I'm really glad that this mall is here. I lived in few rural areas in the past and they have no malls or a small Mall. This mall may be small. It may not be a big Las Vegas mall Seattle Mall or Portland malls. For a small mall this small mall is loaded with awesome stores. The mall is actually fun and has your arcade the food Court's cool I we ate some pizza today. My favorite place is the massage place :) called relax magic. this use to be a great place till the continuous shootings and criminal activity this will end up like banister mall oak park mall did it right high end stores and security and police are present you goto the center and nothing no one anywhere last week was the latest of the shootings. poor mall management that took over with promises that never took place, huge entertainment equipment within the mall never opened only to be dismantled now. id rather see it be torn down than a magnet to criminals. seriously as much as i hate to say it. we dont even goto dicks anymore because of crime. dont go here if your looking for alot of shops many have left empty sears is gone macys gone only dillards left indep no longer has jcpenny either they left. dicks dillards and a few other stores left goto directory. we drive from this area to oak park mall or other locations and indep center is just a short drive... nope! read more

First time coming here. It's been a long while since I've been to a mall and it's great to come here. It's a solid mall, it's trying to do alot of things to keep itself up to date with their indoor jungle gym they're building. The food court needs to definitely be updated with better food vendors. It's also a bit weird with the arcade games in the food court as well. Fair variety of stores though they're not the best either. Plenty of parking as well overall it's an average mall worth checking out casually. read more

An old and dated mall that is very nostalgic for a child of the 80/90s. I don't see this often living in NYC, so it's somewhat of a treat for me. There's not much here but it brings me back to my childhood. There's plenty of mall staples like Hot Topic, Pac Sun, and Zales. They also plenty of popular current shops like H&M and Forever 21. There are two large department stores, Dillard's and Macy's. Sears occupies a large footprint here but it seems to be out of business. We visited on a weekday and it was seemingly empty. Very easy to walk around and do some shopping if any of the current stores are of interest but it's not much more than nostalgia here for me. read more

The mall its self wasn't bad, arcade was decent, seemed like 85% of the shops sold the same mech. I'm giving a 1 star due to the random people at all the kiosk trying to scam people into buying something odd or giving to a random cause they explained in 5 different ways. Literally chased down several times to see if I was interested in this or that. No, I would of stopped if you had anything to offer me. On top of that 20th century legends is a JOKE!! Their damaged collectibles over priced !! Funko pop especially. Prices start at $25 ? For a standard pop walmart can't even sell? They wanted $35 for an extremely common pop that cost $6 in reality. " What If Captian American Zombie." Which I have 3 of. 2 small 1 large. When we walked out after expressing their prices are insane, and they'll never sell them for that. We walked out, only to be chased down by the clerk claiming the sonic plushie we won at the arcade was stolen from there. It's sad bone of those pops will find a home. read more

Haven't been in this mall in years! Some things have changed while others haven't. It wasn't too busy for a Thursday afternoon. Everything was nice and clean. One of our favorite spots was the play area it's large enough to run around and lots of things to climb on. They have a carousel which my daughter was extremely excited about. Unfortunately they required an adult 18+ to ride and I can't due to motion sickness so her teenage cousin couldn't even ride with her. She was sad about that but felt better after being able to ride a few of the mini cars they have. One of my favorite things about this mall is that the food court is in the middle and not on the end like other malls I've been to. It's nice because you don't have to go to the opposite end of mall to grab a snack. read more

I went to see the Easter bunny with my kids. The bunny went for a break when I first got there and showed back up 45 minutes later and kept taking his head off to talk right in front of all the children. It was ridiculous. He did it at least 5 times that I saw. There was only one worker taking the money, printing the pictures and handing them out. 1 worker and the bunny. It took 2 hours when there was only 10 family's in front of us. Whatever company they use is worthless. Just a money scam. This is why I go to Bass Pro. They are way more professional than this place. read more

I have to give it 5 stars, why? Cause I live in Independence, and Oak Park Mall is too far to drive. Besides the fact that Indep. Center also has a pretty cool Hot Topics, and a large enough Pac Sun. I spend alot of time in Pac Sun, and I know their products, as well as they do. (skateboarder in the house). I watched them tear down the center food court. I watched them rebuild the food court, and now it's pretty cool. They recently added Orange Julious. Too many places to eat to list here. I love the lay out, it's comfortable, not too much walking. Architecturally, it's sound. I don't mind the walking. They have benches throughout the mall, and also little restaurants (Annie's, Gloria Jeans, etc...) for breaks. I spend alot of time at this mall. Macy's, Dillards, a Sears I don't go in except when I need my car battery fixed (See my Sears review). Large Old Navy, Lids, Applebee's, T-Mobile, Sprint, The Walking Store, Bath and Body Works, Wilson's Leather, Payless Shoes(I don't shop there), Zumiez-one of my favorites, Tradehome-another favorite. Ton's others. The stores are spacious, and I usually find what I want. Which is often having to do with the Mac make-up counter at Macy's. The mall is made up of carpeted ramps, and kiosk's a plenty. 3 sets of escalators, and cool glass elevators you can see through. The guys are Tradehome rock my world, and are so awesome and so cool, I should just write a separate review for Tradehome. The problem I've seen, and it's not been solved yet, and has nothing to do with Indep. Center is, there's not a very close gas station. That might actually be solved by traveling over to Wal-mart. That has nothing to do with Mall, I just added that cause it's late and I felt like it.. Khol's, Best Buy and Barnes and Noble are across 39th street. read more

Independence Center gets a negative rap sometimes because of a few incidents that have occurred here in recent years. It's unfortunate because it is a decent indoor mall. I don't go here often because it's at least a 40 minute drive for me and most of the stores here can be found near me anyway. They do have a nice selection of sports related stores (Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, etc) that my son loves. The food court is fine enough if we need to grab a snack. Panda Express, Subway, etc. are fine. The last time we went, the bathroom area had the worst smell and I literally had to hold my breath for 2 minutes while we ran in and out. Ackkkkk! It was definitely a plumbing odor issue and hopefully maintenance has that under control now for the sake of mall patrons. The kids play area is big and open. Just make sure you bring your GermX with you as I am a big fan of wiping off hands after playing in a public area where kids shoes have been removed! The day we were there, a child had just gotten into an accident. I think he must have severely broken an arm or collarbone. :( We witnessed mall security come quickly to take an accident report, saw some medical personnel quickly arrive and access the situation, bring out a rolling gurney, temporarily bandage up the child and whisk him away with his parents. It was all handled very quickly and professionally. The atmosphere is comfortable here in my opinion. Lots of families, children, old folks lounging around, and young teens enjoying the mall with their friends. I don't have any problems with it! read more

Great mall. I've been going here since I was a child. Best layout of any indoor mall I've been to. It's built in a large circular fashion, actually it has three spokes, three stories high so you can see most of the stores inside from any vantage point. The food court is located on the bottom floor right in the middle. Probably the oldest mega mall in the KC area. Has a lot of great stores, Dillards, Macy's, Sears anchor the mall. It has Old Navy, Men's Warehouse, hat stores, and Bath and Body works. Not as upscale as Oak Park mall in Overland Park. I wish Independence had Nordstrom and Banana Republic but the area just isn't that type. It's a blue collar mall. Independence center is all alone as an indoor mall in this part since Blue Ridge mall faded away into dust and became a Wal-Mart. There are plenty of outdoor malls and shops in this area now and traffic is thick.. read more

I used to hear people talk so much shit on this mall, saying that it didn't deserve to be a mall, that it was too small, not enough choice, blah blah blah. I don't get it? I can say that it is not the biggest mall I have been to, by far. But I personally, hate those large malls. The idea of a mall is so strange to me anyway. Yes, it's convenient to have that many stores together, INDOOR, avoiding the elements... whatever, it just seems weird. I think this mall is absolutely fine. Good selection for it's size. Not too over bearing. Good little play place for the kids. (Our 4 year old BEGS to go ride the carousel on a weekly basis) I use it to bribe her. "if you're good for 5 days, we'll go to the carousel." it works! I like that that kid-playland thing has hand sanitizer at all of the entrances! Wonderful idea! Kids are diiiiiiirty and pass their sickness around way to easily. Be sure to stop at the sanitizer station on the way in and out! MY biggest complaint about Independence Center is that there is basically one entrance to get in and out of the mall. maybe 2. But around the holiday season it SUCKS navigating around there. I don't understand why there isn't a service road around the mall with more exits. Seems like a planning flaw to me. If that we're fixed, I would give it a much better rating. read more

I went out here on a friend's recommendation to find a good Macy's. I was pleasantly surprised to find a thriving traditional mall. I thought they all died out. Decent store selection in a an area full of other shopping choices. It's probably wonderful if you have kids, but I did almost get run over by the train. Dodging that hazard pushed me directly into Santa's way. Yikes! read more

Unfortunately indoor malls are becoming a thing of the past. The Independence Center is no different. It's sad to see stores come and go. I was very upset when they let Whitebarn CO (Bath and Body Works) take over the old Yankee Candle store. The restaurants also don't stay long. The nice thing is that this mall is indoors, so you can shop in any weather. read more

This is probably my favorite mall by far. My daughter loves the play area. The food court offers a lot of variety. The staff in the stores are usually friendly. The variety shopping wise is decent. Yeah, there has been some criminal activities happen there every once in a while but what mall hasn't had problems? I'd rather have security there in case something did happen. This mall also has the Easter bunny and Santa out to take pictures with every year. The staff that runs those are always so great to my daughter. Independence Center is a decent mall. Not many empty spots and plenty of parking. It is a nice big mall. Clean and safe for the most part. One complaint though, if you are looking for a team hat or shirt, there are only like 5 stores that carry them in the mall, not including stores near by out in the parking lot or other connected strip malls. read more

The smallest cool I've never been to this mall before in KC. It's nothing special or different I will say from an average mall. I can say I got lost after worst time to find my car. I would say they could use a better option for food in the food court area. But they pretty much have the same store that we had in our mall it is a nice size small. I brought my iPhone 6 in to find a red case. I told the kiosk manager that my phone was a 6. He found a red case that I thought was a fit and put it on my phone. He did not mention the no return exchange only policy when I purchased the case. Turned out the case was a seven case and I was not able to plug in my headphones. I went back the following day and there was not a case in the 6 same style so I asked for a refund. It was then he told me about exchange only. Then claimed I did not tell him the phone was a 6. HE fitted the phone and knew that the case wasn't the right one but wanted to make a sale. DON'T EVER BUY PHONE CASES AT KIOSKS-overpriced and they don't stand behind their products or service. My friends and i decided on a nice wonderful day, to go to the Independence Center, to go grab some linner (early dinner late lunch). We first stopped by PetLand, and saw all the cute puppies. my friend and i almost cried because they were so cute. So far, my day at the mall is pretty good.Then, as a group, we all strutted our stuff down to the food court. I was super stoked to go get some Subway. I was thinking about the sweet tea & the sandwich i was gonna order & some sun chips on the way there. it is, well now was, my go-to place to eat when i come to the Independence Center. I love their sandwiches and their free refills. I always go down and get more sweet tea when i am shopping, after i have eaten subway. So after my friends and i got to the food court, I look to my left and i could not believe my eyes. I had to do a double take and make sure what i saw was correct, and it sure was. Subway, is gone. I didn't know what to do. As i was panicking my friends say, "just get some panda!" i look fiercely into their eyes and yell, "I DON'T LIKE CHINESE FOOD!" as i was standing in the middle of the food court, not knowing what to do, i caved in. my friend and I went to the panda express line, (which wasn't very fast for having 'express' in their name) and she said "just get some chow mein! it's really good!" i sat there & thought, "okay, why not. since there is nothing else i would like to eat here", so i got my food and i sat down with my friends, opened the box, and saw the chow mein looking at me in my eyes. i take my fork, take a bite of my food, and shout "this is nasty!" So, thank you, Independence Center for taking my Subway away. this had made my experience at the Independence Center not very well. read more

I love malls. I think my past review of the now defunct Metro North Mall voiced that thoroughly. I'm an 80's kid so what can I say. The Mall was the thing back then. This was the mall I went to growing up and will always be the mall I judge other malls against. It isn't the biggest place in the world but it beats having to drive anywhere else. I remember trick-or-treating here as a little kid, and this is also where I got my very first job. I love how there are always birds inside. Unfortunately, visitors at this mall now run the risk of getting shot at, and stores open and close and relocate at an alarming rate -- the reason I quit working here was because my store closed too. I haven't been here in a while but the mall I remember is worth my four stars. read more

We made the mistake of bringing a visiting family member from out of the country to this mall to walk around one day. She had the gall to take a picture of the carousel, so naturally security swooped in and informed us that we are not allowed to take any pictures of anything in the mall. "It is a privacy issue" apparently. You should have security outside begging people to visit your empty ass Mall rather than running off foreign tourists with money to spend. Don't worry, you'll have all the privacy in the world when the remainder of the stores move out. No skin off our backs though, there is a Coach store on the Plaza too so we just headed over there instead and took all the pictures we wanted along the way. read more

It's the way a mall should look. Plenty of stores... plenty of things to entertain the kids.

You can find the stores here elsewhere (nothing really unique), but with the closing of other malls in the KC area, this is great to have around if you want nostalgia and a way to kill an afternoon without having to drive from place to place. This has a more grand, older-school feel than Oak Park (if you are looking for that sort of thing). read more

Love this mall, its clean and has a great variety of stores to explore. It has a decent selection of options at the food court and a nice seating area that is kept clean for the most part. I enjoy this mall a lot. It is the closest mall to me so I go here often. There are good choices for clothes, toys, and food. The new owner has recently taken out lots of different stores that many people enjoyed. Such as Sephora and Subway. There are enough shops that you will most likely find what you need, but there could definitely do more. I miss the way the old owner had it though. They always had the mall decorated for whatever holiday, the mall around Christmas time was gorgeous. The old owners also had many more stores that applied to everyone's wants and needs. The new owners don't have all of this. I think the mall is okay and it gets the job done, but it could be better. I would recommend going to Zona Rosa or the Oak Park Mall over this one. read more

Halloween trick or treat was not good at all for the kids. First of all, they didn't have any candy to give out for the AMOUNT of stores this mall has. 1 piece for every 5 stores. Ridiculous!!! That's why we brought the kids out to be safe and trick or treat, not shop. read more

This is a safe, spacious mall that is good for walking. There's a decent selection of stores and food options. Strangely, parts of this mall smell like musty kitty litter but other parts smelled just fine. Overall, I think that Oak Park Mall is better since the same stores seem to have better inventory over there. read more
