Came in on a Thursday night, wasn't too busy. All soups comes with rice and some small side dishes. We got combination and seafood soon tofu. Would recommend getting regular for those are okay with spic. Portions were pretty good. They don't have a lot on their menu because they are mainly known for their soups. Prefect for a rainy or colder day.
Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is a great place to get that cozy warm soup to fill the stomach. The servings are big and there have the classic Korean stone bowl experience. You get a bowl of purple rice and they fill the bowl with water to extract the last bits in a porridge to wash down the last of the main course. In the traditional style, you are served the appetizer/side dishes first, a combination of sprouts, pickled toppings, kimchi (sweet version), etc. Then the mains and rice follows about 5 - 10 mins later. The appetizer/side dishes can be reordered for free, just be respectful. For those with food allergies and restrictions, they were very clear on their online menu of the ingredients in each of their items, like beef, shrimp, mussel, etc. I ordered their Pork Bone Soup and it was great, lots of meat on the bones still, no small shards of bone in the soup and it was the right level of spicy/hot. Service was quick and attentive, seated and ordered in 5 min, with the side dishes out right after ordering and 5 - 10 min for the food. The restaurant has 2, 4, and bench seating on one wall. It looks like it can fit 30 or so patrons.
Delicious super hot food that comes out quickly. Only 3 side dishes but the kimchi is really good!! I tried the dumpling and beef soup and it was great.

I ordered Soon Tofu with zucchini, beef and mussels. The soup was very flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Rice in clay pot goes well with the soup. The set came with a small tray of three types of ban chan consisting of kimchi, bean sprouts, and sweet beans. Pork Tonkatsu was crispy and tasted average. The service was great and very efficient. For the rice clay pot, the staff would fill warm water to it after scooping out majority of rice to a bowl, so you can enjoy scorched rice with water at the end (it is better than the way it looks!). My husband enjoyed his spicy squid with rice. Very relaxed atmosphere. Would be great for either small or big party.
You can choose the level of spiciness of the soon tofu soup, which is great. But unfortunately the broth is a little watery. The one at the Tofu Village restaurant next door was way more creamy and tasteful but they unfortunately retired. The dim sums were meaty and good. Service was a little slow. A little bit cold and noisy in there.
When my friends heard I wanted Homestyle comfort food, they recommended this place, immediately. Not far by using TCC, we quickly found this unassuming but charming place. The service was quick and they give you free banchan refills. Hubby's bipbambop was good but he felt the egg was mass cooked and cut to adorn the top of his dish. My tofu soondubu came in various heat: none, mild, medium, and extra spicy. While I chose mild, it still has a lot of heat. For both our entrees, the flavors truly married together in the best way possible. Not one ingredient overwhelmed the other. At the end of my dish, they filled it up and I was able to scrape off the residual crisps from the rice and enjoy it further with additional banchans.
3 stars for me. It's been a while since I've been here. We managed to walk in and get a seat quite quickly. Decided to try the pork bone soup. The proportions for pork bone are well worth the money; however, I think this needs to be tweaked. Was not very flavourful-- overpowered with gochugaru and not a balance with gochujang. Meat felt slightly cold when it was given to me. Rice could be slightly less moist. Side dishes were good. For $17, not a bad place but would go back for tofu soup perhaps to give this place another try. FYI no more 10% off if you pay with cash -- only applies to takeout only.
Simple menu and excellent food. Finding a parking nearby can be a bit tricky, we turned around a few times before we found a spot. The food came pretty fast. We enjoyed the seafood tofu stew a lot. Extra spicy is not too spicy. The Korean BBQ Beef was very tasty. Their small dishes are not as impressive. Usually I'm pretty excited about the small dishes in a Korean restaurant, but I barely touched my this time.
BCDST is the best restaurant in Toronto for Korean tofu stew in my opinion and I've went to many restaurants. My favourite is the combination soon tofu (#1) and my not so favourites are the kimchi stew and the soybean tofu stew as I feel the other options are more flavourful. Still, the quality of this restaurant always holds up and you will get a very delicious hot pot of soup that hits the soul. I also love their purple rice but would loved it if I just ate the rice directly from the pot instead of having it separate. Will definitely return again.

Ordered the beef, Zucchini and replaced the mussels as I wasn't too fond of them. So I got extra beef instead. My gripe was the beef was very stringy and it was okay, not the best I had. Will come back and try the other menu including the pork bone soup.

The pot is left behind and filled with water by the server, where the remnants of rich are dislodged in a starchy broth, to be enjoyed later after the consuming the stew. The bibimbap is served in a hot stone pot and arrives at the table sizzling with generous serving of rice topped with with ground beef, sautéed squash, par boiled bean sprouts, spinach and carrot slivers and a fried egg. Yes, the egg was part of a community of like eggs that was sliced away from its brethren. Let the rice settle into heat to crisp up for a few minutes and start mixing away, adding the side of gochujang between stirs to flavor the bland dish. The soup is added at the end after all is gone to soften the crispy rice stuck on the bottom, giving you a brothy mix of softened crispy rice and soup. Service was good. The restaurant itself is not fancy. Natural wood floors with a slight tilt and tables are the decor with a station setup in near the entry way for staff to accommodate their take-out customers. BCDST is all about Korean comfort food. This was exactly what wifey and I needed after a long day of navigating the top tourist attractions of Toronto.
This place is one of my comfort restaurants. Their soft tofu stew always fills an empty part of my soul that I didn't know I was missing. I love the purple rice, all the small side dishes and their soup. Prices are fair for the amount of food you're getting. Just your typical Korean establishment with the best soup in tow.

We were craving Korean food during our trip to Toronto and found this place thanks to Yelp. It's a popular spot with a wait even on a weeknight, but fortunately it wasn't too long, about 15 minutes or so. We ordered the spicy squid with rice and combination soon tofu with hot stone pot rice. The spicy squid was yummy, flavorful, and hit the spot. The soon tofu was a bit on the bland side compared with the Korean tofu soups I'm used to in the L.A. area. They include banchan with the food. There was kimchi, bean sprouts, and beans. Service was attentive and very friendly. The restaurant is on the smaller side, maybe 10 or so tables. Overall it was a good experience and I liked the food, but would like to try other Korean restaurants in the Toronto area. read more

You can choose the level of spiciness of the soon tofu soup, which is great. But unfortunately the broth is a little watery. I get really disappointed when I see or experience dishonest business practices by a restaurant especially if it's your first time visiting this place. In Buk Chang, I have seen not only 1 but 2 things that are a big turn-off for me. First was the sign at the entrance of the restaurant saying that when you pay by Cash you get a discount. However when you want to avail of this incentive, staff will tell you that you have to pay the full amount of your bill regardless of how you're paying (cash or credit card). So the question is why do they have this sign and not honoring it. To entice customer or just being shady? Second thing I noticed is that on the menu (on paper and picture on the wall) you will see 4 banchan (small side dishes) but they only serve you 3. We ordered the Seafood Soon Tofu and I find it bland and has only 3 pcs of seafood. For $15, this is my least favorite dish and I don't think it's worth the price. Also ordered the deep fried pork cutlet and just meh. The only redeeming factor of dining here is a dish called Broiled BBQ Beef Hot Stone Pot Rice (Bulgogi). It's intensely flavorful and delicious. Sweet and smoky, it pairs well with the purple stone rice. Service is not bad but will think twice of coming back here since there are better Korean restaurants in the area. read more
Came here for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon. They have a nice patio with some umbrellas. The service wasn't too bad and we were seated right away. We were seated without an umbrella on a hot day, but the water served was cold so that helped with the heat. We both settled for #8 Bibimbap. Unlike other Korean places downtown Toronto, you don't get too many sides. You get a few (as pictured) with the meal. The bibimbap was AMAZING. The hot stone bowl is my favourite, the rice were crisp. I only wish they had given me more red sauce for the rice. If you pay cash you are supposed to get 10% off, however we didn't realize until later that the cashier didn't give us that discount. So heads up, make sure you ask for that discount or it won't be applied! read more
To be fair, I'm not a Korean food fan, and I went only as a compromise. The food is fresh, and portions decent. If you're into eating a pound of rice (which I'm not), and having some soup (which I would have preferred to be much larger in portion), then this would be a fairly expensive meal pound for pound of what you get, and have a satisfied tummy. I wouldn't exactly compare this to eating a pound of potatoes to have a cup of soup to accompany the starch as the filler. I would have much preferred more soup to immerse the leftover rice stuck to the rice pot versus being given a tub of water. The soup would have been monumentally more tasty but I respect the bottom line. read more
One of my fave places to have soondubu in Toronto! I've only had positive experiences here. The soondubu is always tasty and the service is awesome. They also have a variety of different toppings. I normally order the spicy seafood one, but most recently just tried the dumpling and beef one. Both amazing options!! It gets pretty busy because of how popular it is - every time I come, the restaurant is full. It's okay though because the wait times never last too long. Would definitely recommend if you like soupy tofu dishes! read more
Swoon worthy soondubu jjigae spot! Maangchi's YouTube vid brought me here to this location in Ktown so you already know its legit! It's all about the soft tofu stews here (it's THE item to order!) I would highly recommend either the #1, #2 or #3 combination (I usually get #1 since it's the best of all worlds) the tofu stews come out piping hot & full of flavour. Eating here always satisfies my soondubu cravings!! I love the hot stone pot rice that comes with it; it's a nice addition + portion & it's also purple rice! I wish that they would instead of pouring water into the pot rice pour hot tea instead though. In terms of the gamjatang (pork bone soup) I find that The Owl's version is bigger and better. Stick to the soondubus here! Service is fast & the two young male employees I always see are diligent & super hardworking. They work as if they're the owners family & def don't seem like regular employees or part timers. Good for them! Overall it's my go-to soondubu spot in Ktown! It hasn't disappointed yet! read more

I was craving Pork Bone Soup and this is one of my go-to places for soup. I ordered a pork cutlet for appetizer and the pork bone potato soup. Overall it satisfied the craving. For the pork cutlet, it was good but felt a bit dry and thin. The pork bone potato soup hit the spot! Meat was tender and came off the bone smoothly. For the service, I was seated pretty quick and they have ample time for me to look at the menu (even know I know what I wanted). They refilled the small dishes pretty quick, which is nice. In terms of the space, they are pretty clean. Very spacious and can seat a lot of parties. I would recommend this place to get pork bone soup cravings fixed. read more

There's nothing like hot stew on a cold day. Soon-dubujjigae is one of my favorite of many Korean soups. Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu has many locations around the GTA and their food is pretty consistent across all locations. Their stews come with 3 types of banchan: beans, kimchi and bean sprouts. I wish they would offer a few more to complement the stew but at least they have the basics. The kimchi soon tofu with beef and pork was generously filled with meat and toppings. The flavors are rich and spice levels are adjustable which I like. My only issue is that the service at their Bloor St. location is far worse than their other locations. Usually with Korean restaurants service is paramount, however maybe because of the influx of non-Korean diners, they don't feel the need to provide friendly service. A friend of mine also suggested Tofu Village next time for broth that has deeper flavor and friendly service, I'll have to review that next time read more

Great restaurant in korea town! The tofu soup was perfect! I think the rice was a bit too much for one person tho. I can't comment whether this restaurant is "local" enough because I'm not from Korea, but this tofu soup is certainly one of the best in Toronto!! If you're looking for Korean comfort food, look no further than Buk Chang Dong. This place with its neon green sign is hard to miss. Their consistent soft tofu soup makes it quite a popular spot in Koreantown. I find myself coming back often as it's a family favourite. There's more menu items but we always order the soft tofu soups, which come with rice in a hot stone pot. I prefer the kimchi soon tofu with beef and pork, and there's also dumpling, seafood and vegetarian options at any spicy level that you can handle. Side dishes brought forth are always the same: kimchi, bean sprouts, sweet beans and pickled radish which are simple yet satisfying. When the bubbling hot tofu stew arrives, crack open and drop in the small egg for extra savoriness. The multi-grain purple rice is scooped out of the stone bowl by a waiter (and he will add water to presumably clean the stone bowl of leftover rice). This distinct rice provides a good base for the hearty and flavourful tofu soup. The soup bowl may appear small initially but there's plenty of silky tofu and other goodness in that stew! BONUS: after chowing the stew and purple rice, the rice water in the stone bowl is actually ready to consume, in case you still have appetite post-meal. That's the fun part as I found the rice water goes really well with the side dishes! No one's going to judge if you go all the way and finish it too. Over the years, I've been to pretty much all of the Buk Chang Dong's in the GTA. This is one of the original locations but the tofu soups seems fairly consistent at every other location, which is definitely a plus when you're just seeking a warm bowl of Korean food. read more
Tried BCD for the first time and had the pork bone soup on the patio. The place is a typical Korean restaurant in Koreatown and felt clean and service was quick. The side dishes were refilled upon request & the kimchi was good! The Gamjatang (Pork Bone soup) here comes with stone bowl rice (purple in colour). The meat was well cooked and was falling off the bone as it should. The soup was flavourful. I asked for some Gochujang (korean hot sauce) on the side. The Gochujang was delicious and I highly recommend it. Will return in the future and try some of the Tofu dishes they are known for. read more

Haven't been here in a long time and from what I remember it has the best soon tofu in Toronto. I'm glad that it lived up to my memory and did not disappoint. The tofu was soft and the soup was so flavourful with a nice kick. The spicy pork definitely took me by surprise. It was different but in a good way. It was sweet and spicy. I also loved that it was so saucy! Definitely recommend this spot! read more

Friendly, attentive and fast service. Food was authentic in presentation and taste. We love purple rice! Beef dumplings crispy and delicious, perfectly fried. Soon tofu served bubbling - medium spicy not so spicy. Recommend ordering regular spicy if you like that added kick. Kim chi paired well with food. Sizzling BBQ beef platter good amount of meat. You cannot go wrong with Buk Chang Dong (BCD). BCD is one of my go-to spots in Koreatown for its sundubu (soft tofu stew). Named after a neighbourhood in Seoul, this simple and straightforward spot with only 9 items on its menu has other locations in the city, but this is the original location. There are 6 versions of sundubu to choose from, with a spiciness levels ranging from plain to extra spicy. My usual go-to is #1, the combination soon tofu (comes with beef, shrimp, mussels), at the medium spicy level which I find is the safest option and you get a bit of everything. The stew arrives hot and bubbling, and do not forget to crack the egg that arrives with it immediately into the soup, so it cooks in the bowl. Each order comes with a side of dolsotbab, which is purple multigrain rice served in a stone bowl. The server dishes out the rice, puts it into another bowl and then pours hot water into the stone bowl, loosening the leftover rice stuck to it. Most people eat this leftover rice at the end which has become infused with water (essentially soggy rice with water and in my opinion does not have too much flavour). Located at the corner of Bloor & Clinton with its bright green and yellow sign and walls painted bright orange, BCD is a must-try. The North York location is great as well. Overall a welcoming place to eat with efficient service and affordable prices. read more

The waiter asked me how spicy do I want it to be, I asked him how serious they are about their spicy level, and he asked where I came from then told me to go mild... haha maybe he thought only Koreans can eat super spicy? The portion is impressive!!! It came with a giant bowl of rice, and sizzling sea food tofu soup! They are gonna give u an egg, crack it in the soup right after the waiter put the pot in front of u! Don't wait! If for some reasons u missed that chance, u can always ask them to take the pot back to bring it back to boil! Mild is super hot spicy for me so I asked them to add more spice to make it super spicy, it was still not that spicy! Anywayz, the seats were really crowded and i had a hard time getting into my seat and getting out. read more
What I like: an interesting experience that rice is served in a hot stone bowl(dolsot) and the waiter would get the rice out for you and put water in hot stone as soup. The waiter came to our table and brought a big bottle of water along with the hot stone bowl. Originally I think the water is for drinking, but it is a way to create the rice drink. However, I found the food just average. It is family style Korean food. It does not wow me. Out of all the good food spots in Koreatown, I could not come deliberately for tofu soup. My friend and I came here because of all high ratings on Yelp. There are so many Korean restaurants to choose from in Koreantown, even for tofu soup. However, I do think the experience is interesting and the price is reasonable. However, I found the food average. read more
