I had the opportunity to train at In Shape Fitness for the past three weeks while I was back in my hometown taking care of some personal matters. Andrew went above and beyond by getting both my son and me set up to use the gym, and I really appreciated the hospitality. The staff was friendly and welcoming from day one. The gym was always well kept and had a great flow, with all the equipment I needed to stay on track with my workouts. More than anything, there was a genuine sense of community that made it a great place to train. As an active-duty military member, I appreciate businesses that support a healthy community. As a potential member, I have never been treated like this before this evening I came in to the club to potentially becoming a member and the front desk was so unprofessional and unpleasant to deal with I feel so disrespected and embarrassed for the way this employee treated me. Their customer service is the worst. I've been trying to cancel my membership since October after finding out I was pregnant and I am unable to workout at the gym. I've tried contacting In Shape with the app and through e-mail and it took me a few tries to reach someone who finally told me that I needed to submit a proof of disability signed by my doctor to successfully cancel my membership and not have to pay an early termination fee. As soon as I was able to see my Dr, I sent In Shape the note saying that I am unable to continue with my membership. After that, crickets. I had to keep following up with my request because I was still getting billing e-mails and mail and it was stressing me out. I sent them several follow-ups and the only time I actually received a reply was when I mentioned that I would be writing a review. They said corporate will waive the $75 early termination fee since I had my proof of disability and I just need to settle the remaining balance, so I waited for an update on my final fees so I can settle it. Well 2 months later, I am still getting billing mail from In Shape. I had to e-mail them again to ask for an update regarding my fees and they told me corporate would not be waiving the $75 after all and I need to pay $119 to cancel my membership. I wish I read other reviews regarding In Shape customer service before signing up because this issue is causing me anxiety just having to deal with it every month over such a simple issue. I advise anyone to be cautious when signing up for long term memberships with this gym. read more

It seems to me that a profound shift has occurred since In Shape Family Fitness completed the acquisition of California Family Fitness. My latest experience is that the level of care by the customer service staff to the members has declined. The predominant interest is taking our money, but not providing the level of service we've come to appreciate since we originally join California Family Fitness. It's possible that we are even being charged more than some members who came in through the In-Shape brand for the same level of service. Not only are we being duped for more of our hard earned money, but we are being treated punitively if an event occurs in which our payment isn't timely collected by the club. This complaint is purely financial. (This has no bearing on the quality of service we have come to enjoy from the class instructors and training coaches, which still remain some of the most unsurpassed in the Sacramento Valley) My husband is on disability because of treatment for cancer that has rendered him unable to work for the foreseeable future. As a result, the burden is left on me, to provide almost all of the necessary financial support to the family. In order to provide for our family, I work for two different employers, one of them full-time, and the other of them part-time. This is no easy task and, for over the past four years, I have been laden with insurmountable stress as a result. Going to the gym is a way to alleviate that stress, which I haven't participated for roughly 2 months, because I have to work extra hours to keep us from going without food and basic necessities, that doesn't even include extras, because we don't have it for extras. I consider the gym a necessity because it is good for our mind, body, soul, and spirit. When that necessity is interrupted by the increasing cost-of-living, and an added fee, because our financial institution returned payment for lack of funds, not any fault of ours, but a fault of the administrator of my husband's disability payment, it is doubly punitive. The assistant, general manager of the particular club we like to visit assured us a refund of that charge as we've always been loyal customers that paid on time. This one time interruption of our membership was just that, one time. We were given zero grace for that occurrence when I received an email this morning at 10 AM stating we still owed $9.99. Really? We're going to be hassled over $9.99 that we were told was being waived? Somebody lied to us because I called the club to air this grievance, and there was an unwillingness to honor what we were promised. We were told we would have to wait for that particular manager to come in on Sunday to fix it. In the meantime, I get to spend the remainder of my workday, stressing for how I'm going to resolve this problem that I have to wait to resolve. I do not like having stress in the back of my mind for three days. I don't believe anybody does. In my opinion, good business management extends beyond a single individual, and there are always multiple individuals that are able to resolve an issue should someone be away. In the two businesses I work in, one for the federal government, and the other one for a corporate entity, we have several individuals in place that can create problem-solving solutions should the need arise. $9.99 is a small problem to fix, but they must be so hard up for people's hard-earned money that they'd rather take it away from us. We pay almost $300 for my husband, myself and our daughter to work out there. It's probably time for us to look for other options of clubs to work out at, if this is what we foresee to be our future at this fitness club. read more

Over all this is an adequate gym. Bathrooms could be cleaner, equipment is reasonably maintained. My biggest issue with this facility is the lack of enforcement of posted rules, specifically in the free weight area. It gets crowded especially during prime time too many members bring their gym bags to the workout area and it becomes a safety hazard. Also individuals that use portable speakers and subject other members to their music. BUY SOME FREAKING HEADPHONES AND STOP BEING SO INCONSIDERATE!! read more

I prefer the other location! This gym is unkept; dust is everywhere. Always low on toilet paper and/or disinfectant supplies. I have never seen an employee clean. They always seem to be relaxing at the front desk or in one of the offices. You don't need more than 2 people at the front desk! I've even seen the front desk unattended. They're not as welcoming either. Giving them 3 stars because my boyfriend likes the heat from the sauna & the steam room. read more

Yesterday when there was a special 1hr/30 min Zumba class with about 50 people the temp was 78 in the Zumba room! The day prior it was 75 and usually it is at 72. Even though several members have ask the front desk many times to bring the temp down it always some excuse. Now they say that the manager had the key but was not on site. Obviously he knew there was a special Zumba class-why couldn't he adjust the temp before leaving for the day!! The rest of the gym seems to be cool, it is only the room where mainly women do a workout. We do not appreciate being constantly ignored by management. read more

Several In-Shape members and I continue to be very disappointed after leaving 9 unanswered messages with In-Shape staff members for Zachary Rankin, Salinas In-Shape General Manager @ 1502 N.Main St. Salinas. The greviances consist of resent unsanitary conditions in the sauna and steam room areas as well as ants and other insects throughout the club. As Long Term members, that have memberships that extend throughout California we are not sure what Our next steps should be. Since we have not received any return calls or contact with Zachary Rankin, General manager. Staff members verified that they provided him the messages in person or spoke to him and left my written messages for him. We are now reaching out to the Monterey County Health department to share the incidents, pictures, and additional abuses. read more

This gym could be GREAT. Good equipment, great space, friendly and approachable staff but... I never see staff putting back weights and today when I went both racks were completely empty. When I told staff both racks were legit completely empty they said "they were moved to the other side". I went to the other side and found more empty racks. Staff is always, I mean ALWAYS selling membership. BUT you ain't gonna keep members if the weights are a mess ALL THE TIME. The clientele, for the most part, does not understand the gym etiquette of putting sh*t back. The women here are the worst, and being a woman myself this makes me sad, because they will bogart the 30 pound barbell for their entire hour plus workout and maybe use it for 6 minutes tops. It's a wonderful gym very spacious. Been working out here for close to a year. The only thing I would have to say is to train your employees for BETTER customer service when I walk in I want to be talked too and smiled at, but mostly all the employees just stare at their phones or computer screen or only talk to people they know. (Mostly the AM employees from 8:30-11am) Another issue is when I walk in and sometimes no one is at the front desk. You should be having enough employees to be working at every part of the gym. Bottom line is your employees should be welcoming everyone who enters the gym. This gym is conveniently located for me. It's very popular. Each evening the parking lot is stuffed with cars. There is lots of equipment. The staff is very friendly. I am always greeted when I walk in. Check in is quick. The reason I don't give it five stars is that the equipment in the cardio area has often been broken when I've been there. With the number of members that they have, the gym should keep the equipment in good repair. A year ago, I signed up with a personal trainer to get out of my sedentary pudginess. Although he was friendly, I wasn't making much progress. I do have some mobility issues to overcome, and he never pushed me. After he quit the gym, I got a new trainer, Brianna, a cute, tiny, young thing less than half my age. But I have to say, she's great! She listens to my goals, and despite my limitations, she pushes me to make progress. As a woman, I appreciate having a female trainer who takes me seriously regardless of my appearance. She has always been very professional, yet she has a friendly manner. I like her style! I've noticed that she's the only female trainer there. In the world of macho and muscle in the gym, I feel much more at ease with her as my trainer. I have been coming to this gym for about 2 months now. While they have great low prices, a few things about this gym -This gym is too small for the amount of people they cater to. -Clientele is just garbage and they never put weights back where they go and always seem to drop them, and thus break the weights/machines. -Good luck getting a workout in cause people seem to hog spaces/weights/machines. If I ever need to get a decent upper body workout, I'll just go to another gym, I'm not about to spend 15 minutes looking for the weights I need for my workout. In-shape is like the Walmart of gyms. This could be a good gym, but they need 2-3x more space and equipment than they currently have. read more

I would like to praise Oscar. Right of the bat I informed him that I was not interested in purchasing a membership, and instead I first wanted to take advantage of their free week guest pass. He was very understanding and respected my decision. I appreciated not being furthered pressured in evaluating my decision. He also answered any questions I had and gave me a tour of the facility. Great customer service Oscar! Pros: Spacious facility, free 7-day guest pass, diverse set of machinery and weights, basketball court, lockers available (must have your own lock), CLEAN, price is manageable. Cons: Unorganized weights throughout the day (recommend signs with reminders to put weights back into place or have employees do so throughout the day), no towels are offered, sauna and jacuzzi under maintenance (if I remember correctly, they don't have a pool). PS: They are currently offering a $0 initiation fee! read more

I've been a member of InShape Health Clubs since the Monterey location was established. Because of my job I cover a wide territory and the type of membership I signed up for gives me the opportunity to visit various locations in my daily travels. I'm writing a review on this particular location because of the improvements and progress it's made in the past year. I read some of the other reviews and while I would've agreed with them about a year ago, I am thoroughly impressed with this location. Just as every "remodel" it does take time and even though it was annoying during that time, the end result was well worth it. They have a new huge functional training area, battle ropes and tons of free weights. As silly as this sounds I even like the Skylights with natural lightning. Lobby with wifi is a plus too! I'm keen on things like that and cleanliness which this gym actually meets all my needs. I was given a tour by the manager, Mark (not sure of his last name), who was very friendly and thorough. The staff at the front desk are very inviting and even smiled which isn't common at other locations. read more

Used to be one of my favorite gyms, but now it's just okay. The staff is very nice, but a good amount of the workout machines need a serious upgrade. A lot of the machines are really old and creaky (especially the leg machines, Matrix machines and some of the Body Masters machines). Most of the time a lot of the equipment/machines are broken, especially the cable stations. These old machines break so often, I wonder why they don't just replace them with new ones. In addition, the weight training area is super disorganized and messy. Dumbbells, barbells, and weight plates all over the place. Most of the time I can't find the dumbbells I want or I am trying not to trip over scattered dumbbells all over the floor. The gym is OK, but needs a big-time upgrade on machines, equipment, organization, and maintenance! read more

I have been a member of In-Shape for a few years and decided to enlist in a personal trainer. Brianna has been a great personal trainer! She always greets me with a smile and a friendly hello. I always get a great workout from her and I like that she thoroughly cleans the exercise mats before I lay down on them. I like this gym, the guy who used to work Saturday mornings was the best. I been going here for 3 years. It's in a nice area, can get packed, parking is hard. I like the equipment and the upgrades & remodels are great. Some of the staff could use customer service training. Most of them are great and greet the customers. The sales staff are great too. The front desk staff are the issue. They don't say hello or greet you. Lately, there is no one in the front and this causes a big line to get in, especially during peak times. This is the customer service I suggest they need help in. I like this gym a lot, however, I expect a community feel at my gym. Sometimes they don't make you feel welcomed. Hands down worst gym in salinas is this location. Dumbells are old and totally disorganized all the time. Equipment is broken for months. Not that hard to have staff pick up scattered weights and take trash out. Not that hard to let members know they MUST pick up after themselves. I didn't pay 47.99 a month to pick up after everyone else. Don't have any of these issues at Golds! I love coming at 4am and love to go to the pink room but for the past 2 days , the janitor busts in during my workout and leaves the door wide open and completely throw me off , I keep the door closed for privacy and he comes in and leaves it open and goes to clean something else and yesterday I closed it behind him and he came and opened in and continued to clean other areas .. The only reason I am giving it a one star cause overall it was a good place to work out but when it came time cancel my account there they gave me the run around and the supervisor didn't help out all made me open another account pay another $10 plus the first month told me she fixed my issue then woke up they charged me twice from my old account and new went in to talk to her again basically she said she can't help me so I had Call cooperate and they helped me and got to the bottom Said they way over charged me and gave me a refund that's another reason for the one star so be careful with them read more

Ugh.. where to begin.. I used to love coming to this gym. My favorite part was zoning in on my workouts in the pink room. But then some people would go in and use the machines and break them. it took a while to replace the broken pieces. So frustrating. The afternoons are super busy which was no fun. I am rating this based on my personal training experience. In December I signed a contract for personal training. After 2 sessions with breaks in between so my trainer who had recently gotten busy with another job (no big deal, I know trainers have day jobs) could reschedule, I stopped hearing from my trainer. I left him alone because I knew he had a new job and wasn't trying to lean on somebody trying to make a living. So a MONTH passes by and I realize I'm never going to hear from him. (He was a really nice guy and very competent trainer, so I'm not going to name names). I wasn't mad at this point, just decided that if this is how I was going to be treated by IN-Shape as a company (not by my trainer, who - YES - SHOULD have contacted me to pawn me off on another trainer)), then I wasn't interested in continuing with my training and wanted only 2 things to make things right: 1) Refund me for the 6 sessions I never received. 2) Terminate the contract without the $120 early termination fee - given that I wasn't backing out because I had gotten lazy, but because their was a MAJOR failure on the customer service side to see that I was taken care of when their trainer got too busy to make good on my sessions. Am I mad, NO - i don't spend a lot of time dwelling on things...but as a client/customer I am VERY unsatisfied by how this has been handled and the only way businesses pay attention is if you let people know how poorly you are treated. I had to FREEZE my training contact. This is so I won't get charged the termination fee of $120. And even though, I NEVER received the training, I am on the hook for the $150 I already paid, because AFTER I mentioned wanting to terminate, they offered another trainer...but I am too SOURED on the experience to want another trainer after what is now almost 2 months later. At this point I will consider my legal options. I'm thinking maybe small claims? I can fill out the paperwork in my spare time and consult a free paralegal. And if they want to send a high paid lawyer all the way from Stockton (their local home office) to defend $150 in trainer fees and a $120 termination fee, even if I lose, I figure I still break even just for their hourly rate + gas from Stockton to Salinas in whatever fancy car s/he probably owns. What a waste. I was basically happy with the gym, even though it has been "Under Construction" since I joined and the free weights are arranged somewhat haphazardly with no real logic (no true "stations" i.e., shoulder, chest - things could easily be grouped correctly with a little forethought and one or 2 days of people working in the late hours where it wouldn't bother anyone OR on the weekends when they close a little early and could get a crew in there). I guess that is how business is done these days. Had I been treated well, I could have at least talked up my trainer who was very knowledgeable even though I wasn't happy. Or I could have had a victory story about how well I was treated over what should have been a minor dispute. But now, I will neither recommend the gym in general to family, friends or colleagues and there is NO WAY I can recommend sessions with personal trainers after the way I was handled. For want of a little basic business acumen and friendly customer service I might have had a better story to tell. Y'know - I don't have a huge circle of friends and family...but everyone in it will be warned away from In-Shape in general and the training specifically, now that I will need to warn them about how they may be treated. I will be sharing this on my FB page...between family, friends, and people from town who may be thinking of joining, it will hopefully serve as a deterrent to doing business with In-Shape anywhere in Monterey County. I figure for the $270 hit my wallet will take for this one...if my review talks just 2 or 3 people out of joining at their low rate of $15 or $20 a month ($180-$240/year) me and In-Shape will be square. Just canceled my membership today. Trashy gym, bad service and try to get you on hidden fees and lock you in a long term contract with a heavy cancellation fee. Lied to me saying they will improve their gym during the construction but fell short on their promises. Monterey has a great sports complex worth the drive. read more
