My 7 year old son has been interested in trying Indian food and Indian desserts because of a kids show he watches. We came here on a Saturday afternoon. Upon entry the aromas were amazing! We were excited to try the food they offered. Then came the part where we were ignored by staff, while other people (we were the only white family) were served. I thought, "surely this isn't a race thing, it's just a different culture." We wait, walk around, wait some more. Finally it's our turn to order, and their menu (which is displayed on three flat screen tvs) goes blank. One moment there was a large menu of items and prices, next moment it's black (not turned off, just black). I do my best to order some sweets and samosa. There was one samosa left, and she told me they didn't have any. I could literally see it. At that point, I looked around and got a vibe that we weren't going to gain any ground in the matter. While we are a regular customer at this store and love their food and sweets, a disappointing incident recently occurred. We got sweets for my baby shower and they were spoiled, and were reeking. Of crs, we did not leave the occasion to report it, but went there few days later. They just apologized, but did not offer money back, or offer complimentary items to compensate. Again, we are pretty regular customers and they know us, so we were disappointed with their customer service. Consuming that rotten sweet by a pregnant woman could have had harsh consequences. It is fortunate that others ate it before me and stopped me from trying it. Things can go wrong, but there are professional ways to compensate, and this shop owner did not do a good job. read more

While hanging out with my friend, she mentioned she wanted to check out a few international markets because going to the same American and North Eastern Asian ones could be convenient but ... boring? So I volunteered to take her to India Sweets & Spice because I visited it before and knew we could grab a quick lunch there! The market is located in a business lot across the Burger King block. It's not hard to find, you just have to look for it. Once entered, you'll see array of spices and tea on the first two rows. Then the fresh food and sweets counters on your right and fresh produce and more grocery items in the back. My friend and I went thru each isles checking everything out. We enjoyed all the fun packages, amazed how big it actually is, and how fresh the produces they offered. I ended up getting some turmeric powder, almond cookies and butter chicken dry mix. Then we ordered a samosa, a bowl of curry and a flat bread to sample. While everything was fresh and good, we agree the samosa was the winner! It was warm, crunchy and perfectly seasoned with curry seasoned meet and potato. Hmmm... so good! About the dry mix? I tried it and think it turned out pretty good! Its not as delicious as the butter chicken in some restaurants, but it's convenient and tasted quite decent! read more

After reading all the good reviews about the Chole bhature here at India Sweets and Spices, I was really looking forward to coming here for my own taste of it. I'm no stranger to the delightful cuisine of India, having enjoyed it for over twenty years now. The food service area is located inside an Indian grocery store. When I entered this afternoon I was the only customer there. A nice lady appeared from the back and took my order. I chose to get my food to go but there is seating available for dining here. While my order was being prepared I took the opportunity to browse the grocery section. The store seemed neat, clean and well organized. I had ordered the chole bhature and a side order of bhindi masala. Both items were below standard. The bhature was extremely oily. It had been placed in a paper bag and the bag was drenched in oil. The chole and the bhindi both had that tangy taste that food gets when its old. You can tell when food is not fresh and this wasn't. I will not return here. read more

You can call me a samosa connoisseur and this place definitely tops the list in Hillsboro-Beaverton area! The food definitely tastes like home made food. So, everyone, please take this test: Do you like Swagat? Is that your idea of perfect Indian food? If you answered yes to these questions, please stay home instead of going to India Sweets and Spices and complaining about it. K? Thanks. This is not Swagat; their menu has more than the usual six vegetarian dishes that you see at most boring Americanized Indian restaurants. They have dosas, South Indian crepes with yummy stuffings like potato masala, bhel puri, a very addictive snack, chole bhature, a chickpea curry served with a giant poofy poori, and my favorite, aloo tikki choley, which is a little of everything and is totally delicious despite kind of looking like barf on a plate. For those who know and crave real Indian, or want to try something more interesting, they also have some gems like vada sambar, methi paratha, and loads of crazy deserts like dhoda, peda, various flavors of burfi and laddu which you don't see at most places. They also have a daily thali. The website has their full menu. The store is extensive and huge, and has everything you could want, spice-wise and otherwise. And I mean everything otherwise...if you want some imported masala-flavored Cup O' Noodles, you can get it there. If you are brave enough to try making your own dosas but lack the necessary kitchen equipment, you can get it there. If you need hair oil, a 10lb bag of channa dal, black mustard seeds or amchur powder, candied fennel...you get the idea. I really like this place as both a grocery and sweet shop. My one major complaint that stops me from giving it 5 stars is that every time I've been in, something I want to order is unavailable. However, as people have noted, it's a small mom and pop place with their children running the register and occasionally the cook isn't in. It's occasionally been a trade off: one time I went in and there were no jalebi because the person who made those wasn't in. Then I went another time and the jalebi were fresh and hot, not even yet put out on the tray. I was in heaven! However, the guy who made the dosas wasn't in. No matter what, though, I can get a nice thick lassi that isn't watered down with 90% ice, and when you do get jalebi fresh, that's like the luckiest day ever. The tamarind chutney is super flavorful as well, and I'm not usually a fan of sweet chutney. Also, yes to crispy hot dosas and samosa or the fried lentil bread served with chutney. The grocery is small, but you can get some nice staples that you wouldn't find in other places, like the many kinds of dal your kitchen might be missing, some cheap almond or coconut oil or that ribena and Cadbury flake you've been missing. read more

A big improvement over the tiny, dirty grocery stores in Boston and the not so friendly ones in Seattle. I was so excited to see the tea rusk brand that my parents have always stocked in the pantry at home and some rotis that are from Canada that I had tried up there this summer.. It's a Indian grocery store with a small food area where you can try some of the Indian dishes they serve there. For grocery shopping I think it is a nice place as they have most of the indian vegetable, frozen items, spices, and snacks. The food they serve is decent in taste and is better than some of the other Indian grocery stores nearby but my main issue here is that the lack cleanliness and I have observed this many times. I would suggest you to take out whatever you want to eat from here as the dining area is not too clean and is very small. There sure was a lot hidden inside this place. From the street you have no idea that they have a vegetarian restaurant in the rear nor how large the store actually is. As far as the store goes it seems well stocked a bit pricey but the items are rare and make for a nice change of pace. You can save a lot of money by buying your spices here though so it all equals out I think. They have a wide assortment of incense as well. The restaurant section is nice, a TV is going with Bollywood videos which are always fun to watch! All the items are vegetarian and the selection is not bad. I tried the house signature dish - crazy chaat - even though I had no clue what I was ordering. It was a good choice, though something more to be split with a friend than had as a whole meal. I might have to revise them up to four stars one day, but I will go a few more times first - I need half stars! read more

This is only for the food that I had here, the pani puri and the infamous bhatura... I have never noticed that a shop existed in this place and we happened to accidently look at it and the food seemed to have good reviews, so why not.. We ordered the bhatura that everyone raved about and as usual pani puri.. I make sure I get that in any place that serves no matter how it tastes.. Bhatura was amazing.. I could have probably just eaten it by itself.. Soft not so oily bhatura served with yummy chole, must try.. The pani puri was decent too, the water was a perfect sweet spicy tangy mixture than most places I am used to in the US.. I will return to try some more of their food read more

Heads up for anyone ordering that they have recently reduced the number of bathuras in the their chole bathure plate to just one bathura. Two bathure is a standard per plate anywhere I have eaten and used to be same at this establishment as well. I ordered dinner for five people yesterday and was surprised to see only half the quantity of food I expected. It was too late to call and order more since they were closed so we ended up cooking anyway :(. They have recently reduced the price of the plate by one dollar and reduced the quantity of food by half. Of course, you cannot order another bathura for a dollar more :). With so many good options for Indian food in the area this place keeps going lower in my list of go-to places. read more

I love the food here. It is my favorite Indian food in the Portland area. It is all vegetarian and authentic :) I really am happy with there buffet ish setup. They have a great set of options for entrees and then all the good extras like pickle and desert. I like being able to grab a few groceries while I am there, too. The staff is helpful and accommodating (always happy to answer q's and sub GF stuff). This is probably my favorite place to eat locally. My wife came home from this Indian grocery with a bag full of the stuff she used to get back at Little India in Artesia, CA: cardamon, chile flakes, rose water, coconut oil, etc. She's been looking for a place to stock her Indian spice tray for a while and this store will certainly fill the bill. They also had the incense and sandalwood soap she likes. I loved the samosas she brought home in her other bag. Those were some huge samosas--almost as big as my fist and filled with tasty deliciousness. Good stuff! Among the several varieties that Indian cuisine has to offer, 'chaat' is probably my favorite. Since I spend most of my time in Salt Lake City where chaat is as an almost alien concept, I feel much deprived and try to make up for it as much as possible whenever I visit Portland. That being said, I'm surprised that I am yet to try the much acclaimed chaat houses in downtown Portland. I suppose the reason for that being this grocery store called India Direct located in Beaverton. They also house a small restaurant inside which goes by the name of India sweets and spices (http://indiasweetsandspices-oregon.com/default.aspx) where you get yourself some real tasty chat. The proximity of this location works well for me and they usually do a good job of keeping me happy. Their chaats are as good as any I have had in the US. I really like their chole baturas. So much so that, I go there with the sole intention of only buying groceries, I start craving for chole baturas and end up eating one! Coupled with a TV dishing out Bollywood videos, I feel at home, if only for a few minutes. Not that they are not without their faults. I remember eating samosas over here with no salt in the stuffing. Not much you can do about it when that happens but it was probably just an exception. As a grocery store, they are usually well stocked with Indian groceries and the prices are what you would expect. They rent out Hindi movies (DVDs) as well. And oh yes, I tend to walk the fine line of temptation when it comes to their selection of Indian sweets. read more

I have tried the food at this place quite a few times for dine-in and takeout. The Chaat items like Samosa, Dahi papri chat, Crazy Chat are all pretty good. I also like their Chole Bhatura which is very good for just $6/plate. Most of their Chaat items are quite filling and you will love this place if you like spicy indian food. The grocery items are arranged a little haphazard unlike Apna Bazaar which is very neat and organized. I dont go to this place much for grocery items and mainly go for their Chaat and sweets. If you love authentic indian food, go! This is definitely the most authentic indian food I've had in Portland. They have their menu available online, and you can call in ahead of time to place an order for pick up. I've done this a few times, and I always intend to take photos but then start eating before that happens. No matter what you get, make sure you get a cup of their chai. I know it's in Beaverton, but it's such a short hop from downtown once you're on the 26 that you'd barely even know (unless you go around 5/6pm obviously). There are also some fun items in the grocery store that I like to stock up on: - paneer! - nanak's frozen ras malai (just try it! incredible!) - green chilis ALSO - if you look closely and you're lucky, they have a garam masala spice mix that is a bag of all of the various spices used in garam masala that you grind yourself. IT IS OUTRAGEOUS! It's super interesting to see all the various spices that go into this mix, and the level of fragrance and flavor that comes from a fresh ground blend is incomparable to anything else. By far the best Indian food I've had in Portland. Especially for the money. I especially recommend the potato cutlet and chutney app - it blew my mind (and was essentially a $6 meal). Located in a strip mall surrounded by gyms, it looks small from the outside. Inside is a large Indian Grocery store selling a large selection of spices, herbs, lentils, beans, flours, fresh vegetables and rice. They even have spices in large containers, should you need five pounds of tumeric. They are also a restaurant with some truly delicious food. You order at the counter they bring the food to your table. This is not a white table cloth place, you come here for the food, not the service. You may find better service at a regular Indian restaurant, but you won't find better food. Warning, the kitchen is closed on Mondays. read more

Service: 4* Very nice & friend people, the guy took my order was also attending the cash counter (it is a grocery store) and kept promising me that it will be delivered in 5 mins (the perpetual desi 5 mins), he was very courteous which made me excuse him for all the delay. Took 20 mins to deliver the aloo paratha and another 15 minutes to pay the bill (long line, common checkout counter for restaurant & grocery). Do not come here if you are in a hurry (give atleast 30-45 mins for service & checkout) Ambiance 3* It is a Grocery, so what else do you expect ? Though I wouldn't describe it as 'fully stocked', it did have a good selection of Indian Groceries (including frozen items). The person who usually makes the dosas was not in the store that day, so we had to settle for pakora.. which wasn't settling at all. The guy at the counter was rude. I've never had Indian desserts and I wanted to try a few things. I told him i wanted to order like 1 of each dessert they had. He smirked and was smug about it and said "only one" and I said "yes" just 1'of each dessert i wanted to try. As a customer I believe I have the right to how many I ordered even if it's 1 item or 12. This place has been one of our favorite places to go for their hot foods over the years. We don't get there often as we would like, but we always get one of the combination platters because the main dish changes so we never get the same thing twice, other than fantastic flavors! For the size of the store, they pack a lot into it from spices to jarred Indian pickles to frozen food to snack food, it's our "go to" Indian store! This is a standard indian store that also sells food on the side. Overall, considering the number of Indians in and around the Portland Metro area there are not that many good indian places. This is one of the better ones for north indian food. Except for the indian food supplies that I get from here this place offers some very good chole bhature (nearly the best in this area) and exceptional ras malai (milk based sweet). There crazy chat and some of the thali's they serve are also very good. There selection of other indian sweets is also good. 5 star for their Samosas. One of the best I've eaten and consistently awesome. Also always hot and fresh. Chole Batoora is our next favorite. Other chats like Kachori, pakoda are great as well.
