This was by far one of the greatest meals I've ever had in my entire life. The service was amazing. Every staff member we encountered was not just polite but genuinely friendly. The pumpkin flan was a true experience of sweet and savoriness. I couldn't stop eating the ratatouille; it was such a delicious treat. I was able to have a conversation with the chef after our meal, and she encouraged my excitement to experiment and try my hand at some of these dishes at home. I wish I lived in Venice, so I could have La Zucca regularly. Nicola and Saor were our hosts and kept our tables well served through and through. Saor ran us through the options and we ended up ordering the following: Green beans with almond, grilled fennel with walnuts, lentils and stuffed mushrooms. You really cannot go wrong with any of these as how they were severed though my personal favorite were the lentils and the fennel. Legit, the best Italian food I've ever had. We only ordered 3 dishes and each dish was unbelievable. La Zucca specializes in vegetarian dishes and if you use that information as guidance on what to order I guarantee you, you will not be led astray. This is also coming from someone who appreciates their protein. The best lasagne I've ever had and there's no meat in and no tomato. The pomodoro pasta was made with unbelievably fresh veggies and fruit. And the dish they're known for is their pumpkin flan which we ordered as if it were a dessert. All the dishes were somehow quite light, but jam packed with freshness. La Zucca is also located beautifully right next to a canal with lots of seats inside overlooking. They also have a handful of seats outdoors. The table seats are so cute attached to the building itself. Great atmosphere that's not too loud, but also not too quiet. The perfect balance. Although we were only in Venice for 4 days, we HAD to come back for a second visit and managed to snag a table right before closing. We ate here for dinner tonight. We ordered 3 dishes to share and all 3 were amazing! We had the curry chicken, lamb stew, and the vegetarian plate made up of several of their vegetarian side dishes. We also had 2 desserts--the brownies with whipped cream and dark chocolate pudding with mango sauce. I wouldn't rate the desserts as highly as the main dishes. I liked the brownies best of the 2. The brownies were a little dry and crumbly, however they still tasted good. The chocolate pudding with the mango sauce clashed a little in flavors. We were sitting in the front of the restaurant and noticed about 5 people who tried to get a table without a reservation. Unfortunately all were turned away because they were fully booked. In a word, bleah. I first visited La Zucca about 20 years ago. It was a charming restaurant in a great location with a very warm ambience and a menu that departed from the usual Veneto standards. Service was friendly and accommodating (it should be noted that I am near-fluent in Italian--the many English-speakers around us were struggling). All of these aspects are unchanged. The issue with this visit was the food. I started with the pumpkin flan, a signature dish on their menu. Pretty enough, and an enormous serving, but remarkably stodgy. I ended up giving half to my partner to eat. He'd chosen pasta with puttanesca sauce, billed as spicy but not even remotely so (but at least the serving was small enough). His second course of pork filet with ginger and bok choy was acceptable if unexciting. So little ginger (which he loves) that he didn't describe it as containing any at all until I'd prompted him. The real issue was my next course: duck breast. Served so overcooked (and, oddly, with the skin side down) that it both looked and tasted like a shoe. I've eaten (and prepared) duck breast many, many times, including at Michelin-starred restaurants, and this was unquestionably the worst ever. Had it not been for the orange garnish, I would have questioned it even being the correct dish. I considered sending it back to the kitchen, but one is eating on the clock here: a 7:30 reservation means that you will be handed your hat and shown the door no later than 9:30. So I ate it. And indeed, despite having unsuccessfully tried to flag down a waiter for our bill at 9:25, we were presented with the bill at 9:32 with the entirely unnecessary explanation that they needed to turn the table. Not only will I not return, I will actively discourage others from dining here. Almost all their business is well-heeled, educated tourists who are being deceived by surface appeal and glowing reviews. read more

When I think about food in Venice, this is the spot I will remember and recommend. There could be a few reasons. I tried twice, prior to this visit to get a seat and there was no place ( it is small!) When I finally acquired a seat, I just happened to be walking by after a morning and early afternoon of Museum hopping. The wait, perhaps even the anticipation was worth it. The Pate appetizer was beautiful. Served with the required crusty bread, pickles, radishes, olives and grape tomatoes, it was as visually appealing as tasty. For my entree, I asked the waiter if he recommended the Lamb or the Rabbit. He stated, that for him, the Rabbit is his choice. Great call. The meat fell off the bone, but retained its perfect flavor. Cooked with yellow and red peppers and olives, it was a Mediterranean treat. Could it get better? The dessert was the perfect finish. Chocolate Semifredo with a Black Cherry liqueur finish. So nice! I had one of my favorite dinners in Venice here at La Zucca. The manager or owner was very patient and helpful explaining the menu options. Some of the most memorable dishes were the artichoke hearts, the pumpkin lasagna and the pumpkin flan appetizer, a beef cheeks stew that we can't remember the name of and the Tagliatelle With Lamb Ragu. ALWAYS wander away to where the sound of the water is louder than the squabbling of the tourists -- it is there that you will find something worth eating. My husband and I stumbled across La Zucca on Yelp while in Venice, and although we arrived about 20 minutes prior to their kitchen closing, they graciously seated us outside where there was, thankfully, a summer breeze. We ordered the pumpkin flan, which looked like a slice of orange pound cake, smelled like hot pumpkin soup, and tasted like rich, cheesy, pumpkin bread pudding with the consistency of a souffle. After licking our spoons clean, I ordered the lasagne with artichokes and pumpkin flowers, and my husband had the tagliatelle with lamb ragu. WOW. WOW. WOW. Rarely am I so besotted with anything vegetarian (save for desserts), but this lasagne with its thin slices of creamy artichoke, surprisingly savory orange pumpkin flowers, solidly soft (how?) green lasagne noodles, and sprinkling of flavorful mozzarella absolutely won me over. For once I stopped eating off my husband's dish and concentrated on my own. So good. So good. So. Good. As for the tagliatelle and lamb ragu, it was appropriately light in sauce and perfect in ratio between all the ingredients. "I really liked my tagliatelle," my husband said when I just asked him. So there you have it. He really liked it. (A dancer from Sweden who travels across Europe to attend exhibitions and choreograph - hello, this mini Julie-Andrews-esque woman clearly knows her culture - was seated next to us, and she told us time and time again that this was one of her favorite restaurants to eat at whenever in Venice for shows. La Zucca might have been the first Michelin star restaurant that I've dined. It was a casual atmosphere. Nobody was pretentious and everybody was humble. We started our meal with a beef carpaccio over arugula salad with raw mushrooms. I think the beef was lightly marinated giving it a slight tang. I liked the earthiness of the salad and it was served with a lemon to add some zest if desired. For our next course, we shared the pumpkin flan and tagliatelle with tomato sauce and fresh ricotta. The pumpkin flan is one of their signature dishes and a must order. It's topped with shredded cheese and pumpkin seeds, and then it is drizzled with olive oil. Savoriness and warmness were prevalent. It was surprisingly appropriate on a hot August day. The pumpkin flavor was prominent, yet it was not a overwhelming. The tagliatelle was outstanding. The freshly made pasta along with fresh sauce and fresh ricotta was simple yet perfect. This is the type of dish that people come to Italy for. For our main courses, I opted for tongue served alongside cabbage and a steamed artichoke. The tongue was perfectly tender. It cut apart with a fork but stayed together otherwise. It was served with a flavorful mustard to add a little kick. The mustard with tongue would have been an outstanding deli sandwich :p The artichoke was ultra soft. I've never had it prepared like that before where I didn't have to scrape the edible part off with my teeth. My girlfriend had the lamb ribs which were excellent as well. There were served with some tzaiki sauce for a little extra flavor. After she finished, I made sure there was no meat left on those ribs! We finished our meal with a slice of chocolate cake. It was very light and airy. If I could drink coffee in the evenings, then I definitely would have enjoyed a cup with the slice. We had a very reasonable priced bottle of barbera from 2013 and it came from the nearby Piemonte region. The bottle was 27€ and was well worth the price. La Zucca is a must stop in Venice! read more

Great vegetarian options although it's not labeled as a vegetarian restaurant as they have meat dishes. We started with the burrata which was sooo creamy and mild-- I loved it. It's paired with mixed vegetables that is marinated with olives. Although I don't like pickled olives, together they pair very well and balance each other. I had the zucchini lasagna which was so creamy and light. Pasta was chewy and delicious. Overall the lasagna was very light and easy to eat. The pumpkin flan was very interesting, I personally didn't love it as I didn't like the purée texture. However, it's lightly seasoned and would taste good for pumpkin lovers. We finished with the lamb with Cous cous. Overall dish was very mild and loved the the yogurt sauce combined with the light cous cous.
