I used to love this location (Fairfax) of Kaize . However, recent changes have made me decide to…read morepull my kids out and go to a different location. My kids are in the youngest age group (under 7). They used to be taught by adult Sempais, and I could see them gaining skills, self control, respect, etc. But this location recently changed to allowing older kids to serve as Sempais and run the class. These kids don't have any experience with teaching children - they're still children themselves. The focus of classes has shifted from learning skills to just "conditioning" - running, sit-ups, push-ups, etc. And these child instructors just don't have the self-control to serve as instructors. At the end of most classes, the Sensei/Sempai ends with a fun game to conclude on a fun note. But recently, the child Sempai leading a dodgeball-type game got carried away and way too competitive and was throwing the ball full force into little kids' faces. I saw a 4 yr old get slammed in the face (by the Sempai) so hard she fell down. And the Sempai appeared to like it and continued to throw full full force at other 4, 5, and 6 year olds. That was the breaking point for me. The other Kaizen locations are good, and we'll stick to those ones.

Najim, the coach is great. He is very technical in his instructions but still very understanding that it takes time to learn the techniques. Plus he has a strong competitive record: Multiple Sabaki (full contact Enshin Competition) wins and multiple Muay Thai Titles. It should be noted that some of the techniques are modified compared to pure Muay Thai to more of a Dutch style of Muay Thai. The classes run one hour, with about 10 minutes of warm up and stretching, about 40 minutes of technique training, and then about 10 minutes of calisthenics at the end. The varieties of techniques vary class to class ranging from the very basics to sparring for the more experience students. Also available are: Children and Adult Karate - I don't know a ton about these but have seen Najim coaching the children's classes and the kids seem to be learning alot of good techniques and still having a ton of fun. Also Enshin Karate, being a combination of kickboxing and Judo, does teach many techniques that are very real world usable should the students need them in an actual self defense situation. Gracie Jiu Jitsu - These classes are taught by Toney Waldecker, a blackbelt under Relson Gracie, son of Helio Gracie - the inventor of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I don't know a lot about these classes either but Toney seems to be a very good trainer and Relson visits the dojo a few times a year it seems.

During the birthday parties all attendees have a chance to break a board. Huge highlight for the majority of the children. They also have different themes for the various camps which makes it more unique and interesting for students and instructors. They have great communication prior to the event and share pics during the day for the camps. During drop-off and pick-up they greet the children with bows. The instructors clearly love working there. They know how to balance having fun with teaching new skills and/or providing instructions. Plus, it's very impressive how quickly they learn the students' names. I love watching the children learn the value of respect and discipline. We've already signed up for some weeks of their summer camp too! Lastly, they are a great community member, giving back to the local schools, hosting parents' night out, and always offering deals and promotions.

Imagine my surprise when she joined in the activities easily and even saw a smile crack on her face! The instructors were so engaging and fun and I felt like they really did a great job encouraging and teaching the kids in a respectful manner. They truly run a tight ship here and I was impressed with the way they were able to easily flow from one activity to another while keeping up with a rambunctious group of second graders. They have a nice seating area for parents to watch, as well toys, coloring sheets, and crayons for siblings. I have walked by several times when they are doing their morning/after school camps and have always noticed how each kid seems truly excited to be there. If my daughter was interested in joining, I would sign here up in a heartbeat.

I've hesitated to post this review but I feel I need to. About two years ago, after my son turned…read more4, we decided to try Andrew Gause on some neighborhood recommendations, thinking it would help him with some coordination and balance issues. We were asked to come a half hour early for our free trial class, so we did. When we got there it was quite crowded and busy with all of the evening classes, but I filled out all the paperwork and talked to Andrew. Andrew didn't really meet my son or talk to him - just me. I didn't realize how long we'd be sitting there so I didn't really bring anything for my son to do, and he didn't have a spot to sit since it was so crowded. He was on the floor, bored, wiggly, and excited. I should have brought something for him to do but I didn't realize he was supposed to sit there waiting for a half hour. He was four. As time went on he got pretty wiggly and started complaining that he wanted to go in, but I told him he had to wait. He wasn't behaving badly - just restless because he was sitting there for so long and kept getting bumped into. Again, he was four years old, and excited. Don't tell parents to bring kids in a half hour before class - it's just setting them up for failure. Finally the students for the class started coming in, and I asked Andrew if we were supposed to go in too. He then loudly stated "based on what I've observed, your son is NOWHERE near mature enough for this" and told us that we should just observe the class. My son was devastated after waiting nearly a half hour for this, other parents were staring at us after Andrew loudly chastised us, so we left. My big regret is that this experience kept us away from Taekwondo for two years - I thought the sport just wasn't the right fit for us. I was wrong. The sport is a fine fit. This studio is not. My son is thriving at a different studio now, is focused and works hard, and is building his confidence and coordination. I am sure Andrew Gause is the right fit for many kids, but I would caution families with particularly energetic or young kids about going here. I don't think anyone who understands young children would expect an excited 4 year old to sit on the floor of a crowded, noisy room for a half hour and be perfectly calm.

Our family has been disappointed to find that Master Yoon has been dishonest with us and has scammed us of our money. The story is long, but please bear with me. We are a military family, and knowing that the Air Force was going to move our family this summer, I asked Master Yoon in November 2019 if he would refund us the early summer camp registration and graduation pass package if we had to move prior to using those services. He promised me that he would, so I signed up and paid $1,280. When time came for us to move, I asked for our refund from Master Yoon. He told me he would request it from Life Champ' headquarters. After 2 weeks, I went back to ask about it. He acted all surprised that headquarters hadn't sent me the refund and said that he would follow up with them. After another 2 weeks, I decided to call headquarters myself. I was surprised to find out that they did not handle the finances there, and that Master Yoon had separated the finance of his own franchise from the Life Champ brand months before. When I told the owner of Life Champ of this situation, he called Master Yoon. Within minutes, Master Yoon calls me to say that he would refund our money electronically but that it would take a week. I wondered why an electronic transaction would take a week, but gave him the benefit of the doubt again. After 2 weeks, we still did not see a refund. I called him again, and he said he would send us a check. He even confirmed with me over the phone that he sent the check a few days later. 3 weeks go by, I still have not received the check. I called again. He acted surprised and said he would send a second check. I asked for a picture of the check and a receipt from the post office. Instead, he sends me a photo of an addressed envelope. When I emailed him back for the picture of the check and receipt from the post office, he never replied. I waited another 2 weeks. Still, no check. Since then, I have not received a reply to my voice message nor any check or electronic refund whatsoever. I first requested the refund in July 2020. It is now September. Master Yoon has put on an act and lied to our family over and over again. Within this time, he has broken from the Life Champ franchise and has rebranded to Master Kick Martial Arts. For someone who is supposed to teach our children integrity and respect, I am sorry to say that he has neither.
