This place is not run the way it used to be for many years now. My main issue are the bathroom toilets which are generally look like no one has taken a brush to them for over a year. I told the management a very long and even met with a manager and showed him a long time ago and nothing has improved. Otherwise I would give this place more stars. Update: I saw the response to my post ( to reach out to them ) and then saw the multitude other of reviews saying the same thing about how dirty the bathrooms are. After reading all those one and two star reviews. and knowing nothing has been done about these, this place obviously does not care at all. I've gone to In-Shape for the past 5 years and have watched it change a lot. At any point in time, at least one facility is broken, whether it's a pool, a bathroom, a machine, take your chances. The showers (at least the women's) are moldy. What really annoys me is the terrible hold/cancellation policies. For the past 5 years ive been reasonably satisfied with this facility. Recently, they changed ALL the TVs in the aerobics room to show only infomercials and sports. and game shows. There is no local news and weather, or cable TV shows and news. They have about 10 TVs, and they are all playing essentially the same boring content. The facility "Manager" didnt make this decision, according to him. It came from the corporate office, people who obviously dont use this gym and dont understand. You may as well remove all the TVs because nobody is watching them. Who in their right mind would want to limit or control what people watch to help get through repetitive exercise? Why would that even matter to you? Keep up the good work. Based on your ratings, there are a lot of other areas that need improvement. Customers like options and flexibility. Whatever you do, DO NOT JOIN IN SHAPE in Capitola. Literally pick any other gym in the area - Toadal Fitness, 24 Hour, Anytime Fitness, etc. For the amount it cost every month for bad customer service, dirty facilities, disgusting locker rooms, and the cheapest "towel service" you'll ever see is incredibly crazy. The men's locker room smells like bad body odor, the showers are rusty and smell like mildew, and the floors are literally soaked in puddles of brown water. The worst part is that I've been going to this place for 2 years hoping they would change. I have spoken to the management here and I've reached out to customer service like the "business manager" who comments on all of the 1 star post tells you to do - and NO change has ever been made. I have been an in-shape Member most of this year, unfortunately I had a terrible experience at the beginning of this month. I called in to see if it was possible to put a hold on my membership, granted this was at 11am on the 1st of October. I expressed that I understand if It was too late as it was already the 1st. I was informed by a newer staff member that she wasn't able to put a hold unless I came in. She put me on a hold and said she talked to a manager and told me to come on by. I expressed that I don't have a car and it was a bit of a journey to come in but I was willing to avoid a $140 charge. Upon my arrival an assistant manager told me it was too late to put a hold on it. This was very frustrating as I expressed understanding if it was too late but was told to come in anyway. I gave my number hoping to talk to a manager but haven't had any response. I've enjoyed my time at in-shape but I will be cancelling my membership due to this experience. If someone had reached out with an apology it would have been different. read more

(Semi-guest) review Sunday June 1st 2025, 630am. Spacious, older well maintained gym near the ocean in the Santa Cruz area I have belonged to California family fitness in Sacramento for close to 20 years and a few years back, that chain merged with in-shape fitness. They have/had wildly different business models. When I read the reviews and saw the 2.5 stars on yelp, I was a bit cautious. From a frequent and varied gym goer, this is not a 2.5 star gym, it is a 4.5 star gym. It feels like "The grass is always greener on the other side" reviews. The only validation I can give to the reviews is that this gym is older and the bathrooms could use a serious make over. Think "saved by the bell" colors and era. I am always a bit hesitant to read too much into complaints about management because I haven't had had to cancel a membership in my adult life. This gym has two parts to it (separated by an outdoor walkway and has a separate scanner for entrance) and both sides are essentially complete midsize gyms by themselves (about the size of an anytime fitness or fitness 19 gym). Both sides have weights, cardio and a full locker room. It looks like 8-10k square feet or so of cardio equipment machines and free weights combined. The equipment is a mix of precor, hammer strength and matrix (so all average or better stuff). Bonus items about this gym, lap pool, and outdoor functional (CrossFit friendly) fitness area. It also has towel service, and an attached parking structure! If you read the (other) reviews and are a bit hesitant, please stop by and check it out for yourself. Second day visit on Monday. I started out my review by saying it was a 4.5 star location and I have to drop the half star down to a 4 because my experience on the second day. The first day was legs day on the side gym and the second day was chest day on the main gym. I know this gym is close to the ocean, but new bars are needed. They are fairly rusted so that plates stick and cause an issue when loading and unloading the bar on bench. Also an underrated safety issue is that the j hooks on the bench and incline bench aren't square. This makes it really hard to be safe when you're getting the bar up. If you're doing 80-90 percent of your max, being not square puts unneeded tension on your joints and shoulders. Not cool, super easy to drop a bar on your neck. Lastly, the sauna situation. The dry sauna takes a long time to heat up, especially whenever the door opens. So if a sauna user has 3 people enter in 12 minutes, half the time the temp is under 120 f. I had to drive to CA for a wedding and family visit. I stayed at my sister's house in Capitola for a week and and needed a place to workout. I called I Shape and spoke with Josh. He told e I could get a three day pass so I arrived at the gym around 4:30 AM. Josh Deago were working the front desk. I'm a nobody visiting from AZ, but the way I was treated, you'd have thought I was from the Royal Family. It's rare to receive service like this anywhere and especially at 4:30 AM. If I were the owner I'd give Josh and Deago raises to be certain they don't leave. Employees with their customer service skills are hard to come by. I read some of the reviews nick picking a few paper towels on the floor and some dirt in the shower. All gyms can suffer from thst I watched the members and noticed the majority picked up after themselves and cleaned the equipment. The equipment was fine, it had everything I wanted to use. Just canceled my membership after being on hold for six months and they are still stealing another month's worth of fees because of the fine print in the agreement. When putting the account on hold you're led to believe it is like the 30 day notice required in the agreement, but it is not and even if you haven't been there in half a year, they will suck another month's worth of fees out of you. I spoke to the assistant general manager and general manager and both said they wouldn't do anything. I get the impression the corporate office doesn't empower them, even as general managers to do the right thing by their members. I knew about the 30 day requirement and would have just given that instead of the hold, had I known at the time. read more

Honestly I'm not surprised that I'm back again to say nothing has changed! After months and months go by this place has not even taken a hint with all there bad reviews? I've been a member of this club on/off for about 5 years. Let's start with the good. They have amenities that some of the other clubs/gyms do not. The hot tub, Steam room and sauna. Along with plenty of equipment, well as frequent classes. Let's face it, options are limited in Santa Cruz and it's common knowledge... That said...every inch of the place always needs deep cleaning. There are literally flies, yes, flying bugs thriving in the ventilation and drainage systems! The steam room and sauna are rarely cleaned and if they are you can count on it being out of service "Until further notice!". I understand the standards for the gyms in Santa Cruz are very low but that doesn't mean people should be taken advantage of as if the $80/month per person doesn't cover the cleaning and maintenance costs. The hot tub, steam room, and sauna are closed often and the staff insists on writing the notices of closure with exclamation points. The most recent and current sign states: "Steam room is closed! Until further notice!" Kinda sounds like: "Shut up and pay me!". Just sayin...On that note the customer service staff has no expectations of being friendly. The gym definitely needs a cleaning. Men's restroom and showers are not clean. I've watched homeless people walk in and take showers. The homeless also come in and collect cans out of garbage cans. The gym next to grocery store has a new scan method at front door to scan cell phone app to let you in but the kids just sneak their way in without paying membership. This place has horrible customer service. Just requested to cancel my membership, and with no update on possible charges and fees they have charged my card $215, even though I appealed the request. I have tried to get in contact with someone several times but manager is not there and nobody will call me back or respond to my emails. Do not go here! yep, I agree with every negative comment ...absolute truth. I watched a guy work out barefoot one day. The lack of concern, about anything, from the youngsters at the front desk is the first red flag. Sad to see how us seniors are treated. The club is filthy, always, and when vacuuming is done (saw it once in 4 months) it's during a busy time. It was lovely to inhale all the dust particles flying ....and well, the noise was just great. InShape in Capitola is inconsistent in terms of quality. There had been problems with the inside pool for weeks, then it closed, after which it opened again with some good, then some bad days. On Monday, April 6 the water was comfortable, the next day it was really cold. Either the equipment can not be properly repaired or they are trying to save money by lowering the temperature. Either way is bad business. You are lucky if everything is working in that area, hot tub, pool, etc. It all should be working with rare exceptions. Cleanliness also leaves something to be desired. read more

This gym is a complete piece of shit. Something is always broken here whether it the steam room, sauna, and even the POS system. I wanted to cancel my membership long ago but they convinced to keep it telling me I'd be grandfathered in at a lower price since I've been a member for a long time. That was BS, I'm getting charged the same as everyone else. They blatantly lied to me I should have canceled based on that alone but I decided to keep it anyway hoping I would find some silver lining. I did not. Their employees are rude, unprofessional, and inattentive! Especially the girl I spoke with today. She left in the middle of me talking to her. This is completely unacceptable behavior. Another huge issue is the gym is filthy and disgusting. Much of the equipment is missing pieces and/or they're difficult to find. Additionally, I've had a few security concerns they couldn't see anything with their cameras because they're complete dog sh-t. So if anything happens to you or your stuff here good luck! Finally, every time I try to talk to a manager they're unavailable. I understand they don't work today, that's not a problem but come on. I was told by one of the employees today credit card processing fees are $6 dollars, but on the website it clearly states $2.99. It's not about the money, it's about the principal. At worst these people are liars. At best they're incompetent or under trained. If you're reading this review ask yourself, why would you pay top dollar for a subpar experience? We don't have a huge selection here in SC but I assure you anywhere is better than here. I have convinced a few other people to go elsewhere and they love it. You will too. Don't believe me just read all the other one star reviews. Prior to me canceling my membership, I gave management the opportunity to explain things to me, they didn't even bother and the employees I did ask were uninterested in helping me resolve my issues. Wow, I was really shocked to see the condition of the Capitola InShape Club. I did a self tour today after a 12 year hiatus from theClub. It looks as though there has not been any new interior upgrades. In other words, the place looked very dingy. I inquired to see a list of workout classes, specifically for seniors. I was told that they "don't do printouts and I'd have to look on a screen." I was also told there "weren't any senior specific class and that all classes accommodate seniors." Clearly, I'm waving my Ok Boomer freak flag. It's too bad. This club is missing the mark, or shall I say wrinkle, esp. with the ever burgeoning senior citizen demo graphic. The age wave is upon us and there's no offerings for the older adult trying to maintain their physical "older" self. I couldn't be happier with my decision to join this gym. I shopped around for a while and finally found the top notch facilities to meet my needs. I've only been going for two months but everything has been super clean and the staff is super friendly, supportive, and knowledgeable. I even had the manager Zach help me with tips to reach my (admittedly beginner) fitness goals. It's honestly refreshing to have finally found a gym with modern/clean facilities, a non judgmental and supportive team, and everything you could possibly need to achieve your goals. Very disappointed with inshape in capitola,ca. My fiance went to check out this location to try it out debating whether to add it on to our current package for a different location and the staff or sales rep decided to change our membership immediately without confirming with my fiance did it without her consent and it caused my family to pay the new rates we lost our grandfather discount. I contacted this location and the assistant manager was unwilling to help he honestly sounded like he could care less. Do not go to this location they perform fraudulent transactions without acknowledging the customer and refuse to apologize or undo the changes we never asked for. Signed up primarily for the outside pool to do laps. Currently you need to reserve a lane and I've been signed up for a month and haven't been able to at all. It's always booked. Tried using the indoor pool and signed up for a time, got there and not only are they not giving towels out, their was an aqua aerobics class happening at the time I signed up. The ladies at the front check In were rude and it's just not very organized. They've moved most of the cardio equipment into the parking garage which feels super weird and apocalyptic. I just finally gave up on In Shape Capitola. The location and facility is good but it seems to have poor management. The younger people behind the desk seem like they want to do a deasant job for the most part. But everything is done through the App. The pool area and locker room is consistently dirty with no one around to help. Often times to staff behind the desk are too busy on their phones to say hello. The final straw today is when I got an email because my credit card didn't go through and they threatened to send my bill to collections. Still haven't received a response to my email. However, I did go swimming the other day, and the pool had green growths growing on the side. Water temp was pleasant. And ladies shower had a blood soiled towel on the floor from a rude customer, globs of hair balls in multiple showers, and mold growing in the grout (also around the hot tub. The gym's setup is great and great equipment but if the air quality is extremely poor, do to the fact of high levels of chlorine in the air, then there is a problem. I have been working out here for almost two years and in that time you can always smell the chlorine in the downstairs area; as you checkin, walk towards the men's/women's locker room (inside too), & in the rooms towards the back of the building. I do not know if several people need to complain about this for a change to happen but today was the first time my body could not take it. It has been over an hour since I left the gym and I can still feel the chlorine in my system. I did a heavy workout like always since the age of 13 and currently in my mid 30's, I know my body well enough. The chlorine levels are far too high and chlorine is a strong chemical that only needs a little to go a long way. But I am going off from what my body is telling me and this is something new that I have not experienced from this gym. I really enjoy this gym and what they offer but they need to change the fact that there is no ventilation system for the chlorine they use in the "wet areas" of the gym. I am so pissed off right now. You know why?.. Because i had to set my alarm because they're website open up at 12am.
