"Man, it's too bad you're not a drive thru." That was, more or less, the response Bobby Enslow got when he opened Indaba in 2009 (drive thru coffee is ubiquitous in Eastern Washington). Enslow, 29, was among the first in Spokane to really get nerdy on coffee, and over time his eclectic customers have warmed to his vision. The West Central neighborhood where Indaba is located is historically poor, but the city's stunningly beautiful Spokane County Courthouse is just around the corner, and a redevelopment project is bringing new life and new money to the area. ("Its just an old dumpy area, that's all it is," says my grandfather. "But it'll improve.") Enslow regularly serves city council members alongside local homeless. In that regard, Indaba might be one of the more democratic "third place" cafes I've ever visited. While Enslow energetically keeps up on the latest trends--with a multiroaster menu, a workhorse La Marzocco Linea from the 80s, pour over service, and signature drinks--Indaba doesn't necessarily look the part of a high-end cafe. Amazing espresso drinks!! I had the Stacatto, espresso + club soda + lemon vanilla syrup + cream, and it was delicious. I was sad when the drink was finished! My husband had the Kendall Yards, a mocha with cinnamon and cayenne. Also delicious! All the drinks sounded good - I want to try them all! read more

Horrible tasting coffee. My boyfriend got a Chai cinnamon latte it was watered down and lacked flavor. I got my usually coffee drink. white chocolate with two shots on ice with a shot of cream.. She added water to my drink and filled the cup up so high with ice I couldn't put a lid on it. Not going back. read more

Besides great coffee and tasty munchables, the place offers some suprises, from origins of the building and its architecture (eco-friendly) to the attached book store with its fair trade gifts. Great coffee! I cannot say one bad thing about the coffee. Unfortunately the line gets long and getting a drink takes longer. Every time I've been in, there has only been one person working. They take orders and make drinks. It takes way too long. There also isn't much room to sit. It's not a place you can just chill with a few friends. If you could maybe waiting so long to get a coffee would be no big deal. read more

12oz pour over coffee for $5 - $8. Indaba must have the best roasters on the planet. Wait, that can't be true... I have been to Blue Bottle and Coava and Four Barrel and have never paid over $4 for a 12oz pour over... The real thing is, the beans and the baristas aren't that great! read more

Finally! Third wave coffee ~hipsterness~ has arrived in Spokane!!!!! They roast their own beans. They do not burn their beans. They know their flavor profiles and offer beans from all over. They pull espresso right and serve with sparkling water just like the best places in Seattle or Portland. They do cold brew, nitro, pour over, and all espresso+ drinks. The Howard location is casual and more appropriate for studying or casual conversation. The Broadway location is more posh / sleek. Any third wave coffee enthusiast would be very happy with Indaba. read more

Went in and asked about biggest size they offer. Was told 16 oz. I know it's the hippie thing to have ever-smaller cups and is more profitable margin-wise, but as someone who normally orders 20 or 24 oz, that made me feel like the business didn't want my money. Strike one. Then I was told they DO NOT offer any sugar-free flavors! What?? Strike two. As if that wasn't bad enough, to add insult to injury I was told that there was only drip coffee available because they're closing "soon". I'm sure different people have a different definition of "soon" but as a customer only my definition matters and I'm OK with 2-3 min. Strike three! I'm out. Maybe permanently. read more

I'm pretty picky about where I stop - I'm on the road a lot, so I'm always looking for the best local coffee shop. This one is in my top 10 all time. A great space to relax, super nice baristas, and, most importantly, GREAT coffee. I tried one of their Ethiopia espressos and the nitro cold brew - both were excellent. Good coffee, but very disappointing service. We went on a quiet weekday morning, only two others in the shop, baristas seemed inconvenienced to take our order. I was offered room in my [delicious] cold brew, but again, it seemed I inconvenienced them when asking for the half and half as it was put away in the fridge. Unfortunately, my little guy spilled his hot chocolate before I could walk across the room to get a lid, I wiped up the table, but did require assistance from staff for the floor, which he did with a huge sigh of annoyance. Understandable, especially if they were busy, but they weren't busy, and sometimes spills happen. Despite three other adults in our group ordering coffees and pastries, there was no offer to make him another hot chocolate. Good coffee, but service counts just as much as the product. read more

If you want an average cup of coffee go down the street to the corporate owned place! This is the first time in my life I have ever been able to drink a cup of cold brew, nothing added and not gagged on the bitterness. Bobby is an awesome barista and makes everyone feel welcome. Hands down the best shot pulled in Spokane. I've lived in Seattle for 12 years and know good coffee - Herkimer, Victrola, Trabant, Seattle Coffee Works, Light House, and Vita are the best there is in Seattle and Indaba measures up to all of them. The only thing missing is a Synesso machine and some high quality water filters. If you love outstanding coffee, and don't need 20 different selections of pastries then look no more. I frequent Atticus as well if Ben is pulling really find their coffee to be quite good - but not as good as Indaba. Ample free parking makes it a must. read more

Very rude person at the counter. I think the service would be better if had been an ass to a new customer, who didn't understand the differences between the different brew techniques. I didn't want to give them my money to an awful establishment, so I went to Coure Coffee where they are friendly. read more
