This place mixes their freshly delivered vegetables with OLD ROTTING PRODUCE - and they still charge the full premium price. They also do not get rid of EXPIRED GROCERY ITEMS. It is NOT SAFE - the FDA SHOULD CLOSE THIS STORE DOWN. I have been going here for about 5 months, and finally I have had enough with being RIPPED OFF. I went there last Thursday to purchase some hot cooked vegetables at 4:30 pm. Their HOT kitchen has hours of 11am to 5pm. My vegetables were COLD, when I asked to heat them, the lady agreed but gave me a bad attitude and told me that I should not expect hot food towards the end of the day, even though I was during the time when the HOT kitchen food was still open. Then, I also purchased papdi chat, and she did not fill up the container, and left a whole Inch deep where it was NOT FILLED UP AT ALL. I told her I wanted her to fill up the container, and she refused, and said that space was for the papri. This has not been the case in the past, and I was upset. I should have just left and not paid for anything. Then I bought some fresh produce vegetables using my EBT card, for which the good quality plastic bag is included, and she AGAIN REFUSED to give me the good quality plastic bag even though EBT rules state it is included with the purchase. DEFINITELY NOT GOING THERE AGAIN - VERY POOR SERVICE AND HORRIBLE ATTITUDE. She really gave a negative ambiance and as a result I did not enjoy the food at all. read more

Today I ordered their Samosa , Our alltime favourite. Been watching India travel channel and see people eating Panipuri on their food tour. So i found out this place sells freshly made Panipuri and ordered to try it. Crispy shell where i stuff potatoes, garbanzo beans, tamarine chutney and spicy sauce. Interesting taste! They serve delicious food inside their shop for takeout between tues through sat. (Unique items that aren't served at restaurants) Their store isn't overwhelmingly huge but it is well organized and has a lot of good stuff. I've been going to their store for 20 years. Family owned. Hard workers. Very satisfied each time I go there. Items aren't expired like some other stores. Shelves are fully stocked. For the 8 odd months that I have spent in OC, this has been by far the most frequented lunch place I know of for me!! Can't believe I have not reviewed it before. No frills healthy Indian food, reminds me of my moms cooking! And that, my friends, is a real compliment! Absolutely yummy typical desi food, no frills attached. They have a fixed menu everyday for lunch. Usually you would get a Thali ( 2 veggies, rice, bread, yogurt dip) the veggie menu is fixed everyday. But then, they have yummy finger lickin awesomeness in snacks! Pav Bhaji, samosa chat, dahi vada, kachori chat, bhel puri, pani puri, dahi puri...Mmmmm!!! And if u are here.. Actually I had expected this place to be just another Indian grocery store but was very pleasantly surprised by the fact that they were somewhat different. This place has produce which is actually fresh! Most of the Indian grocers I've been to have dried out good which is so unappealing, but here? The eggplants were brightly purple, they had fresh peas Indian style, bitter melon, and other vegetables and did I mention -- VERY fresh? Like the other reviewer said this place specializes in sweets and boy was there a lot -- the ubiquitous gulab jamun, kulfi and a host of others I'm not familiar with. They even have a steam table of Indian food which a bunch of people were eating. There are small tables where you can sit and eat the food too. Very convenient. We purchased different rotis and naans as well as curry powder and a huge bag of brown basmati rice. Not many places carry brown basmati rice in a large bag. I went to Wholesome Choice yesterday and they didn't have it in a large bag and I ended up buying a small bag for 4 bucks. This large bag was about $12. Hubby was highly impressed with all the pickles and chutneys available too. This is indeed one of the better Indian grocers in the area. My family loves this spot! We've been coming here for the food and groceries for years. I've tried almost everything and love it. The chana bhatura, the pani puri, the papdi chaat, and the pav bhaji are my personal favorites. Their samosas are also really good! My parents love the thali as well. Their yellow kadhi is my favorite sabji - it's really well made. The grocery side also has many great options. It's not a huge shop so if you're expecting every single flavor / brand you're obviously not going to get that. Not much options here. There are very limited items available at a very limited space. It's like a small mom & pop shop like we see in India. The guy there was very helpful not the ones who are behind the counter but the one who does all the work. He seems to go out of his way to help you find something from the nooks and corners that you can't reach. If you are looking for kerala Matta rice (kerala red parboiled rice ) they have 2-3 brands (Nirapara and laxmi). I go there to get my tea leaves and kulfi. So I purchased what I needed and i felt strange because the prices were a little high I usually go to the Indian store in Irvine. Now it's time to review the other half of the India Sweets and Spices. What other is there than the magnificent wall of pickles? FRESH PICKLES! Yes my friends, hidden in the condiments tray next to the steam table are their house made, fresh mixed pickles, and they are yummy beyond compare. If you've only can canned or jarred mixed pickles, you are deprived!! So what do you order to eat with your fresh pickles? From the steam table, the Palak Paneer is potent, best eaten with some fage greek yogurt. The carrots and potatoes are like a yummy carrot pickle cooked with fried potatoes, sweet, spicy, earthy, satisfying. The chili pakoras are sometimes a bit too thick (not stupid, just doughy), and vary wildly in stomach wrenching heat. If they look good, I say get some, risk it. My favorite by far is the aloo paratha, they make it fresh, and they make is CORRECTLY. Both sides are even and thin, the filling is well seasoned, but not over spiced (some bad versions taste like a christmas cake). Imagine a more satisfying version of a samosa, made so fresh for you that you see fresh unwilted coriander leaves in the filling. It's all cheap (I added a picture of the menu), less than half the price of most actual Indian restaurants, so pick up a aloo paratha, and some fresh pickles for lunch... you won't regret. ....and on the other side of the store, next to the wall of pickles, they had some McVites Ginger Nuts last week. BEST DAMN COOKIE SOLD! Everyone else just carries the nasty digestives, none of the salty, treacly, spicy, snappy joy of ginger nuts.... except at India Sweets and Spices. read more

My sister also ordered the potato cutlet which is served with a tamarind sauce on top. They also serve other signature Indain foods like samosas and nan but my favorite part was the sweets.They have a variety of sweets such as ras malai and falooda with ice cream. My sister used to come here monthly to pick up the more raw spices to make Indian food from scratch. Now when she visits from Boston, we have to come here so she can stock up! Some other smaller stores carry the same brands, but not as extensive a selection as they offer here at India Sweets & Spices. We LOVE the Patak Biriyani paste. Make with Chicken, Basmati Rice, and Cauliflower = YUM! While we were here, we loaded up on their cooked food and brought home enough for din dins and leftovers. You can sit and eat, but the seating in miniscule, like a picnic table. Just nice to have an option to scarf down your food immediately if necessary. I think all the pre-cooked TO GO foods were VEG but I am not sure if they were all 100% Vegan. If that is a concern for you, just check. If you came here thinking it's a restaurant, you missed their emphasis which is as an Indian food grocery store, at which they excel. Will definitely be back again and again! I bought Indian Sweets here for the office for the Holi holiday and they sell sweets by the POUND! Amazing lovely candies. I also got a vegetarian plate lunch for about $7. It includes rice, two curries of your choice, and a roti (an Indian version of a tortilla). I love the yogurt curry. I'm docking one star (if I could only dock one star and half) b/c of bad service. A lunch crowd came in that was in the same group were first served by the matron of the establishment and then the straglers in the same crowd were served before me even if they were in line after me. If I spoke Hindi, I would have said something to both the matron and the customers! But it seems like a very authentic Indian food establishment and the feeling is almost like eating in a foreign country so I patiently waited my turn as I was the odd one out. read more

The food is stale and nothing is fresh. Not the puris, not the sauces..nothing. Though one of those hole-in-the-wall type of joints that is run by a family, you would think it is authentic and delicious...and though authentic, and maybe delicious (ehhh) it is not fresh by any means! I also don't like the styrofoam cups used -- come on now, we're in 2012...you would think people would've stopped using styrofoam by now. It's a personal pet peeve that people are not trying their hardest to be environmentally friendly. The food is also on the expensive side, for the portions and quality. People are nice, though. Until now, I always thought that it was impossible for south Indian food to be bad. It could be so-so, it could be bland, it could be so spicy it burned your tongue off... but not bad. Not until today. My thali came with this yellow yogurt vegetable sauce that was on the verge of turning. Two bites and I couldn't force any more down. The vegetables in it were soggy and their breading was peeling off. Trying to dilute it by mixing it with the watery, mushy rice did not help matters. I liked the lentil stew that I chose to go along with it, but five bites or so and it was gone, leaving me with an overflowing section of sour yogurt, a spicy pickle sampler (just onions and carrots) and yellow mushy sour rice. Pretty much the only way a $5.99 dinner thali special could be not worth it was to have it how I had it. Also it was supposed to come with bread, but didn't. Julian got some snacks - unfortunately they all came absolutely soaked in the same yogurt and what normally in any other Indian restaurant would be tamarind paste sauce, but here was bright pink tamarind syrup. It was so tooth-achingly sweet that I couldn't eat it. Seriously like gulab jamun level sweet all up next to these chickpeas, chips, and potatoes. Gulab jamun level sweet is only OK if you are eating gulab jamun. Or pancakes with maple syrup, I guess. Or, you know, nutella crepes or something. But not potatoes and chickpeas. I took some carrot halwa home; I wished I hadn't. I have cooked it better myself. My meal total, with thali special, mango lassi, and halwa, came to $12, which normally I would find reasonable, except that I was still hungry and seriously considered stopping at In-n-Out on the way home. For the gravity of that to sink in, you may need to read my review of In-n-Out. Let's end this review on a positive note though: the samosas were good. I'll admit it. If someone forced me at gunpoint to return to this place and dine, I'd just order 3 samosas and hope that counted. read more

Most indian ethnic stores are known to carry expired goods. ( the neighbor Saral Indian Grocer, carries things as old as Dec 2008 expiry date. Jezz!! Stay away. ) But India Sweets & Spices are one of those few establishments, that has integrity running their business. Its a family own/run business and the minute you walk in you could tell no one there works for daily wages. They are very passionate about helping people find what they need. The owner behind the sweets/snacks counter was little shy, ,but it doesnt take a lot of effort before they being very friendly with you. There is always a crowd, Indians non indians, which is good sign. Helps them keep fresh goods. I think their food counter (which is 100% vegeterian. ) has some delicious food. I guess its one of the very healthy option of Indian food, sinice most of the curries are full of vegetables, and not much grease or cream. They are fresh and tasty, and 5.99 for a 2veg/rice/roti or puri/raitha special. I think this is the first place I saw having puri in their specials. For those who are not familiar with the term Puri - its more like Chalupa, but made of wheat. Its yummy with the garbonzo dish or potato dish. I did buy few sweets, they had good variety. Its not one of those artesia store with hundreds of choice, but what they have, is of good variety. I liked shopping here. Well, today I went in because I was looking for some tamarind paste to make pad thai sauce and I read somewhere that you can find it at good Indian markets. India Sweets and Spices has a reputation of being the best in Tustin. I got some odd looks when I entered the store, but I just smiled and went about my business. A little over half of the unit is the actual grocery store and the other part is a restaurant. As far as size goes, it's tiny. I think my 1000 sq ft condo is twice as big as this place. I looked high and I looked low. I looked at a ton of products I had no idea what they were. Thankfully, most were in English, I'm just unfamiliar with Indian food. I found tamarind-date paste in the refrigerated section, but I think dates would impart a sweeter flavor than I needed. I settled on some tamarind sauce at $3.99 a bottle. read more
