Following a visit to the labyrinthian VA facility in Gainesville, my wife and I were considering lunch options. In looking at Yelp, we were drawn to the Indian Street Food place. Located along a building with another Indian restaurant and market and even a Vietnamese restaurant, this place has plenty of parking and quite spacious inside. We love Indian food and are always open to trying out new restaurants. We have not been to India (on the list of countries we plan on visiting) so not familiar with the street food on their menu so we opted for the more familiar options. My wife ordered the Butter Chicken combo ($20.99) and I tried one of the chef's specials, Bhatti Ka Murg combo. The combo came with basmati rice, butter naan and a desert called Gulab Jamun. My wife's combo also came with a samosa. The butter chicken was good...that sauce, which turned out to be the same sauce for the bhatti ka murg, was full of flavor. The naan was OK...nothing special and we've had much better naan. The rice serving was a bit chintzy. The desert was OK. My dish had decent flavor but definitely better dipped in that sauce. Having to content with bones from chicken thigh meat and drum stick meant I had to work for it but not too bad. While our meals had good flavors, we thought flavors and portions we had at Amrit Palace in Ocala were just as good if not better with more generous portions. We would often have leftover food to take home after a meal at Amrit. Lunch for 2 with tip was just under $54. read more

I love trying different Indian restaurants in Gainesville, and this one was really good. I came for a birthday dinner, and the menu had a HUGE variety of different dishes. My friend and I split the Samosa Chaat and the Chicken Tikka Masala combo. The Samosa Chaat was the perfect blend of refreshing, with cucumbers and yogurt sauce, and the crunch of the Samosa was perfect. It was also surprisingly filling. The Chicken Tikka Masala was good! It tasted like most Tikka Masalas I've had so no complaints! The rice portion was a little small but honestly with the bread, it was a good amount. The waiters were accommodating and the food didn't take super long to come out either and we were a party of 7. The ambiance was cozy and made it feel more authentic, and there's even an Indian market next door that we stopped by at! I ordered over the phone so I didn't even know the price until I arrived, if I had known I wouldn't have ordered it. I know Indian food is expensive but if it's $40 I would've expected a bigger portion size at least. Tikka express has better prices and quality of food than this place. Update: I went again and order the chicken pakoda and butter chicken to share. The chicken pakoda was pretty ok, I liked the sauces that came with it. Easy solid four or more. Looking forward to trying several many of the interesting dosas here someday soon; I say from having jealously spotted other patrons with them. I generally go with Chana my first time into any Indian place to sort of set a benchmark for myself and so I can report I really rather enjoyed the Chhole (Chana) here though I wish I'd ordered it add potato. It came as a chef's special, so it included, rice, papad, pickle, and a desert (gulab, methinks). Was nice. Unrushed pleasant, helpful service. Samosa's were okay. Found the naan or bread to be a light and fluffier, doughier than I'm used to and the garlic naan was somewhat faint of flavor. Was more like premade from Publix than spectacular, as should be. But, maybe that's just how they do it here is all. Menu says light and fluffy and that's what you get. What's with the cocktail napkins? Maybe they ran out of normal ones. Visiting the museums at UF and was looking for a spot for lunch. All of our group liked Indian food so we ended up at Indian Street Food. it is in a small strip mall and there was ample parking available. They are open until 3 pm for lunch and open again at 5pm for dinner. We got there a little before 2, so we were good to go. They start by bringing you a pitcher of cold water and cups. We decided to have an order of garlic naan to whet our appetites. It was served hot, deliciously chewy, and full of flavor. I opted for the Chicken Tikka Masala. it came with rice, hot sauce, naan, Papad, and two ginger cookies. The chicken was cooked perfectly, the sauce was spicy, but not overly so and was amazing to dip the fresh hot naan into to soak up its goodness. I went with a staple - the chicken tikka masala which was aromatic and creamy, but had a bell pepper to chicken ratio that was just a little too high for my liking but otherwise very solid. The plate came with papad, rice, naan, and pickle. At $19 coming in a tad on the expensive side especially with just the one naan and small bowl of rice. The papdi chaat was also pretty good but definitely just a snack, will probably need an additional dish for a filling meal. It is unique restaurant in Gainesville. I am guessing the Indian population is growing in the university town and attracted this restaurant. It good for the community. There were a few dishes is very interesting. We have to pick and choose the one we may like. We got chef special mutton curry. It come with 5 pieces bone on meat-goat meat, basmati rice, malabar porotta, papad, dessert. It is a good combo meal. The only complaint I have is the bone is big, the meat is less. This may need to change for a similar tali plate with almost $20. Price did not measure up to quantity of food. The other dish we have is the Fish Amritsari. It is fried fish with special coating. I got the Malabar Lamb Curry which was so rich and flavorful; it came with rice, bread, papas, pickle & dessert. I will say, I wish the rice portion was a little larger to match the ratio of the curry. I came here for dinner with a friend and we were immediately seated. I noticed some of the tables were spread apart for covid precautions and the silverware is individually wrapped. I ordered the dosa and it was amazing! It was crispy and the filling was delicious. It was also huge! One dosa was enough to fill me up although I wish I was still hungry so I could try the other chefs specials. I think the price is very fair. The dosa was about $10. The chefs specials are around $15 but it comes with a lot of food. I would 100% recommend any Indian food lover to try this place. The food is great and the service is fast. I would have never imagined finding a South Indian focused cuisine restaurant anywhere in Florida. (there are some with weak and thin offerings but not like this!) I am determined to try everything on their menu, because all of the food I have tried is powerfully flavorful. Interestingly enough, my favorite item here is just a plain dosa. Mostly because their coconut chutney is to die for. Cheese is my main love, and you can have almost anything here covered in cheese. And, you would never realize that the entire menu here is all vegetarian. Don't even think about missing meat, it is not needed because the food is so fulfilling. My wife and I had been quite excited to try this place for a while and were not disappointed. The food was really great and they have a lot of vegetarian options which is always a welcome sight for my wife. Most of the menu is South Indian cuisine, along with some Indo-Chinese. I ordered the Paneer Makhani Dosa, which was a dosa filled with a paneer curry, served with sambar (a soup) and three chutneys. I had a hard time choosing which chutney to eat because all three were so good. We ended up finishing them up with some naan. My wife had the Gobi Manchurian, which was also good. A word of advice: if you are not familiar with Indian food, it usually has a little spice to it. Even things on the menu with no peppers next to it can be a little spicy to those not prepared, and when they put peppers next to the menu items THEY MEAN IT. Indian food is my favorite. I eat it quite often & have cooked a few dishes myself. This restaurant offers VERY GOOD Indian food, but prices were higher than comparable (but more upscale) restaurants. Service was quite good, but due to thick accents & masks we had great difficulty understanding the two Indian gentlemen who waited on us. Unfortunately, the menu is written for those very familiar w/ Indian foods; it is not user-friendly. It doesn't offer descriptions of the entrees, although photos of each are present. I eat Indian often, but even I wasn't sure about many entrees. Our three dishes & two appetizers were VERY GOOD. Each entree came w/ far less rice than the many entrees I've eaten over the last decade, but the rice was good. The GARLIC NAAN @ $2.49 was good as well, but thicker than most & it lacked garlic. (Our server may have brought us regular Naan instead.) The VEGETABLE SAMOSA appetizer @ $4.99 was EXCELLENT-- large w/ a great crust, stuffed perfectly, & delicious. (We ordered two!) My MUTTON CURRY @ $17.99 was very tender & flavorful. My son's $18.99 CHICKEN PERATTU was also tender & delicious, & his girlfriend (brand new to Indian food) loved her mild BUTTER CHICKEN @ $18.99. All entrees were accompanied by a small mango dessert (which I opted out of). I requested a little dish of RAITA (to cool down the spice level), & noticed the $2.99 charge on my bill. No other restaurant has ever charged me for it. There are tables & booths available-- see pics. The restaurant was clean. Most patrons were of Indian decent, which is often a good sign that the food is good. (And it was.) I definitely liked the food, but I will probably not return on future visits to the area. Although I recommend this 4.5 star restaurant, if I'm going to pay higher prices on entrees, I want more upscale decor. Wow! My husband and I have been looking for a great Indian restaurant in Gainesville, and this is now our favorite spot. We came for dinner on Saturday night on a whim and were impressed with our entire meal. To start, we tried the Veggie Samosas and Paneer Pakoda. The samosas were yummy with the signature crunchy pastry shell around a potato and pea filling. The Paneer Pakoda is fried cheese, a similar idea to "cheese curds" for those who aren't familiar. They are cut into little triangles and are a great appetizer. It comes with two dipping sauces, the green is spicy, and the burgundy is a sweeter sauce that I very much enjoy. For our main dishes, I ordered the Butter Chicken, which came with Naan, basmati rice, Papad, Pickle, and dessert, and my husband ordered the Varutharacha Lamb. My Butter Chicken was delicious. The Naan was wonderful - airy, light, and fluffy! I loved the sauce; it's a tomato and onion cream sauce with spices. It wasn't too spicy for me -- and I am sensitive to spice levels. The basmati rice was also yummy, but I wish they would serve more with the dish. I also liked the dessert, a round dough ball with a honey drizzle. My husband enjoyed his Varutharacha Lamb. I ordered the Butter Chicken with rice, naan, hot sauce and papad. I generally prefer naan since it's nice and soft but I really enjoyed the papad. It was crispy and delicious. We ordered garlic naan as an appetizer which was a great start to the meal. It came out nice and hot and was incredible. My sister ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. It looked and smelled amazing and she said it tasted as good as it looked. We were sitting, talking and enjoying our food not realizing how late it was. They closed at 3:00 and we were still there. Relative to other options around this area, I found this to be a place serving a great variety of Indian cuisine for a reasonable price. I like that the menu had several northern street food dishes as well as popular South Indian dishes. We tried the Gobi Manchurian, pani puri, Mysore masala dosa, and pav bhaji. I have to note, none of these items were mind blowing, however they delivered enough on flavor to satisfy a craving. Five stars for the South Indian food, four for their more standard dishes on the "chef's specials" and "complete" dinners. I had an Indian room-mate in college in San Francisco so we went around to all kinds of Indian restaurants in SF and beyond. I learned to cook Indian cuisines as well, bit by bit over time. Having a bunch of madcap Indians always around our small apartment certainly helped in getting honest and accurate opinions on it all. So when I saw Indian Street Food's menu, I was pleasantly surprised: this was the type of restaurant I'd expect in somewhere like Hayward or Fremont, California and not lil ol' Gainesville. You don't see much dedicated South Indian here nor restaurants offering thali and snacks and not just lunch and dinner menus. And the South Indian specialities are excellent: idli, dosas, sambar, and all. Their samosas also are top-notch with thinner crusts/dough than most and delicate, fresh, flavors that come through. All the chutneys taste homemade, there is just a lot of real care that seems to go into everything. However, they have "chef's specials" which are meals of a traditional Indian main course, rice, naan, a papad, and some form of sweet and a tiny, tiny, tiny bit of pickle--which sounds like a good deal but for around $18 the portions of all but the main course are very miserly indeed. Like, less than a spoonful of pickle, one ball of gulab jamun, and not enough rice for as much of the main dish they supply. I mean, normally because I cook so much Indian food at home I have rice made up, I have several pickles, too, but it just feels like a good idea but kind of cut short. The little ball of gulab jamun by its lonesome in a container just looked kind of pitiful. That all noted, the South Indian items? Awesome. And everything, absolutely everything, seems homemade and made with care. This hot new restaurant is an amazing new place for vegetarian Indian food, in Gainesville. I will say, being from a South Indian family, I've eaten my fair share of Indian food both in my own home and at tons of restaurants around the US and in India. I will say, its hard to beat my Mom's cooking. But keeping that perspective in mind, this restaurant is not bad at all. You can definitely find a large variety of dishes, and some with their own unique spin on them. We ordered the Pani Poori, the Pav Bhaji, the Mysore Masala Dosa, and the Gobi Manchurian. The Pani poori was much better than any other that I've tasted in Gainesville, but the pani (water) was a little too sweet for my tastes. I prefer a spicy pani. The pav bhaji was similarly too sweet and buttery - but I can't really complain as I did get the "Buttery pav bhaji." The bhaji was flavorful, and the buns were doused in butter and the right level of cripsy vs. fluffy. The Mysore Masala dosa was a bit lacking. Although the dosa was quite large, I think this took away from the inherent crispiness that I love in a dose, which is harder to keep when the dosa is so large. The masala was rather bland, but the Sambar on the side was solid. The chutneys all seemed a little too watered down.
