Well, these gents went above and beyond in getting me my new custom Channel Island Performer surfboard. They took care of everything and notified me via text that my board was ready for pick-up. It just doesn't get any better than that in terms of customer service. Best part; these guys are the type you want to sit over a pizza & beers while swap surfing stories with - they are good "salt of the earth" people. Now I am wanting to treat myself to a new fish also from Al Merrick. I will most certainly be back and I continue to recommend this amazing shop to all my friends. our family came in the spur of the moment. we got three wetsuits for $175 because they were on sale. also rented 2 surf boards which where $40 for 24 hrs. staff was friendly, they left us alone which prefer but where there when we asked questions etc. we looked around the store and got what we needed. My husband and I had a lesson with Dale last weekend. This was one of the best experiences of my life. I've always been crazy about anything to do with the water but this was my first time attempting to surf. Dale was very patient and honestly just seemed like a great person all around. I have a number of health issues not to mention being the biggest clutz in the world. Dale carried my surfboard not only down, bit back up the rocky and uneven terrain for me. That's right. He carried two surfboards. This may not seem like a big deal but they get heavy on that trek and they are certainly large, awkward and difficult to amneuver on dry land. I loved that he asked us questions about ourselves. We also learned that Dale was a full time middle school teacher, has two boys that surf and grew up in So Cal not far from where my husband and I met. Honestly I'm not sure we could have had a better instructor. He was very thorough and made sure we were comfortable with doing things before he set us out to try it on our own. He helped us with figuring out the timing of the when to stand, and just that natural intuition. My husband stood up his first try. That first wave I rode in on was an incredible feeling I could not even begin to explain. Because of my health issues, I've been unable to be in water all summer and riding in on those white caps, watching the sand and ocean from a whole new perspective literally made me tear up. I found a joy in surfing I didn't know was possible. I SO much appreciated Dal'e's persistence with me. I was worried about feeling like a total failure and expecting that righteous attitude like they know it all and these novice surfers are moronic. Not in the slightest. Everyone in the shop was super friendly and helpful. My wetsuit looked brand new so maybe they got some new gear since that poor review on here. I think service is al about attitude of customers too. Not all the time but frequently. My family is from Hawaii, capital of "bro-talk" and I've never met a soul there that was rude or condescending. It's the nature of that lifestyle, in my opinion, to be easygoing and kind. Everyone at Ossie's that we met were these kinds of people. Very highly recommended. Ossy's clearly only gets business because of their location across from Agate. Staff that have a cooler-than-thou attitude (with no actual ability as witnessed from the water) & wetsuit rentals that are filled with holes, leave the customers experience very intimidating & cold. They charge more for rentals than newport's original surf shop (ocean pulse) & apparently haven't invested in new gear since they moved out from ohio & bought the business from it's original owner. All about impressing their friends with "bro-talk" & making as much money as they can, this place should definitely not be allowed to call themselves a real "Surf Shop". read more

Ossie's rocks! My instructor was Jonny and he was very patient with me :) Poor guy froze his butt off while watching me flop around on a surf board for 3 hours. He even carried my big a$$ long board down to the beach for me! I am not sure what one of the other reviewers was talking about (no surfing/teaching ability) because he could definitely surf VERY well and grew up surfing in Hawaii; he also emphasized the importance of water safety throughout the whole lesson...no 'bro-talk'! I thought the private lesson price was reasonable and the wet suit rental is a must! I was there on a gorgeous sunny day and it was still quite cold in the water. I highly recommend this place if you are interested in surfboard rentals or a lesson (the gear is in good condition too). If you go on-line you can get a five dollar off coupon for your rental. No worries if you have never surfed before...most of the people in the ocean were novice surfers. read more

This is the best surf shop and the employees are actual surfers. I rented here as a newbie 3 awesome times and then bought all my gear I needed here. Board, suit and everything. Then I took my brother here and he rented. Next time we went he bought all his own gear. You get a discount if you rented that month. The guys are super helpful. Right across the beach from a decent surfing beginners spot in Newport made this really convenient. The staff made it even more so. Easy 24 hour rental of board, wetsuit and boots (yes, this is most definitely necessary on Oregon Coast 99% of the time). $40 bucks package deal and an $5 coupon made this reasonable outing for those without their own gear like me. We got two days of reckless tourist surfing in and a little leeway on the return time so we could catch waves on day 2. Heard the guy say they do lessons and kids size gear too. read more

In short, I find that Ossies Surf Shop rocks it out on the beginner surf lesson. Absolute perfection. Longer version: Everyone I met on staff was knowledgeable and personable. The lesson was initially conducted in a group setting covering safety procedures and basic methodology. After this, we were free to get in the water to practice and learn at our own pace. The two enthusiastic, kind, understanding and kick ass instructors came around to do individual coaching. Initially, I harbored concerns because I have a health condition that causes me to need considerable rest in between bouts of physical exertion. The Ossies team was completely supportive, encouraging me to work at my own pace. The equipment was great with staff insuring proper wetsuit, shoe, board fit, etc. It was an amazing day full of great people and fantastic waves. I will return. read more

I just finished up a three day surf school with Ollie, Kevin, and Shelby over July 4 and had a great time. All the instructors were helpful, kind, and knowledgeable and made sure that they made the rounds with all class members (about 8 on average--ages ranged from 9-40s) to make sure they were doing alright and to help them catch a few waves. They studied each student and were able to point out areas of improvement, constantly making helpful suggestions. They did not overwhelm us with too much information on day one, and properly tailored individual lesson time to help improve our individual skills and difficulty appropriately. I had basically no prior experience with surfing and stood up on my first attempt. I am curious to see if Yelp "filters" this review as it has 8 other 5 star reviews at the time of this posting. Ossies surf shop is a laid back, completely welcoming environment. My wife and I were shopping around for new surfboards. We went to every surf shop within an hour drive.... Twice.... The guys at Ossies went out of their way to answer all of our questions...On multiple visits. With no pressure on the sale, they helped way the pros and cons of each board based on our skill set and how we wanted to ride. Ill tell you right now they were right. I love my new board. Caught the best wave of my life last night. I can't speak to their rentals, although I did see a group of kids come back from a lesson. They looked stoked and very happy, not "cold and intimidated" as mentioned by another reviewer. Also, "bro talk" will always be a part of every surf shop, for the rest of time. Rented me a wet suit with a hole in it. Offered no reimbursement. Had me wash the wetsuit. Why am I giving them money to wash their wetsuit? Then they mischarged card and were unable put money back onto my card until the next day. This was a terrible rental experience. read more

Rented 3 wetsuits for my family. My youngest daughter struggled to get hers off and as a result, we were literally 5 MINUTES late returning them. All the employees and the owner were still there and the shop was open. Because we were 5 minutes late, I was charged a $25 late fee times 3, or $75. I asked the owner if he could make an exception or some kind of deal. Not only would he not, he was a total rude jerk about it! Hope you enjoyed your $75 because I'll never spend another cent in your shop. read more

I recieved the wetsuit I ordered, and although it arrived on time and was the suit I ordered, it had been packed tightly enough to put permanent creases in the major panels. The suit looked really bad. I've been surfing for 17 years have never had a store package their wetsuit so poorly. I've never had problems from any shop when I've ordered wetsuits in the past, those shops have generally either packed wetsuits loosely or rolled. Deep creases in performance neoprene lead to heat loss and wear. I gave them a chance to fix their mistake or remedy the inconvenience and they couldn't do so adequately. Definitely won't be giving them any more business, and if you're thinking of ordering online soft goods or wetsuits from them, either shop in store or elsewhere. read more

Customer service FAIL We start out just 3 guys who have never surfed in Oregon. And we end with one almost drowning/severely injured and the Ossie's shop owners only caring about how much they can charge us for a slightly damaged board. When we got there all we were given was a "tip" from the employee at the shop (that we had to ask for) to "get in by the rocks". It was later told to us after everything that he meant that to be for another easier beach and that he mentioned it, this was not explained clearly at all to 3 grown men. So in the water; terrified and almost drowned, told them about that later and all they had to say was "glad your ok, but the oceans a scary place, gotta be more careful". They have no insurance you can purchase for the equipment before and while they were checking out the board we overheard there conversation "it looks like we can just fix this" "no don't worry about that, just charge them for the board." And we did get charged for it, BASICALLY the price of a new board! (This was an already used board when we got it, not in pristine condition. When you rent the board they don't CHECK it either with you for any existing damage before you take it like most normal rental company's would do). My wife was with me as well and was very visibly upset about what had happen before this and the employees were rude and inconsiderate with her concerns about clear explanation before rental processes. Also side note, my friends who didn't have problems said they went at the end of the day to see if they could change out there boards for boogie boards because they PAID for 24 hour usage and the shop employee said "sorry we closing pretty's soon and I just wanna surf." Maybe I should know better but this was the worst customer service Ive experienced. Hope others have a better experience then I did. read more

Rented from Ossie's three times and each time the wetsuits have had either a minor or major tear in them. Solution: go to Pura Vida and rent from them in Philomath or they have a mobile rental truck that goes up and down the Newport area. The first time I rented from Ossie's, I had a rash on my lower abdomen, so make sure you wash the wetsuit before wearing it. They have the customers wash them out when they are returned, but I have seen several get checked in without being washed. They don't seem to enforce washing them out and they certainly have never/rarely washed the wetsuits themselves. My last time renting, the wetsuit had such a large tear that I just sat on the beach while my friends went surfing. When we went to go check in the gear, I requested that the wetsuit be taken off the bill and they refused. After a long winded conversation they removed the wetsuit but up-charged me for the surfboard and bootie rentals. Go to Pura Vida in Philomath for your surfboard rentals, they have better boards that aren't water logged, wetsuits that are clean and without holes, and better customer service. Ultimately, buy your own gear because rentals are way overpriced. read more

Been going to Ossies for the past three years now, learned to surf at Agate and Otter rock. They really helped a total joey like me and helped me evolve into less of a kook. Bought my first board from them, a nice 9'6" glass stick that I love. They always have a smile even when I need something simple stuff like a new basecoat or top coat for the quiver. Great selection of gear as well tho a bit pricey compared to national average but hey, buy local/stay local. Especially here in Oregon where everything as a whole is ludicrously priced. Rented a few setups from them as well to help teach some bros how to kinda not drown and with their basic boards, we got them up for a few seconds by the end of the sesh'. My buddy made me a wooden surfboard and I really wanted a fin to match. The guys at Ossie's found me a wooden fin that looks great and even put it on the board for me. When I asked about a leash, he didn't try to sell me on the more expensive one, but explained the benefits and I'm glad he did! read more

Rented two surfboards plus wetsuits, hoods, gloves, and boots summer 2013. We are basically beginners but have rented and surfed in other places such as Tofino, BC. Excellent attentive service, even when busy. Fair prices, much cheaper than Tofino. Thought all employees were helpful and had a good attitude. Had an issue with the leash on one surfboard and had to bring it back part way through the day. No problem at all to exchange for a different board. Would not hesitate to rent from Ossie's again. Best surfing beach we found was Otter Rock about 10 min. North. Much better than across the street. Park at the Devil's Punchbowl State Rec. day use park. Stairs to the beach. read more

The gear has seen better days here. My booties had holes in them and the zippers wouldn't wouldn't stay up (no Velcro ankle straps btw). My boyfriends wet suit was riddled with little "repaired" holes and barely-there velcro, and the leash on my board unlatched 4 times because the Velcro had been over used. I mentioned the leash when I returned the board so that the next person wouldn't lose the board in the water, and the kid just said "ok" and did nothing. I had to end my day early because the leash wouldn't stay on. They should have given us some kind of refund instead of just putting the board back. Pretty terrible customer service. We just returned all of the wetsuits and equipment we rented and were asked to clean everything by hand while the employees were literally standing by the side watching. We were obviously happy to do our part, but it took 20 minutes to process everything and the employees working clearly were not in a hurry to help. read more
