I recently brought my cat to this animal hospital and I am extremely disappointed with my experience. Before any services were performed, I was presented with and signed an itemized estimate showing a specific total cost. After the X-rays were completed, I was informed that the images were inconclusive and would need to be sent to a specialist for review--resulting in over $300 in additional charges that were never disclosed beforehand. My concern is not that additional diagnostics were recommended, but that I was never informed there could be extra costs associated with an inconclusive X-ray result. Had this possibility been explained in advance, I could have made an informed decision before services were rendered. Transparent communication about pricing is a basic expectation in veterinary care. Adding significant charges after the fact without discussing the potential cost beforehand feels misleading, unprofessional, and unfair to clients who are already dealing with the stress of caring for a sick pet. I would encourage the hospital to improve its communication regarding estimates and obtain client approval before incurring substantial additional expenses. read more

If you're not going to Ravenwood in Port Orange, you should be. I left Indian River animal clinic in Edgewater this morning after waiting to see Dr Garrett for two weeks for my limping dog, whom she had examined a month earlier. I was told oooops, Dr Garret is not there as promised when we arrived. Okay. Then the consistently nasty receptionist kept telling me she has no answers when I asked questions about the treatment we were about to have. I chalked it up to a high strung, very immature, little girl in probably her THIRTIES, who was obviously overworked and underpaid, most likely, and takes it out on customers. But I needed help for my dog and was now feeling desperate and nervous, so we sat down, waited, but suddenly decided that the stress was just too much for the life I choose for myself and my dog, besides the extreme costs they charge for everything and really below level good care.. . And that I don't need to be abused this way, and really, if this is how they treat the owner who pays the bill, I wonder how much they really care about the animals/patients and in this case...MY DOG... Eventually, we decided to simply STAND UP, WALK OUT and NEVER GO BACK. At INDIAN RIVER ANIMAL CLINIC, they just don't care and are a mess in some way, every time we have gone in. They do not have their act together. They over charge for everything and double charge. They charge for a nail clip and the tech who does it lol?!?? So is your dog supposed to clip his own nails?!? Dr Garrett owns it and beville animal hospital too, but she takes it out of your pet's college fund for sure! And trust me, if it's good for my dog, I'll pay a ransom if o had to, but I've been there for over a year with about a dozen visits for nail clips and exams, it was always a strain with subpar service, attitude and a chaotic front desk, but I gave them a chance. A year.... My boy will be 13 next month, and the level of care and lack of professionalism is not what anyone deserves...certainly not us. So, Indian River animal clinic is "JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH" folks. Not for my dog. Not for anyone's pets. I called Ravenwood in port orange, a half hour drive away, and they told me to come right in. They saw us with a very thorough exam, head to toe! Took five X-rays, sedated him and reversed the sedation, went over the X-rays with me RIGHT THERE, and gave him med for inflammation. All in one hours time. The cost at RAVENWOOD was seriously hundreds less than I was quoted at Indian River FOR LESS X-RAYS and no SEDATION. At RAVENWOOD,from the first contact by phone, to reception, to tech, to doctor, it was a fresh, beautiful, clean and KIND experience. Thank you God! It's worth the drive from Edgewater/New Smyrna to be treated well and with respect, where well paid professionals are happy to be running the show to give your pet the very best. Wednesday's first visit to the vet since we found each other, Dr. Long and her staff are wonderful people and handled our kitty with such great care. She's still a little skittish after living in the wild but continues to adapt, and visiting the vet will be routine so it's great to find a veterinary office that is compassionate and patient. After a well-being check, flea treatment, blood work, a shot and nail clipping which is all new to her she seemed calm and relaxed which is definitely a credit to the staff here. This is a very clean facility and the parking lot check-in process allows you to stay in your vehicle until a examination room is ready so there is no lobby full of pets waiting their turn. Dr. Long did a scan on her and found she had been chipped and is attempting to contact her former owner which is the right thing to do but for now there's been no response, she adopted us while we were camping and found her cold and hungry and after checking around the area it appeared she had been living outdoors on her own for quite sometime or had been abandoned, a campground employee told us she had been seen wondering around scavenging for food for several weeks so we took her in, although we currently have no pets we understood what we were in for and couldn't turn her away. Dr. Long explained the process so we'll wait and see if the former owner reaches out, we will do the right thing if they do and return her if that's the case and justify it as if we're just fostering her although it will be hard. I went to IR clinic today. I have a appointment for tomorrow but I asked to reschedule for today if possible. They said they have availability for today and i went. Clinic visit $60 (what they told me) but when i wnet today they charged $95. And they said the reason was i came as a urgent. This is super tricky. So be ready for over charging. read more

shame on you. If I could give negative stars i would. Saturday my senior 12 yr old palliative care cat (, diagnosed by a vet in Nov 24 with advanced HCM, gallop heart rhythm, CHF stage 3 CKD, and a spindle cell tumor on his face on heart meds etc ) suddenly threw a thrombosis embolism blood clot getting paralysis to rear legs and was open mouth breathing. I had to be his voice and give him his angel wings. I called Indian River , it was at least 1/2 hour before closing and explained more in detail about my boy. I told them my neighbor bragged about them. I begged them for me to bring him in,(talked with him next day and oh, his last experience there with a pyometra case was bad too). I told the receptionist I am 3 minutes away literally off us 1 up the road. The receptionist said she had to ask the vet. She came back on the phone and said the vet will not do it, so sorry. I said I am begging you , he is dying having a thrombosis embolism and can't breath. all I got was I am sorry. . I called Newmans vet , Edgewater office (my vets office was closed). It was now 1:46 pm before Newman's 2 pm closing. Newmans staff told me to bring him in immediately. I gave them his medical history and 5 heart meds info including hi gallop heart rhythm. my boy gain his angel wings with peace and dignity he deserved. I have been thru this journey of HCM and clots with 2 other cats. he needed his angel wings asap. Don't take your animals to this clinic!!! My senior dogs treatment was mismanaged and I had to take him to Banfield Animal Hospital in Orlando only to find out he was dying....Within 30 minutes they found a large mass that had ruptured and he was bleeding out....Both doctors at Indian River Animal Hospital were unable to diagnose the anemic condition for over 3 weeks!!! And after losing my baby, I asked Dr. Garrett to call me to discuss what happened....it has been 10 days...not a word! I called several times and was told that she had called me and left messages!!! Rushed in - I asked a question about their "work-in" policy after being told I may have to pay extra. All of that is fine but she was very defensive about any question of said policy. I refused the work in but called back in because my boy was not looking happy When I see my chart I see that the only thing really explained is that I refused this "work-in"... Thinking it was strange I started paying attention & denied the xray before consultation, stating I would do it depending on what the doctor found. They claim a dog was dying which could make sense for why I was in the office for 2 hours but after getting annoyed I decide to leave & that's where their true colors show. Instead of checking me out she immediately picks up the phone and calls 911 when I was in no way a problem. Be careful around here because if you speak your mind or have emotions to how someone treats you a Karen gets upset. Lack of value - my last review was 5 stars for this establishment. What I forgot was all the meds I had to deny last time my dog didn't need They are money hungry cranks Go to Eastwood Animal Hospital where they actually care & put your pet first They won't get upset make a note about it and treat you different like this place did. I called about five different veterinarian clinics to see if they treat bearded dragons. This specific clinic said that they do treat them. I told them the issue with my bearded dragon and they told me to bring my bearded dragon in. I was sitting in the waiting room for about 10 to 15 minutes and I realized my bearded dragon wasn't breathing anymore so I told the front desk and the lady took my bearded dragon to the back, they put me in a room asked me a few questions about my bearded dragon came back and told me that my bearded dragon still has a heartbeat barely, but they also came with a list of things that they think they should do to my bearded dragon in order for my bearded dragon to possibly survive. The bill came up to $1000. I told him I cannot pay for that so I surrendered my bearded dragon to them. That way my daughter doesn't have to deal with the fact of bringing home a lizard that was basically at its end. When it came time to pay, they charge me $135, because they said that I had an emergency reptile visit. They never told me that there was a price difference if I bring my reptile in that day or if I make an appointment. I found that out at the register so moral of the story is do not take your pets here unless he wants to get raped with the price , with no grease ‍ read more

Dr. Garrett killed my cat. Her negligence directly caused my otherwise healthy 5-year-old cat's death. Don't bring your animals here for anything except maybe routine vaccinations, because the vets are not competent to treat pets if your animals are sick! They'll tell you your pet is fine and let your pet die in agony a few hours later. I've had multiple issues with the vets and staff here over the years not actually caring about sick animals, but they were the only vet anywhere nearby open on Saturday, December 23rd when I woke up to my cat Eggy suddenly being very sick, throwing up and acting very weak and out of it. I took her in at 11am, Dr. Garrett diagnosed her with gastritis, and said Eggy must just have had an upset stomach from eating something that didn't agree with her. Dr. Garrett gave her fluids, prescribed anti-nausea medications, and sent her home. Eggy declined so rapidly after bringing her home that she was dead within 4 hours of leaving Indian River Animal Clinic. She was in visible pain the entire time, struggling to breathe, cold to the touch, and mewling from her pain. I tried to let her rest for a bit, hoping she'd start feeling better, but 3 hours after we'd left Indian River Animal Clinic Eggy was so deathly ill I left to take her to the Emergency Animal Hospital in Daytona Beach. We didn't even make it, she died on the way. The staff at the emergency vet were incredulous that Dr. Garrett didn't even run any blood work for Eggy to indicate the cause of her illness, and said there was definitely either an underlying condition that Dr. Garrett didn't notice, or poisoning that Dr. Garrett didn't treat, because just gastritis would never have caused Eggy to die so quickly. Eggy was only 5. She was too young to die, and especially too sweet to die in so much pain like this. Her death is entirely on Dr. Garrett's hands. She was dismissive of Eggy's illness, and, as we were the last patients to leave before the office closed for Christmas vacation, I wouldn't be surprised if Dr. Garrett just hadn't wanted to bother with actually looking at Eggy. She probably just wanted to go home for the break instead of doing her job and saving a very sick cat. Well, while she got to enjoy her Christmas, her negligence meant I had to spend the holidays mourning. Please, don't take your animals here if they're actually sick. I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Dr. Garrett neither cares nor is competent to treat sick animals. The staff don't seem to care either. No one at the office will call me back or answer my phone calls, and I wouldn't be surprised if they marked my number down to ignore. PLEASE take your pets somewhere, anywhere else if they're sick. They won't survive if you take them here. read more

This dr and his staff took the cat immediately, kept him 3 days that included surgery and MANY stitches, and cared for him like it was their own Cat. They were kind, thoughtful and caring! Dr. Vanis diagnosed asthma within a few moments of viewing the x rays I had taken at Newman in Edgewater, where the Vet couldn't read the x rays and wanted me to take the picture to a specialist for$200 or more.... To read an x Ray!!! Common sense alone is just take another x Ray if yours is unreadable. He treats my kitty with a steroid injection when ever necessary. The rating is 4 stars rather than 5 as I've been asking Dr. Vanis to do something to cure an ongoing ear infection, 8 months now and cat still has ear problems!!! Dr. Vanis is too casual about the infection.. I'm going to soon find another Vet. But I do love Dr Vanis he is caring and tolerant of my 20 pound hostile cat. Hostile because first Newman clipped nails too close and hurt him on both front paws. Also hostile because Dr. Vanis' techs used to scruff him to carry stating:" their mother carried them this way". .. NOT AT 20 Pounds!!!! He was being strangled every time she took him to be weighed. New owner having trouble. We had been with dr vanis for over 40 yrs. Roxie. My 18 yr old yorkie had heart trouble. We transitioned over to new owners last fall. We had been for 4-5 visits since then. None have been very good I had talked with clinic about the procedure for end of life services when rox would need it. The other day we were turned away because they were to busy. Current patient, dying of heart failure and they r to busy! Today this was my dog, tomorrow it could be yours. I am very disappointed with the new staff at Indian River Animal Clinic. Dr. Vanis retired recently and a new vet has taken over. I took my cat for her yearly shots recently and requested her nails be clipped and her butt shaved down (she is a long haired cat and sometimes has debris from her litter box). Neither of those things were done. I made another appointment a couple weeks later to have that done and when I picked her up they still had not clipped her nails in spite of her being sedated. I have not met the new vet because of the "social distancing" but they need to get their act together if they want to stay in business. When I thought all hope was lost for one of my chihuahuas who broke his jaw and no one would see him Dr Vanis rushed him in and was able to save his life!!!! My 16-year-old toy poodle developed a strange cough and I took him to my regular vet in Edgewater but they could not figure out anything so sent me home. Then I took him to a vet in NSB and they said my dog needed a dental, which would cost $1200 + extra to pull any teeth. Wow, I didn't have that kind of money but I guess to save his life I would go into debt. But a friend recommended Dr. Vannis. It was easy to get an appointment. Dr. Vannis knew right away my dog had tracheal bronchitis and gave him some shots that really helped. He said my dog's bad teeth were a problem and he did a dental and pulled a bunch of teeth. The cost was $308... less than 1/4 of the other vet. Plus, my dog came through the surgery fine even at his age and is now resting at home comfortably. He even ate chicken the first day! read more

When I accidentally cut my golden retrievers ear in a clipping accident I took her to my usual vet who happened to be working on another emergency. I cut an artery so the bleeding could only be stopped by direct pressure. Since dr Newman was next door I took her there. We waited in a room for nearly 30 minutes all the while keeping a tight grip on her ear. I could hear the doc in the hall way talking and laughing with an acquaintance I guess. While I sat there they chatted and laughed. I got up and still holding her ear I managed to call dr Vanis. They said bring her in thank god. Dr Vanis put her out and fixed her ear. I was so grateful I began taking both my Holden's to him and I'm happy I did. They are never too busy to take care of your pet. My other vet was always very busy and waiting time was unacceptable. She should have had another vet on staff but needless to say I am very happy with dr Vanis and staff now. read more

I wouldn't even give a 1 at this point, but I have to choose a start. I have taken my animals to Dr. Vanis since I was in my 20s. Until yesterday, I trusted this veterinarian. I brought my cat in because he had some redirected aggression at me from seeing a feral cat (he scratched my arm). I was concerned there might be an underlying medical problem as that is what I read. I wanted to rule that out before behavior. I was charged more than an office visit and my cat was never taken from his carrier! Eye contact nor any kind of visual examination was even attempted; yet, I was charged $45 (more than an office visit) for what the doctor called an 'extended consultation' (all of-maybe 10 minutes of listening to him talk about 'bottle fed baby' cats--didn't know that was veterinary science). He told me to keep him inside (they wrote for 2 weeks apparently-but no one told me that), but he's already an inside cat. Not a plan of treatment-a fact of his life! How is that a plan of treatment? He told me he didn't know about the Jackson Galaxy holistic stress reliever drops I was using, but to keep doing it. I come to find out that no one listened to me at all! They wrote down that my cat had already seen a behaviorist, was an outside cat, bit me (he only scratched) and had an altercation with a feral cat--never happened-never came out of my mouth! Apparently they don't listen. They acted as though he was some rabid dog that would bite them because he scratched me upon seeing/smelling the other cat. It freaked him out. My neighborhood has a feral cat colony, possums, raccoons, and so on. Cats are territorial. He was calm and sedate in his carrier-never made a peep. Yet, he was a rabid animal (actually an indoor cat who is due for a rabies shot). I wanted to be a good pet parent and make sure there wasn't an underlying medical condition that caused this sweet cat to act out as I read it can be medical problems and he had stomach issues from allergies and post nasal back drip. They wouldn't take him out or visually examine him yet I get charged $45? Bad business practice. The tech said I had a 'mean' cat. Both the doctor and the tech talked about putting him down when they didn't even examine him? He's only 4! Nor did they even make eye contact with him. His pupils, gums, heartbeat, fur, skin--everything should've been checked at least visually for any abnormalities. Not to mention taking down inaccurate history! Why put me and him through that and charge me for nothing! I should have walked out without paying, but I am not that kind of person. I am now a 'former' customer, and he lost 5 patients from a family that has loyally gone to him with our pets. I don't make a salary like his, and that money could have gone to something more than a less than 10 minute conversation that didn't cause mental duress. Heck-I could have bought him two bottles of holistic stress drops! Steer clear of that clinic. read more
