This campground has been recently renovated and was only about 1/3 occupied when we stopped in on a Tuesday in late July. The sites are spacious with paved parking for your vehicle, a picnic table and a fire ring. The campground host was super friendly and even gave us firewood for s'mores! It appears to be popular with the fishing crowd, and there is a boat ramp at the base of the campground as well as a trail that loops around the small lake. Nice and quiet; clear, clean water; only a few mosquitoes. We would absolutely stay again. Directions: From I-5 at Weed, CA travel northeast on State Hwy 97 approx 35 miles Ball Mtn Road. Very dirty since it's all dirt and can you say attack of the flies & yellow jackets. So prepare for that I would take a yellow jacket & fly trap because it's insane. Ground squirrels & chipmunks run wild in the camps we actually ged a ground squirrel right from our hand it was a friendly trusting little feller. Got to see deer twice in camp just grazing away. That was cool. Good campsite. $15 a night ain't a bad deal. No showers but they do have porter potty style bathrooms & potable water.

For tent camping, what I loved was being able to set up on grass - which is a huge luxury, keeps dust down and offers an extra layer of padding. The facilities were very clean and though there was some wear and tear, they were super nice. This place is like being in a hotel after camping in forest service camp grounds with no amenities. Though I didn't plan on it, I ended up going to Lava Beds National Monument, which is just 10 minutes away. I went because Barbara, the owner/host gave me a map and said there was some must see caves and hiking. I really enjoyed my stay and will be back with my wife who enjoys more refined camping. It's a great balance between nature and everyday essentials, like water and electricity.

The kids really enjoyed the playground (but be warned, they will come back extra dirty- yay for the showers). We only have a truck camper that has a battery with solar, but still booked a site with full electric just in case we needed an extra charge (we did use electricity for our air fryer though). One downside to me was not having a camp fire ring or a table (luckily we had our own, but we don't always take one)... but it wasn't a deal breaker. Pamela was very friendly, and when we came to the on site store for something we ran out of, unfortunately it wasn't available in the store, she did however get us what we needed from her personal house. To be fair, this was one of the busiest weekends I've ever seen there. As a business owner myself, I understand that on extremely busy days things don't always go as planned, and because of that I was willing to overlook quite a bit. We stayed in Chipmunk Condo Cabin #3. The cabin had a musty smell and a very small bathroom. The beach area was great for families, and my daughter absolutely loved it. The biggest issue was the food and customer service. Around 2 PM on our first day, we stopped to get pizza for lunch while waiting for our cabin and found out they were already sold out. Since there aren't many nearby dining options, I stopped by the lodge around 6:45 PM to specifically ask when they stopped seating guests. The two younger employees seemed annoyed and unsure but eventually told me the last seating would be at 7:45 PM. I explained that I was traveling with my wife, a 2-year-old, and a 3-month-old, and that driving an hour to Ashland or Klamath Falls for dinner wasn't ideal. We hurried back to the cabin, got ready, and returned around 7:35 PM, only to be immediately told they couldn't seat us because they were too busy and had a large party. My question was simple: Why wasn't I told that when I specifically came in earlier to ask? Had they explained the situation, I would have gladly come sooner. After asking to speak with a manager, who never actually came out, we were suddenly able to be seated. Once inside, there were several empty tables available, which made the whole situation even more confusing. Our server seemed annoyed from the moment we sat down. We decided to order our food to go instead of dining in, and even that seemed to bother him. When I politely provided feedback about the miscommunication, his response was essentially, "Well, we got you seated, didn't we?" That completely missed the point. The issue wasn't whether we eventually got a table. The issue was being given incorrect information and then nearly being turned away despite arriving before the stated seating cutoff. The next morning, we discovered mice had chewed through snacks we had left on the kitchen counter overnight. There are no cabinets available to store food. When I reported it, the manager apologized and explained that even the cabin she lives in on-site has mice because they're in the forest. While that explanation makes sense, it didn't make my wife feel any better with a 3-month-old baby sleeping in the cabin. The second day, pizza was available for lunch and was actually very good. The older gentleman working there was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, when we returned around 6 PM for dinner, pizza was sold out again. My wife then tried ordering dinner to go from the lodge and was given a completely different takeout menu that excluded many of the better dinner options, including items we had ordered to go the night before. When she asked if she could order from the regular dinner menu, she was told absolutely not. The inconsistency made no sense. At that point, we'd had enough. Between the restaurant issues, the mice, and the overall lack of customer service, we decided to cut our trip short and leave a day early. The lake and beach are beautiful and have the potential to make this a great family destination. Unfortunately, poor communication, inconsistent service, restaurant issues, and mice in the cabins overshadowed what could have been a wonderful stay. Mice may be part of being in the woods, but regular preventative pest control inside the cabins would go a long way toward making guests feel more comfortable.

The trailhead is at the end of the only paved road to the wilderness boundary. Approximately 45 minutes from Alturas via Likely and Jess Valley, Mill Creek Falls Campground also serves as the trailhead. There is ample parking for day hikers and backpackers in addition to campsites at a reasonable fee. The falls overlook is approximately 1/4 mile uphill from the campground. Backtrack a few hundred feet to the south fork of the trail and continue on up the trail and visit Clear Lake in the South Warner Wilderness. The best time to photograph the falls is late morning to just after noon when the sun is overhead and casts fewer shadows. ( info from fd)

The hike to the Crags is a once in a lifetime experience that if you are able to do you should not miss. Beautiful great views of Shasta and Lassen from the top of the Dome at the Crags. I spent the past four nights here, and it was very quiet, dark, and peaceful…read more Quiet with the caveat that there was a TON of train noise. But if you like white noise, that might be a plus. This was the darkest campground I've ever camped at so far. The view of the stars was great. The cold was on another level. I wouldn't recommend tent camping unless you really know what you're doing. Theoretically, this campground has free showers, but they are closed for the season. I couldn't help but notice that the windows have been broken into and boarded back up. There was theoretically potable water, but it tasted a little funky. Most of the pumps were broken, which made it seem like maybe the rest are about to be determined to be broken soon. There was an electric outlet in the bathroom with a sign warning not to leave personal items. In site 25, which is reserved for PCT hikers, I found another sign warning that items are frequently stolen from the bathrooms, and to use the outlets hidden in the amphitheater instead. (There is also a Starbucks about fifteen minutes away in Shasta.) A trail behind site 25 leads to the PCT, but the trail was currently full of fallen trees and hazards. Another trail near Vista Point turned out to be a safer route to the PCT. A 2 mile trail leads from the campground to Vista Point, where you can either keep hiking, or take in the panoramic views of Mt. Shasta, Castle Crags, and the Gray Rocks. I chose site 38 to camp in, which was at the end of the line of sites that are currently open. The first two nights, I paid with the self serve envelope. The rest I purchased from the Ranger Station. Camping was only $25/night, half off with qualifying passes. So it only cost me $50 to stay here 4 nights. The spaces on the main road were huge, and very well spaced. There was a camp host on duty on site 20, and maintenance came through every day to clean the restrooms and empty the trash. I didn't see much wildlife except for a lot of birds. Wildflowers were just beginning to bloom on the trails. There isn't much to do near the campground, but I found this to be a great place to have some relative peace and quiet for a few days.
