I only gave four stars this time because we actually had to call for the front desk girl quite loudly to come to the counter. She appeared to have been sleeping and wasn't very engaging. The last time we stayed here I believe the owner was at the front desk and he was quite wonderful . The girl that us out was a completely different vibe. We liked her This hotel is very nice. Stayed here for the first time back in March funeral and came back again because we had another funeral to attend coincidentally enough we got the exact same room we had in March, which is totally crazy because in March I booked direct with the hotel. This time around I booked through Booking.com because it was cheaper. Room was beautiful like the first time & while I love the bathroom, as another yelper said there's no fan in the bathroom to any noises when you go to the bathroom. We went to the tavern around 8 pm and had a couple of drinks, which was nice. I recommend the blushing bride and the Empress on main. read more

A nice place to stay in Middletown. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. On Christmas morning, we were pleasantly surprised with a stocking that included a bottle of water and some candy, which was a thoughtful touch. There was ample parking available, and the lobby restaurant was adorable. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The only minor issue was some chipping on the bed's headboard. My wife and I booked here when our preferred hotels in New Haven were sold out. Our room with two queen beds was reasonably clean and spacious. The hallways and the room itself had a strong smell of bleach. I appreciate having a clean and disinfected room but this was a LOT of bleach. Our room was also showing signs of age: mold on the caulk ring around the tub spout; one upholstered headboard had what I can only describe as claw marks; and there was a line on one wall running along the ceiling that probably wasn't mold, but looked too much like mold not to resolve. There were also two hairs on the shower enclosure by the shampoo dispenser etc. Noise was tolerable. Occasionally car or motorcycle noise was quite loud. The usual children running in the hallway at 9am. Didn't hear anything from adjacent rooms other than door slamming, but we did have white noise playing pretty loudly. There was a wedding so I have to guess that we were far away from the guests. You have your choice of paid valet parking or Self parking in the back. We chose self parking. There aren't a ton of spots so I don't know what happens if they are full. Your room key gives you access to a rear entrance from the parking lot. There's a sign--we found the door, but the door itself was not clearly marked. It also lets you into a stairwell that feels slightly sketch. If I were a single woman I might feel uncomfortable using it. Perhaps a silly point but I hate that they pipe in music in front of the inn. It feels so cheap to me and so unnecessary. Just a pet peeve. In conclusion, I would avoid coming back. This feels like a place where standards and maintenance are starting to slip. read more

Very dirty carpets throughout. No water in the room complimentary or for sale. The AC/heat fan sounded like an airplane every ten minutes. No fan in the bathroom making the mirrors useless after a shower. At Breakfast, we were the only ones there and each of our three meals came out at different times and one was incorrect. read more

Overall, we would stay here again - we were there for an event and were overall comfortable. Our important criteria is a good night's sleep so comfy bed with a quiet room, strong internet and good water pressure. The front desk had a nice tray of cookies. The parking is not obvious but was explained by the friendly front desk staff - there was plenty of spaces out back and there is a hotel entrance door nearby but you need a hotel key. We had 2 adjoining rooms without much of a view. Definitely would not want a room on the bottom floor near parking - anyone can look in so your shade is drawn the whole time. The hotel and plumbing may be a bit dated - the toilets have those tanks on the back and one room didn't work great. The hotel seems well located at the end of a strip of restaurants so getting a great lunch and dinner is very walkable. The police station is 1.5 blocks away - multiple times we had homeless folks ask us for money along this walk. The hotel's ice machine worked well. We didn't use the swimming pool or the gym. The mini frigs proved useful and were operating well without overfreezing but the only microwave is in the lobby. We would not eat or drink again at the hotel or Armory - while the breakfast was full and tasty it's really overpriced at $25 per person and don't get me started on the Armory $45 for 2 beers and a glass of wine which tasted like swill with no ambiance and a bartender who kept disappearing with less than 5 customers! We knew they were going to charge us a night's deposit fee so that wasn't a surprise. As others have indicated, they have some extra fees but ultimately it's about the same overall cost as a nearby hotel chain. We try to keep things in perspective in our reviews. read more

Stayed at this hotel for the Wesleyan graduation, May 23, 24 and 25. The facilities were clean and the staff was personable. The hotel is very conveniently located. This hotel goes well beyond demand pricing. In California, the prices they charged would be criminal, a violation of the price-gouging statutes. We booked standard one-king-bed room, breakfasts included, the rate for which is $234 per night (before taxes). Because of the Wesleyan University graduation the hotel raised its rates. Here is what we were charged: Friday, May 23, 2025 - $689.00, a charge of 194% more than published rates Saturday - May 24, 2025 - $889.00, charge of 280% more than the published rates Sunday - May 25, 2025 - $499.00 - a charge of 113% more than the published rate Amenity fee - $60.00 Here is what we received. I was visiting Wesleyan University, so I decided to stay at the Inn at Middletown, which is located on Main Street and only a 10 minute walk from the university. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the hotel was upon coming in. I expected it to be more like an Inn, but this is more like a hotel, which I liked. The room that I had was very nice. It was spacious with two comfortable beds and a large bathroom. The room, including the amenities, were new and up to date. I especially liked the abundance of TV channel offerings and the fast WiFi. I believe that they do offer breakfast options here, but it was not being served when I was there. However, there are many good breakfast options on Main Street. Altogether, the Inn at Middletown is a very nice hotel and I will be staying there again! read more

Here is the email I just sent to the manager about our disastrous stay here. We had a room block for our wedding weekend. On Saturday, we had booked a room from 5-5:30 to do our rehearsal, we went down to the tavern to have a quick drink beforehand, the bartender while at first she was nice, quickly became overwhelmed but then was very rude and unprofessional. She was on speaker phone making drinks for our party yelling at someone on the phone, literally screaming "HELLO?" crouching down behind the bar to talk on the phone. Our group went down to the rehearsal room, which was locked, when I checked in no one mentioned if I needed to have a special room key for this or what the deal was, luckily a worker was walking by and was able to let us in. After the rehearsal our party went back to the tavern for a few drinks to be met with the same angry bartender who did not know how to make any drinks, she was googling how to make common drinks. She kept taking guests' cards and walking away, we had to hound her to get some of the credit cards back. We all went down to Esca for our rehearsal dinner which ended at 9:30 and came back to the tavern for a glass of wine to end the night as it was still open, the same bartender moaned and groaned when we walked in and said "here's a bottle of wine TO GO" since she did not want us in there. Given the extremely expensive rates our guests paid as well as it being Labor day weekend and my literal wedding, I expect good service for myself and my party. This was nothing of the sort. After our wedding on Sunday, we had our after party booked in the tavern from 11-1 AM. I had NO issue with sharing this space with the other after party, however, there was a sign as guests checked in on Sunday that said our after party was on the second floor. No one had made me aware of this change but given both after parties were on the larger side potentially the hotel thought it might be a good idea to split things up or give us more space. This was NOT the case, I had to go up to the front desk and ask what was going on and they just said it was a "misprint" so I had several confused guests running upstairs and some that even left to go home because they were confused. The hotel did not try to redirect people appropriately or put a sign on the second floor of the mistake. Our party then went into the tavern which had been completely taken over by the other after-party, which again I would have NO problem with if one of the bartenders tried to make an effort to assist our party given I had to pay a designated bartender fee for another bartender to be there for 2 hours. Instead of trying to accommodate us, they told us to go "try and get a drink" which is not a good solution. I was also trying to ask the front desk manager how the bar was supposed to know that my party got to the $500 minimum so I wouldn't be charged the difference and he shrugged his shoulders and said he "thought" it was collective between my party and the other party, which again no one made me aware of. Given all this chaos, my party ended up sitting on the restaurant side of the tavern and begged the bartender to just bring us out some bottles of wine so that our guests didn't have to wait hours for drinks, especially since we only had 2 hours. At this point, some of the guests were so fed up they just went up to their rooms, left, or went to another bar, which was devastating to me given this was my WEDDING NIGHT. The other after party proceeded to bring in a GIANT speaker and drown everyone out with Taylor Swift music which is insane, what kind of hotel bar allows guests to bring in a giant speaker and play their own music? Towards the end of the night at 12:40, the front desk manager told us we had to leave, which again made no sense since the after party ended at 1 AM. N Nothing made any sense, was complete chaos, and honestly was a nightmare ending to what otherwise was an almost perfect day. read more

Recently attending a wedding in Middletown and I along with 30+ others stayed at the hotel. It was the most disorganized situation I have ever seen at a hotel. Wedding started at 4:00 and rooms were not ready at 3:00 as promised. The lobby was filled with two wedding party guests who could not check in. People were getting ready in the lobby and changing where ever they could. A complete meltdown at check in. We did not even get our room key till 10:00 pm after the wedding. The front desk was rude and was not empathetic at all. I would never recommend staying at this hotel. They are clearly short on staff as one of the cleaning people told us and unable to clean the rooms and handle the volume of rooms sold. Too many other places to stay in the area. I'm never going back. The manager should be ashamed of the this type of service. read more

I came here for a Zoom wedding, congrats again to my family member. I was disappointed with how everything was for such a beautiful place, as well as a very important day for my family. We came into stuff being stored in a corner, trays, used clothes, along with stands for the trays. On a 90° day outside there was no air conditioning, so it was very hot and uncomfortable. Plus the carpet was not clean, it needed a good vacuuming. This we did ourselves, while dressed for a wedding ceremony. This is not something we are expecting to do. I guess they didn't know that he was using the room for a wedding, even though they had it labeled on the title of the room located on the door. I expected more. I did like the response we received when we requested things. But it wasn't sufficient for the overall situation. No one wants to worry about those little things while setting up for their wedding. read more

Our family was recently here in a block of rooms for my niece's wedding. This is a lovely hotel. Very clean and updated rooms. Beautiful furniture, comfy beds and quiet. I had reserved a wedding block at the Inn at Middletown for a September 2020 wedding. Over 60 guests were already booked when the pandemic shut everything down; the wedding was rescheduled for September 2021 and luckily, the Inn at Middletown had availability and moved all of our reserved guest rooms to 2021...or so we thought. Three months before our wedding we received a call that the Inn at Middletown had agreed to rent the entire hotel to Wesleyan University for overflow student housing. They completely cancelled our contract, which we had for nearly two years, and left us scrambling to find new accommodations. They offered to make introductions to local hotels, which we could manage, and they barely apologized or explained their actions. They didn't offer any compensation or alternatives despite transportation and other details already being booked at that time. Ultimately, our guests were required to stay in two separate hotels thirty minutes away from our venue (the Inn was 10 minutes from our venue). We were required to rent an additional bus for the additional hotel and rearrange our entire wedding weekend (rehearsal dinner, farewell brunch, etc) because it was originally planned around the location of the Inn at Middletown. The staff and leadership at the Inn at Middletown showed no compassion for us (or the multiple other wedding blocks they cancelled last minute). They clearly were more interested in money than their prior contracts or local community. A financially well endowed college was more important than abruptly cancelling contracts and ruining many couples' wedding weekends. For a boutique hotel, I expected higher standards. I would warn others booking with them and also suggest conscious consumerism and investing in organizations that care for their patrons. read more

Came here for a weekend stay for a wedding. Upon checking in, service was a little bit slow. However, the room and the amenities were nice. Tim at the front was super helpful and very accommodating. I loved the soaps and the fact that they had blow dryers in the room. It's the little things : ) It was nice that you could walk outside and be right by plenty of restaurant options. The only major complaint I had were the extremely slow elevators, they were bad....like took minutes to go in between each floor. We only had a brunch here, I would say it was ok for hotel/inn food. Recently we attended a wedding reception at the Inn at Middletown. The venue was fine and the hotel accommodations were very nice but a little pricey. The only thing that we did not like was the meal. We ordered prime rib and it was terrible. The cut was small, over cooked and had no taste. Definitely not worth what the cost that was spent. Unfortunately, It wasn't just our meal but many others felt the same way. I wish I could say it was just the prime rib, but it was also the other dishes i.e. pork chop and salmon. I had to have a medical procedure in Middletown and I decided to spend the night before in town. I'm so glad I stayed here! It was absolutely silent at night-- I assume there were other guests somewhere, but I did not hear a peep from any neighbors. The bed was incredibly soft and the room was spacious. I came across this hotel because of a wedding. My flight got in super late and I was tired. I drove to this Inn and couldn't find the door. Eventually I found it! When we got I got I a saw a bunch of smiles. I went to my room and was looking forward to sleeping. When I looked at my bed there was no sheets. So my boyfriend, mom, and me were forced to sleep in the same bed all night long. The bed was comfy but tight. It's as if they are asking me to stay at the Hilton. The Inn is lovely and convenient to Wes. I just can't get over the lack of customer service and couldn't give a hoot attitude. This is our third time staying here. The first time was only for one night and the room view was not very nice. Knowing this the second trip I requested a nicer room during booking. At check in I reiterated the request for a nicer room. I was told that although full the room we were assigned was nice. I was pretty annoyed to find out it was above the air conditioning system. After calling down and complaining I was told that they could move me and to come back down to the desk. What about being full? So here we are our third and last time. Booking - asked for a better room. Check in- same thing. Asked if they were full - nope. Oh since you are empty can I have a room with a nice view. At $200 a night, the Inn at Middletown is priced a bit too high for what it is. That said, it is clean, with spacious rooms and comfy beds. The flatscreen TVs had a hundred channels, there was wired internet, and the bathrooms (though a bit old) had nice toiletries and fluffy towels. I'm not sure why anyone would necessary need to go to Middletown, but if you're here, you could do far worse than the The Inn. read more

Wesleyan University has a contract with Inn at Middletown to house COVID positive students. I was told they can have anywhere from 30 to 70 COVID positive students quarantining there at any time. I found this out after I had checked in. Police cars out front all day checking on the students. I never would have stayed there had I known. It is a well-known and openly-discussed fact that the Inn is being used for quarantining COVID positive students. I heard that the students refer to the Inn as "the COVID jail". read more

I spent a weekend here for my cousin's wedding. In addition to being a hotel, they also hosted my cousin's wedding reception. The rooms are very nice and clean. I only wish the mattress on the bed was more firm. The rooms have a number of amenities, soap, shampoo, cable TV, iron, blow dryer, coffee machine, and a refrigerator. Also, the hotel has free wifi. The staff here are SUPER NICE and helpful. We asked for more coffee cups and a microwave oven. They quickly brought us what we asked for, along with some extra coffee pods. Oh, regarding the coffee, there is also free coffee in the lobby. The coffee in the lobby is much better, and they have real milk in the lobby. As a wedding reception venue, the rooms were very nice. If you are planning a very large wedding (or other event), they may be a bit small. My cousin rented two rooms, one for eating and the other for dancing, and that worked perfectly for us. Before choosing this place, my cousin tried the food at the hotel restaurant on the ground floor. According to her, the food sealed the deal. For my dinner, I chose the filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection. Every one that ordered it raved about it. Oh, when you check in with Yelp, you get a free bottle of water. That was nice. All-in-all, we had a great time, and the Inn at Middletown went above and beyond to make my cousin's wedding an extra special event. If I ever find myself in Middletown again, I'll definitely stay here. read more

The Inn was very helpful throughout the hotel block process and when we arrived with a circus of cars, the guys were so incredibly helpful unloading and unpacking the cars. They definitely have experience with weddings! Our suites were a great size for getting ready (1 bride, 4 bridesmaids, 2 mothers, and a flower girl) and the lighting was great for the photographer. When we came back at the end of the night, the Inn even had a surprise for us in the fridge, which was a really nice touch! read more

We hosted my cousins bridal shower here and had a great time. The food was delicious, the staff helpful and the location convenient. I love the outside of the building and was surprised that I had driven by so many times without noticing. It was a little confusing to find the room for the shower though, and the second floor has a few different rooms for events so you see other events going on at the same time as yours. It felt a little weird to see the food of the other event while getting ours. I'm not sure how else they would do it though. read more

This is one of my favorite staycation spots in Connecticut. It has the wonderful charming quality of a New England inn, but includes all the amenities you would expect of a modern hotel including a small business center, free wi-fi, very efficient valet parking, an indoor swimming pool and a fitness center. I have never tried the spa but there is one on-site. There is a small pub style restaurant downstairs, but the Inn itself is in the heart of downtown Middletown so you are walking distance from everything Middletown has to offer including a decent array of cuisines. I think that the Inn at Middletown is a decent value for money given its location. You will spend about $199 a night for a queen room. The rooms are pristine and the inn itself is well maintained overall. The elevator is not as well maintained as the rest of the establishment for some reason. The carpet is stained and unvacuumed. That is the only part of the Inn that is inexplicably neglected. It is really odd. The front desk staff are efficient, but are only as friendly as they were trained to be. I was also a bit caught off guard by the no smoking agreement that you have to sign, not because I am a smoker but because Connecticut has banned indoor smoking for some years now so I can only assume that this is for the benefit of out of town guests. Overall, a great place to go for a little "me time" staycation. It is ideal for some time away if you are unable or unwilling to completely unplug from your life (i.e. you're a mom/parent). read more

This hotel is impossible to find. Do not trust your GPS. Follow the directions on the website. Even doing that, you might still have trouble finding the hotel, especially at night. The sign is small - smaller than the sign for the adjoining tavern - so much so that we probably drove past the hotel three times before actually finding it. We pulled up in front of the hotel because it said they had valet parking. Instead, a man came out and informed us that we could just park on the street because the meters wouldn't start running until 10. That was very nice of him to tell us, but we would have been just as happy (happier?) if he had parked the car for us. We heard him telling another patron the same information, and she seemed confused and none too happy. The two women we dealt with at the counter were both very pleasant and professional. Our room and bathroom were clean. It was strange, though, how much the hotel felt like a chain when I believe it's an independent hotel. I liked the Inn once we settled in, but it took a while to get to that point. read more

The doorman was charming an courteous, showing us the various fireplaces and banquet facilities all In full winter holiday splendor, before guiding us to the restaurant. It's was freezing cold and this dark cozy dining room had a roaring fire. We sat and had a cup of tea and warmed up. Stayed here as part of a business trip and generally speaking, was happy with the hotel. I certainly liked the location, being right in downtown Middletown, with access to plenty of shopping and dining. I was here over the summer, so the town was pretty dead as the local college was not in session. Parking is either going to be at the meters (free after 6pm) or about a block and half away behind the movie theater. For the most part, I was always able to find a parking spot near the hotel, except for one night when they closed the streets for a 5k race, and then I was forced to park at their complimentary parking lot behind the theater. You can save yourself a little walking by entering the hotel from the back of the property--something I didn't realize until it was too late to be of any use to me. The room was clean with easy access to outlets near the bed. The free Wi-Fi did not work well for me. Not only was I not able to connect to my companies VPN, I found streaming movies from Amazon or Netflix to be too jittery, so I simply gave up. Breakfast in the restaurant downstairs was excellent and a really good value, especially if your room rate includes the $10 breakfast coupon. For the price and location, I can't really complain too much and to work around the Wi-Fi issue, I wound up using my phone as a hotspot. read more

The inn was incredibly cozy, clean, and close to the campus, but was a little expensive for a one night stay ($200.00) in such a quiet town. And after my room service (apple pie and vanilla ice cream) was delivered, I called to alert the staff know that I hadn't received any utensils. I loved the location of this Inn. The staff was very friendly and the appearance was very clean. The view from my room was nice. Their was of course a wedding party the day I checked in and my room overlooked the courtyard. It was so loud it woke me up and kept me awake for at least an hour. I had to call the front desk because it was very late. The other guests seem to be the issue. No regard for other guests and making a lot of noise, slamming doors, talking loud, kids running around. The day I checked out I was waiting outside for my togo order and the man at the front desk began having an argument with another female employee which I heard every word of and thought was extremely unprofessional. For the amount of $$ it cost and my overall experience I don't think I would stay at this Inn again. read more

We had our wedding in Middletown and half of our guest stood at the hotel, including myself. Rooms are very clean, the beds are super comfortable and so were the pillows.. So happy that there were 6 pillows on the bed :). They kept the bar open late, since they know we were coming back to the hotel after the wedding. Overall a great place. The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Rooms were clean and spacious. However, we stayed in room 119 on Sunday and there were dumpsters being emptied at 3:15 & 4:15 in the morning in the parking lot right next to the room. Very loud and disturbing, especially to a sleeping toddler. I would hope they would prevent things like this from happening. Next time we will request a room on the 3rd floor on the other side of the hotel. Otherwise, excellent hotel. read more
