There is a main section and also a small walkway that connects to the building next door with more books. It's set up with comfortable sofas and chairs for people that want to hand out and read. They have a large children's selection of books and toys, my kids wanted some of the lego sets they had. In this section I ended up spending the most amount of time in the "Where's Waldo" section. There were so many new books that I didn't know existed and our old childhood books we passed to our kids are some of their favorites. All beads and craft supplies are crazy overpriced. I only came here because I needed to make a last minute gift. Thankfully I just needed the letter beads and a few findings. I would have been sorely disappointed if I needed polished stone beads, shells, wood, or clay beads. Also, the "price trays" to collect beads are stupid. Just a few minutes from the coast, it's the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you walk in. I went with a very sensible gardening mission: buy lavender plants to attract pollinators for my Meyer lemon and Bearss lime trees. Very practical. Very responsible. Nothing could possibly go wrong. Then I opened the door. The scent of fresh lavender was incredible. Not the artificial fragrance from candles or room sprays, but the real thing. The entire greenhouse smelled like a spa, and my quick errand immediately became a leisurely wander. The shop is beautiful, with healthy plants, gorgeous pottery, garden décor, lavender bath and body products, gifts, and more lavender varieties than I knew existed. I found myself comparing Provence, Phenomenal, Hidcote, French, Spanish, BeeZee Pink, and Burgundy like I was preparing for a horticulture exam. I eventually came home with two gorgeous plants, Provence and Phenomenal. Were they more expensive than the ones I could have picked up at Home Depot? Absolutely. Were they also fuller, healthier, and some of the most beautiful lavender plants I had seen? Also absolutely. The staff stayed quietly in the background, which worked perfectly for me because I didn't need help and could take my time looking around without feeling hovered over. I left with two beautiful lavender plants, a very happy new gardener's heart, and one clear expectation: The bees had better show up now.

I've taken several classes there as part of the Black Sabbath with the Gargoyles calligraphy…read moreseries. We are currently working on Black Letter Textura. Next is Uncial then Bastarde hands. Needless to say, the skill level is at least intermediate. Attendees should know the basic scribe terminology plus how to ink and hold a pen. Ward and Linnea, the couple who are the Gargoyles, help you with technique and refinement. The 3rd floor walk up studio is full of natural light and the price is very reasonable. As of March 2008, the price works out to $25 for a 3 hour session. The session includes a mixture of group instruction, one on one instruction and independent practice time. They have some supplies and books you can purchase on hand. If you let them know in advance, they may bring may bring additional, non-standard, items. For instance, I'd never used an ink stone and ink stick before but Linnea lent me the supplies to try it out. They have some beginning calligraphy classes as well as classes in other writing and print related disciplines. Later this year, they're having a class teaching people to letter, then carve their own wooden library bookplate. A hand press will be used, too.
