decided on 3 based on a few things from my dining experience: First off, my husband and I usually like to share a bunch of shareable things instead of ordering individual large mains. We ordered the following: Oysters - no complaints here, they were delicious. They were already dressed with vinegar and whatever else, it didn't come with condiments or anything. Crudo - yummy! So tasty. It also had little bits of mango in it and all the flavors really complemented well together. Margherita Focaccia - this was basically a Margherita pizza on focaccia bread. Really good! The bread was dense but delicious. Stuffed Squid Tin - this was interesting. It came with little slices of crostini with butter. It was just ok, but what was not so great was that as I was cutting into it on my plate I saw a small piece of hair- I was done eating after that. We told the waitress who took it off our bill, which was appreciated. Everything else we ordered: Prawns, Broccolini, and Roasted Corn - all of these were nothing special, but good! I would have given Il Buco a 4, but after the whole hair incident I bumped it down to a 3. The meal was good- not great, but not terrible either. Better than average I would say. Being in Amagansett where good restaurants are far and few in between, I would say this is one of the better ones. This place has a VERY LIMITED MENU and NO LIQUOR LICENSE. They have a selection of the menu of seafood that is from "tins". They import the mackerel, squid and scallops from Spain. However, the prawns and the steak were DELICIOUS!! The SERVICE was SUBPAR. The manager had to cover for his staff and take over for us. Beautiful restaurant that is thankfully open all year. My colleagues and I stopped in and all chose to go with a focaccia (Don't call it pizza!) albeit different versions. I'd love to try the other menu items but if I had to live off of their focaccia for the rest of my life I'd be a pretty happy person. The combination and flavors were absolutely delicious. I went with the Roasted Mushroom and I chose wisely. My colleagues ordered the Eggplant and Anchovy and also a Bianca. They were both outstanding as well but I'm a big fan of mushrooms. I tried all three as sharing is strongly encouraged here. The wait staff were super friendly and we even got to talk with the chef for a bit of background on the restaurant and area. We dined here last evening and found it to be a very charming and lively setting. The hostess was kind enough to provide a heater on a somewhat nippy evening. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable and pleasant but disappointed in our decision to skip ordering a main dish. And we were puzzled as to why a neighboring table (of seemingly regular guests) who ordered the same item after us, was served it before us. In terms of sod the food, the margarita focaccia flatbread was the star of our meal. The flatbread was perfectly cooked and a big hit. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Crostata for desert. While we did like the corn, it definitely needed salt. In fact most of the food lacked salt, but that may just be a personal taste issue. If I could give 0 stars I would. If you are not WHITE do not visit this establishment. The overall atmosphere is sexy around sunset and into the night. Great lighting. I'm surprised this restaurant has such low stars. We had a nice meal here on a Friday night offseason. I think it will be a lovely place to come when the weather is nicer and outdoor seating is available. The one down side to the restaurant is that it is really not gluten free friendly, so it was difficult for me to be able to share things with my husband. They could easily add gluten free pasta to the menu, but as of now they did not have many options for him. I would like to be able to return with friends so I can try more things, but I got: the white focaccia (essentially a pizza), which was delicious, and the potato was a unique addition. I took a couple slices home as I didn't want to fill up since my husband couldn't help me with this dish. I also ordered the cacio e pepe, which was cooked perfectly, but I wish it had a bit more cheese. My husband ordered the head on shrimp and the crudo. He also was able to enjoy a fish as his main dish. If they would be able to have more items be gluten free friendly, I thin we'd come back often in the summer. read more

We questioned the waiter who did not give us back our original slip and insisted this is correct. Long story short after getting the manager involved a desert of 30 was added to our check. Made for a very bad feeling. We are East end residents and eat out often. This has never happened before. I think the waiter was trying to take advantage of who he thought were Tourists. I'm conflicted. The food is amazing as always. Our waiter, Micheal, was absolutely the worst waiter I've encountered in my 40 years as a restaurant customer. He didn't ask if we wanted drinks, didn't ask if the food was satisfactory, didn't ask if we wanted dessert, etc. I asked to talk to the manager and believe it or not, they sent Michael to talk to me. What a disappointment! My husband and I both were eagerly looking forward to this meal during our recent vacation to Montauk. We live in the DC area but had been to Il Buco in NYC before and were really excited to try this location at the beach. Probably one of the most regrettable dining experiences I have had to date. The service was SO horrendous it's hard to know where to start. I rarely write bad reviews and almost never mention names but our server, Matt, really crossed a line. He was rude and presumptuous while pretending to be our long lost best friend. I ordered tuna and the food Runner brought me mackerel so I let him know there was a mistake. Matt came out and said they had run out of tuna so he sent out the "next best thing". What?! A server (especially at this price point...but we won't go there)...a server ANYWHERE should always know what they have run out of (or have low inventory in) before putting the order in. But it happens, no big deal...however, there is NO scenario ever where a server should take the liberty to order a replacement item without checking with the guest first and then act like they were doing the guest a favor for which they should be grateful. In addition, the menu is very limited with only 5 main courses to choose from. I decided to do two appetizers as my meal since none of the main course offerings were enticing to me. Matt brought out my two appetizers while my family had to wait 45 minutes watching me eat while I incessantly offered them bites. I waited as long as one reasonably could for their food to come out but both my apps (burrata with cherries and raw tuna with watermelon) needed to be enjoyed cool and were quickly warming up. Even with a total communication breakdown, the server should have been able to do the math...five people with four main dishes and two appetizers. At worst, one of the apps should have been held back. Or just ask! Most restaurants will ask a guest the order they want the food to come out in if there's any doubt. A guest ordering two apps in lieu of a main course should not have thrown them for a loop, especially when they only have 5 main dishes! After 45 long minutes of NOTHING but water on the table, which we refilled ourselves, the rest of the food came out and then I watched my family eat while they offered me bites. To give credit where credit is due, both my burata dish and raw tuna dish were excellent! It's a shame the service was so bad that the overall experience was such a disappointment and source of frustration. read more
