His quotes were expensive but I've used a lot of contractors over the years in rehabbing my homes and serving on association boards, and know the value of paying extra for high quality help, so Jacob stood out. Unfortunately Jacob ended up having the terrible combination of being the most expensive while providing the worst quality work of anyone I've ever used. Jacob replaced a broken sump pump along with electrical changes to improve the setup. He was to provide me with a primary pump and a backup pump with "Battery back-up system w/ charging units to be installed for primary pump and secondary pump". Basically, the primary and secondary pump were supposed to both work with AC and DC power from a battery. The primary pump he installed only works on AC, so in a power outage it is worthless(exactly what I wanted to avoid). The backup is a much weaker pump and only works on DC. When I followed up with Jacob he insisted that the primary was just AC, but that it was also backed up, which makes no sense. I wasn't sure if he knew he was scamming me or just didn't know what he was talking about. After getting a chance to research the model he used, it is notorious for being cheap and unreliable. Worse, the electrical work was of embarrassing quality and I'll have to replace it before I could ever sell, and he actually charged me $300 extra due to some "surprise". There are multiple code violations and this job looks so terrible I've attached pictures of it. His reasoning is that I shouldn't care how it looks in my laundry room, and insisted it would pass inspection. Just as a finishing touch, he reused a 17 year old check valve instead of providing a new one, which saved himself ~$25 and threatens the integrity of the whole system. I had other contractors confirm my suspicions of his work and the pumps he used, as well as replace another sewage ejector pump at 1/3 the price of Andrew's quote for a separate project. Now I know I wasn't Jacob's favorite customer, as I was looking to use him for immediate help rebuilding our finished basement after a flood, and all of my other trusted contractors were busy and he was not. I went through different options with him to get the cost down, but at the end he was 50% more expensive than the next highest option, and his scope was much more limited (I was providing most of the materials myself). I had a bad feeling so I cancelled a few hours after telling him we were ready to go. He exploded with insults against me. I felt bad about what happened and know that business owners are competitive so I didn't hold it against him. I apologized and asked him if he would be willing to move forward with the sump pump work described above. This was my biggest mistake. He apologized back and agreed. Maybe his crap work was payback to me, but it is still his unprofessional work and exactly what you are paying to avoid when paying Jacob's prices. You can get quality work using licensed insured contractors that are much less expensive than Jacob. He has a few 5 star reviews out there, but he was so bad for me that I promised myself I would warn others as soon as I got a few moments to write a review.

We're happy with the results and feel great. AC made lots of suggestions we hadn't considered which turned out to be very helpful. At the same time they consulted with us and digested our direction very well. The BUILDERtrend app was also a great way to communicate during construction. David, the owner, seems like a nice guy, and he did a good job replacing the tiles on my bathroom floor, and he (mostly his assistant) did a lot of painting, which on the whole looks good. But see below... The big issues were what I discovered after he was finished and had left: fresh paint stains in multiple areas, including the wood floor of my 19th century house and even furniture - which I cleaned up. Splattered paint near the ceiling of my kitchen which still, three months later, has not been patched, paint stains on my oriental rug, a major purchase 40 years ago, etc. David said he would pay for the rug damage, and I only asked for 50% of the very reasonable $175 cleaning cost. David told me to bill him via Zelle, something I said I'm not sure how to do. He already has my Zelle information, since that's how I paid him for the work. But after messaging him and emailing several times, he has not responded. And I still have paint streaks on the wall and an unpaid bill. So I can't recommend Handy Gentlemen. I think part of the problem is that David is under-manned and a bit overwhelmed, but not responding to my messages is unprofessional.

Sam is truly a Class Act…read more Having been through our fair share of harrowing and disappointing experiences with handymen and contractors in the past, we were extremely wary as we got started with our kitchen remodel planning process. As a matter of due diligence, we invited 10 contractors to propose a quote. For one, Sam's estimate was very competitive and reasonable (compared to other quotes). More importantly, he quickly grasped what our overall objectives were for the space, and proactively made some great suggestions that gave us the confidence that he was in sync with our requirements. As with most customers that go through a major remodel, my wife and I went back and forth on our choices for the cabinets and countertop, and not once did Sam flinch or pushback. On the contrary, there were certain additional items that were not part of our initial discussions (and estimate) that Sam voluntarily brought up and offered to do for us (at no additional cost) despite knowing that it would mean additional labor to him. Aware that we had wanted the remodel to be completed before Christmas as were hosting a party at home, Sam spent most of Christmas eve literally rolling up his sleeves and working non-stop for over 8 hours (without even meal breaks) and left only after he personally cleaned up the space. It is not always easy for small business owners to consistently put 'customer service' ahead of profits, but that is exactly what I observed of Sam, time and again. He did not accept the final payment until he was certain that we were 100% happy with the final outcome. I do not believe I have ever written such a long review for anyone, and that is hopefully a testimony to Sam's work. We cannot be more delighted with our new kitchen and I am happy to share some pictures. We look forward to working with Sam again on our future home projects.

I never questioned materials or cost until the end I asked for an itemized bill for materials used and they became very defensive and told me in all their years of work they have never had to prove their purchases. During the project, once they instilled the floors in the kitchen, when I went to check it was very uneven. I could feel a massive area that dipped and I knew this was going to be an issue long term. Robert insisted that they would not redo this area and that this is just common with condo buildings. The flooring in my kitchen cracked not even a month into living there. My living room space has multiple scratches and holes everywhere. This is not normal for spending over $14,000 on flooring and labor. Moving on to wainscotting. When we agreed they would do the walls, he told me painting would be included and he would go over it twice. His team painted the walls for the first time and I Hated the color it was so yellow when everything was finished. I called and kindly asked him if he could go over it with a paint that we BOUGHT completely. He said yes. Kindly I thought we understood that we would not be charged since they had to go over it a second time anyway! AND WE BOUGHT the material of paint. But instead he blindly billed me another $600 without ever clarifying. Lastly, his team ripped off all my closet doors to get flooring into the closets. They did not take into account or gave a shit that they completely ripped open the holes in my ceiling to the point where all my closet doors have been hanging on by a thread all year after their project and now has come down and I need to find a way to re drill holes in different areas to get new doors up. The project from start to finish was a complete scam. The customer service was piss poor. I'm truly disappointed. Being a young girl in Chicago planning for my wedding trusting a company to remodel my room and dishing out OVER $20,000 that I wasn't expecting all for me to have to piss out more money to fix everything that went wrong is so disheartening.
