As a spot we find ourselves returning to a couple of times a year, the kitchen continues to operate at a gold standard, even when the front-of-house seems to be stuck in a bit of a fog. The Food: A Seasonal Symphony If you are coming strictly for the palate, you will not be disappointed. The freshness of the ingredients is palpable: * Oysters: These were pristine--served icy cold and exceptionally fresh. The mignonette was the standout here; perfectly balanced and bright, it elevated the oysters rather than masking them. * Pea Soup: This was a revelation. It tasted as if the peas had been picked just yesterday; it was vibrant, "green," and utterly delightful. * Lobster Roll: While it was admittedly small in stature (especially for the price point), the execution was flawless. It was bright, crunchy, and avoided the heavy mayo-trap that many local spots fall into. The Service: A Comedy of Errors Unfortunately, the gap between the kitchen and the dining room was wide during this visit. While our waitress was personally lovely, the actual mechanics of the service were incredibly frustrated: * Timing Issues: We were offered bread at the start of the meal, yet it didn't grace the table until we were finished eating. * The Water Gap: Our sparkling water sat empty for far too long. Refills were offered, but like the bread, they arrived only after the meal had concluded. * Lack of Proactivity: There was no offer for drink refills throughout the courses. * Accountability: Most disappointing was the lack of acknowledgment. Mistakes happen, but a simple "I'm so sorry for the delay" goes a long way. Instead, the lapses were never addressed or accounted for. The Verdict: Topping Rose House serves some of the most phenomenal, fresh food in the Hamptons. However, when you're paying Bridgehampton prices, you expect the service to match the caliber of the kitchen. We came to dine outside on a Monday afternoon and it wasn't busy, no res and we were sat immediately. Our server was a young man, and he was wonderful. Extremely attentive! I couldn't believe he was only 19 years old, very professional. I ordered the Cucumber Fizz, which I honestly hated. I don't think I've sent a cocktail back in years, but it wasn't a proper gin fizz at all. It just tasted really muddy and was missing some citrus. My girlfriend got a glass of Whispering Angel which came out very cold and she enjoyed. We ordered the 30 grams of caviar for $148. The caviar itself was very tasty and came on ice. I didn't love the crème fraîche, it was missing some onion or chive on the side (granted, that wasn't stated on the menu, so that's okay because it came how it was intended). However, I was NOT happy with the blinis. They weren't tasty, they were all different shapes and sizes, some had crusty edges, some had curled-up edges. They just didn't look like there was much care put into them, especially for the price. We also shared the lamb- ordered it medium. Two of the pieces came out well done, and one medium. Yes, the sauce was tasty, but the meat, again, for the price, was just not cooked correctly. I was starving at that point, so I told him not to worry about it and that they didn't have to make it again. Our waiter was great though, offered to send out a new one but we declined because we needed to get going. Also shared the squash blossom quesadilla which I was psyched for. I love squash blossoms, but there was just wayyyy too much cheese in it, not enough seasoning. I get that it's a quesadilla, but the cheese was overwhelming. The jalapeño sauce also didn't really go with it for my preference. Overall, this experience just did not even come close to being what we thought it would be. They did take 2 drinks off the bill to offset the well-done lamb, very nice and for sure appreciated it. But overall, I would never come back. Made sure I tipped our waiter 30% because none of the issues were with service. But blah! The ambiance is pretty both inside & outside but absolutely skip this place. On Saturday, we dined at Topping Rose House and requested outdoor seating. However, we received a message indicating that, due to weather conditions, all guests were required to be seated indoors. It appears this decision may have been influenced by staffing shortages or reservation demands, despite favorable weather outside. The service was inattentive; our water was not regularly refilled, and other requests were not promptly addressed. Although we ordered different types of eggs, they were all served dry, leaving us unsatisfied. The cost of a coffee was twelve dollars, with an additional twelve dollars charged for a refill. The high price of twelve dollars for a coffee is unreasonable, especially considering the beverage was weak and lacking in flavor. While I have previously enjoyed lunch and dinner at this establishment, both experiences being satisfactory, this visit was disappointing. It may have been an isolated incident; however, the experience did not justify the expense or the wait. read more

The food here was fantastic but dear God, you can get old waiting for it. I came here for brunch with a few girlfriends on a Sunday before hitting the nearby Hampton Flea. The place itself is adorable, we sat outside and had a great view of the grounds. The Topping Rose is tucked away enough that it offers a quiet place to grab a meal, but close enough to the main strip that you can quickly be on your way to anything else that's on your Bridgehampton agenda. That is, if your meal ever comes out. I'm guessing this had to be a kitchen/bar issue because while our server was lovely and attentive, the wait for drinks and especially food was excruciating. I had an Aperol Spritz which was refreshing once it finally arrived. My friend and I opted to split oysters as an appetizer, but they came out with the main course about an hour and 15 minutes after we'd been seated, which was disappointing. My eggs benedict with smoked salmon was perfect though, all things said. The free olive bread they have here was also delicious and luckily came out in a decent amount of time, we asked for seconds to hold us off in between. Our past two visits to Topping Rose have been disgraceful due to the hostesses. We live year round in the area and visit often. A few weeks ago,we make an early reservation because we had our toddler grandson with us. We arrive at an empty restaurant and are shown a table on the patio on the pool side next to a busing station. I expressed my displeasure and ask to move to the lawn area. There was not another customer in the lawn area I requested. I was told all of the tables in this empty restaurant are committed. We did make a reservation a week in advance. When I went back and spoke to the hostess again (the one with the blond hair), I was again told there is nothing that can be done to move us. The manager overheard and interjected that of course we could have another table. Tonight, we are 7 people. We are shown a table that would seat 4 comfortably inside in an empty dining room. I told the hostess I was unhappy with the table because we actually couldn't all fit. I was again told (by the hostess with the brown hair after being seated by the hostess from our prior visit) there was nothing they could do because all of the tables were committed. It was AN EMPTY DINING ROOM at this point. I told her we couldn't stay if this was are only choice of tables and was again told there was nothing that could be done. Unbelievable, but true. I then pointed to an empty table with a box on it in the corner and told her that she should put the box on the floor and move that table to ours so we could all fit. Her answer "I will see if that is possible". Mind you, a martini is $28 and French fries are $16 and they couldn't care less if a year round customer stays or not. Clearly my last visit to this restaurant but seriously disgraceful. I will say the waitstaff are always wonderful. The food is fine, duck was terrible. It's a shame that the hostesses are a group of mean, unprofessional kids. read more

Topping Rose House is an elegant but casual restaurant (I will explain what I mean in the last paragraph). It features a nice entry porch with valet. Located within a small wood-sided boutique hotel, it was not easy to find the main entry at first. We accidentally entered straight to the dining area, so had to walked through patrons to see a reception area. It would have been great for either valet or receptionist outside to guide first-time visitors, or at least provided with a proper signage. I visited two Jean-Georges within a week, so it was a great opportunity to see how the quality was kept throughout restaurants under the chef. Ordered a lobster roll. which I had from the Fish and Co at the Tin House in New York City; surprisingly the same visual and tastes! The roll was perfectly toasted with top-notch lobster meats. Thin-sliced fries were well received by all of us. The tenderloin (cooked in medium) was also great- with smoked peppers on top, well-preserved juicy tenderloin, and well-paired sauce. Fried calamari was also a perfect choice as an appetizer with a glass of Brut champagne. All the staff were very professional and polite. There was something to improve though. The atmosphere was a bit noisy, felt tight spatially, and the circulation was also confusing. There were no dress code, and the coats had to be placed on top of an empty chair. I guess the main reasons are its location and whom it is supposed to serve- hotel guests. For this reason, I don't recommend this place for intimate couples who want a quiet dinning experience, but perfect for a brunch with family including kids. read more

We had called in advance to make a reservation for 6 and after speaking to the manager we're assured we would be seated inside if we arrived by 6:30 ( instead of 7). Upon arrival we were told that we had to sit outside. RUDELY, and with a lot of attitude the hostess told us that she sees the note that we should be inside but she really did not care. While the food was acceptable the evening was ruined because we were not dressed to be sitting outside and nothing was done to try to accommodate our party. A very cute place that is perfect for a bachelorette party or just brunch!!!! Upon entering into the parking lot I noticed that there was valet but you can also just park your car into the lot as well. The iced coffee was very good. The omelette was OK - the veggies weren't mixed into the eggs, it felt more like a flap where everything was underneath and was not cooked for long. Nobody would take our drink orders and when they brought our food, they literally brought the wrong meal to the wrong person for every single course. Even the drinks were brought to the wrong person. Topping Rose was... fine. We went for dinner + drinks in the evening and the first round was underwhelming (vodka soda riff with sparkling water / sugar / lemon and a bee-something.) The ambiance is slightly outdated and there's a lot of employees crossing with guests due to the layout but it has a somewhat charming outdated family dining room feel to it. The outside is nicer. Someone's elderly grandparent made a reservation on our behalf and miscounted the party, and one of the hosts (who may have been training? Since there were 2) was extremely rude about it over the course of the hour+ we waited for a table -- the rudest experience from a server I've ever seen -- to the point we left. The other host was much more helpful in helping us set up a new reservation. We went back a couple days later for brunch instead. Drinks were better, but the espresso martini could use a dairy liqueur. The food was good, but not great -- calamari and truffle pizza, lobster roll, and salmon were all fine. The lobster roll being on a potato bun was new and a little odd. Our servers were helpful and staff all around was much more pleasant. Overall everything was fine but nothing special. Topping Rose was really good. We ate out in the barn, socially distanced, after Cuomo made restaurants shut down at 10pm. We got there at 7 and just made it out by 9:50, even with coffee and French macarons. I must say the coffee and dessert was the highlight of the meal. Everything else was really good, and we definitely paid for it. We did a table ribeye which was good. I did the seabass which was scaled and nice. Also had a couple pizzas, sides, salmon, and surprisingly the chicken breast was standout. Service was perfect. Bar was meh (sent Aperol instead of Campari but fixed it). I've been to Topping Rose twice in the last couple months and while my husband and I had a wonderful experience our first meal, the second time we went with a large group of friends and had a late reservation - the utter disrespectfulness of the manager unfortunately means we will not return and we will make sure other people do not come here as well. While I understand that state regulations require individuals to order food when they are ordering drinks, it is not up to management to tell us whether I am ordering enough food - that is borderline violation of people's mental health - for example, one of our companions has an eating disorder and it is extremely uncomfortable asking this person to order more than they otherwise would normally eat. It honestly just seemed like a money grab. At the end, he asked us to leave the restaurant and made a scene. He should frankly be fried. This experience aside, the first time we went I thoroughly enjoyed the food we ordered, in particular, I would highly recommend the salmon on crispy rice. If you've ever been to Jean George in the city you also know that the tuna ribbons there are phenomenal - the tuna tartare here is essentially the same except the tuna is not in ribbon form. The steak and lobster we ordered were also very tasty. It is disappointing to have to leave this review, but unfortunately we will not be returning. read more

The new staff, especially the waiters, were incredibly rude. I was pushed several times while sitting on my own chair. The bold waiter, who was wearing a scarf as if it was a mask, walked by behind me and pushed me in my back and walked away with no regrets. After 15 minutes he did the same. Another waiter almost hit me with his elbow. The food was terribly tasteless and cheap given the price ($168 per person). JUST NOT GOOD AT ALL! The water cost $12 and it was Essentia (not even Acqua Panna or Sanpellegrino) in a plastic bottle that costs $1.99 in Target. There were no table cloths, no embellishments in the room (wasn't it Christmas Eve?!). I guess they didn't want to spend anything to create festive atmosphere for guests. Also, one of our glasses had a lipstick stain, which is unforgivable given the prices and all the fuss about the place. I would NOT recommend this place and will NOT return ever. read more

Not impressed at all! We came with a large group fir lunch and had two tables outside! The service was terrible. It took over 2.5 hours to get all of us something to eat and drink and this was with a prearranged limited menu! One of the waiters, a blonde guy with blue glasses was completely useless, almost seemed he was on drugs or high. The other one had to make up for it. No vegan options on the limited menu, on the regular menu there's also slim pickings, I was able to get the kale salad without Parmesan then the avocado toast and some fruit for dessert. The kale salad was a bowl of thinly chopped kale! A couple of tiny croutons floating around in it. No other veggies. Not a tomato, no radish, nothing. A total embarrassment! $21! The avocado toast came and I was given a steak knife! The bread had been toasted to such a crisp it was almost not edible! The second vegan in our group gave up and only ate the topping! There was a chunk of avocado mush on the bread, covered in crusted herbs covered with micro greens. A half lime on the side. Nothing impressive. $19 For dessert we had the choice of a cake, ice cream and sorbet and also fresh fruit. I ordered the fruit which was a pretty plate of some berries and melon. Some of us ordered the sorbet. A single ball in a tiny ramekin. No garni, topping, nothing. This place is not trying to impress. Prices are up there. Service and food are not. The good is that it is a charming hotel, and probably the nicest hotel in the Hamptons. The staff did an excellent job but not very personable. Be sure to avoid a room on the highway - I ended up sleeping in my car most of the first night (now that was a first!) . Rather than helping out or even saying they were sorry for the experience, the hotel simply told me that they remain full during the busy season. read more

Not sure about all the other low star reviews, but we come back to this place consistently and love it. The salmon crispy rice is absolutely to die for, I would come back just for this alone. Truly one of the best I've ever had. The cauliflower with cous cous was also amazing and incredible filling actually, as was the salmon, which was perfectly crusted. The dinner for3 with tip was close to $500 , I'm fine with that,however in the dining room the table behind me had a dog seated at there table,in its own chair drinking water out of a bowl! Wondering what the health department would say! The table in front of us had two children one with her feet up on the table playing video games and the other with a backwards baseball cap. Thursday night dinner experience during covid times Jul 2020. We had reservation via Resy and we were seated promptly. Reservation was for pool side but surprisingly it was indoor with big glass doors opening to pool. Tables were socially distanced and could feel cool breeze from outdoors. Service was great, attentive. Server made great recommendations and helped navigate thru the menu. Overall food was flavorful. Lamb chops that come with green peppers was star dish for the night. My overall impression of this restaurant is that the food is outstanding but the service is lacking. The ambiance in their outdoor dining area is really beautiful and classy, however, if you are dining late at night, the lighting is not quite sufficient. In terms of the food, every single dish was impressive and I would get everything again. For appetizers, I tried the tuna tartare, salmon sushi, and black truffle pizza. Each dish was incredibly well done and had many dimensions of flavor. For my main, I had the parmesan risotto which was extremely good albeit a small portion and the salmon which was also very good. We ordered the sautéed corn on the side and it was very refreshing and a nice complement to the other dishes. For cocktails, I tried the strawberry daiquiri and an old fashioned and both were just okay. I initially ordered the passion fruit whiskey drink, but was informed they ran out of passion fruits. In terms of the service, the general gist is that it was very slow. We got our drinks 30 minutes after we were seated and apps didn't come out until 50 minutes after we were seated. The waiters did not check on us other than to take our order and deliver our food. For a Jean-Georges restaurant, I was shocked that they did not serve bread or an amuse-bouche, nor did they have any specialty touches. The bathroom is a weird set up in that you have to go into the main building and down an elevator in order to get to them. While there is a parking lot, it seemed to not be quite large enough to accommodate all of the hotel and restaurant guests. read more

I booked an 8pm dinner on sunday, which happened to be easter. They informed me it would be a $78 prix fixe menu, which is fine. We arrived and were handed the menus. As usual we could pick an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert. Except ... it was a brunch menu and they were sold out of several of the dishes, without adequate substitution offers. Of the 5 mains, 3 were full-on breakfast dishes (pancakes, eggs benedict, avocado toast). There was a salmon dish that was sold out but they could prepare it with sea bass instead. And there was a lamb rib dish for $10 extra. Shortly after we sat down i heard them telling the next couple that came in that the ribs were sold out as well. I don't eat lamb and did not come to this joint to pay $80 to eat pancakes at 8pm so my option was basically: "not-salmon salmon." Having worked at restaurants in the past, I'm actively endeavoring to be as understanding as possible. So i explained my predicament to the server, noting it's late for most of the brunchier options and asking if she might be so kind as to check if any of the many options on the regular menu might be available. Anything!, i said, even something simple like a burger, pizza, or salad. She just said "sorry, no." I asked, "Would you mind terribly asking the kitchen if there's anything at all they could make as an exception in this situation?" She went to check and later came back to say "they can do a burger but only a very simple one, just really a burger with cheese on a bun with french fries." How appetizing. Whatever, i got what i wanted. Great! Except the food was garbage. Seriously i'm super easy to please and could not finish eating this burger. I had a third of it and they did not bat an eye when they took this full dish away later. My appetizer was fine, a burrata with toast. Hard to screw up. My friend's white asparagus was overdone. She had the pork chops (which were underdone). For dessert, we had a forgettable molten chocolate cake and a almond cake that was actually quite nice despite being paired with an odd tropical fruit sorbet. We saw some people who arrived after us walking out after getting the menu spiel. Wise of them. Everything was also incredibly slow despite the fact there were maybe 4-5 other tables there at most. For the record, none of this is any of the servers' fault. They were all trying but unprepared by poor management to explain the deranged decision to serve $40 egg dishes in the dead of night. Still, an unmitigated disaster of a dinner. Also the decor is heinous: acid green banquet seating and bizarre arts-and-crafty exposed-wiring wall sconces... unsubscribe. This restaurant is stunning whether you sit indoors or outside/ we sat outside surrounded by heaters in the brisk weather. The building facade was a traditional white Hampton colonial. The inside was modern and stunning. I could enjoy a cocktail at that bar for hours. Our brunch eggs were excellent and we really appreciated the unlimited coffee pours. Haven't gone here in years...but oh my how things change. This use to be one of the best restaurants in the area, holding the bar high. Now, it's honestly just short of garbage. The bread was inedible/spongy, the lobster was under cooked, the salad was brown. We were first put out off by the server stating no modifications were allowed (even to accommodate a gluten allergy). Once the food showed up (after waiting for a very long time- mind you there were 3 tables seated w/ 6 people total in the dining room), we were incredibly disappointed. I have had the truffle pizza before and it was great, this time 100% meh. The cushions were also stained and the ambiance felt like an airport Hyatt. I guess Hyatt now owns/manages the property so maybe that's why. By far the worst $200 lunch I've ever. read more
