I started heading back to my Airbnb when I noticed this warm-looking bar where an employee was smoking near the door. I read the words "jazz club." I heard music and went inside, where I spent an hour listening to Billie Holiday and no one else sing the blues and then some. Novecento has at least 3 rooms; I only saw the first. It's a nice old-seeming bar. The employees speak some but not much English. The bar's booze selection is somewhat limited; I recommend going with wine if you aren't a whiskey person. I ordered a margherita pizza. It was fine, but too overcooked to be of my liking. The sauce was yummy, the cheese was good, but the crust only so-so from what I could tell. Prices weren't bad. This big band soul would certainly return to Novecento. An American bar was perhaps the perfect last stop on my trip to Italy.

We booked a two-night stay at the Novecento for April 18-20, 2023. The Novecento holds itself out…read moreas a boutique 3-star hotel and advertises that its rooms have air conditioning. However, the room was hot and humid overnight, and the air conditioning would not turn on. We had to open a window to cool down, which resulted in an influx of mosquitos biting us, because there was no mosquito screen on the windows. In addition, the bed was advertised as a "superior double" but was actually two single beds that had been pushed together. The two beds were not attached to each other in any way, so kept slipping apart. After an uncomfortable and mostly sleepless night, we decided to move to a different hotel. We wrote to the hotel to advise of the problems and request a refund, given the room was not as advertised. The hotel's response was dismissive from the outset. They first claimed that air conditioning is "seasonal" and they are not allowed to turn it on until June 1. When we advised that we could not find any evidence of a law restricting air conditioning, and that the hotel we moved to provided it, they admitted they choose not to use it. The hotel staff said "we have to coexist with" the mosquitoes, and claimed to have mosquito repellent machines in the rooms. The dozens of bites we received show that the machines were either not operating or ineffective. Regarding the bed, the staff claimed that it is "normal" to push two beds together to create a double bed. The above information is not on the hotel's website and was not provided when we booked. Had we known that air conditioning would not be available, and the only option would be to open the window and get bitten by mosquitos, we would not have booked this hotel.
