Although I sympathize with the other reviewers in that they did not get the full truth about their dogs, this is a rescue organization, not a breeder.

We we told our pup was healthy from the rescue/Vet, we still took the pup to our regular Vet after bringing him home. It turns out, he still had fleas AND had a bad ear infection (and no medication was administered for it). Neither of which were addressed during the rescue's in-take and during his care/time at the farm. After another week... and we found live worms in our pup's stools and immediately had to buy more medicine for tapeworms. I read previous reviews saying similar experiences (but given they were anywhere from 1-2 yrs ago I thought this might have been addressed with the time that had passed), but no as of Nov 2024 these are still very valid conditions to be aware of. The animals need to be further tested and treated during the adoption process (and really should be done during a quarantine period to avoid it being a constant cycle at the Farm). To add to the issue, we have other pets at home, so, unbeknownst, introducing fleas and worms to the rest of our gang, plus remediation, was very frustrating. We've also asked for the formal rabies certificate, as well as the tag... and feel like the request goes ignored. They only hand wrote in a Rabies # on the adoption paperwork which doesn't seem very valid. I'm sad I have to write a "bad" review, because we'd like to believe the rescue's intetions are in the right place. But I hope FKAR considers these similar comments/complaints going forward to truly ensure they are adopting out healthy animals.

We adopted a dane/lab mix from Almost Home last year. I really appreciated the foster-to-adopt…read moresystem they have to give you a clearer idea of what the specific animal is all about. I've had dogs my whole life and when I filled out their paperwork I was of the opinion the only reason I might return a dog would be aggression or if my personal financial situation changed dramatically. The fostering system gave me a much better idea of what I was committing to in this case. My wife, kiddo, and I all came to meet the dog we thought we wanted and after that went well we took her home. It became immediately clear that this girl had not been indoors or socialized very much, if ever. I was very surprised to have essentially a 70lb puppy on my hands. This was more work than I expected, and it was more work than my family expected, but knowing we had time to work with her as a foster in our home environment provided a lot of confidence in seeing how it went. Almost Home was in regular contact to check in with us and provided us with enrichment toys, advice, and resources for taking her to training classes. There was never pressure to keep her, and it was always clear everybody was only interested in what was best for the animal. After a few weeks she was improving, but still more work than I expected, and Almost Home was happy to let us continue to foster until everybody was sure this would be a good fit. Our girl kept improving and we committed to the adoption. Eventually we were able to return our home to normal, and do so free of concerns things would be destroyed. The time and space that was provided to be sure this would all work out resulted in one of the best bonds I've ever had with a dog. We're inseparable these days, and we owe it to the support Almost Home and their volunteers offered throughout the process.

Other cats are in condos which are 3 story containers that cats can go up and down in and still be away from the other cats. These cats are waiting for the "all clear" from the medical checkup, or they might be very shy and not ready for the other cats. Other kitties have other homes depending what their reasoning is. The goal is to get everybody into the free range area. But all of the cats that I have talked about are able to be adopted, no matter where they are in the shelter. There is also a viewing room if the kitty you want to meet is in a container. The ones that are free do not go into the viewing room. There is so much more to talk about. There are many volunteers and the 2 people that do the adopting out, Michael and Linda, are so terrific. They explain every question you may have. And they make sure every cat and every person stays safe and happy. And all of the complete paperwork gets done and together when a cat is adopted out. Best shelter ever.

I had the pleasure of coming in to an event where we returned unclaimed cash valued at over $200,000 that was being held in the states unclaimed property section that was left by a lake county resident So great to be here and help out the shelter and these beautiful dogs and cats Remember fur babies are gifts to us and deserve the best. If you can, please come by and take a fur baby home for the rest of their life. They deserve to be loved and spoiled

The lady we spoke to was very nice to us, as well as when we arrived (both her and the other gentleman working there). The front-desk is a bit small and crowded with supplies (I think from the supply donations they receive), but we were allowed to take the pup out in the large gated yard to run around and play and get to know her a bit more. The application process was fairly straight forward. They hand-write out the paperwork so it took a little bit longer, and they only accepted cash (we had to run to our local bank during the application). They do have a 7-day return policy (if the pet doesn't work out you can return them, or exchange for another, but no refunds) from what I understood. They also gave a health voucher for one of the local vets, but we did not use it and went to our regular vet. I saw other reviews claiming the pets weren't as healthy as they said, but at least for us, when we took the pup to our Vet, she was 100% clear and healthy (including all worms and such, which is sometimes overlooked in the exams). All of her shots / spay / flea treatment dates etc. were recorded and provided to us, plus microchip info, so it was thorough. They also gave us the rest of the kibble they were feeding her, which actually lasted us about 2 months. Overall, we thought they were friendly and also showed they cared for the animals that they adopt out. I don't think they have tons of dogs and cats, but they are worth considering if you are looking to adopt!
