Wow, has this place changed. I have been coming to IMS for many years and always had a rather good experience. No More! I used to buy metal here for my machine shop -- now sold and I'm retired. Now I do home projects. Came here few days ago, bought a small piece of sheet aluminum 24" wide from the remnants room for about $19 and asked them to cut it to 16". I was told they would charge me $25 for that cut. About six months ago, I did the same thing and the counter guy just took it and got it cut. He was away from the counter less than four minutes, no charge. So, I guess the customer service has gone away now at this place. Too bad...it used to be a nice place to pick up a piece of metal for a homeowner project. I wouldn't mind paying $5 or even $10 for this simple two minute job. But $25??? Something has gone wrong with this place. Looks like I'll have to find somewhere else to buy metal for my projects. They still have a fine selection, but the people have a new attitude...yeah, the counter guy was really grouchy and unpleasant to deal with. I think he enjoyed my disappointment in not being able pay so much to get my material cut and to move my project forward. This review is long, and just one star. They earned it. read more

I have met some of the best people there...and regrettably some of the worst. Perhaps most troubling is that the worst people tend to be in management and in estimating. Selection is great, prices are adequate, but I so hate people who practice poor business habits, are unable to communicate properly and unable to deliver an estimate in a timely manner. I gave them a 1 star because I would never go back there unless held a gunpoint. I HAVE been massively impressed with METAL SUPERMARKETS -- not quite the selection, but these people REALLY care about the customer. Also not the same cut charges as IMS (they do not charge for these). The price might be slightly higher, but between cut charges, responsiveness and speed of service -- easy choice. IMS has been a big player for a while, but complacency kills and my guess is it will be the cause of their eventual downfall. read more

I really wish things had turned out differently here because you'll find some great inventory here. Unfortunately, you'll also find a surly, hostile staff that seems like they train TSA agents as a side job. The very first words I heard from someone: "Just so you know, we close in 10 minutes." That's fair enough - I knew what I needed, located it in the store and then asked for some help in getting it (it appeared to be locked away somewhere). I asked the same person who gave me the 10-minute warning, and she wasn't doing anything at the time. Her response: "I'll help you just as soon as a I help some other people checking out." So I waited by the items I needed. Time passed. Someone gave the signal to lock the front door. The not-so-friendly cashier asked one of her co-workers if he'd helped me, and he acted like it was the first he'd heard of it (which is entirely possible). So he comes back toward me and I said hello. And this actually happens: Him: "You said you only needed 10 minutes, and you're still here." Me: "I've been waiting for someone to help me ... Him: "Uh-uh. Don't go blaming other people. Now let's find you what you need." He either has the most screwed-up sense of humor ever, or he's an absolute toad. I lean toward the latter. I would've walked out, but it was a pain in the butt for me to get there and I wanted to get my project started. So I bought a few items. All other purchases, though, will come directly from the manufacturer. I will skip Industrial Metal Supply and its awful employees. That sucks, because I prefer to support local businesses. But I can't see handing another dollar to these people. read more

I am not a welder, nor do I play one on tv, but this place is a great place to find metal in all sizes, shapes, colors, finishes, and uses. Brad went there and I tagged along to find a piece of metal for his car. I had a field trip while he went in search of what he needed. I have gone back to get poles for my backyard shade structure. Just a note, if you are searching for stripper poles they have them. hahaha. If you need metal for work or play they have it. Decorative metals, so them. Nice employees and great prices. read more

I love this place... I am a newbie home welder and you can get 10' stock in most all sizes and shapes for what Home Depot asks for a 36" piece. Their scrap room is full of goodies they charge cheap scrap by-the-pound prices for. They do cut material for a reasonable charge. Remember, often its cheaper to buy a whole piece and have it cut and take home the scrap than leaving the scrap with them. Depending on what you buy and how much, they charge you for the whole piece, like 1/16th galvanized sheet stock. They have loads of twisted stock, pre-shaped, and welded detail items as well as loads of interesting finials and other items to make your project look custom, all at very reasonable prices. Very helpful folks. I drive all the way from Cave Creek because the savings and selection make the drive worthwhile. Just remember to take old gloves to handle stock with and plenty of newspaper or towels to wipe the oil off the material as you load. read more

Not sure what happened to my last review but here's another. Great inventory selection. Horrible at customer service. I've left reviews before asking Neil to get his warehouse more efficient but it is only getting worse. I used to wait an hour to get inventory from the warehouse. Now I'm waiting 2. I wish Phoenix would get some competition for this place. When you make customers wait for hours to buy from you then you know something is wrong. Our money is what give you the lavish life you live. Please figure out a way to stop making your customers wait for hours on end. If not, one day you will regret it. Things never stay the same. read more

I work for a place that buys lots of metal and I'll tell you...if their drivers are anything like the rest of the staff...I wouldn't step foot in their place. Watched a driver right in front of me completely run a red light turning in front of oncoming cars. Not a care in the world it would seem while he stretches his right hand over his passenger seat. The best place in town to buy metals, they have a great selection of aluminum, steel copper and brass, along with wrought iron and deco piceces, sheets, tubes, welding stuff, brackets, rollers, pretty much anything you would need in a shop aside from tools. Only you have to get there before 5pm and they are closed on holidays, but this is America and that's how it should be. Also, don't forget a tape measure, some of the precut pieces don't say what size they are. They also have a small area in the back which is also open to the public where they sell remnants and other profiles that they don't have on the showroom floor, which can be a good deal since if you need something that is not precut, the cuts are $10 a pop. The staff is always super helpful and friendly too, great people. read more

The lines at the cash register are NEVER under 30 minutes long so make sure to clear your schedule, even more so if you have pieces cut In the back. The isles in the store are small and making turns with their inefficient blue carts when you have an item that's 10 feet long is practically impossible. the staff is also unable or unwilling to help you with questions. read more

It is hard for me to gush about metal. Truth is, I am not a handy guy. My Dad once asked me to hand him a hammer, and I gave him a screw-driver. So the thought of going into a giant warehouse full of metal was beyond intimidating. I knew in my mind what I needed, but I had no clue how to put my mental gibberish into words that would make sense to the folks who work there...but I waited in line (they are surprisingly busy), and I simply did my best to explain to the salesman what I needed...or at least what I thought I needed. The salesman was very helpful. Both of the things I needed required some simple fabrication. He said it would take about 30 minutes. He rang up my order and asked if I was a Vet. I am...and got an extra 10% discount (I later learned I could purchase what I needed online from some metal companies without a brick and mortar store...but IMS actually beat their price). As I waited for my metal parts, I was directed to a comfortable waiting room with a large TV, coffee, and free donuts. In less than 20 minutes, my parts were ready and exactly what I needed. read more

Perhaps my favorite store in the whole city. This place is awesome for hobbyists, DIYers, and professionals. Even if I only need one thing, I love walking around this store and letting my creative juices flow. I've bought small scraps of aluminum plate for making carburetor adapters, 18 gauge steel for auto body work, brass bar for model building, steel decorations for fences and gates, hinges, and perhaps a few cool things that I haven't found uses for yet. Many negatives here: 1) Prices are very high, unless you have a huge account and special pricing they are not competitive with other metal sellers in the area. 2) They are not locally owned this is a corporate store with headquarters in CA. If you want to shop locally go to American Metals much better prices and customer service. 3) Customer service is non existent. I'm guessing this is because everyone hates their jobs because upper management is a bunch of a-holes and this is reflected down to the customer. 4) The computer system they use to ring up sales is soooo slow, I can't believe they are still using a system where you have to type for two minutes to enter in one product. The most basic retail system would be better than this, 5) Always long lines (see above) 6) Takes forever to get a order filled in the warehouse There are 20 idiots with hardhats driving forklifts around but for some reason it take an hour to get one piece of metal cut. read more

Nice place, but the worst service. Been there twice. Grumpy staffers first time. Second time, had to do a exchange and got stone-walled. The time it took to argue with me about doing a $40 exchange on a weekend could have been spent helping me spend another $500. Bad policies only come from one place, bad managers. read more

I had an issue when I went to buy the bronze I needed for a foundry class. Because I had to travel from Flagstaff to Phoenix, I called to make sure they had what I needed, and told them I would be in in about 2 and a half hours to pick up a 15 lb ingot. When I got there, I was dismayed to learn that they had sold every last bit of bronze they had! I was upset, but after speaking with a manager, they completely fixed my problem. They shipped me an ingot from their Tucson store at no additional cost, and it got to me very quickly. Everyone was pleasant and eager to help me. I am completely satisfied, and I highly recommend this business. read more
