We decided to try Imonay, intrigued by the authentic look of the place. The menu scotched to the wall, a few elderly Korean couples sitting in the back, and the radio playing in the background immediately made me feel like I was being invited into someone's home. Their menu was filled with comfort food, all reasonably priced. My girlfriend decided to go with the bibimbap, and I chose the Korean army stew. Both were delicious and warmed us up on that chilly March afternoon. The portions were large, enough to fill us up without making us feel heavy. I'm on a search for affordable bites! Imonay is among the most affordable Korean restaurants that I've come across in recent memory, nestled in Koreantown after all these years. We had two kimbaps with bulgogi & sausage for only $4 each, although each was small and thinly sliced into 6 pieces. The Korean army stew hotpot for 2 was $27 filled with classic fish tofu, mushroom, spam, instant noodles. I would add cheese next time for the necessary umami flavor. One of the amazing, affordable Korean restaurants available in Koreatown. It can get busy but I believe they take reservations. There isn't a lot of seating inside so making a reservation might be better. We walked in and were able to get a seat but we had a strict seating limit since someone else booked the table after us. We got the Korean army stew and a beef kimbap to share which was plenty for two people. Both were delicious and we only added up spending around $30. It was a little bit on the salty side, but no complaints otherwise. Portions were generous and we even had leftovers. The name of this place literally translates to "aunt's house" and their food really does taste home cooked rather than like restaurant food. We got kimbap and jjolmyun and while they didn't taste bad, they didn't taste that great either unfortunately. The kimbap was quite bland and dry - I wish they could have put some sesame oil on top which is the traditional way to make it. The side dishes were also extremely salty. It's been over a year since I came to Imonay. During university, I would always come here - even by myself to eat the kimchi fried rice and kimchi stew. Now I'm back after trying out the other tofu stew shops in the area. Imonay's price list hasn't changed since COVID which is surprising since 1. they're already cheap and affordable and 2. competitors in the area have increased their prices by a couple dollars. I got the kimchi stew and would have to agree with the other reviews. The broth isn't as flavourful nor rich as other shops like BCD or Tofu Village. It however came with a lot of ingredients including tofu, sliced rice cakes, japchae, bean sprouts, onions, and green onions. For $10, the price is appropriate for what you get which is a hot soup filled with lots of veggies that hits the spot. The side dishes included bean sprouts, pickled cucumber and chives, another pickled green veggie, and seaweed salad. Unfortunately, the seaweed salad went bad and was really slimy. We stumbled into this Korean restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. It was around 3pm and we waited about 15 minutes for a table. They only have 4 tables available for seating. The prices of the menu was very affordable and they had really large portions. There was no tax as well, even though we paid with a credit card. They also had a variety of side dishes and was very generous when we asked for refills. The food was alright, it was more of an average home cooked style meal. It looked like a family owned business with an elder couple in the kitchen. The noodles texture was good and tasted home made, but there wasn't much seafood in it. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try it because I just ordered some kimbap to go but I was pleasantly surprised with the kimbap. I ordered five orders and because they were packed, it took some time to make but that's alright because when I ate the kimbap, it was 100% worth. It's affordable, flavorful and just an overall great snack to share with friends. PBS is $6 for takeout (dine-in is ~$10), Bibimbap is $10, kimbaps $5. All tax-in. However, there is a reason. I ordered the Spicy Beef Soup, most of it was sprouts, very little meat. Broth was a tad watered down, not complex or particularly tasty, Bibimbap takeout had no meat - and I don't think there was any mention of this on the menu, so it was a surprise when I got home. Still a sweet and welcoming place, food is authentic Korean. But I've noticed a few slippages over the years. Want there yesterday. Their kimchi barely had any gochu garu. If you're going to serve bland kimchi, serve bbae-kimchi (white kimchi i.e. not red with chili). The menu selections have shrunk considerably. The panchan was meh. Hubby's yukkaejang had a good broth and a lot of kosari namul (burdock). It was the best thing on the table and delicious My salleongtang was deeply disappointing. The beef was tough and the broth was bland. They do give you rock salt and black pepper to add. I asked for gochu (red pepper) and even that didn't help. A small little restaurant located in Koreatown that's honestly very easy to miss, but is definitely a must try!! Having tried many restaurants in Korea town, this one definitely stands out for taste and affordability. There isn't much seating so it would be best to arrive early or avoid peak hours. We ordered the tteokbokki with ramyun and cheese add ons, as well as bulgogi kimbap. They have a variety of kimbap flavours and each serving comes in 5 pieces. The tteokbokki was delicious! The spice level is manageable (coming from a person who loves spice so take that with a grain of salt) and it was a good amount of food for the price. The rice cakes were perfectly cooked and the cheese helped to balance out some of that spice. I definitely enjoyed the bulgogi kimbap as well! Very simple yet delicious. Tip: dip the kimbap in your tteokbokki sauce!! The combo works so well together. If I were to comment on one thing, it would be that I found the seaweed layer a bit chewy. I love coming to this place. We have been ordering from here throughout the pandemic and continue to do so for pick up. The prices are SOOOO amazing and I really love their soups and stews. Affordable vegetarian Korean style "sushi" Gimbap. It is a Korean dish made from cooked rice rolled in gim--dried sheets of nori seaweed! The best part about Imonay is that it is $3 and freshly made! Definitely a great restaurant and I don't even know where to begin. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted politely and shown to the table. Tea and water was offered immediately from being seated. Decided to go with the hot pot pork bone soup with the Korean noodles. Side dishes arrived quickly with the gas grill set up. The grill pan filled with the pork bone soup arrived quickly after filled with pork ribs, noodles, potatoes. Most Korean restaurants that I have ordered the pork bone soup usually came with very little meat, but was I pleased with the amount of meat in this dish. The noodles were unique as I've never had this type of noodle before. The noodles help the soup flavor well and gave of a bit of a chew which was nice. Side dishes was standard, but the only draw back was that it was not an all you can eat side dish (not unlimited refills). Service was extremely attentive as a server came to watch the gas stove constantly to make sure the soup didn't dry out or boil out of control. It's a little family-run restaurant with barebones decor. I liked the quality of bibimbap, especially considering that they give you a choice of beef, pork, chicken or octopus. I haven't tried anything else on the menu, but I imagine it's pretty tasty as well. The sides were not my favourite ones, but it's ok. The first time I came here, I was not satisfied but then I decided to come back a second and had a better experience. Initially, I ordered the yakisoba and it did not taste like the traditional japanese yakisoba. It was really sweet and salty and there was too much sauce when it should be a stir-fry dish. Second time I came, I got their kal guk soo and they gave a lot like A LOT of noodles which surprised me. It was just white flour noodles with cucumbers and cabbage, sauce on the side. Walking in this place had a mom and pop vibe going on and the people working hard seemed to prove that. We ordered Rice Cake and Dumpling Soup To go. We are vegan and the server got us taken care of like it was no big deal. The price was super cheap for what you get and the portion size was very generous. Even ordering to go we were able to enjoy plenty of banchan with our meal, which I must say was fantastic. Im sure there is more if you eat inside as well. According to their signage in Korean - which translates to "Auntie's Kal Guk Soo (which is like pasta made from rice flour, flattened & cut by hand - similar to fettuccine noodles)" which implies that their Kal Guk Soo is very good. So I went in. I believe this to be a sign that it will be good - it's not GREAT but it's definitely good - I have tried a few different dishes there and they have been delicious. The service was a bit on the slow side but, no complaints. it's nice and tidy inside, and I love the hand written chalkboard menu. What I thought was kinda funny was their menu is glued to National Geographic Magazine!!! Somebody took me here after researching korean restaurants that a vegan can eat at (so sweet, right?!). They even have a vegetarian menu at the front with all the meatless options (some are not vegan, so just be careful what you choose) The banchan were all standard, and the girl working was extremely sweet and caring. She told me specifically which ones were vegan friendly and which ones weren't, because if you didn't know, kimchi is NOT. She made sure to check on me several times throughout the meal, which was unnecessary but definitely a nice gesture nonetheless. The veggie dumpling soup I had was warm, filling and hearty. I loved it and was so happy to find a place that served vegetable dumplings!! That is seriously something I rarely find outside when eating.
