I made a point of eating once at every Indian lunch buffet on Mass Ave between Central and MIT during the course of a month. India Pavilion is consistently the best of these options. Their service is very good. They seem to take pride in their food. When they bring out new naan, they offer to take my older naan and replace it with the fresh naan. All of the buffet items are excellent quality, and I can see some of the chefs in the kitchen. My only gripe is that once, the waiter didn't bring my change and ended up with a $7 tip on a $23 bill. I have eaten here several times. I even had my wife's birthday party here and managed to buy dinner for six for about 100$. I brought my own wine and cake, and was not charged a corkage fee. I just left a good tip. The food is ok. The meat could be more fresh, as my wife swears the chicken was off one time. The service is fine. wow! i've never wrote on yelp before, but after finding this restaurant through yelp and going there for dinner today, i told my boyfriend i think i'm gonna sign up just to say -- this place is awesome. both of us got dinner plates -- complete with appetizer, soup, entrée, rice, dessert and coffee or tea (about $10-$12). so filling we had to bring leftovers home (which i can't wait to eat for lunch). i ordered the Navrattan Korma and coconut soup, per other people's recommendations. YUM! i ordered the carrot cake for dessert and coffee -- the cake was little too sweet, but with the slight bitterness of the coffee, it worked out pretty nicely -- but then i tried a bite of my boyfriend's mango lassi ice cream and the combo of all three was delicious. i knocked off a star because i like good customer service. it wasn't horrible, it was just "eh" -- but i kinda expected that after reading other reviews. i would definitely go back and bring friends and family. read more

The dosa appetizer is a meal in itself! The chairs are more comfortable than the booths. The booths have very straight backs, which sucks for my back pain. Bathrooms are really nice Garlic naan was okay but not excellent and the same goes for the Mango Lassi The atmosphere was very nice, very open. I am Indian, live near Central Square. On a Sunday afternoon, planned to dine out with couple of friends. Since Indian Pavilion is at Central Square and was just renovated, we planned to visit this place for Indian Food. Ambiance is good. Not much of decor, but whatever is there is simple and sober. There was lunch buffet. I am vegetarian. There was 1 appetizer, veg. pakora. It was ok. There were 5 vegetables curry's (sabji) which was quiet surprising to me. Till date I have been to multiple India resturants for lunch buffet, but none of them had more than 3 vegetable curry's (sabji). 2 sabji's were decent, 3 were OK. There was nan. There was rice but no dal. We were expected to have rice along with one of the sabji's (vegetable curry). Overall food was OK. Nothing exceptional or outstanding. The service was OK. The price I paid for myself was $10, which was quiet a surprise. Since, Sunday Lunch buffet @ Central Sqaure for $10, was good. So overall the food was equivalent to what it was priced for. Hence, it was not a bad decision to pick Indian Pavilion for the price I paid. read more

I have eaten here twice and gotten the Veg Thali both times. It was great both times. The paratha and garlic naan were both delicious. I recommend the Bhindi Masala and the Aloo Chole too. After coming here with some friends, none of us will go to Shalimar again. We unanimously thought it was better, and Shalimar had been our previous default Indian restaurant. I've had pretty much all the indian lunch buffets in the area (Shalimr, India Castle, Desi Dhaba) and this one is easily the best. The items change every time, there's really good selection, and everything tastes really good. My favorite Indian place in Cambridge. The island which my family comes from (Trinidad) has very similar food, and when I can't make it into Boston fast enough to curb my curry cravings this place hits the spot. The Aloo taste so good. I love getting chicken curry with roti bread. I'm always disappointed when I go somewhere else (I actually would rather buy roti and curry from this place than any of the Caribbean restaurants in town, but don't tell them lol). Its funny because this place doesn't have many stars and I ordered online from an Indian place with more stars (on yelp) and was very dissatisfied. Their only claim to fame might be "the first indian restaurant in cambridge" but they do a good job holdin' that title. As one of the spicier restaurants I've ever been to-my boyfriend and I LOVE spicy food-you can expect good portion sizes (not too big, but you'll get real full if you do appetizers too) and the same waitress who is lovely. It is a rather small restaurant that has a comfortable vibe, and a huuuuuuuge menu to choose from. I adore it, but make sure you order enough nan (garlic is my fave) to cure the spice! read more

Why some people are giving this place 2 or 3 stars is beyond me. They seem to have taken complaints about the service very seriously, as the maitre d' kept coming over to ask us how the meal was. Also, they took the plates away too fast, and there was no need to at all, as the dining room was practically empty. The food was very good (which is what I really care about), and you could see into the kitchen, which was clean and stocked with fresh-looking ingredients. The atmosphere was nice. The only thing about it is that the restrooms are one-stall and you have to wait in the dining room, which could be awkward if the place was busy. Overall, good value. read more

I recently met the owner of this establishment while sitting with a friend at the Bar. We had some excellent Manhattans served while we talked with the owner a bit about Indian cuisine. I've eaten here once before, and liked the food-basic Indian. I'd had the okra. but...even then I'd only give it mayyybe a 4 star My boyfriend, his brother and I went for Saturday brunch, and for us that day it meant close to 3pm. We waited to be seated for around 5-10 minutes while waiters walked by us back and forth. I thought maybe they were clearing a table, but really they were IGNORING US. So after hailing down a disgruntled waiter, who might as well have been rolling his eyes and huffing by his lack of interest in us, we were asked if we wanted the buffet (which I already knew the boys I had with me were drooling over) but by the way he asked they were really discouraged, so they were like "I guess not..." We were sat in a completely empty room of the restaurant, which I could'nt care less about, but continued the feeling that we were not wanted here. Without giving us any time at all he asked us what we wanted and looked like it was painful for him! So we said we needed a minute and finally my boyfriend asked if we should leave. The waiter said 'well it's almost lunch for the kitchen and we're about to eat...' and let his voice trail off while he walked away. My boyfriend was so upset we got up and walked out of our "segregated room" with it's own exit so they didn't even know we'd gone. And we didn't feel any guilt about that. NOTE: After this experience I've come to learn "3pm" is standard lunch time for Indian restaurant employees, ei. after leaving here to go up the street to India Castle which is EVEN WORSE-see review, and also observed at Punjabi Dahba(sp?) which I actually LIKE, but my favorite is Mela in Somerville(be careful, it's spicy :) , and I mean it). I am sorry but I will never return. The staff stands around and waits until you have drank half your water so they can refill it and I feel annoyed at their over attentiveness. I asked them to put only $8 on my girlfriends card and they out $9.85.... I said $8? Very frustrating because they wouldn't correct the mistake. When I lived in Central I'd go here all the time. It's still my go to spot in central. Great food for a reasonable price and the servings are big.
