Garlic Chili Dosa to go
Mike C.

The Dosa are amazing. I discovered this gem through a coworker, and she swears by them for the authenticity. I agree with the other reviewers that they have plenty of Indian street food and great prices. I've sampled 6 or 7 menu items, and loved them all. It's fun to do a food trip with someone familiar with the fare. Highly recommend the garlic chili dosa if you like spicy, or another dosa if not. Also, the samosa are great here. It's a good thing this place isn't downtown or I'd be there far too often.

There's a little vegetarian restaurant, Indian style (cleaner).

This grocery is very tight and claustrophobic, but pretty clean and well organized. Good combination of South Asian ingredients, spices, produce, canned jarred and frozen goods. It's also a little veg "fast" Indian food place with some different dishes than the usual Indian restaurant in America fare. They seem to specialize in Southern Indian, the Chief of Staff and I were pleasantly surprised to find a very authentic tasting Chettinad vegetable curry. Around the turn of the last century into mid 20th century the Chettinars of Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu made little personal fortunes in finance and trade, they were a merchant clan-caste. Now scattered far from their homeland, the fascinating and beautiful Hindu-Tamil-Art-Deco architecture of their mansions make for a sad but still impressive ghost town. Their cuisine lives on, it's not spicy hot but rather sweet as the result of influence from the French in Pondicherry and spices indigenous to Southern India (chili peppers actually came from the New World, the Tainos who were killed by Columbus, so there's an ironic Indian connection). Too much information? Can't help it, I'm a sociology professor. So unlike the somewhat inconsistent version at Maharaja, you can get a pretty Chettinad Chettinad curry here. Don't expect fancy, the dining area reminds me of Southern India (less insects, cleaner), I don't mind eating here, but you might want to get it to go. Actually they also sell Indian tiffin here, you might have fun taking it home in an actual Indian lunch box.

I had the dosa and it was awful. Tasted like rubber. Maybe it was just a bad day...but I would not recommend.

I've had the dosas and the chohle bhature here several times and have enjoyed my food every single time.

It's really sad that there aren't many options for groceries right in this neighborhood. In saying…read morethat, Sendik's really takes advantage of this fact and raises their usual store prices for this "Fresh2Go" location. Not much more than a convenience store without the attached gas station. Carries some staples, not many, mostly niche products, some private label products, and some fresh produce and meats...but very few. The salad bar is started fresh on Monday mornings and is then covered and let to wilt through the week. The bakery items are usually stale, which means these WOULD have been discounted in a regular store, where at the "Fresh2Go" location they actually JACK the prices UP and sell lower quality items! Most of the staff though, are pretty friendly. Especially to regular, local residents. I am always greeted warmly when I walk by the check-out and even in aisles, when they're stocking, they have been helpful. It's just the shameful use of the highest priced items, that are then jacked up in prices even more for the Marquette Student crowd. Sendik's is truly shady in this regard! Not just the Marquette students live in this neighborhood, there are local area, year round residents who are being terrible gRaped by this exaggerated pricing! The staff even admits that the pricing at the "Fresh2Go" location is higher than their full service locations, and their website proves it as well if you try to order ahead. The stale baked goods and wilted salad bar is so SKETCH...and then they Jack the Prices UP from their full service locations? SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

Everything was overpriced and the people working there seemed miserable and rude. I had someone…read moreclap their hands at me while I was trying to figure something out. To that pathetic worker: grow up. You're an adult, if you can't talk to people without acting like a child, then you shouldn't be around adults.

Very good Southeast Asian grocery with a great selection of frozen fish, frozen prepared Southeast…read moreAsian foods, produce, and Southeast Asian rice. A little less choice in Far East Asian ingredients, and little to nothing of interest to South Asian cooks. The assumption might be that anyone shopping here is feeding a clan because it's hard to get only enough vegetables for two humans, but the prices for fresh produce are so good a little waste doesn't bother me too much (especially since I compost). If you are single and not Asian, and think you're okay with American supermarket instant ramen, you need to rethink cheap eats and try some instant noodle soup from here. A few coins more will get you much tastier instant noodle soups, especially the ones without good English translation on the packages. Add some of the fresh vegetables and tofu or bean sprouts you get here and you can make a cheap meal nutritious and well balances. I guess technically bean sprouts are vegetables but noodle soups require more than two added ingredients I think.

Their pork belly and chicken are a great deal and I love trying their new products in their frozen section (they always have the coolest ice cream)! They don't have a ton of fresh produce, but their cabbage and bok choy are such a great deal for a huge bag! They also have a pretty big snack and drink section as well!
