Past half-hearted renovations and garden enthusiasms have long since outlived their shelf lives and become yet more maintenance drags. And by far the smallest TV I have seen in an inn since before lodgings used to brag about "Color TV!!!" on their road signs. read more

My husband and I came here last week for dinner before a play. We've had very good here many times in past years. This time, however, the restaurant had only 3 tables occupied on a Saturday. We should have read the warning. This dinner was by far the worst we've ever had at the Copper Beech Inn. My husband's fish risotto came quite light on protein and just tasted ok. I ordered a NY strip steak prepared rare. Instead, I was served a tough, medium well steak. The waiter agreed it was overcooked. He took away just the steak, leaving me the plate with two sides while a fresh steak was cooked. The replacement steak came 15 minutes later. It was even more overcooked. Another waiter checked on us. I asked him what temperature he thought it was cooked to. He asked if I ordered a well done steak and needed longer on the grill. By now, I said to just skip it, not wanting to ruin yet another. Again the overcooked meat was taken, leaving me with the remaining two sides. My meal was taken off our check. We still left a good tip, but I doubt we'll go back until we hear about a new chef. read more

Had dinner there and was really disappointed. The menu my wife was handed was filthy and the entire decor is dated. My wife had the scallops and the whole dish was just totally sad. The scallops were very small, obviously not fresh and rubbery. They were served with boiled potatoes which were sprinkled with parsley and no other seasoning at all. The worst though was the "chef's choice of vegetable": FROZEN green beans. To charge $39 for this pitiful dinner is basically a crime. We told our waiter that we were disappointed for the above reasons and he mumbled that he would tell the chef. Obviously not the first such complaint he received. We were given a room that smelled musty. We thought it would be ok, just needed some air. But instead, by the morning, we were coughing, and many areas of the room we discovered had a smell that was so strong we had to remove our belongings immediately and ask for another room. The smell was like a bad basement, almost like urine. Our luggage even smelled from it. They offered another room which has a similar but lighter odor. Finally, they gave us a 2d floor. My friend slept on the floor because they had offered no rooms with two beds, even though we had requested two beds when we registered. They offered no compensation. We wanted to avoid a confrontation by asking after we left. I emailed and no reply. I called three times and was told that manager Chrystal would call me back right away. She never did. Carpet worn in places. The back deck needs a paint job. In clear view are the falling offer doors covering the garbage. The property needs some TLC. I was extremely disappointed with our choice of the Copper Beech. It's easiest to simply say that we have gotten more when paying far less. But I'll be more specific and save fellow Yelpers from making the same mistake. The northeast has seen an inordinate amount of rain, but the condition of the driveway leading up to our room in the Comstock was deplorable. Huge ruts and a 10x6ft puddle ( and no margin for error around the narrow drive) should have been the first " turn back" indicator. We were pleasantly relieved when we saw our room, however, and hoped that things would get better. It was spotlessly clean and ( though not top shelf as described on the website) reasonably furnished and large enough to promise a comfortable stay. Unfortunately, when my husband sat on the bench at the foot of the bed to remove his shoes a leg came off. Feeling somewhat responsible, he examined it only to find multiple repairs had been done ( unsuccessfully). Clearly not ok. We turned in after a busy day only to be awakened by revelries outside on a shared veranda. Since it was past 10:00 I asked if they might take the party to another part of the property so we could get some sleep. 40 minutes later they complied-they retired to a room below us. Though it is clear that a review cannot withhold a star because of the bad manners of fellow guests, the facility can certainly be held responsible for some degree of soundproofing. I'm writing this review at 1:00 and they are still at it. It sounds like a TV jerry springer brawl. So, no, I cannot recommend this place. We were expecting a quiet New England Inn and,instead, got a Super 8 at a truck stop PS. I sent a detailed email about the situation described above to the management after we got home. We stayed at the inn and had dinner on Valentine's Day. Although it was crazy busy for the holiday, the food was great, the service and atmosphere were also very good. Underwhelming. I've known CBI since 2006 and Pip's usd to be the go-to-spot when we lived in Essex. How that we have moved from Essex, we had a chance to stay at CBI - super underwhelming 1) no staff around - only saw one person the entire time were there. Looked like a ghost town. Couldn't even rate the service because there was nobody there 2) serves breakfast...... ya at 8:00am on a Saturday morning? We came down to breakfast at 7:35am. Ghost town - again no one there. Would have hoped they would have comp'd me the $19 bucks I spent at OlieOlys....... Save the $380 and stay somewhere else. read more

We just experienced a wonderful New Year's evening a Copper Beach Inn. We were welcomed by a wonderful hostess and shown our beautifully set table in front of a glowing fireplace. Our waiter was excellent as was our meal. We had the calamari appetizer which was the finest calamari I had had in a very long time. I had the baked stuffed shrimp which was very good. Later we sat in the bar where we again had an excellent wait staff and listened to great music. The inn was beautifully decorated for Christmas and there was a magical feeling to the whole experience. Before we left the hostess took several pictures of us and also gave us a brief history of the inn. I would recommend TCBI to anyone and plan to return soon. read more

First time ever staying here. We were at a local wedding near by. It is a very cute place. Driving to the building all the way in the back where we were staying but very unlevel. Lots of holes driving up. Breakfast they said comes with the stay. It's not really breakfast it's muffins and bagels with yogurt or cereal. Other local places to eat near by. Our room was very nice. The place could definitely use some updating for sure but it was cute. The service was great! If you want water bottles. I would bring your own. They do have 1 blue bottle of water that I'm pretty sure you have to pay for. Otherwise it was very nice with our walk out balcony. read more

Mothers Day disaster. Should have stuck with IHOP. Over priced, mediocre food, poor service. Had 12:15 reservations, arrived early, seated early (wasn't busy) after requesting our server twice, 31 minutes later, he arrived, Andy, with a condescending attitude towards my wife, stating, "l already apologized can we move on???" He didn't apologize to me and my daughter and at $40 a plate, (mediocre food at best, in all fairness, the $16 cup of seafood chowder was good) you better beg forgiveness, it's Mother's Day". Apparently he told my wife, who had to track him down, a half ass apology, blaming all the guests with reservations at or around noon for arriving and his colleagues for the miscommunication. Dude, this isn't IHOP or the Cheese Cake Factory in terms of volume, it's by reservation and they weren't entirely book (a red flag when I made the reservation the afternoon before Mother's Day). This waiter, I believe his name is Andy, has been in the business for a long time, (to long apparently) this wasn't some college students part time job. I insisted on being seated somewhere other than the greenhouse, hot as hell, overlooking the parking lot). We were moved and assigned a new waiter, she was great and if she had her name tag I would share it. Having decades of experience in the high end service business I shouldn't have had to fetch the manager to share my concerns, unfortunately that wasn't the case at the Copper Beech Inn. The manager greeted us, he expressed his concern without listening to my wife, made a scripted apology that included the token free dessert, (strawberry shortcake at $16 is outrageous). I got a sense from his approach ( see google reviews), this wasn't his first rodeo. As for the food, the Cheese Cake entree (not a dessert) was delightful. My wife's prime rib on the other hand was order medium, when it arrived everything on the dish, vegetables, mashed potatoes were floating in a pool of bloody water, wouldn't call it Au Jus sauce, more like when you cook meat that's not fully de thawed. We booked an overnight in room 217 which was in the carriage house. When we arrived we were shocked by how different it looked from the pictures online. The main house and carriage house had peeling paint. To the immediate left of the carriage house there was a mess as well as garbage on the side porch (see pictures). We were willing to let that go until we stepped inside. There was a horrible odor from dampness/mold. They had dehumidifiers running on each floor but it wasn't helping. When we entered the room the odor was still there. It was newly painted and had a new floor but the furniture wasn't the same as in the picture and looked tired. The windows on the door going to the porch was very dirty (see pic) and the porch was unkempt with peeling paint and furniture in disarray. We went to the front desk to see if there was another room available as we could see another house that looked fairly new (believe the 300's rooms are in there) but they were all booked. The hostess said she could give us a refund so we left to go to another location. Over a week went by and I still hadn't received my refund so I called the Inn. No apology was given she just said she is doing it now. Very disappointed... read more

Serendipity brought us to the Copper Beech Inn. It wasn't planned but it became a highlight of our three-week vacation. The hotel and its grounds were incredible, providing a serene environment for actual relaxation. We attempted to stay further nights but could not cancel our other previous hotel reservations. An unexpected memory we shall treasure. The inn encompasses three separate buildings, The main building was built over 200 years ago. It provides the main dining areas, bar and guest rooms upstairs. The woodwork within this building is astounding. It reminds me of the type you would see in old Victorian homes. The interior looks pristine due to their wonderful upkeep and maintenance. There is an enclosed veranda that overlooks an elaborate garden area. This garden has a fountain surrounded by colorful beds of flowers. Chairs provide the ability to partake in its tranquil splendor. The other two buildings are a renovated carriage house converted into hotel rooms and a newer building containing more rooms. We stayed in the newer building. It has a main entrance hall which can be used as a reception area. Our room was easily over 400 sq feet. It contained an ultra-modern walk-in shower and spacious jacuzzi tub. Our room faced out onto a large natural area. We could not believe the quietness of the surrounding environment. Total bliss. We purchased the breakfast meal plan. We were provided a menu of about six different choices to choose from. Found it difficult to select due to the offerings. Their coffee and orange juice were great. The meals were also delightful. We were not able to partake of dinner since they do not serve dinner on Monday and Tuesday; the days we visited. But we conversed with other guests who had dinner and were pleased with both service and meal quality. It is important to mention that this inn is family owned. Christa was the family member we interacted with during our stay. She has a delightful personality and while treating all patrons with respect, as we observed, she demonstrates her appreciation for the guests visiting. She provides services in the traditional ways. Christa's temperament aligns with the inn's values exactly; excellent service provides returning customers. Her jobs are many. She interacted with us during check in / check out and breakfasts. Jose, a dining room employee, provided excellent service with all aspects of our meals. I have spent my professional life traveling both domestically and internationally. The quality of service provided to us was on par with what I would expect from the high-tier hotels. It was personal, professional, and appreciated. I highly recommend this "get away" for your next travel if you are in the area. read more

Before I start my review, I have to say, please ignore every review before May 2013. The old restaurant/inn shut down, and renovated and reopened under new management. I never had the pleasure of going with the old management, but the dining experience on 7/6/13 was top notch. I made a reservation for 6:00, as we had theatre tickets, so needed an earlier dinner. On arrival, the hostess was welcoming. When we said we had never been there before, she offered to show us all of the various dining rooms that we could choose from. The atrium was lovely but was a little warm with the sun pouring in...would ordinarily be quite lovely but since it was 95 degrees outside, we opted for a window seat in the slightly cooler main dining room. The restaurant was not too full at 6:00 (as would be expected) but filled up by the time we left around 7:45. We sat down and our water glasses were filled right away. Our server came over and took our drink order, we ordered a bottle of wine. She came back quickly and as she was pouring, answered some questions about the menu. It is very important to note that the menu varied slightly from what was online. The chef tries to use all fresh/local ingredients so I understand having to change things up here or there. For our appetizers, I opted for the "Copper" Beet Salad, and my husband ordered the French Onion Soup. While waiting for our appetizers, a server brought us some crusty bread with butter with a grilled rosemary sprig on top. The bread was warm and fresh and quite tasty! My salad was so good. Beets, greens, shaved fennel, and some sort of Gorgonzola creme. The French onion soup was tasty as well, with hints of rosemary in the broth, it tasted very fresh. For my main course, I had the pan seared day boat scallops with lobster risotto. It was presented beautifully and looked so fresh and summery. I couldn't wait to dig in and forgot to take a picture until after I had eaten a scallop (oops!!) The scallops were huge and cooked to perfection. My only complaint was that the risotto was a little al dente for my liking. It needed about 3 minutes of additional cooking time, which would have also reduced the excess liquid on the plate. But the flavor was so wonderful that I ate it anyway! There were several huge chucks of lobster in the risotto and it was well seasoned. My husband had the beef tenderloin, which came with potato au gratin and carrots. It was cooked slightly more than medium, but was still so juicy and flavorful that it was not an issue. Everything on his plate was tasty and all of the flavors complemented each other perfectly. We decided to share a dessert and could not decide between the apple crepe and the duo of chocolate mousse, so asked our server to pick the one she liked best. We were delighted to receive a wonderful warm apple crepe. The exterior of the crepe was crisp and flaky, sort of like it was made with phyllo, but inside was a perfect crepe texture. The apples were perfectly cooked, and the cinnamon ice cream and spiced carrot purée were perfect accompaniments. Our meal was wonderful, start to finish. The decor was up to date and the only odd thing was that they were playing rap/hip hop music throuout the restaurant. It seemed like an odd choice but it was not very loud so most people probably did not notice. I stopped paying attention as soon as we had our wine, so it was not too noticeable. The service was all that you would expect it to be. We had never been under the old management, but we will definitely be back again. Maybe next time we will give the inn a try for an overnight stay. I would urge everyone to give the new Copper Beech Inn restaurant a try, it is definitely worth it!! read more

Had delicious oysters and a nice charcuterie that was very tasty, besides the dry aged meats and cheeses, it also comes with a small plate of gherkins, olives mustards etc. For dinner I had the special wild boar on bone. We read about the Inn and saw many reviews--- but the geographic location and its history led to intrigue and visiting the Inn for an overnight. We are pleased we did. The property isnt pristine but it is representative of a New England Inn. It has been an inn for many a year and it may need some paint and the driveway is gravel and not flat-- but that made me hesitate but want to explore. The staff/ employees were kind and very nice to us. The efforts they made any shortcomings unimportant-- the dinner menu was accurate outside the hotel but they had a small list of specials-- not accurate.... but this was the blemish we found. We did love the rooms . Stayed in the Comstock Building and I suspect the experience one has with the rooms depends on location. The rooms were super deluxe, fantastically clean, and the bathroom had a whirlpool tub. The size of the rooms were generous and I loved the porch off the back. Parking was just outside and waking up to the geography and quiet was a wonderful treat. We did try the restaurant. All four of us loved dinner. Complimented the clam chowder during dinner and then the next day. Flavor was wonderful and will be remembered. Dessert was amazing with everyone saying their choice was best. Service was attentive and helpful. Breakfast was more of the same and the food was memorable and the service efficient and kind. Will we return? Yes we will and next time it needs to be longer than an overnight adventure. read more

There are a few restaurants in New London County where you can pay a little more but get a very much better experience and Copper Beech is one. The restaurant is very comfortable and I imagine the rooms would be very nice too. The menu has 6 or 8 entré's but still enough choices to have trouble deciding. I had salmon fillet with curry sauce over rice. Frankly I was skeptical of the flavor combination but got it because I don't normally get enough fish. Now I learned that stronger tastes can compliment one another. Happy surprise. The ladies both had pan seared scallops which looked fantastic. The forks were out, looking for a taste of my dish but I said nay nay. The worst thing at the end of a meal is thinking "Just one more bite". Deserts and coffee also very nice. They make a mean Manhattan too. There are quaint attractions and shops nearby so a short excursion could enhance your experience. read more

My Wife and I choose the Copper Beach in for our small COVID wedding reception in November 2020. I knew the minute I spoke to Claudia that we were going to book our venue with her. Claudia was amazing and so attentive to details. With her help we had the most Intimate and Romantic venue . All our guest (20) where impressed by the Dinner selections and just how Delicious everything was. They also commented on the attentiveness of the staff which were awesome. Thanksgiving at Copper Beech sounded like a good idea. Not at all what I was envisioning. First of all, I'll concede that Thanksgiving promises to be a ZOO at any restaurant. I've waited to submit until the day after so my opinions have a chance to simmer down and become more objective. We were seated in the bar- dark, gloomy, no table clothes. Nowhere to hang our coats. Peoples' coats were hanging on the ground on the backs of chairs, onto the floor. Not very attractive and undoubtedly, a trip hazard. A nearby round table in the small adjoining hallway was crammed into a corner with 5 or 6 people and their coats were on the back of their seats. Pretty tacky for CBI. The menu offerings all sounded good, but I doubt anyone could eat all that was offered. So, they had you at the $93 per person price when you had to pay for it all and probably couldn't even begin to eat it all. My halibut was very good but was presented on an immense amount of mashed potato and gravy and appeared very unappetizing. Brought to mind something one may get at a diner or much lesser restaurant. CBI in the past has been touted for it's upscale ambience and menu offerings with a gourmet fare and smaller but well -crafted portions. I was extremely disappointed with the venue and the portion sizes. A dessert came as a dried-up meringue blob with 2 unrecognizable balls of something on top. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Won't go back again. CBI struck out on this effort. Maybe broke off more than it could chew (ha ha good restaurant joke) and couldn't pull of what their old reputation promised. read more

We went for breakfast this morning hoping for a nice meal. The service was unbelievably slow slow slow and after reminding our waitperson several times for cream for the coffee, it never came. I had to ask the couple at the next table if I could borrow theirs as my coffee was getting cold. My companion didn't get his hot tea until 10 minutes after we were done with breakfast. Meanwhile other tables who came in after we did had gotten their tea served before we did. The food was mediocre and a bit pricey for the size of the portions served. We eat out almost every meal and believe in supporting locally owned businesses. This however is one locally owned business to which we will not be returning. read more

Went to bar and ordered drinks, had to stand at single slot at bar, but 4 people nicely gave us there four chairs. Bartenders were very nice. After 25 minutes checked with hostess, I think her name was Gianna and she rudely told us there are people in front of us, she would let us know. After 50 minutes we were finally seated, the meal was good but the service was very slow. It would appear they don't book reservations smartly based on the kitchen and staff. We were excited for our stay and our dinner while also having pretty moderate expectations. From check-in to check-out, all interactions with the staff were sad, and poor quality experiences. It was clear that no one there cared much for the Inn, whatever it once represented historically, or the guests perception of it. At least that was what the mood conveyed from the moment we were welcomed and directed to our room to the moment I said "thank you" and walked out. The gravel driveway was not well kept. The deck and railings of our private porch were littered with cobwebs. Our room had a stained, wet carpet and smelled of mildew. The sound of an empty, auto-spraying air freshener near the bed is representative of the same attitude conveyed by the staff. The heavy sliding shower door was off its runner and could not be fully closed, resulting in water spraying onto the floor. Our dinner and breakfast experiences were no better as our meals were not as we ordered them and the staff continued to behave like we were an inconvenience. The effort made to write these two sentences is about all I feel the food itself was worth. The Copper Beech Inn, some historical, special experience, probably deserves better care when it comes to the rooms and the way guests are treated. While the young, carefree staff do the bare minimum to accommodate you, your need to help them do their jobs quickly convinces you that it would do the Inn justice to hire YOU to run the place. read more

Normally it's our go to....solid, every time. I don't normally post bad reviews but when the server asked we said it was just ok and we tried to share some feedback. He said he would come back at the end to talk to us. He never did. We ate at the bar and the service was really poor, the server continually walked by us without checking in. We had to waive a hand in the air to get a second drink. Bread was delayed, dinner was delayed. The mussels had phenomenal flavor but the portion was skimpy. The fois gras was top notch. The salmon salad was really weak. Tomatoes weren't ripe. Greens were poorly cut and the whole dish was just off balance. We will go again but tonight was a bummer. This is one of those rare restaurants where every time you go, it gets better and better! Tonight was the third time we have dined here, and the meal was exceptional! We are celebrating our fifteenth anniversary by spending the night at this beautiful 1800's Inn and we dined in the restaurant. We were seated in the garden sunroom overlooking the gardens- a bright, sunny room filled with windows and light. Every aspect of the meal was good. The bread was fresh, warm, with a chewy crust- just the way I like it. The Caesar salad was unique- three wedges of romaine topped with dressing, shaved Parmesan, and freshly made croutons. The romaine was served cold and was crisp, not wilted. Excellent! The crab cakes were meaty and delicious, served with a horseradish cream sauce. The skirt steak was amazing- the meat was flavorful, and tender- but with substance to it- the way skirt steak is supposed to be. The seared scallops were nicely cooked, and the lobster risotto was creamy and filled with chunks of lobster. Dessert, always a necessity despite feeling stuffed, was a chocolate creme cake- we asked for a scoop of chocolate gelato on the side and were graciously accommodated. Yum!
