I wanted to give a stellar review, I really did. We came for the Improv for my kiddo's bday, the show was great, I loved how inclusive they were and they seemed like a solid little troupe. The venue is small and cozy, well lit, cute stage, clean bathrooms, all the basics covered. We planned on dinner because it seemed like the thing to do. When we hammered out what we wanted our order to be, we handed it to the guy handling it and he went about his business and we enjoyed the show. Except when we were interrupted. Three. Separate. Times. Because they were out of things on the menu they couldn't work out in one go apparently, both food and drink, and we'd have to quietly and as unobtrusively as possible figure out alternatives. Then it took stunning Ages to get the food out. Which, to be fair, was tasty for vegan eats. The totchos were drowning in So Many goopy layers, it was more like eating a wet salad on top of lumpy mash, but still, pretty tasty. We also had drinks and entrees. However, about a half hour after we ate, we started getting sick. I held on as long as I could, mostly until I could get home, when the throwing up started. It didn't end for some time. I had eaten nothing else that day, and neither had my cohort who ate the same as I did. Once the food was out of my gut, I was completely fine. If we ever go back it will be entirely for the entertainment because having a menu doesn't actually mean you have your shit together in the kitchen, and I can't risk what was very likely mild food poisoning. I can eat some gnarly food, I'm kind of a garbage disposal that way, so there's no other explanation. I wish them the best, they've got a great venue. read more

Well, what can I say about this place that will not have this venue crowded when I return. Simply love this place! I have been looking for a karaoke place in Salem and happen to see an ad on IG. Checked this place out on a Wednesday night...this place definitely did not disappoint. From the KJ to the bartender, all positives and I had an awesome evening! The fries with the house salt, great tasting. The karaoke system can be tweaked if you asked nicely and made me sound good. And who can forget the stage with all the effects. I apologize for forgetting the KJ's name as it was that kind of a night. The song list seemed endless and I actually placed in to many songs as we closed the place. The crowd while a few, it's Wednesday and I am visiting, meaning vacation for me. All in all, a great place for karaoke, fries were good, the crowd, awesome and kept the atmosphere great. This was pretty good. If I hadn't eaten at cornbread cafe (Eugene) recently I might have liked it better. The waffle was the best thing we ordered. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with a side of greens. Sadly the greens were too salty to eat. The biscuits were hard and crumbly, not soft and while the gravy was good, there wasn't much of it and not nearly enough to soak into the hard biscuits. The tofu scramble was weird. It was minced tofu and. It crumbled, flavorless and extremely oily. I didn't know you could do tofu scramble wrong. The chickpea sausages were too burnt/fried to have much flavor. My husband also ordered the breakfast sandwich which he thought would have been better on an English muffin instead of 2 hard biscuits that broke apart the second he took a bite. I did love the hot sauce carrier they brought over! The sauces were all great. The do a good Bloody Mary as well. We would stop here again, probably. I did think the staff was awesome. read more

I was not sure what to expect when my son chose The Space for his birthday meal. I was above impressed. The food is absolutely AMAZING! We both had the smothered tators (only I did not have the tators, hollendaise or gravy on mine) I'm almost speechless at the deliciousness of this dish. The kale was cooked to perfection with a very great flavor to it. The tofu was full of flavor and the salsa was exceptional. My son had the gravy and hollandaise on his with the tators and he said his had a bit of a spicy kick to it and he really loved it! The vibe was kicked back and chill. We drove by this place while we were staying at a hotel in downtown Salem. We're from California and frequent the Improv in Ontario, Irvine, and Brea. It advertised a teacher comedy show happening that night, so we decided to check it out. The tickets were decently priced at $15 each. The description of the show was slightly misleading. It said it was for anyone who was a teacher, knew a teacher, or had ever been to school. We knew it was an amateur comedy show, as it explained that the comics were actual school employees. But the comic's material, however, was geared towards actual teachers/school employees. As my husband and I are not school employees, some of it was relatable, but if you're advertising the show being relatable to all, then I would expect more material that was for everyone, not just school employees. One comic was hilarious. I wish I had remembered her name, but she was the shy introvert with glasses. We were still talking about her set the next day! The service was decent. The food and drinks left something to be desired but were priced well. We spent $50 for four drinks, a grilled cheese with fries, and some nachos. The fries came out ice cold and grease-soaked, and the grilled cheese was paper thin. The nachos were soggy, and they were out of some of the ingredients. The place had a bit of a hole in the wall/dive bar feel, which we actually enjoyed. We tried to give it another shot the next night for their gay comedy show, but it was sold out. read more

Started to feel a bias after the bartender made my friends and I stand there for 30 minutes when the place was barely active. finally we got drinks headed to our seats. My girlfriend went to use the restroom and felt very unsafe after seeing gender neutral bathrooms. She found a single person gender neutral bathroom with a lock. Our group still wanted to enjoy our night and we're enjoying the first act. The announcer/comedian was getting involved with crowd. He asked the crowd something we responded. He laughed and used the comment. The same bartender came out to our table and told us not to comment. After that we really were just bummed out from trying to have a good night and feeling judged for being two 40 year old straight couples. We won't be returning. read more

I recently tried the Infinite Brunch Burger and OMG....it was DELICIOUS, and those fries. There aren't many restaurants that offer a full on vegan menu in Salem. I think IR might be the only one??? As I first looked at the menu, I was thinking...well, I can't have mayo, then I realized...ding.ding.ding.....I don't have to modify anything. EVERYTHING on the menu is Vegan...you don't have to hunt and peck for something vegan and you don't have to ask for a vegan "option" which I am so used to doing. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING: I live in Portland and have been following The Space on Instagram. In addition to their exceptional late night music scene, their weekend brunches always look so inventive and amazing. I had to make the drive JUST to try it. I was absolutely blown away! I ordered the Smother Plate (because it has a little of everything and I HAD to try EVERYTHING). I was so excited when my plate came, filled to the brim with vegan delights! It's so rad to have a full brunch as a gluten-free vegan! Even my meaty compadres were satisfied. I'd definitely make the trip again JUST for this brunch. Their chefs are always developing new specials and I can't wait for my next meal here! Oh, and the COFFEE was PERFECTION. I went here for the live music, it was really fun! Fries were super tasty, but as someone with a lot of food allergies it was really difficult to eat here. There weren't any ingredients listed on the menu, and after confirming with the server (who was very nice) my food allergies, I ended up ordering a burger and had an allergic reaction still. Our favorite things were the donuts (actually the best I've had in a while) cauliflower wings with liquid sauce, classic burger with bean patty and tofu rancheros. The bean patty was surprisingly tasty, with a crispy exterior that gave a nice crunch to my burger, just the way I like it. The burrito could have used some veggies or perhaps more beans, though it was tasty. Takeout was in compostable containers. You know the way some of us imagine vegan restaurant food must have been in the mid 90's? Where the concept was so alien that it was treated like cuisine from a foreign country that you'd only heard of but nobody had been to? So instead of just making good food without animal products, what was usually offered up was some strange untested plate of 'substitutions' and bland tofu?That was my experience at brunch. I felt like I was living in a time warp. I don't know if the person reading this review is vegan or knows how to cook basic staples like, for instance, a veggie scramble or a mushroom gravy, but if you ARE vegan and you DO know how to cook, I guarantee you can make yourself a far better brunch than this establishment is able to provide. I can also guarantee that if you're vegan and you've lived or spent time in the Portland area and eaten at their restaurants, then you have a certain standard in mind when it comes to the food you would willingly pay money for. My Dad brought me down here for some dinner. It is fun to see Salem growing and adding new places to eat. We love in West Salem so it's even better to have something in our part of town. I was thinking it would be a fun spot, however I was totally wrong. First off the bartender was the only person there and had to serve the whole restaurant, mind you it's not that large but still kind of weird. It took about 20 minutes to get our beer and wine. Sadly the keg blew and we only got one beer and the other was a bottle. My Mom's wine was also spoiled.. Next comes the food. I had no clue it was a vegan restaurant my Dad was under the impression it was a mixture. I have nothing against people who are vegan, but I am not vegan so the food did not appeal to me.. the is no sign saying this upon arrival and we didn't want to be rude and leave so I ate the food. It took another half hour to get our food. The bartender said they were not usually busy on Thursdays, but their calendar stated it was a live music night..once the food came I it was pretty bland and tasted okay.. Hey if I was vegan I'm sure it would have been great. Over all I had to rate this place low based on the fact the service was awful. When you know you are going to host live music have at least one more server. But I'm not a regular and that might also have played into it. Good luck. read more

Disappointing food. We favor plant-based options and are always excited to go to vegan joints. One of us had overly-salty, mushy food: There were 6 or 7 core ingredients, all of which had more or less the consistency of refried beans. One of us had a unexciting burrito that quickly burst open and was also texturally lacking. 3 stars to us means, "not amazing but we'd come back". 2 stars to us means "not disgusting but not worth the detour" ... 2 stars. read more

I had this craving for some noshy vegan food; not just salads and hummus, but some really crunchy and hearty stuff. We'd been to The Space a few times for shows, but never just for dinner. I'm SO GLAD we came on a quiet night and not just when the place was packed. With a few spots to choose from, we grabbed seats overlooking the adorable courtyard and played mancala from the game library while the kitchen whipped up our food; I had a crunchy-pattied Guacamole Burger with LOTS! of avocado; we also got the Satay Bowl (big portions, and great fresh veg) and a pair of corndogs with yellow mustard, for the kid. The atmosphere and service were impeccable, the beer selection was good and the taps were clean, and the Bloody Mary was bold and spicy. I'm so glad to have a spot like this in Salem. read more

The space is the place! Everyone is super friendly it's a really neat quirky hole in the wall. I love the atmosphere the staff are all Super friendly. As far as bars with live music goes the space sets the standard. My only complaint and it's not a complaint I'm just not into some of the vegan of the vegan food.
