I've been a loyal customer of this shop for many years, which makes my last two experiences especially disappointing. In April, I arrived for a scheduled 9:00 AM appointment at the N. Tryon location only to be told they didn't open until 12:00 PM, requiring me to drive back across town to the other location. More recently, I returned for a braid touch-up. No price was provided when I booked the appointment, and the text confirmation listed only the service. I was then charged $150 to redo the front of a style that originally cost $250. When I expressed my concern, the manager insisted the price was included in the text, which it was not. My issue isn't necessarily the charge itself, but the lack of transparency, communication, and consideration. The braider I had could not braid. The braider next to her could not braid. All I wanted was 4 straight back braids and she could not execute. After 2 hours I asked for 2 braids with a side part. When I tell you I just had to settle and get out the shop. The 2 braids didn't even last a week. The girl next to me was getting orange box braids which on its own is hideous but her braider could not tuck. She had short black hair peeking out from the orange. It was a mess. When the girl finally looked up from her phone and looked in the mirror the look of disgust on her face was heartbreaking. She got up and left after They took the hair out her head. I visited this location and got boho braids done and this was the worst braiding services I have ever received. The part were extremely big for medium sized braids. I didn't realize until leaving the shop the braids were uneven. After completing the braids the young lady dip the hair in hot water but did not put mousse or gel or any type of spray. She just dried the braids and that was it. Do not visit this place for their braiding services. read more

I have been to this salon 3 times. 1st time I got twist. 2nd time I got box braids which lasted me almost 3 months. My last & most favorite style is the tree braids & everyone loves it. Especially my man he really loves this style in me. I think I'm going to stick to the tree braids because of the versatility. I have never been disappointed. I went to buy hair at the supply store and was unsure what I needed for my style. The lady was really nice and told me to go to the salon next door so they can look at my styles and help me pick hair. They need a receptionist with people skills! A lady "greeted" me asking if she could help me when I came in. She turned away so quick I didn't even know who it was talking. I had to ask three times..When I did figured it out  she said "you have to make an appointment to find out the price" and  she kept doing hair. I told hair I wasn't concerned with price I just wanted to know if they could do the style, and told her I will find the style she said OK and I did. I came back to her and she went back to talking about the appointment but was very nasty talking rude in front of the other customers and stylists. I said her nevermind that's OK and started to leave. She kept talking so turned around and told her the lady next door told me to come over and you would help me. She kept getting ruder. Absolutely the WORST service! My daughter was very excited about getting her hair braided after not being able to get braids for 5 months because of dance. After 5 days 3 box braids had already come out and the rest were frizzy and loose. I called and scheduled an appointment to replace the missing braids. There was no braider available when I arrived at the scheduled time. We waited an HOUR for them to find someone to come in to replace my daughters braids. Once a braider arrived she looked at my daughters hair and could not comment because she immediately saw that the braider did a HORRIBLE job - her facial expressions were priceless. She removed all of the braids and instead of us sitting for another 4-5 hours for box braids we asked for 5 big feed braids to the back ($80 - less than box braids). After speaking with the receptionist (whom the owner deflected the call to) she decided not to refund the difference of the feed braids and the box braids nor provide a credit for a future service. We WERE frequent patrons of Bignon's over the past 5 years (3 of us) - never left without paying over a $100 for braids. We will NEVER return! Unfortunately Christine the owner of this establishment does not value customer relationships, time, or her reputation - only the money she can take from you. If I could give zero stars I would. I have visited this salon numerous times and each time was ok. Well a month ago I went in for braids and was satisfied. Recently I went in for a touch up because I needed my braids to look fresh for a work conference. I went in with long braids and came out with an uneven disaster. The stylist cut my braids when she was not suppose to and my braids started to unravel. She also made them huge and they did not match the original size that I paid $200 for. Some of the braids that she cut to redo she never did them and I had extra short braids hidden in the back. I asked for a refund and they refused. I will not be returning, they say they can do a lot of styles and when they're done it's the opposite of what people Ask for. One lady was so mad bc they made a mess out of her daughters hair. Too expensive to be so unprofessional. I have no problem paying for QUALITY service but this was not quality. The girl that did my hair had such an attitude. It took them 12 hours for box braids and I started braiding my OWN hair and she thought it was funny. A few weeks later I came back for a few touch up braids and they charge per row. Ridiculous. It's not worth it. They talk about you with you being right there in another language, unprofessional and I believe in energy. I don't want anyone's bad energy intertwined in my hair. We waited for someone to say can I help you for approximately 10 minutes. I love getting my hair braided here. I only go to Kristy who is the head stylist and shop owner. I like getting Tree Braids and she's the only one who does them in her shop at this location. I will continue to go back here for Tree Braids for sure. The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because it's mainly a braiding salon and not so much a salon where you can get basic hair maintenance done (trim, shampoo/ condition, etc.). I will be learning how to do that all myself so that way when my hair is braided it's being protected the right way. Still a great place. read more

I got Tree Braids for the first and she hasn't even finished with my hair and they look amazing. So I wanted to go somewhere close to my home and someone told me they were pretty good. Red flag one: lady told me my hair was too slick and short( which is not true) and I need to go smaller 165.00. I decided to listen to her. Red flag two: she started combing my hair with a small tail rattail comb and pulling it. Then the hair she was using to braid with was not divided evenly. As a matter of fact it was all over the place. Red flag three: when she started to braid she stopped in the middle of the braid about three minutes to check her phone. Red flag four: she left and went outside and I had no idea where she was going. Eventually I found out she went to borrow some hair from next door I guess. Red flag five: she checked her phone again. Final flag: she started braiding my hair and it was a mess!!! She told me my hair that was sticking out of the braids would have to be cut! What my real hair. Ummmm lady no! I chose this hair braiding salon, because it was close to my house, and they are well known throughout Charlotte. I should have walked out the door when we started negotiating the price. I brought my own hair. The "braider" informed me I could not get the cheapest braid they had, because my head wouldn't look right with that size and my head wouldn't be as full, so she told me I had to get a smaller size. This size was $165 plus she said since I wear my hair natural (twa) I would have to an extra $40. I let her know my hair wasn't that much longer than what she saw, but she said the extra $40 was not about how long my hair was they charge all naturals extra because they have to braid past the hair and they don't have to do that with relaxed hair. They gave me a $30 discount for bringing my own hair. Everything was going fine, until another women showed up to braid the back of my hair. She braided just a little bit before she was called over to do another women's braids. Her and the girl braiding my hair decided they would switch up, the new lady would braid the back of both heads and the first girl would braid the front. To make a long story short. I was floored two weeks later to find in the back she made bigger parts with the same amount of weave, making my hair less fuller than it should have been, and she didn't braid all the way down like she charged me for. I learned a lot from this salon. I'm never going back, and I feel like this entire salon chain is a scam. I can't wear me hair down because I'm used to my braids being very full. It was a waste of my money. Please do not go to this salon. They will try and scam you for whatever they can. I even told the lady she was braiding awe fully fast in the back. She dismissed my clams, and hurried up and put my hair on a ponytail without me reviewing her work. I made the mistake of not addressing the issue before I left, but I took one for the team, Your Welcome. Just don't go here especially if you have natural hair. read more

I would not go anywhere else! I moved to Charlotte in 2002. I visited a few places,that I did not return to. I found Christy in 2005. At first I had to travel all the way to N Trying, but it was well worth the trip. I live not to far from Carrowinds, and so I was elated when she opened the S Tryon location. Christy and her Employees are great! They are excellent braiders, weavers and stylers. When ever I leave the salon, I feel like a new woman. Since I first started going here my hair has grown so much. Once I wanted micros and Christy cut my hair even though she didn't want to. She did it because I wanted the micros and I asked her to. My hair is healthy and will be back to the length it was, in no time. They explain what they can do with your hair and tell you your price range before doing your hair. Christy and the other ladies not only do great hair, but also do great things for the community, like backpacks for kids at the beginning of school year. I have recommended them to many of my friends and co-workers and continue to do so. read more

Lucrese, known as Lu-Lu at the shop, did a phenomenal job with my box braids in September! She was professional and attentive in meeting my needs as a client. This was my first time getting braids in years and I was a bit nervous and skeptical of the outcome. Within 2.5 hours Lu-Lu washed, dried, and braided my hair. There was another braider as well who assisted. I would highly recommended this shop and the braider, Lu-Lu, when you're ready to get your hair done! Upon looking for hair braiding places in south Charlotte I stumbled on Bignon's. I went in on a Saturday and the manager offered a coupon for $15 off any style over $85 which I thought was a good deal. So I decided go in on Wednesday to get my hair braided. (the reasonI went in the first place). First I'd like to say the quality of my braids were impeccable and the process was fast. (the reason for at least 2 stars) When first arriving at Bignon's on South Tryon I noticed the stylist was not the warm and friendly type. I was a little put off, but I also know that they are there to do a job. As I sat down to get my hair done I requested that the braider did not braid my hair too tight. Unfortunately, my braids were tight and were very tight the first couple of days I had them.They also cut my natural hair coming out of the braids and they didn't even ask if it was okay with me. I cringed! When they finished and paid for my hair I completely forgot my coupon. I could not return that day and I asked one of the employees if they would honor my coupon if I brought it in the next day. She said that's fine. I came in the next day and she said we can't honor the coupon. I felt extremely confused and disrespected. I felt the employee went back on her word and should have just said no the first time. I contacted the manager from the North Tryon branch and she told me the same thing that they could not honor my coupon. As a result of my experience, I was not able to give a positive review and spread the good news about this establishment. I went to the S. Tryon Street location and I was NOT PLEASED with my hair!! I asked for senegalese twists but instead was given a huge head of braids that looked more like a combination of jambo or havana twists! I asked for senegalese twists at the $185 size and unfortunately that is NOT what I got! The braids I was given were thick, heavy, ropey, uneven in the back and the braids were so thick that I couldn't even gather them in the back to make a ponytail! I have had senegalese done many times before in another state and I have NEVER experienced this! Also the senegalese braiding technique that they use is to braid the hair at the root with big knots and then about an inch down to start twisting- THIS is a bad result because it doesnt allow for a flat sleek look but instead leaves a bulky, tight non flexible result thats hard to work with! Most of the stylists there were very rude and arrogant, in particular the stylist that did my hair, Sara, had a terrible attitude from the beginning- so I should have known that things would not go well. Before she started my hair, I asked her not to braid my edges tight and all she did was laugh and make a sarcastic remark! Once my hair was completed I told her I was not satisfied and she became very upset and made nasty comments regarding me not liking my hair! I have never ever been to a salon where it is acceptable to treat clients in this manner. I am not sure if it is just at this particular location that this happens at, but I also witnessed several other customers leave out with styles that they were not happy with. BIGNONS @ S. Tryon needs to really figure out how to braid styles correctly! JAMBO twists and havana twists are NOT done in the same manner as SENEGALESE!! Also witnessed several other stylists come in talking negative about the owner in front of clients- very unprofessional! I will never go to this place again--- PLEASE do your research... I made two appointments online for my daughter for a Thursday morning at 9:30 and the other the following Saturday at 9:30. When we showed up on Thursday, the receptions stated that the braiders hadn't shown up and they needed to push the appointment for another hour. It was during a work day for me and took a ton o coordination to make this happen so unfortunately I could not accommodate the pushback of an hour. So my daughter had to wait until my husband could leave work to pick her up. Mind you it was an hour and no braiders showed up while she waited. In the interim, I told them to rebook her with my younger daughter. Well Saturday arrives and the exact same thing happened. There was no remorse or compassion. These people have a lack of business sense and I am surprised that they have two shops in Charlotte. I immediately cancelled my appointment and called around. I decided against filing a formal complaint because I told the owner I wouldn't. However, I would like to steer people away from this shop in the form of this review. I arrived 15 minutes early for an 8am appointment. No one started my hair until after 9am. I paid extra to have small twists with extra length and left with twists, 3x larger than I requested. I wish that I would've left the shop without paying and had them to pursue legal action against me, since they would not have a case in court. However, I am a woman of integrity so leaving that way was not an option for me. The owner can often be found saying that she wants her customer to be happy. This is false. She wants them to be happy as long as it does not involve her or her team taking any sort of responsibility, or a refund on her part. I got my hair braided Saturday, took them out on Sunday, (talked to her both days) and she only agreed to give me a partial refund after I threatened to take my complaints to the news and social mediums. Before that she offered me $15 off and then said she would do $20 off. She is quick to tell untruths and has her front desk staff (who are very sweet women) to do the same to cover for her as well. *Please note* I know that is a serious allegation and I would not say that if I did not have proof. There were several instances that I caught them covering for her ... about not being available and about the cost of the hair. I simply let it go so that I could get my partial refund. Seriously, just choose another shop and skip the drama here. You'll be happy you did. If you must go, be very specific about your expectations and watch the braider. This is not the place to read a book while getting your hair done. You'll look up and may have a nightmare on your hands. Good luck. read more

Never again! I am a professional and decided to utilize my time to take my daughter for box braids after I let my 16 yr old "play and do box braids two weeks prior in her hair." It looked nice and cost $15 (cost of hair and conditioner). Well thinking my daughter needed a professional, I took her here and they wanted to charge $165 and we eventually agreed on $120. Well after 3.5 hrs overall I though it looked good. Two days later my 16 yr old said "Mom she does not have all box braids in some areas it is braided to her scalp and will come out in a few weeks." I immediately drove over there and had them look at her hair and indeed they said they would fix them right then. I didn't have another 3 hrs and asked to return next week. I have yet to go back and her hair has been braided now 10 days and 3 braids have fallen out. Lesson learned, I really may just eat up the cost and time spent and never go back. I thanked my 16 yr old who I should have given $120 to in the first place at least she would have done box braids even if they would have been uneven, hers never fell out. Do not go, find someone who will care for your daughter's hair like you expect. I stayed in the salon with her and am insulted by the unprofessional work. Never mind the cops having to come to receive reports on customers who didn't pay and the ghetto channel I hoped my daughter ignored while getting her hair braided. read more
